9:07these. I understand that they have some type of—the American spirits, I'm not even, like,

9:12advocating for what you shouldn't smoke.

9:14But they're supposed—they say that's supposed to be the most natural if there's such a

9:17thing. It's just tobacco, I believe.

9:21No? What's in there besides tobacco?

9:22I don't know. I've been trying to—they got—I don't know how this lawsuit ended up,

9:26but they got sued for the advertising of saying it's additive -free and all that.

9:29Oh, did they? Yeah. What are the additives?

9:33I've not decided—I've definitely done the science on it.

9:35I've tried to look. I mean, there's a big—here's, like, the website about the lawsuit.

9:38What's the accusation? That—here you go.

9:44Lawsuit questions natural claims. Natural American spirits cigarettes are made by Santa Fe Natural Tobacco

9:49Company and parent company Reynolds America.

9:52R .J. Reynolds, they fuck with you.

9:53American Spirits has been sold in the U .S.

9:56since 1985, under the original name Original American Spirit, organic—oh, you got us, you fucks—unadulterated

10:06tobacco. Sue claims that such marketing language has endeared American Spirit cigarettes to a core

10:11group of smokers who believe that the natural tobacco in the cigarette makes them a

10:15healthier alternative. Despite cigarette sales declining 17 percent between 2009 and 2014, American Spirit sales

10:22have increased 86 percent over the same period.

10:25Huzzah. A regulatory filing on the Reynolds American website states American Spirit is the leading

10:31super premium cigarette brand that is a top -10 best -selling cigarette brand, priced higher

10:35than most other competitive brands, and is differentiated from key competitors through its use of

10:40all -natural, additive -free tobacco, including styles made with organic tobacco.

10:45But words like all -natural and additive -free on American Spirit's labeling, the suit says,

10:50belies the fact that Santa Fe Reynolds adds ammonia to their cigarettes to maximize the

10:57amount of nicotine a smoker receives, with the result that American Spirits contain significantly more

11:02free -based nicotine than other major cigarette brands.

11:05So you're actually getting high off of cigarettes?

11:08One hundred percent. I get high off of them because I don't smoke them all

11:10the time. So I only smoke—if I smoke a couple cigarettes a week, it's a

11:14lot. And Newport's probably like ten times worse than—menthol cigarettes are probably ten times worse

11:20for your body. I was talking to Cat about that.

11:23Cat, Wimps? Yeah, I was asking him, like, why do you like menthols?

11:27And he's like—he was speaking on behalf of the black community.

11:31He said, we like things that are more potent.

11:35I believe that that's a possible part of it, but I also believe that back

11:38in the day—and this supply, I don't know if I talk about this, it was

11:41certain brands that targeted certain communities just for the loyalty of it.

11:45Yeah. And I think Newport's was targeting—I don't know if it was a situation when

11:48Newport came out. They were spending more ad money with advertising and everything.

11:52Because I don't know if I shared this story with you, but Pepsi was a

11:56company that did that. They targeted the black community.

11:59So I think even though—I understand we said more potent, but I think it was

12:03something that was in our community, whether that was, like, cheaper prices or whatever.

12:07And I think it's generation and generation, like, you need to do this because black

12:10people did this because it was cheaper.

12:12I think that that might be the case for Newport.

12:14Probably both. What is the menthol effect?

12:17What is the difference in the way menthol cigarettes work?

12:20Y 'all, I sound like Cat Williams the next day.

12:23They ruined it. That's one of the reasons I had to downgrade to, like, some

12:27people think that I started smoking Marlboro Lights because I started dating white women, which

12:30is more appealing. Unless you date a white woman from the Midwest, then she'd probably

12:35smoke a new person, drinking Pepsis and Coca -Cola just like you.

12:38But I think that's part.

12:40But I got so many bad habits that I need to change.

13:57and numbs the airways, masks irritation, and can make cigarettes feel smoother and more addictive

14:03without making them any safer.

14:04So, menthol cigarettes appeal to black people because it's a cool cigarette.

14:10It's cool. That's what makes so much sense why the brand Cool Cigarette, because that

14:14makes sense. Right. That's why they're called it cool, I bet.

14:56value of a cool cigarette is higher in prison.

15:00Isn't it crazy that they give you cigarettes in prison?

15:03That's crazy. It's like the only drug you can get in prison.

15:06Yeah. And those. You can't get alcohol, right?

15:10Well, you can't get alcohol, but they make their own type of.

15:36But candy bars, you got to be particular with that because if you offer, this

15:40is what I hear. If you offer a person a certain amount of candy bars,

15:45then what I understand is that you're inviting them to have sexual intercourse with you.

16:16talk. But these are the conversations that I have, that I've heard people have.

16:20It's interesting how different brands market to different people.

16:24And I mean, how do they figure it out?

16:26Like what do they work?

16:27Like that's where it's evil, right?

16:30Like advertising itself, I don't have a problem with, but there is something weird about

16:37deceptive advertising that's legal, you know?

16:41Well, they do a history on what people like.

16:45I was watching or reading a story about the people that started Forever 21.

16:51I forget what the brand was.

16:52It was some Koreans from South Korea.

16:54Not to be confused with Kim Jong -un and those people, but they were tailors

16:59of something. They started a small boutique.

17:01And what they would do was they would have these clothing, pieces of clothing, and

17:06they would really pay particular attention to what colors people like, what was selling the

17:14most, whatever. And that's what they buy.

17:16And one of the things that made Forever 21 so popular because they had really

17:19inexpensive, the clothes weren't expensive, but they was turning them over so quick, you know?

17:25So people do case studies and see what people attracted to.

17:30I know with black people, you put lemon pepper on anything, it's going to go

17:37out the roof. You could do lemon pepper, chicken wings, lemon pepper, french fries, anything

17:42lemon pepper, they're going to go.

