2:40Welcome to the Tudor Dixon podcast.

2:42On this Good Friday, we have such a special guest here with us today on

2:47this Holy Weekend. And I say that because we get to travel through a tragedy,

2:53really a life tragedy, that one of the pastors at my church went through.

2:57And one of the great things I think about my church is that every so

3:02often, we have a video about one of the families at church and something that

3:05they've lived through, something that God has taken them through and brought them out stronger

3:11and kept them strong throughout, something really difficult.

3:14And I think that's a wonderful thing to experience in church because really that's what

3:20church is all about. It's not a place for the healthy people.

3:24It's not a place for people who are perfect on their own because we're not.

3:28It's a place for people to come together and realize that we need God above

3:34all other things, that God is there for us and will take us through the

3:39most difficult times. And I think this story, my guest today, his name is Brad

3:44Grossman. He's one of the campus pastors at my church.

3:48His story is so powerful in this Holy Week because for me, I always feel

3:53like as we go through this week, there's this heaviness.

3:56We understand the seriousness of our sin, of our pain, of all the hard things

4:02that we do. And then at the end, we have the celebration that we have

4:06a Savior, that Jesus rises and He rises again and He saves our lives and

4:12we have eternity because of Him and because of our belief in Him.

4:16But this week at church, our pastor was talking about Holy Week and he was

4:21talking about that day that Jesus was betrayed and that He says to the disciples

4:29when He returns, I have to leave you because I have to be able to

4:33send the Spirit to be with you.

4:35The Spirit can go with you all and you have to all go around and

4:39share my message and I can't be with all of you as you travel.

4:43I need to send the Spirit to travel with you.

4:46And boy, that is Brad Grossman's story who I have with me today.

4:51That is his story because he has done such great things with a really hard

4:57family situation that he dealt with.

4:59And it's a situation that many of us go through.

5:03In fact, people in my family have dealt with this as well.

5:06And that is addiction. And for Brad, it was his son who, like so many

5:12stories we hear, he went through all kinds of medical issues, had to have surgeries.

5:19And ultimately, after many surgeries, his son Grant ended up...

5:25... addicted to pain medication.

5:26And that's where I want to bring Brad in.

5:28Brad, thank you so much for sharing your story today.

5:31It means so much to so many of us.

5:33Well, thank you, Tudor. It's great to be here and to be able to share

5:37what God has shown me in that with others.

5:39Thank you. I would encourage people, we'll try to connect a link to your story

5:44because listening to you and Beth, your wife, tell the story on the video was

5:50so powerful. And for me, it was so powerful because you have to understand, Brad

5:54is someone that I see every week and you come out and you're so, you

5:58are just, you can see the joy.

6:00You are a joyful person.

6:01And that is clearly the Lord that is shining through.

6:06And I had no idea.

6:07I had no idea that this was your story.

6:10And then you share the story about Grant.

6:14So if you can tell us a little bit about what happened with your son.

6:18Sure. It was, um, it was 2008.

6:21My son was a senior in high school playing basketball and it was, uh, it

6:25was just, everything was going great.

6:26His senior year, he was finally getting to play on the team.

6:29And, uh, it was about six weeks after my father passed actually.

6:33And we, uh, started experiencing, Grant started experiencing some health issues where we took him

6:39to the hospital and that turned into weeks.

6:41And then all of a sudden, uh, we learned that he had ulcerative colitis, which

6:45is an auto autoimmune deficiency.

6:48So that led to weeks and months in the hospital with, um, surgery.

6:54Um, I remember that, um, December of 08, which then led to more surgeries.

6:59And, uh, I would say it was probably up to about seven surgeries in that,

7:04in that first, uh, first five or six years just to try to get it

7:09right. So, but one of the things we tried to focus on tutor was, uh,

7:13as a family, we committed to, um, Lord, please help us to honor you in

7:17this. Um, as we were going through each step of the way, we just said,

7:22Lord, help us to keep our eyes on you.

7:24And as a family, everyone agreed.

7:25We knew this isn't about us.

7:27This is about trying to communicate what it looks like to go through, uh, a

7:32trial with God at our side, but I've, I've got to be honest.

7:36It was easier at first because we thought this was going to have an end

7:40to it. We knew we felt like this health issue that they were going to

7:44get it right. There were so many medications.

7:46We had the best doctors in Chicago looking at our son.

7:50And then I would say it was probably in 2012 when we thought we had

7:54really turned a corner. We were so grateful.

7:57Uh, he was healthy. He was engaged to a, a wonderful Christian, uh, girl.

8:02They were going to do missions together.

