0:02Welcome to Wellness Unmasked. I'm Dr.
0:04Nicole Sapphire, and this is your weekly rundown.
0:06We're going to talk about something that is creating a lot of confusion right now,
0:09and frankly, it really shouldn't be this complicated, vaccines.
0:13I know, we've talked about it before, but it just keeps coming up over and
0:17over in the news cycle.
0:18A federal judge has now blocked RFK Jr.'s attempt to overhaul the childhood vaccine schedule
0:23that was put forth by the CDC, not because of the science, but because of
0:27how it was done. The court is saying the process didn't follow the rules.
0:30So for now, we're reverting back to the prior CDC recommendations, the one before President
0:36Trump came to the White House and before RFK Jr.
0:39was secretary of HHS. Here's the problem.
0:43The public doesn't necessarily follow the legal nuance.
0:46They follow headlines, and what people are hearing is something's changed, something got reversed, maybe
0:52something isn't safe. That kind of mixed messaging erodes trust, and we are seeing the
0:57consequences happen in real time.
0:58We are already dealing with declining vaccination rates in certain communities, and now we're seeing
1:03measles cases rise again. Yes, all the kids who are getting measles right now, that's
1:08not a direct reflection of RFK Jr.
1:11changing anything on the vaccine schedule in the last year.
1:14The reality is vaccination rates have been declining since 2019.
1:18Yes, before COVID. But I can tell you right now, they're certainly not getting any
1:22better. They're getting worse, and the messaging is mixed and confusing.
1:27This isn't just the U .S.
1:28issue. We're seeing a rise in measles in Mexico, Canada, throughout North America.
1:32And we're also hearing about reports in the U .K.
1:36that there are meningitis causing causes increases.
1:39Meningitis is another communicable disease, bacterial meningitis specifically, that we in the United States recommend
1:46that adolescents get the vaccine for as they congregate in college dorm rooms, because that's
1:52one of the most common places for it to spread.
1:55Well, the U .K. is reporting they're seeing a rise in cases of this specific
1:59bacteria meningitis, which is usually eradicated with vaccination, but gaps in vaccine coverage, they're now
2:06seeing rises in that. Can we be seeing rises in this in the United States
2:10as kids go to college in the fall?
2:13I really hope not. It's a devastating disease with devastating consequences.
2:17But we have to be very clear here.
2:19When vaccination rates go down, preventable diseases come back.
2:23That's not political. That's epidemiology.
2:25That's reality. And at the same time, Americans are also making something else clear.
2:30They want transparency. They want choice.
2:33And they want to make decisions alongside their doctors, not to be told what to
2:36do by shifting policies or unclear messaging.
2:39And those two things can actually coexist.
2:42We can support medical freedom and maintain strong evidence -based recommendations.
2:47But that only works if public health leaders communicate clearly, consistently, and honestly.
2:52Right now, we're not there.
2:53And patients are caught in the middle.
2:55The bottom line is this.
2:57Vaccine's one of the most effective tools we have to prevent serious illness.
3:00That's true. But if we continue to send mixed signals, we risk losing the public's
3:04trust entirely. And once that is gone, it's very hard to get back.
3:09Now, the reality is I did think the original CDC vaccine schedule was somewhat bloated.
3:15I thought we could scale back on certain things.
3:18Some of the things the RFK Jr.
3:21has done, you know, I wasn't staunchly opposed to, but the way that it has
3:25been communicated makes it seem that changes are being done because they found new evidence
3:30showing it's not safe or it's not effective.
3:32And that's just not true.
3:33So for me, it's been the messaging that has been the failure when it comes
3:36to some of these changes.
3:37I think we need to have open, honest discussions.
3:40And it can't just be RFK Jr.'s CDC is unilaterally making these changes and the
3:47American Academy of Pediatrics or the American Medical Association are staunchly opposed to them because
3:52that sends a bad message to the public.
3:54We have to be working with our counterparts.
3:56And that hasn't been happening right now, at least when it comes to the vaccines.
3:59They are working with them with the dietary stuff and other things.
4:03So unfortunately, I don't think that what's been going on in the last year with
4:07the vaccines under RFK Jr.'s CDC has been communicated effectively.
4:12I really hope that moving forward, we can do this in a better manner to
4:17try and get more people on board, less people confuse.
4:20And we really tackle some of the public health emergencies that we're seeing in real
4:26time. Measles cases is the most glaringly obvious example.
4:30Thanks so much for listening.