17:42So I don't know who started the whole lemon pepper craze, but you lemon pepper,

17:47anything, black people are going to buy it.

17:48That's interesting how white people are associated with very bland foods.

17:53You know, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, mayonnaise.

17:58And you know why you're connected with that blandness?

17:59Because the way you pronounced it.

18:02Macaroni and cheese? You'd never, ever say, if you tell somebody, if you say, and

18:08you would be able to be invited to the cookout, Joe, you know, people like

18:11you. But if you say, hey, guys, I'm coming to the cookout, right, and I'm

18:18bringing macaroni and cheese, you're going to get uninvited to the cookout.

18:22How should I say it?

18:23Mac and cheese. Mac and cheese.

18:25Yeah, you can't say macaroni and cheese.

18:27Nobody ever does that. Oh, okay.

18:29They would look at you as a spy.

18:31You would get invited and be uninvited.

18:32Well, I'm a different type of white person because I'm Italian and we're associated with

18:36spicy food. Very strong. flavors.

18:40It's a different, like Italian people don't like bland food.

18:44They like very spicy, very flavorful food.

19:01But I will say this, as much as, you know, the community would make fun

19:04of white people and their lack of seasoning.

21:49But what they did was they tried to associate saturated fat and foods with saturated

21:55fat with being responsible for heart disease.

21:57And they did that to try to get the blame off of sugar because sugar

22:02is fucking terrible for you.

22:04It's terrible in basically every way, especially added sugar.

22:07So why are all of these diseases that we speak of are more happening in

22:13the black community than in the white community?

22:16It's diet. It's diet. It's 100%.

22:24Like if you say, if you drink like a one liter Pepsi, the amount of

22:34If you drink several leaves a day, one of them, I believe is more sugar

22:38than you're ever supposed to have in a day.

22:40Pepsi is the one and that's why...

22:41Well, it could be Coca -Cola, it could be Pepsi, Mountain Dew, name you, pick

22:45your poison. I think it's 100 % Pepsi.

22:47Well, Pepsi's, I don't know, does Pepsi have more sugar than Coca -Cola?

22:51I don't know. You know, Coca -Cola is one of the only things that's still

22:56flavored with cocaine leaf. Sugar content, 115, 123 grams in a one liter bottle.

23:20Specifically, excess sugar, like in a liquid form, your body does not know what the

23:27Because nowhere in nature do you get sugar in a liquid form like that.

23:33Like people think orange juice is good for you.

23:35It's not. Like drinking orange juice, yeah, you're going to get some vitamin D, but

23:39you're also going to, vitamin C rather, but you're also going to get a gigantic

23:42dose of sugar that has no fiber in it.

23:45But is it a different type of sugar and fruits and vegetables than what you

23:48get off the counter? You get fructose rather than high fructose corn syrup.

23:53Uh, you know, look, sugar from fruit is the best sugar for you because it's

23:58attached to fiber and that's, that's a slow release sugar.

24:01Like if you eat an apple and apples aren't bad for you, it's a natural

24:04way that your body consumes sugar, but there's not.

24:07Apples were bad for Adam.

24:11It was a fruit. It was a fruit from the tree of knowledge, the tree.

24:43It all started. Genesis does not specifically specify rather what kind of fruit Adam ate,

26:20Well, the problem with the Bible is, first of all, that it was an oral

26:25tradition forever. So it was an oral tradition for a long time before it was

26:29ever written down. Then it was written down in a bunch of ancient languages.

26:32It was written down in ancient Hebrew.

26:34It was written down in Aramaic.

26:36And then when you translate ancient Hebrew to, first they translated it to Latin and

26:43then they translated it to Greek and all these other, maybe Greek first.

26:46I forget which one was first.

26:48But either way, the translations miss a lot of the language.

26:53It's very complicated. Ancient Hebrew is a very complicated language.

26:56And numbers double as letters in ancient Hebrew.

27:00So ancient Hebrew doesn't have numbers.

27:02All their words have a numerical value to them.

27:05What do you think makes people so connected to the Bible?

27:10Is it because of wanting to believe in something?

27:14Definitely. Definitely wanting to believe in something.

27:17And then specifically, if you look at the teachings of Jesus Christ, if you follow

27:22them, I think it'll lead to a better life.

27:25I think it makes you a better person.

27:26It makes you a better member of the community.

27:29It reinforces community. It's like a really good way to live your life.

27:34So I think people that live that way, that actually live that way, they're better

27:38examples of human beings. So that makes it reinforced.

27:41But it's also people – there's a lot of other religions that people believe in

27:45that don't have those aspects to them.

27:47People want to believe things.

27:49People want to believe in things even if you – like Scientology.

27:52People deeply believe in Scientology.

27:54And we know it was written by a science fiction author who was a bad

27:58science fiction author. L. Ron Hubbard wrote some terrible books.

28:02Like that guy would just bang books out.

28:04He never rewrote shit. Everything was a first draft.

28:07Just clank. He wrote more fiction than any human being that's ever lived.

28:11And he also wrote Scientology.

28:14And people believe in it.

28:15I do believe – I think people, like you say, people want to – if

28:19your life is fucked up, whatever, they want to be able to say, okay, this

28:22is my savior, if I believe in this, it's going to get me on the

28:25right track. 100%. And then with that, with these – like Drewski just did a

28:29skit that went viral, right?

28:31And it was like he was making fun of the mega churches and everything.

28:35But these churches, like they give these people something to believe in, make them feel

28:40better, and they charge people.

28:42Do you think that there should be a separation?

28:44If I inspire you, if my writings or my speeches inspire you to want to

28:49do something and change your life and be more financially secure, do you think these

28:55people entitled to like, okay, almost like agencies, if I get you to work or

28:58get you there, should you hit me off?