8:04It was a, it was a great time in our lives.

8:07And he gotten, got married in 2013 and really couldn't have been any better.

8:11He was serving as a pastor, which I'd always told him, son, you could be

8:15an engineer, a doctor, but nothing's makes me more proud than you being a pastor

8:19and serving the Lord. So it was, it was beautiful.

8:22I, I think it was a time.

8:24My wife and I look back on that and it was, uh, just a glorious

8:27time celebrating his marriage, his new job, new career.

8:31And then after he had moved out and gotten married, uh, was not many months

8:36after that, that we started seeing patterns of behavior that, uh, really concerned me.

8:41And as a retired police officer, it concerned me all the more to where that

8:46was, uh, um, something I had to make some hard decisions with my son and,

8:52uh, confront him on things.

8:53And that's when, unfortunately, things really started unraveling.

8:57Um, I can't, it would take hours and hours to share all the various stories,

9:02but anyone that's been involved in addiction understands that, uh, painkiller addiction is so strong

9:08physiologically, mentally, there's that mental obsession.

9:13I knew of drugs and, and investigating drug dealers and so forth from a law

9:18enforcement standpoint, but I had no idea upfront.

9:22And I think anybody that truly understands, uh, the addictive lifestyle, you really don't truly

9:28understand it unless you know somebody or have experienced that firsthand.

9:32And that's what we were starting to experience some of the behavioral patterns.

9:36And, and that was, uh, probably the hardest thing having to make some tough decisions

9:40where Grant then ended up losing his position at the church, which was devastating because

9:45I was, uh, had to bring him forward on some of that, which was hard.

9:51It was almost, I felt like it was almost Abraham and Isaac story where Abraham

9:55was offering up his son.

9:56I knew it was the right thing to do to let the church know.

9:59He then, uh, lost his marriage in that time.

10:02And then that started, uh, several more years of rehab centers, trying to get him

10:07the best that we could, uh, all the way from Laguna Hills, California, which we

10:12were ignorant at the time, not knowing, well, what does rehab look like on this?

10:16So we just, we knew we wanted the best for our son.

10:19And I remember that very, after that very first program, it was just a month.

10:23And that was in, uh, 2014.

10:26And I remember we did the prodigal son story.

10:29We had his best man over to our house.

10:32Uh, I went and picked up Grant, uh, from the airport.

10:35We were going to celebrate that our son had turned the corner.

10:38It was a, it was a great day.

10:40We thought now this is, this is going to be it.

10:42He's passed the health issues.

10:44We sent him to rehab and that'll be it.

10:47And, uh, unfortunately that was just the start of, um, over 20 different rehabs.

10:52Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh,

10:52uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh,

10:52uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh Thank you.

10:52over the next several years.

10:55But during that time, I can tell you, Tudor...

10:58Why did you say you were kind of naive to the rehab?

11:01Yeah, I would say when you're a police officer, you know people go to rehab

11:06and you hear about AA and NA and so forth.

11:09But I had no idea the depth of what this addiction involved.

11:16I didn't understand the total physiological response, the mental obsession you have when they were

11:22literally in his surgeries would pump him with narcotics.

11:26And looking back on it, they, being the doctors, were striving to keep him comfortable.

11:31That's what they would say.

11:32And I remember there were times where I saw certain behaviors that really concerned me

11:36and I would mention something.

11:37They'd say, Mr. Grossman, you just have to trust us.

11:39Just trust us that we know how to take care of your son.

11:42We need to make him comfortable.

11:43But looking back, seeing him, you know, do the pump to get more and more

11:48opioids really makes me kind of sick to my stomach now thinking about it.

11:53But that was just the ignorance at the time, not truly understanding what that was

11:57doing to my son at the time.

11:59We just wanted him to get better.

12:01And thinking that after the surgeries and after the narcotics were off, he'd be okay.

12:06And that was far from the truth.

12:09It's interesting because when I had surgery in 2015, and when I left the hospital,

12:16they sent me home with massive amounts of narcotics.

12:20It was shocking. I mean, I couldn't use them up to this day, you know,

12:25and that was in 2015.

12:27And I was, you know, I didn't think anything of it, but I didn't use

12:33them. I had a terrible reaction where if I took one pill, I couldn't wake

12:38up. I just couldn't function at all.

12:40And I know that that has a different effect on different people.

12:43But then I had another surgery in 2019, and they sent me home with Advil.

12:48And I thought, that's so interesting.

12:49And I spoke to some people who had been in government at the time between

12:56that 2015 and 2019 surgery, and they said that they've changed this quite a bit,

13:02that hospitals aren't allowed to prescribe that kind of narcotic.

13:06Now, I don't know if that would be the case with the pump and during

13:09surgery, but it seems, I mean, you're not alone.

13:13This happened to a lot of people.

13:15Yeah, and we saw that quite a bit because what Grant learned really quickly is

13:22he could go to doctors and just say he had still had pain because he

13:25still had his disease that was causing some severe physical pain.

13:28So he had an easy out for the doctor to write a script for him

13:33to give him more pain meds.

13:34We learned later on when Grant would become sober and come out of a rehab.

13:39And by God's grace, we continue to have a very close relationship, even with this

13:46dark side that was going on.

13:48And he would share very honestly with me because I would ask him, I'd say,

13:52son, can you fill me on on what's going on so that I can not

13:55only help you, but help others?

13:58And yeah, he would be very frank about how easy it was to get pain

14:02meds from the doctors and so forth just by simply saying he had pain.

14:07So that was more than frustrating.

14:10And again, going back to the only way we could deal with that at the

14:13time was continuing to offer our son up in prayer because when we couldn't see

14:18him, when he was gone and homeless or in a rehab center, that's what God

14:25definitely showed us in those times because there were so many things we wanted to

14:29do. We had the best rehab programs.

14:31We had the best counseling.

14:32We had the best psychiatrist at times, just trying everything.

14:37And I'm convinced the Lord just wanted to show us that I'm the one that's

14:42in control. I'm the one that can only help and deliver your son overall.

14:47And that's what gave us the strength in each of these relapses or overdoses over

14:52those 10 years. Let's take a quick commercial break.

18:23What is that hope in God like?

18:25Through a tragedy like this, because I mean, I obviously experienced that when I had

18:31cancer and I was going through that, I remember this overwhelming feeling of no matter

18:37what happens, it's kind of a selfish feeling.

18:40For me, this is a win -win.

18:42I either go to be with the Lord or I stay here with my kids.

18:47But you have this tremendous guilt, like I'm sick and I'm letting them down.

18:51And I imagine probably from your son's perspective, there was a lot of guilt there

18:57as well. And he probably couldn't even tell you how much guilt there was.

19:02But for you going through this, there is this like, I just, I can't, you

19:09can put it into words better than I can.

19:10And the way that faith gets you through, the way that God carries you in

19:16these moments is so, it's shocking because you think, I can't do this.

19:22And yet he's there. Yeah, I would say it's, I usually explain it to people.

19:26It's like working out. I enjoy physical fitness.

19:29And so spiritual fitness, you need to exercise your faith muscles is the way, the

19:34best way I can explain it.

19:35And I believe if you don't, your muscles become atrophied.

19:40And so during those times and looking back on those 15 years of going through

19:45this, from the illness, through all the surgeries to Grant's death, it was so obvious,

19:49Tudor, that God just wanted to continue to give us little tests, not to be

19:53mean to us, but because of his love for my wife and I and my

19:56daughter going through this, that he wanted us to test our faith.

20:01And one of the first ones that pops into my mind was in 2016.

20:04It was after his seventh surgery.

20:06And I remember he was at home with us and I had gone to a

20:12fundraiser for a prison ministry.

20:14Beth was home with him.

20:15All of a sudden I was in the middle of that.

20:18And my wife calls me and says, Brad, you got to come home right away.

20:22I said, what's going on?

20:23She goes, Grant's gone. He had just gotten out of surgery, his seventh one, maybe

20:28two days prior to that.

20:30But in his bed and that that draw for the painkillers was so great because

20:35we were always encouraging him to not use them just because we could see things.

20:40And anyway, he ended up walking several miles to an ER just to get the

20:46pain meds. I felt like I knew where he was going.

20:49So I went there and got there just in time to pull back the curtain

20:53in the ER to see the doctor about ready to give him a shot of

20:57his pain meds, Dilaudid at the time.

21:02He wasn't very happy about that.

21:05But I went to take him home, walking out to the car, and he ended

21:09up keep walking. It was so strong in him that he just kept walking.

21:13I said, son, please get in the car.

21:15Please, son, get in the car.

21:17And he starts walking down the road.

21:19And I felt like it was at that one's one of the most critical times

21:22that the Lord was just saying, Brad, this is time.

21:24You got to let your son go.

21:26I will take care of him.

21:27I will watch over him.

21:28And I'm sitting there thinking, he's walking like an old man.

21:32He had lost so much weight.

21:34He just got done with surgery, had all the bandages and so forth.

21:38And I just felt like that's what I needed to do.

21:40So I went home, leaving my son at 11 p .m.