29:00Or the mega churches, is it so wrong for me just to pour all their

29:03money to them? Or are they giving these people something to believe in?

29:07If that's the case, do I supposed to get a piece of that?

29:09I think they're preying on people's need to believe in things, and I think they're

29:13very predatory. And I think that's why they're flying private jets and driving Rolls Royces

29:17and living in mega mansions on giant ranches.

29:20And they're doing it all off of donations of people that are barely getting by.

29:24That's a lot of it.

29:25I think it's a scam that's legal.

29:27I think if we were a just and righteous society, it wouldn't be legal.

29:56God will pay you back tenfold.

30:01call in and say, I was $1 ,000 in debt and this and that, but

30:05I borrowed $100, and I donated it to you, and now all of a sudden

30:08I drive a Rolls Royce, and it's all horseshit.

30:10But those are all desperate people.

30:13Desperate people. Those are the same people that I'm going to spend $30 on the

30:17lottery every day for, like, fucking 50 years and don't know how much that will

30:20spend. That's another scam. That's another scam.

34:24But if you consider the fact that she was probably 20, 21, her life expectancy

34:28probably, she was white, so she probably lived to 132.

35:55So they make $50 on top of that.

35:57And then on top of that, you pay taxes on that $30.

1:13:47that felt good. Then at the end, we stopped.

1:13:49He's flipping burgers and shit.

1:13:51We got to know each other.

1:13:53We came in touch with each other.

1:13:55And he was doing a comedy festival in Nashville, right?

1:13:58He appreciated me as a comedian.

1:14:00He said, yo, D, I'm doing this.

1:14:01I was like one of the first people he called, right?

1:14:03He said, you want to do it?

1:14:04I was like, why not?

1:14:06Then I thought about it.

1:14:06I was like, again, what you're saying.

1:14:08I was like, what people are going to think?

1:14:10Seven comedians on the show.

1:14:11I'm the only black guy.

1:14:12I knew what I was walking into.

1:14:14I knew it was going to be all maggots.

1:14:18It wasn't going to be a gay person.

1:14:20It wasn't going to be a midget.

1:14:22It wasn't going to be a lesbian.

1:14:24It wasn't going to be anything but bona fide.

1:14:59He said, man, I think we just brought this country back together, right?

1:15:04And I said, well, don't separate it, motherfucker.

1:15:07He said, okay, two weeks later, he'd do some other stupid shit.

1:15:11When Trump got elected, I know people went to his page to see what his

1:15:19response was gonna be. Was he gonna gloat?

1:15:21He was like, fuck y 'all, this is America.

1:15:23He did this video, which I thought was so dope, because it showed two sides

1:15:28of him. It showed Kid Rock and it showed Bobby, right?

1:15:32And then how they both responded to Donald Trump being elected.

1:15:37The Kid Rock was the crotch -grabbing motherfucker, fuck you, right?

1:15:41Then he came out, you find this, he came out as Bobby with shorts, just

1:15:45no American flags, baseball cap, fucking reading glasses or whatever.

1:15:50And I thought it was dope.

1:15:51The dialogue that he had with it, he played the victory.

1:15:54He said, you know, we did win.

1:15:56He said, but this is not a time to gloat.

1:15:58It's so much stuff that we need to do.

1:16:00He said, all sides want to get to a certain place, but we have different

1:16:05ideas on how we're gonna get there.

1:16:07I thought that, for whatever people want to think, I thought that was showing another

1:16:12side. And also, I told him, because I would talk to him off and on.

1:16:15I said, you know what song you should do?

1:16:18You should do Nina Simone's song, Misunderstood, right?

1:16:24Just sing that shit. But I know he wouldn't never do that, because the bass

1:16:28that really likes and supports him might be like, oh, he's soft now.

1:16:33The point I'm making, even though with Tony, with the situation, I consider Tony a

1:16:37good friend of mine, for different reasons, right?

1:16:39That's why I wanted to have that moment to say that.

1:16:42But Rob Schneider, as much as they say I took away from moments on that

1:16:45show, he took away from that moment.

1:16:47I wasn't trying to be a bitch.

1:16:51friendships got to be stronger than that.

1:16:53And that's where I was with that.

1:16:54And as much as, I don't need the Kill Tony show.

1:17:27For whoever likes it or whatever, it's a platform to get on.

1:17:33It used to be, you remember back in the day, it was like, oh, I

1:17:35need to be on Letterman.

1:17:36I need to be on Carson or whatever.

1:17:38That is the, I got to get on Kill Tony.

1:17:41100%. And in some cases, it's some good and bad to that.

1:17:45There's some people that was ready for it.

1:17:46There's some people like, you know what?

1:17:47You had two or three minutes worth of jokes.

1:17:49You know what I'm saying?

1:17:50You're not ready. But it gave people some hope.

1:17:53When I was staying at the hotel the other day, three people traveled across the

1:17:56country, like, with the hopes of that, you know?

1:17:59So I know how important that show is.

1:18:02You know, is it the fan base?

1:18:04I want them to be like, oh, I can't wait to see them.

1:18:07But for me, I always, my whole career, Joe, I always wanted to be around

1:18:12the people, the places that they say the best comedians perform.

1:18:16When I started, when I was in New York, I wanted to get past it,

1:18:20the comedy cellar, not because I wanted to be a cellar dweller.

1:18:23I didn't want to be the guy in the back fucking just every weekend, just

1:18:27sit back there and tell them what story.

1:18:28But I was like, if this is where the best comics perform, I want to

1:18:32be a part of that.

1:18:33I want to be past that.

1:18:34Because when I got past in the comedy cellar, it wasn't a lot of black

1:18:37comedians working in the cellar.

1:18:39It was Greer Barnes. It was Keith Robinson.

1:18:43R .I .P. It was William Stevenson.

1:18:45Patrice. Patrice. Dave Chappelle. In fact, Barry Katz had a room, Boston Comedy Club, and

1:18:52it was Black Night on Sundays, right?

1:18:54The black comedians would look at me like, they'd say, where are you going?

1:18:56I was like, I got a spot at the cellar.

1:18:58They're like, how the fuck did you get in the cellar?

1:19:00The way I got into it was, put the work in, I hung out, got

1:19:03a couple of recommendations, and when it was time for me to showcase, I did

1:19:05my thing. But the minute I got past in the cellar, I didn't really care

1:19:09about working there all the time.

1:19:09I just wanted to be validated as like, this is the spot.

1:19:13Same thing. I get it.

1:19:13You know, same thing with the comedy store.

1:19:15Same thing with what you're doing here.

1:19:16It was that part of it.

1:19:18I get it. Greer Barnes, probably one of the most underappreciated talents in the country.

1:19:22But you know what? I've known that dude for 30 years.

1:19:25He's a funny motherfucker, and he's been funny forever.

1:19:28You know, it's so funny that you said underappreciated, because, you know, when you know

1:19:32comedians that put the work in or whatever, it's a phrase that people use, underrated,

1:19:35but then you got to ask who rated.

1:19:36You didn't use those words.

1:19:38You said underappreciated, but he is.

1:19:41I don't know. Sometimes you got to ask yourself.

1:19:44He's not underrated by comics.

1:19:45He's underappreciated by audience members for whatever reason.

1:19:48I think it's a social media thing.

1:19:50I just think he doesn't have a big presence on social media for whatever reason.

1:19:54He's a solid, solid fucking comic, though.

1:19:57Always has been. And a solid guy.

1:19:59And a good dude. But that's another thing.

1:20:00This is the area that we're in right now, and it's like, and you notice,

1:20:04it's even more so now, the most talented people aren't getting the shots if you

1:20:09don't know how to evolve.

1:20:11Well, it's not even just that, because look at Dave Chappelle, not Dave Chappelle, excuse

1:20:16me, Dave Attell. Dave Attell, I think, is one of the funniest dudes who's ever

1:20:19lived. Ever. Ever. One of the best comics ever in the history of comedy.

1:20:24And mostly does clubs. And does theaters and stuff like that.

1:20:27He should be sold out arenas all across the country.

1:20:30But he does not promote himself.

1:20:32He's not into social media.

1:20:33He doesn't do much other than specials.

1:20:36I don't think, I think Attell would be petrified.

1:20:40Not that he couldn't do it.

1:20:41And it was probably, remember with the show he had, what was that, the late

1:20:44night show? That was before anybody was doing it.

1:20:46Yeah. The late night show, he'd go to bars and stuff like that.

1:20:48Uh -huh. Insomniac. Yeah, Insomniac.

1:20:51This was before everybody was doing it.

1:20:52I mean, I don't think that some people, they like, I think he's always going

1:20:56to make millions of dollars touring or whatever.

1:20:58But I think his comfort zone is like, he's not a club act, but he's

1:21:02a club comment. I think.

1:21:03The best thing for him he ever wants to be is in front of 250

1:21:07to 500 people. Well, he's awesome in that, but he does, like, when Burt does

1:21:11arenas, he does arenas and he murders in arenas.

1:21:14I think the real thing with him is that he's just focused on his craft

1:21:18only. And the props that he gets from other comedians on podcasts and things along

1:21:23those lines is what really fuels his popularity.

1:21:26And then when people go to see him, just word of mouth.

1:21:28Do you think some people might be afraid of a certain level of fame that

1:21:33they don't want to have?

1:21:34There is that, but I don't think he's that.

1:21:36I just don't think he thinks about it.

1:21:37I mean, he doesn't even have a phone.

1:21:39Like, he carries a flip phone with him all the time.

1:21:41He has an iPhone that he, like, stores away and sometimes he uses it.

1:21:45But when you text him, he texts you on a do -do -do -do -do

1:21:48where you've got to press four times to get an S.

1:23:29But when I see him, I'm like, damn, every time I see this motherfucker, he's

1:23:33working on some new shit and has the same passion.

1:23:35Everybody doesn't have that. And that's why Dave Attell will always give other comics something

1:23:40to, like, try to achieve because he's like, you ain't going to see him doing

1:23:44the same shit. It's always a flip.

1:23:46And that's what makes him who he is.

1:23:48And that's why he gets so respected by something.

1:23:50Well, he's only focused on his craft, whereas some people are really focused on social

1:23:56media and promotions, and they have a guy that films him doing a bunch of

1:24:00wild things and edits with music.

1:24:02I've never seen so many comedians have full -out production crews with him.

1:24:08Right. On an intro. I know.

1:24:10On stage. They think that that's what they need.

1:24:13You know, they think that's what they need to separate them.

1:24:15And it does get them attention, but what it takes away, it does draw some

1:24:21focus away from what you're trying to do, which is work on your shit and

1:24:24come up with new stuff, where Attell doesn't have any of that.

1:24:27But with that said, it takes away, but then it also lets you know who

1:24:31the special people are. Right now, fucking my goddamn guy that services my pool and

1:24:36shit say he's got a special coming out.

1:24:39I don't know who doesn't have a special coming out.

1:24:41And the thing about it is, like, now, Joe, you know it, specials aren't, if

1:24:45you really look at it, specials aren't special anymore.

1:24:47It's special people. It's a weird word, right?

1:24:56Like, if someone, like Taylor Swift, puts out a concert video, it's a video of

1:25:12do that, it's who's putting it out.