21:43on a road, not knowing where he was going.

21:46I went home, and my wife was like, where's Grant?

21:49I said, sweetheart, he just kept on walking.

21:52He wouldn't come with me.

21:54And we just need to pray.

21:55So we got down on our knees next to our bed and just asked the

21:58Lord to please watch over our son, committing him to the Lord.

22:02And by God's grace, we were able to go to sleep.

22:05I remember church was the next morning.

22:07We were both serving. Obviously, it was on our mind the whole time as I'm

22:11sitting in service. But it was later that afternoon that we get a call from

22:15Grant. He's like, Dad, it's Grant.

22:17I said, son, where are you?

22:19He's like, I walked to such and such hospital, which was easily about seven miles

22:23away. And he goes, I can't do this anymore, Dad.

22:27Daddy, will you come and get me?

22:28And I remember driving over there to get him.

22:32And that was just one of several opportunities that I believe God, by his grace

22:38alone, not because I was strong, but gave me the grace to want to always

22:42focus in on letting my son see Jesus Christ through his earthly father, which is

22:47exactly what we want during Easter, right?

22:49We want people to be able to truly understand that mourning comes before rejoicing, but

22:55also that we want people to be able to see Jesus.

22:58And the way he sees us best is through love, loving one another.

23:02And there were some of the greatest times, as many as there were hard times.

23:09There were also those precious moments where I felt like the Lord gave me chances

23:13where my son would say, Dad, thank you for helping me to see God through

23:17you. Thank you for forgiving me like God does.

23:20Because it made me feel, it strengthened me so much to know that that was

23:25my main mission. I just wanted to honor the Lord.

23:27When I focused on the circumstances or myself and what was maybe happening to my

23:31son, how could, God, how could you take a young man who was serving you

23:36as a pastor, who was married to a godly woman, where things were going so

23:40well, how could you allow this?

23:42Which I think is such a common one.

23:44How can God allow suffering in situations like this with good people?

23:50And I feel like he really showed my wife and I both that, that it

23:53wasn't about us. It was about, this is a broken world.

23:58It's a broken world where there's going to be a lot of suffering.

24:01And when we can keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, like, just like Hebrews 12,

24:052 says so beautifully, and it says, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the

24:10author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the

24:14cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of

24:17God. So Jesus Christ, before he was crucified, was able to experience joy and strength

24:24and power from his heavenly father by keeping his eyes fixed on his heavenly father.

24:28So by God's grace, I had such a wonderful wife who Beth was strong and

24:34believed the same way. And, and together we would just encourage each other in that

24:39back and forth through multiple relapses, just, and it's such a, an up and down

24:45roller coaster. You said you've experienced that a little bit.

24:49Anybody that's dealt with addiction knows it's a, it's a, it's a cruel roller coaster.

24:54It is, it's actually very cruel because there were times I would say, God, I,

24:58I don't understand why this is going on, but I'm going to trust you because

25:02I believe in who you are.

25:04I believe in your word.

25:05And that gave me so much strength is reminding myself and then reminding my bride.

25:10And she would remind me who, who is God?

25:13He's sovereign overall. He's all powerful.

25:15He's infinite in love. The hardest obstacle or the hardest hurdle tutor was he's good

25:22all the time. God's good all the time.

25:25He's good. When my son was just graduated for another rehab program, he just got

25:31another job. He was working on restoring his marriage and then a relapse or an

25:38overdose. That's good. And yet it comes back to like King David did through all

25:42throughout the Psalms. God wants us to cry out to him, but he also wants

25:47us to come back to the truth.

25:49And the truth is that we must trust him in the end.

25:52And I would say Psalm 34, 17 and 18 comes back to me right now,

25:57which is some of my favorites.

25:58It says, uh, the righteous cry out and the Lord hears them and delivers them

26:03from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who

26:07are crushed in spirit. The righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers

26:12him from them all. I can remember a time kneeling next to my bed with

26:15my wife in my arms as she's weeping after another overdose.

26:19And we're, we're just crying that out and praying that to God and, and the

26:23peace of God that really does transcend all understanding was incredible in those moments.

26:28You can't make that up.

26:30It wasn't because I was strong.

26:31It was definitely because of God's strength in that moment.

26:35And look at how many lives have been saved because of your story.

26:40Look at Grant's experience and Grant's life has led you to minister to twenties, to

26:46minister to young people and bring them to the Lord and save their lives.

26:51And I, and I think that you have to look at these stories and say,

26:55how was God using this?

26:57And how was God using you?