1:26:43Netflix and chill day or whatever.

1:26:45If you play All It's Special that Dave ever did, you would know exactly what

1:26:51was going on in the world at that time.

1:26:55Some people put out singles.

1:26:57They got one or two jokes.

1:26:57And some people put out albums.

1:27:01He's one of those people.

1:27:02Sebastian is another one. And you look at, like, you see how his comedy is

1:27:06involved. People get older. They have different perspective on life.

1:27:09And that's what you have to fucking accept him for.

1:27:12But we don't do that.

1:27:13Right. And another thing, I don't know if this is prevalent.

1:27:18In your community, and when I say that, your community is a lot of people,

1:27:22but my community, man, it's just so much dumb beef.

1:27:28And I've, it's only one white beef I've ever known about, and that's yours.

1:28:06Like when he dressed like the white guy and had white paint on his face

1:28:09and wore the white wig.

1:28:10It was basically the same character that Dave was doing.

1:28:12Yeah, but if you look at the history of sketch comedy, I don't think Dave

1:28:15was the first person to ever paint and dress himself up to look like.

1:28:18Yeah, but it was right afterwards.

1:28:21Right after. Same slot. Anything that came after Chappelle's show, they would have compared it

1:28:28to it. Dave was saying it.

1:28:30Yeah. Dave never talked shit about nobody.

1:28:32He was like, this motherfucker's doing my show.

1:28:34Dave was saying it. Dave doesn't talk shit about nobody.

1:28:38Right. But that was only one of the problems.

1:28:44The real problem was he would sit in the back room and watch open mic

1:28:47nights and take their shit.

1:28:49They would flash the light when he was in the room so comics wouldn't do

1:28:52material. They would start doing crowd work.

1:28:55So why didn't he get exposed before that?

1:28:57Why did it just come to life?

1:28:57Because nobody had the balls to do it.

1:28:59And then he had the platform.

1:28:59Because he was famous at the time.

1:29:02And look, it cost me.

1:29:03I got banned from the store.

1:29:05I lost my agent. And I was famous.

1:29:07I was on Fear Factor.

1:29:09I was rich. I had a lot going for me where I could stick my

1:29:13neck out. But you came back stronger.

1:29:15I give another example. Like the same situation with Dave in Comedy Central and shit.

1:29:19As much as he went through that, he took a 12 -year hiatus or whatever

1:29:22you want to say. Well, what Dave showed in that is that he's a real

1:29:25artist. Right. Dave just said, fuck it.

1:29:28I'm going to disappear for a while like a legend.

1:29:30He just disappeared. I remember when I was hearing stories about Dave doing shows where

1:29:35he would set up a speaker in Seattle in the park and just start doing

1:29:38stand -up. And people were like, what the fuck?

1:29:40And for no money. People would just show up and he would just do street

1:29:44performances. But you know what was kind of where he got it from?

1:29:47You've heard of a comment.

1:29:48I'm pretty sure of it.

1:29:49Charlie Barnett. 100%. Yeah, we played Charlie Barnett on the show.

1:29:52I knew Charlie. Charlie was like, if you ever thought you were funny or whatever,

1:35:21dollars in the bank leaving with a quarter million dollar development deal just to do

1:35:24nothing that's the error it was i remember just because you weren't in la doesn't

1:35:28mean you wasn't you wasn't beating the pavement and i don't care in la you

1:35:32got la in new york nobody as a stand -up comic grinds as hard as

1:35:37a comic come from new york opposed to la and the reason why la don't

1:35:41have that many stages la don't have that many stages they used to tell you

1:35:44all the time as a stand -up comic if you if you're trying to be

1:35:47an actor whatever go to la if you want to be a great stand -up

1:35:50comic bang it out in new york and this was this was the rule back

1:35:53in the day joe let hollywood call you you just don't go to la to

1:35:57sleep on somebody's couch some people had that story but it was like you grind

1:36:00and back then everybody's got their own path you can do whatever the fuck you

1:36:04want it's just work on your act that's the point that i'm making yeah it's

1:36:08just everybody's got their own path the real problem in this conversation is what i

1:36:12said earlier it's worrying about what other people think the more you spend time worrying

1:36:17about what other people think the less you're worrying about what you're doing you want

1:36:20less you're thinking about what you're actually trying to achieve and i listen to what

1:36:24you're saying and i don't listen to what you're saying and the reason why i

1:36:28say that every time i go into this rabbit hole or whatever and it's the

1:36:32echo it's like a a a rogan angel right here and it's whispering don't read

1:36:37the comments yeah but i'm right i still read them i know you should i'm

1:36:42i'm stopping but this is another thing i didn't know what i didn't know is

1:36:48that white comedians actually have beef with each other i did not know or at

1:36:57least it's not uh you don't hear about it it's rare it's more rare and

1:37:02the ones who have beef are usually failures they're usually people that aren't doing well

1:37:12i have an example so funny and this was interesting i was at the comedy

1:37:16store are you telling me this this is so fucking funny to me about two

1:37:22months ago right i'm good friends with bill burr you know we did we had

1:37:26i'm rich bitch tour with charlie murphy me bill burr years ago and i know

1:37:30uh mark maron right i don't know what i found out is i didn't know

1:37:36mark maron the way white people know mark maron right so i know mark maron

1:37:41like when i see mark maron i was like oh that's the guy that had

1:37:44one of the greatest podcasts out that guy that was one of the alternative comedy

1:37:49favorites mark maron's special so when i see mark maron i have a certain level

1:37:54of respect like oh that's the guy who did it whatever so i was doing

1:37:57an annie letterman's show for what annie wood or whatever right and i love that

1:38:01girl um and i'm in a green room and i'm smoking and enjoying i forget

1:38:05who sponsored his weed but it was incredible right so i'm in there and i'm

1:38:09cracking jokes bill is right there and then mark is over by the side of

1:38:13the door and i'm cracking jokes with bill and everything and i felt something did

1:38:17nobody was really laughing at my jokes right that all of a sudden a whole

1:38:21fucking argument popped off and it was like it was white argument because it was

1:38:27so nice they were so gentlemen to each other it was a whole bunch of

1:38:31oh yeah but you'll never do my podcast it was like podcast beats i'm right

1:38:36in the middle i don't even know i didn't even know that they had beef

1:38:39like this but they were so gentle about it but i tell you the difference

1:38:42between white beef and black beef i never felt that i was gonna get shot

1:38:46yo i felt so safe yo and anything i thought it'd be like lawsuits the

1:38:54next murder defamation of character slander but i never knew that it was fucking caucasian

1:39:00and on caucasian beef like this is an example and it was entertaining this is

1:39:03an example mark maron was doing really well at one point in time in his

1:39:07career and now he's not so mark maron had the number one podcast and after

1:39:11a while his podcast wasn't even the top 200 it dropped off bill burr his

1:39:16careers took off right he's doing arenas he's killing it mark's not and mark finds

1:39:23reasons to criticize other people that are doing much better than him and he focuses

1:39:27on that because he thinks he should be getting more than he deserves but do

1:39:29you think that's going back to being a provocateur he knows if he talked to

1:39:32no no no i think it's going back to being bitter and jealous and thinking

1:39:36about other people instead of thinking about himself and why people don't want to go

1:39:39see him anymore he was upset when we left the comedy store because we took

1:39:43the crowds away and it's like hey you were on the fucking marquee man right

1:39:48they're not coming to see you and the reason why they're not coming to see

1:39:51you is because you're not doing well and your podcast was in the top it

1:39:55was number one and when it was at number one by the way this is

1:39:58what i always say about mark maron he was great mark man was fun to

1:40:01hang out with when he was killing it right because he was happy because he

1:40:05was getting validation because he had the number one podcast we were friends like i

1:40:08did his podcast he did mine we had a good time i'd hug him when

1:40:12i see him like we had gone back and forth many times having beef with

1:40:16each other his problem let me finish his problem was when everybody else started doing

1:40:21really good and he started dropping off right that's what happened just what i don't

1:40:25understand why can't people understand that you have a moment like i was because he's

1:40:30a fucking narcissist and he wants the moment to always be around him he wants

1:40:34it to always be about him and when other people are doing better than him

1:40:37he wants to talk shit about them and that's where bill had a problem with

1:40:40it you think being a narcissist in this field is a bad thing for some

1:40:43reason i think that kind refuse you to be the person that you are to

1:40:46be determined to do and not give a fuck about what nobody thinks well having

1:40:49self -respect and having an ego where you care about what you put out yes

1:40:55that's a good thing but making it all about you and not being able to

1:40:59appreciate other people's work is crazy because other people doing well can be fuel for

1:41:04you to be inspired and do better yourself and it's a positive thing right and

1:41:09if these people are your friends and you love them and you care about them

1:41:11you should be happy that they're killing it and if you're not killing it anymore

1:41:14you should try to figure out why because it's not like the door's not open

1:41:18it's not like you're not getting on stage it's not like you're not putting out

1:41:20specials you should probably figure out why your podcast dropped from number one to not

1:41:26even in the top 200 anymore without anything happening you didn't get arrested there was

1:41:30no scandal there was nothing crazy you should try to figure that out and he

1:41:33doesn't do that because he's instead bitter bitter and jealous he's always been like that

1:41:38it's a story about john stewart and andrew schultz came on the podcast and told

1:41:42a story about john stewart and marron where marron confronted john stewart where john stewart

1:41:46got some television show he called him a fucking sellout he yelled at him all

1:41:50this different shit john stewart left the show and they hired marron to do the

1:41:54same show yeah the same show that he was calling john stewart for being a

1:41:58sellout so how did you go from that to okay for you to have one

1:42:02of the biggest podcasts at some point in your career you had to be likable

1:42:05or you think people just wanted to do this show there wasn't very many podcasts

1:42:09back then the thing that killed marron's podcast my personal opinion no hate is that

1:42:14he has this rant at the beginning of his podcast that's not entertaining i don't

1:42:18think it's good and he the rant was long and he would just ramble about

1:42:23himself was very self -obsessed and i just don't think it was good and i

1:42:26think that was part of the problem it's also the problem was how he interviewed

1:42:30people he had a very confrontational interview style specifically with some comedians that he felt

1:42:34like were below him or that he could pick on you would think that that

1:42:38style would work in this day and age no no no no no people don't

1:42:41want always to be uncomfortable they want to like you man they want you to

1:42:45be a good person people want train wrecks they want train wrecks for 15 second

1:42:49or 30 minute 30 second instagram clips they don't want train wrecks to be their

1:42:55primary thing they're listening to when they're in traffic on the way to work but

1:42:58the people that host these podcasts now like i think people go on these podcasts

1:43:03now and like this oh this is gonna be clickbait we're gonna go viral yeah

1:43:07but that's they're not that talented that's why they're doing it is because that's their

1:43:11only method of getting attention if they were entertaining and interesting and fascinating then their

1:43:18podcast would be about that you know what it's all in what you're trying to

1:43:23focus on what i try to focus on in my podcast is who do i

1:43:26want to talk to i never have someone on and go oh this would be

1:43:31great it'd be very controversial people fucking hate them it'll be crazy they'll say wild

1:43:35shit i never do that my podcast is only about who do i want to

1:43:40talk to that's why i have a lot of people on that aren't even remotely

1:43:43famous because they're interesting right i find them interesting i find with a book they