26:58And really, when I heard your story the first time and my kids were sitting

27:02next to me, my, one of my daughters says to me, is there a time

27:06when you could get so mad at me that you would not love me anymore?

27:10And I always tell her, it's just like, God, that doesn't happen.

27:15It's not possible. It's not possible for me to stop loving you.

27:18And your story was that depiction so colorful to see how no matter what you

27:25were like, when he calls, I'll be there.

27:28But there was also that story that we hear in the Bible of, but I

27:34have to let him make his mistakes too.

27:37I can't save him. You had to let him walk away that day.

27:42And that to me was incredibly powerful because God allows us to make mistakes, but

27:48no matter what, God is always there.

27:50God, when we come back, he is always waiting.

27:54He's always looking for us.

27:55He's always searching for us.

27:56And that was your story.

27:58That was what hit me about your story.

28:00I'm like, your story is really all of our stories.

28:03It's how powerful the love of a father is.

28:06And the ultimate father is his love is so much greater than that.

28:10Amen. Yeah, and I remember one time picking up Grant from, it was one of

28:15the rehab centers that he had to leave.

28:18And so I was taking him to another one.

28:20And as we were driving there, I took his hand and just told him how

28:23much I love him. And I made it a point each time after each relapse,

28:28after, unfortunately, my wife and daughter and I, all three of us had an opportunity

28:33where he overdosed near us.

28:35And I can still remember after that, just telling him, son, I want you to

28:40know that no matter what you ever do, my love for you will never change.

28:44That's from Romans 8. God's love will, we will never be separated from God's love.

28:49So I just wanted my son to know that.

28:50And especially the time that he went missing, that was probably the scariest moment.

28:55He was gone for 18 days.

28:57He had left a rehab center.

28:59I had called just to check up and they said, yeah, we haven't seen him.

29:02I said, what do you mean you haven't seen him?

29:04It was in Chicago where there's, in this rehab center, God bless them, but it

29:08was right in the middle of where there was heroin, drug use rampant.

29:13He left without his phone, without his luggage.

29:16And I knew that wasn't good.

29:17And that was a moment where I ended up contacting the morgue.

29:22I contacted the hospitals. I went down there with a friend of mine just to

29:26look for him, went visiting different homeless shelters, had a picture of him showing, showing

29:31them to him and probably spent several hours because I'd gotten a message from somebody

29:36through Facebook. They thought they saw Grant.

29:38So that was what I did for several hours.

29:40I came back home and it was so clear that the Lord was saying, you

29:44need to just trust me in this again.

29:46So I got down on my knees and prayed and Beth and I prayed together

29:50and just said, God, we know you're the ultimate protector.

29:53We don't know where he's at.

29:55And the reason I know I went down there is because I didn't want to

30:00have somebody else find him.

30:02I didn't want him to die in some alley or some other place.

30:06It was just such a strong pull and Beth was supportive.

30:08But when I got home, I know the Lord was saying, you now need to

30:11trust me. You did your part, but let me watch over your son.

30:15And it wasn't more than 20 minutes that Beth comes downstairs and said, Brad, I

30:21just got a call from Grant from some hotel that he had walked from the

30:25city to a town that was only about seven miles from us.

30:29And so we immediately jumped in the car, drove there to see him all weathered.

30:34His hands were swollen because he had had to beat off some attackers when he

30:38was living in this homeless camp underneath a bridge.

30:42It was. And in that moment to just giving him a hug, I think back

30:47now, Tudor, your opinion of homelessness, your opinion of those dealing with addiction.

30:53God was preparing us for ministry opportunities, even though seeing our son in desolate places

31:00in such low positions gives me and has given me such a much more compassionate

31:09heart, not because of my own strength, because of my own self -selfishness and maybe

31:15self -righteousness at times. Being able to look at people through God's eyes, I believe,

31:21is one of the reasons why he took us through so many of those, because

31:24I didn't understand homelessness before.

31:26I didn't understand the life of addiction.

31:28I didn't know what it was like to experience an overdose or have to forgive

31:32someone time and time and time again to feel betrayed numerous times.

31:38Yet it was only through the power of God's love that I could forgive my

31:43son Grant, that I could continue to look at him with eyes of love because

31:47it wasn't, I wasn't, I didn't have the capacity to do that in my own

31:51strength. And my wife did the same thing.

31:54And we look back on that and we're thinking, how good of God to allow

31:57us to still have an intimate relationship with our son for all those years, even

32:02through all the incredibly hard and tragic times.

32:06Only God could do that.

35:07Your story is so powerful for families going through this because I think so many

35:11people feel shame about this.

35:13And your story is very clear that this is not a certain group, that there

35:18is no discrimination when it comes to addiction.

35:21It can attack anyone. It can come after anyone.

35:24And there is one way to power through that.

35:29And that is with God.

35:31Amen. Amen. Yeah. And I had gone into all the rehab centers when I would

35:36drop Grant off. And one, I remember, had about 180 men in this rehab center.

35:41It was down in Missouri.

35:42And I remember going in there, and you're exactly right.

35:44There were men older, younger, different races, different social backgrounds.

35:49So it touches everybody, which I think is healthy for us as believers to understand

35:54when we see a homeless person.

35:55I guarantee if you ride with me, if anybody was to ride with me in

35:59a car, and people have before, I can't drive by a homeless person because I

36:04see my son. And I see my son in those moments just a couple of

36:08weeks ago in Arizona. I saw a young man, and he reminded me of my

36:12son. Excuse me. You're good.

36:15And I turned around because I wanted this young man.

36:19He was holding up a sign.

36:20Like, I heard somebody say they saw my son.

36:24And so I just wanted to go over and tell him that God loves him

36:26and give him some money.

36:28And people say, why would you give him money?

36:30He's probably going to use it for drugs.

36:32Well, that's where you trust the Lord.

36:33God is sovereign. I don't know, but I just wanted this person more than anything

36:38to know in that moment that God loved that young man and allowed me to

36:42pray with him. And that's just something that God has done.

36:45And I couldn't be more grateful looking back on what the Lord has taught my

36:51wife and I through all this to be able to bring us to a place

36:54where we now have such incredible ministry opportunities on a daily basis, I can say.

37:01And each night when I get home from church and Beth and I get together

37:05and have dinner, one of our favorite times is debriefing, just talking about the day

37:10like we've done in almost 42 years of marriage.

37:13But then just going on a walk and just praying, debriefing, but then just praying

37:18and praying for others and praying for our 20s, as you mentioned, which they have

37:24just been an incredible gift from God.

37:27God, because I can tell you, there are so many times when we are missing

37:31our son, which is on a daily basis where God doesn't bring one of these

37:36young men or one of these young 20s into our lives to give me a

37:40hug or to just be part of our day and remind me just to fill

37:46that void. It's so clear that God is doing that just out of his grace

37:51and his love for my wife and I.

37:53It's such a blessing from the Lord.

37:57And he's never missing. He's never gone.

38:00He's never not beside you.

38:02That's the thing that I think is most beautiful.

38:04Even the story that you tell of Grant's funeral when you went to his memorial.

38:11memorialize him, to celebrate his life.

38:13And you didn't expect, I don't think you expected all of the 20s to carpool

38:19out there and for the pastors from Harvest to go out to be with you

38:24and just that love that God brings together.

38:27But you told a story about someone who had met him, a story you didn't

38:31know. And I want you to share that now.

38:34Yeah, well, I would love to just start with that, I just touched on that

38:36point with the 20s because we were at the wake and I definitely didn't have

38:42any idea that people would be coming from the church because we'd only been there

38:47for about a year. I'd only been on staff at the church for a few

38:50months. And at the wake, looking over and seeing about seven or eight of the

38:56pastors, seeing several of our small group members, adult small group members, and then to

39:01see about a dozen of our 20s at the memorial service was something I won't

39:07ever forget. That was one of the most powerful moments, to see God's love from

39:14the church family. That's exactly what God calls us to, especially around Easter.

39:18When he says, go therefore and make disciples of all nations, he's saying all of

39:21us to go out there.

39:22Love one another is his greatest commandment.

39:24And for them to do that, that definitely sent a message that Beth and I

39:30were in the right place because that was so powerful.

39:32But the story you're talking about is one I won't forget either.

39:36And it was after the memorial service.

39:38It was probably a day or so after that when I got a message from

39:42my daughter through Facebook saying, Daddy, this guy wanted to share a message with you

39:47and here's what it was.

39:48He said that he became an alcoholic.

39:52He was in his 20s.

39:53He was an alcoholic, been through rehab, and he was about ready to go to

39:57another rehab center. His parents had kicked him out of the house, had packed his

40:01stuff up, put it in a trash bag, give it to him, dropped him off

40:06at this rehab center. He said he went in there.

40:08He was going through withdrawals.

40:09He was scared. He was alone.

40:11His parents, he felt like had disowned him.

40:13He walks into the rehab center to get checked in and he looks up and

40:18the first guy he sees is a young man.

40:20He walked over to me and gave me a handshake and a smile and said,

40:25Hi, I'm Grant Grossman. Let me show you around.