1:43:47wrote interesting the documentary they made interesting i want to know something about them it

1:43:51stimulates my curiosity do you think that there's going to be a a shift do

1:43:56you think that these salacious interviews these interviews with the provoctor you don't think about

1:44:02it okay that's my key i don't think about i would say this you know

1:44:06what's funny about what you said that i was with dave a while ago and

1:44:10he echoed the exact same thing and i was having this conversation with him he

1:44:14said d i don't even think about that shit yeah don't think about it there's

1:44:18other things to think about this is i've said this too many times if people

1:44:21have heard this before i'm sorry think of your focus and your attention like a

1:44:26number think of you have like a hundred points in a day to spend on

1:44:31things if you spend 30 of those points thinking about haters or 30 of those

1:44:36thinking about bitter people 30 thinking about other people that are doing better than you

1:44:40that's 30 that you robbed from the 100 that you have to focus on your

1:44:45life i have things to do man i have a family i have friends i

1:44:49have loved ones i have interests i have hobbies i have comedy and podcasts and

1:44:55the ufc and all these different things that i like to do and i think

1:44:57about those things i don't think about negative stupid things with people that have bitter

1:45:02angry minds that are concentrating on other people's success and trying to tear them down

1:45:07all the time because they're trying to tear them down all the time because they

1:45:09compare themselves to them and they don't like how they stack up they don't like

1:45:13the fact that person's doing better they don't like the fact that person's more successful

1:45:17so they try to take things either out of context or they try to misrepresent

1:45:21who that person is they try to change public perception of that person to try

1:45:26to drag that person down and it's transparent the reason why it doesn't work is

1:45:30because people inherently know what you're trying to do it might get people oh there's

1:45:35beef oh there's beef those are simple -minded people that you're always going to attract

1:45:39but you're not going to change people's opinions of things right it's it's a trick

1:45:43it's a trap that you're playing on yourself it's a waste of your precious resources

1:45:48you only have so much time in the day my time i spend on things

1:45:53that i think are interesting or beneficial or things that excite my curiosity and i

1:45:58think that is the way i like to live my life now if you like

1:46:01live your life constantly engaged in beefs and being filled with anxiety and stress and

1:46:06you want to do that okay but those are bitter fucking people i don't want

1:46:09to be a bitter person in another life could you have been a therapist well

1:46:14i majored in psychology for the brief amount of time that i was in college

1:46:18that was what i was interested in but it was i was doing that because

1:46:21i was fighting at the time and i was trying to figure out how to

1:46:25manage my mind so i was trying to figure out the inner workings of the

1:46:28human psyche do you think i know this is i'm not do you think your

1:46:33success made you a more calm person to not give a fuck well it certainly

1:46:41helps right you don't have to give a fuck if you have enough money that

1:46:45you could just like disappear off into the sunset never have to worry about money

1:46:48because a lot of people are always worried about money and so you're always constantly

1:46:51in this state of anxiety you're trying to get more that helps but it's also

1:46:55it's like there's other things in life i concentrate on my loved ones i concentrate

1:47:00on my friends i concentrate on things i enjoy doing on fun this this life

1:47:05is short man you and i are 58 years old we're more than halfway dead

1:47:08why would you spend time concentrating on people you don't like like it's one thing

1:47:13if someone's wronging you it's one thing if you find out you have a business

1:47:17partner that's been stealing money or you have someone who's uh lying about you uh

1:47:21uh dane cook no i'm just saying his own brother stole from him i know

1:47:27dane is like this yes the fuck yeah it's very very interesting and i'm at

1:47:33a place right now i was um i was with john ham right san francisco

1:47:39and i had just did a show with dave and it was interesting he said

1:47:42something to me he's in the back and he's with his wife and me kicking

1:47:44it he used to come out to summer camp and everything hang out with us

1:47:47i don't want to say we like super friends but we have mutual respect for

1:47:50each other and it was interesting because we're in the green room and this is

1:47:53out there i just slayed this audience or whatever right and and i'm feeling good

1:47:57and he said donald he said what is it that you really want to do

1:48:00he said what is it that you want i said what kind of question he

1:48:03said no i mean what is what is tv is a tv show is it

1:48:07movies i was like john i'm doing exactly what i want to do for me

1:48:13to be able to wake up not have to work for anybody call my own

1:48:17shots make a fair wage take care of my families enjoy my friends and everything

1:48:22and it's me connecting with a god -given talent anything else is a bonus i

1:48:29don't look at it like i need the private jet and everything certain things like

1:48:33you know that would be nice but i just look at what this life has

1:48:36given me and i'm appreciative of that i know so many people that of my

1:48:41class whatever that aren't doing nearly as well as i am or even the ones

1:48:46that all right that don't mean that they're happy you know i'm saying so when

1:48:49he asked my question i didn't think any bad of what i was like this

1:48:52i don't get caught up on looking at somebody they got this they got that

1:48:57i like this am i happy am i comfortable do i get to do what

1:49:00i want so whether i tell people all this all the time whether i get

1:49:03another film opportunity whether i get another tv show or whatever or any of that

1:49:08i'm living what some people's dreams are yes and it's not my dream it's my

1:49:16reality yes and i also had to realize this is so easy for us to

1:49:20do you can be so connected with somebody and even with um my situation with

1:49:24my connection with dave and everything i'm a huge fan of dave he's giving me

1:49:28great opportunities and everything but at some point in my life i had to say

1:49:32you can't be caught up in somebody else's dream so much that you forget your

1:49:36realities and my reality is whether i'm alongside of him or what i'm doing i