40:28And he said for the next six weeks, he said he saw my son do

40:31that with each and every person that would come in there, which makes me think

40:35of another guy at the memorial service that came up to me.

40:39He was a man in his 50s.

40:41I said he was a custodian at the last rehab center that my son was

40:45at. And he said, I just want to tell you, I met your son there.

40:48Nobody ever talks to me there.

40:50I just do the cleaning.

40:52But each time your son would come up to me and talk with me and

40:56showed me that he really cared about me.

40:58And that just impacted me so much.

41:01But this young man going back to that, he said he he saw my son

41:04greet people there each week that he was there every day greeting people as they

41:09came in. And he said, Mr.

41:11Grossman, there's no doubt in my mind that your son now is in heaven.

41:15And he's the one that's at the pearly gates greeting people as they walk in

41:20to heaven saying, Hi, I'm Grant Grossman.

41:22Welcome to heaven. And oh, boy.

41:29That was a beautiful message to get.

41:32My wife and I and my daughter, Whitney, really embrace that, that memory, because we

41:39can really picture that. As a matter of fact, we've got chimes in our condo

41:42here that we go over and just like to hit him a little bit and

41:47say, hello, Grant. Hope you're having a great day, son.

41:51So that was powerful. I think that story to me is so powerful because even

41:56going through that, even when he was struggling so much, he was being Jesus.

42:04I mean, that's the beauty of a foundation in faith is that even though he

42:10was struggling with demons, there was so Jesus was so much stronger, so much stronger

42:17in his life that that still played out no matter where he was.

42:20And you must be so impressed with how God worked through him.

42:25Even in those in dark places, God was working through him.

42:29Amen, Tutor. And you just made me think of another.

42:32It was a I'll say it's another spiritual epiphany where the Lord taught me because

42:36I'm always wanting to learn.

42:38Lord, show me, show me what you want me to learn.

42:40This this life isn't about me.

42:41I want to learn more from you so that I can love others like you

42:44do. And it came to me at a point in time where I was my

42:50goal or my hopes for my son was to be a pastor.

42:53I mean, I thought that was awesome for my son to be a pastor in

42:56a church that I was now getting the experience.

42:58And it was so clear that God said, Brad, I needed to be there.

43:03I needed your son to be in all these rehab centers, all these 20 different

43:06rehab centers across the Midwest and in California to be able to invite others to

43:13accept Jesus Christ. And when I think about it, I heard so many stories when

43:18I would visit the rehab centers of my son leading other men to Christ.

43:21And it made me think what we think is our plans for our children or

43:28for our loved ones. God has a much better plan.

43:31What Satan meant for evil, God meant for good, and he used it for good.

43:36So in that moment, again, just...

43:38My advice to anybody that's going through this with a loved one is to keep

43:42going back to Romans 8, 28.

43:44It says, and we know that in all things, all things, 100 % word, all

43:48things, God works for the good of those who love him, who've been called according

43:52to his purpose. It's the good.

43:54It's God's good. May not feel good to us, but it's God's good.

43:59And carrying into what I get to do now, Tudor, I wouldn't trade that for

44:03anything. And I don't mean that to sound extra religious.

44:08I'm thinking of, it was Saturday when we buried our son.

44:11So it would have been, yeah, it was a Saturday.

44:14He died on a Tuesday.

44:16We buried him on a Saturday.

44:18And it was three days later that I was to be back at church.

44:21And Pastor Cal and the church staff was so great, said, you take as much

44:25time off as you need to.

44:27And I talked with Beth.

44:29We prayed about it. And I said, sweetheart, she goes, honey, I know what you're

44:31thinking. You go what you feel like you need to do.

44:36I just felt like I needed to be at the church because my responsibilities were

44:40calling and meeting with people to pray with.

44:42And so that next Tuesday, I went back.

44:45And that week, I'll never forget because I had three different families, two on the

44:49phone and one that came and met me in my office that week that were

44:53all dealing with sons that were addicted to drugs.

44:56And it was at one point when I got off the phone with one family,

45:00praying with them and just sharing what God had taught me, not that I was

45:04anything better. It was always pointing them back to the hope that you can have

45:08in God because his strength, his power, he gives you strength in your weakness.

45:13He will give you hope when you're hopeless.

45:16He will comfort you when you're troubled.

45:18But I was sitting there and after I got off the phone praying with them,

45:21the Lord brought back to mind 2 Corinthians 1, 3 and 4 and says, praise

45:25be to the God and Father of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the Father

45:30of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles

45:34so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have

45:39received from God. And I just broke down crying.

45:42I was in my office all by myself and I was crying because God allowed

45:45me to be able to experience his word in such a real way that all

45:50those moments that God was comforting me through all those years with my son, he

45:54was now allowing me to help comfort other people who are going through similar circumstances.

46:00I'm never going to say they're the same, but what a beautiful picture of God's

46:04word coming to life. And I get to experience that on a daily basis.

46:09That's why I appreciate you saying you see that joy.

46:14It's definitely not human joy.

46:16It's the joy of the Lord, which Cal and our church teaches.

46:20It's supernatural delight. I don't have to make it up.

46:23God has given me his joy, his strength that you can't manufacture yourself.

46:29I don't have the capacity to love like he does.

46:32But the more I see Jesus for who he is, the more I grow in

46:36my love for him, the more clearly I see others through his eyes, the more

46:40I see my wife like a husband should, the more I see homeless people through

46:46God's eyes, the more I see I've met with so many people that are addicted

46:50to drugs or addicted to other things.

46:53And it's so easy to sit across from them, whether I'm mentoring them at a

46:57restaurant, whether I've been in the jails at Ottawa County Jail and sit across from

47:02men and be able to tell them with sincerity, God loves you.

47:09God loves you. And so do I.

47:11I can say that with sincerity, that it's because of God first loving me that

47:15I can say I love these people and reminding them that God hasn't forgotten them.

47:20They are not alone. His love hasn't changed for them.

47:23And to see these men, whether they've been in a rehab center or in a

47:27jail or a prison where I've been, it's so beautiful to see what that statement

47:34says to people who feel hopeless.

47:37Because in a jail or in a hospital or in a rehab center, many of

47:42these men always felt hopeless.

47:44But to be able to come in there and share the one God of hope

47:48like Easter, right? There's only one person that is the living hope, and that's the

47:55Lord Jesus Christ. And what a privilege to be able to share that with other

47:59people and have some credibility because he has brought us through things.

48:04But I always remind them, this isn't me and my own strength.

48:07You can have that same strength.

48:09You can have that same hope by trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ and who

48:14he is, his character. He will never, ever fail you.

48:18It's so beautiful because as I listen to you, I hear you talk about, you

48:21know, my son was meant to be a pastor and he got to do that

48:24and he got to go out there and be that.

48:26But that wasn't what you were anticipating for yourself.

48:31And I just think it's beautiful to see God's handwriting in your story because not

48:35only was God saying, there's a pastor in your family, he was saying, there's actually

48:40two pastors. You're going to be ready for this too.

48:43I am preparing you for something wonderful.

48:46And I am so impressed with what you do every week.

48:49And I'm so impressed with both you and your wife, everything you've been through.

48:53But your dedication to God and your dedication to bringing the gospel to people is

49:00so incredible. Before we go, just is there an Easter message over and above?

49:06we've already talked about that you want people to be left with today?

49:09The Easter message that I would want to give would be directed to two different

49:14groups of people. First, it would be those that are struggling with addiction.

49:18I would want to say to them and remind them that Jesus loves them, that

49:22Jesus is alive, that no matter what they've done, no matter where they are, no

49:27matter what they're even doing right now, that Jesus's love for them will never change.

49:31So that's what I would want to tell that individual, and that he came to

49:36not only die for their sins and wash them away, but also he was raised

49:41from the dead so that with his power, you can overcome the sin and the

49:47struggles that you're facing right now.

49:49That's the message for those individuals.

49:52And then secondly, it would be for the family members or parents of an addicted

49:57loved one. I would say to them, you're not alone.

50:00Jesus sees you very clearly what you're dealing with, what you're struggling with, and that

50:06by trusting him, trusting in who he is, that he is sovereign, that he is

50:10all powerful, that he loves your child, your family member far more than you ever

50:14will. And that by trusting him, you will have that kind of peace.

50:19From Isaiah 26, 3 and 4, it's one of my favorites.

50:23And it says, you will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because

50:28they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself

50:32is the rock eternal. And then finally, pray.

50:36Trust in God. You know you can go to his throne of grace with confidence

50:41and find grace and help in those times of need.

50:45And so I would encourage you when you're feeling like you can't go on anymore,

50:49pray. When you're fearful, pray.

50:52When you're feeling anxious about where your child is or what they're doing or if

50:56they're okay, pray. And the peace of God really will surpass all understanding and guard

51:02your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus.

51:04So for each group of people, I would just encourage you, keep your eyes on

51:10Jesus. You can trust him.

51:12He's already covered your sin.

51:14He's already been risen from the grave.

51:17And for the purpose of restoring your relationship with him and caring for you during

51:22this time. That's what I would share with him.