1:49:42got to continue to be down there rawlins i got to continue to support my

1:49:45family i got to continue to think do things that i do and it's so

1:49:48easy you it's so easy for me to get caught i'm like i'm rolling with

1:49:52dave we on the jets we're doing this type of shit but then i'll lose

1:49:55focus on who i am and i realize for me and my career continues to

1:49:59go when i know how to make that separation i do have yeah but the

1:50:03thing is even when you're caught up with dave you still love him and you

1:50:07don't hate him at all you're not you're not jealous of him not at all

1:50:11you might get caught up in the wave because you're hanging out with one of

1:50:13the greatest comics that's ever lived but it doesn't mean that it's a negative and

1:50:17you know another thing let me add to that and i'm not blowing my own

1:50:20horn or whatever like you say one of the greatest comedians ever lived right if

1:50:24a person had a conversation with dave chappelle people could say whatever i'm worrying about

1:50:27people think if you ask dave who is in his top five comedians my name's

1:50:34gonna come up so as much as people they always talk about they always try

1:50:39to pin me like blah blah this and everything i respect the fact that i

1:50:44he respects me i respect him when we work together we push each other we

1:50:48make each other whatever people want to say we make each other better and what

1:50:52other people understand is that like he's like truly my friend you know i mean

1:50:58it's not like i just work on a show he's my friend and even when

1:51:02some of my fondest memories especially when i come here is when we was doing

1:51:06those fucking shows yeah when we was doing shit nobody was doing we're doing those

1:51:11lockdown shows that was fun yo it was so wild times it was it was

1:51:16it's all it was already we already have a community we all have mutual respect

1:51:19for each other but the thing that made that so special wasn't nobody doing this

1:51:23shit right that's what made it and it really one thing about the pandemic it

1:51:27made you appreciate life a lot more than before the pandemic yeah it made you

1:51:33appreciate freedom freedom ability to do shows yeah remember we did those shows outside and

1:51:39everybody was wearing a mask it was so stupid but we did but we and

1:51:42they all got tested too we got they was i i was i had so

1:51:47much fun during the pandemic i was almost embarrassed to show the pictures i wanted

1:51:51to show like faceless shit yo no mask we would take pictures and people was

1:51:57like this look at him he could kill my grandmother yeah all right first of

1:52:01all you did it dave did i was like people's like this oh it must

1:52:04be nice to have rich friends that have testing machines i was like you're absolutely

1:52:07right it is it's beautiful it is the most amazing shit ever dave chapelle raped

1:52:14my nose for two summers in a row When we were doing the shows in

1:52:18the cornfields and shit, but this is what people don't understand.

1:52:21He took the opportunity, that village of Yellow Springs, he made it as safe as

1:52:27it could be. Like any place we would go, hotels, staff, everybody had an opportunity

1:52:32to get tested. And I remember, this was very interesting.

1:52:38When the bubble, we did one, this was Bob Saget, RIP, we were doing these

1:52:43shows. And I think that before Bob passed away, when he came out to Yellow

1:52:48Springs and was hanging out with Dave and us and everything, it gave him some

1:52:50incentive to want to go back on the road and do it.

1:52:52He just got really excited about doing it again.

1:52:56We did like 55 shows.

1:52:59The summer was over. The run was clear.

1:53:02We had no positives or anything.

1:53:04Dave extended the show another week.

1:53:07And that week was when the bubble popped, right?

1:53:10And now everybody's like freaking out.

1:53:13Like, oh, my God. These same women that was people's coming out there when they

1:53:17was getting flown out in jets.

1:53:19They weren't getting traffic. But Dave created his environment.

1:53:22He wanted his friends around.

1:53:23We was going to restaurants.

1:53:24We would have the whole spot.

1:53:25We was just doing all this stuff.

1:53:27Nobody was thinking about the possible consequences of that.

1:53:30And I remember this one girl was like, oh, my God, I don't even know

1:53:32why I'm here. Then I looked at Dave.

1:53:34I was like, yo, man, damn, we almost made it, man, through.

1:53:37He was like, Daniel, it's going to be okay.

1:53:40He said, you got to realize this is the reason why we test.

1:53:44When we first got our first positive, had we not been testing, it could have

1:53:48been crazy. And we got a first positive because dudes went to do somebody else's

1:53:52podcast and they didn't test.

1:53:54Remember that? I remember that.

1:53:55I remember that because I remember that scene.

1:54:00It was so funny. Yeah, that was here.

1:54:02And it was like something was different because we had one positive.

1:54:07And you remember that backstage used to be packed out, right?

1:54:10It started getting lower and lower.

1:54:11Yeah. It was basically like me, Sife Sounds.

1:54:14Somebody else was in the green room, right?

1:54:16And then Big Jay came.

1:54:18That's one of my friends, good friends.

1:54:19Big Jay came back. He had this look on his face like it's over, right?

1:54:23And he came in there and I looked, I said, boss man got it.

1:54:27He's like, yep, right? And another thing Dave could have did, this is why I

1:54:30respect his character. He could have been, at that time, he could have just been

1:54:34in the mask, went on stage, went back out.

1:54:36He canceled the show. But the funniest shit, it's a hole at Stubbs.

1:54:40Roman sold out, right? And then Cena comes back and Cena was like, I need

1:54:46you to go out there and tell people that the show is canceled, right?

1:54:49I said, you don't need me to do that shit, nigga.

1:54:52Because the minute, it's one thing, if I go out there, people are going to

1:54:56be like, show starting, right?

1:54:58And as a comedian, I'm not going to not tell jokes.

1:55:01And then I'm like, oh yeah, Dave, not going to show up.

1:55:03But that was, the crazy thing about that, everybody, at the Lion Hotel, they was

1:55:08making jokes, Joe. They call it COVID row because we had the whole floor locked

1:55:15down, right? And everybody on our team got it.

1:55:19But it felt like an old school chicken pock party, you know what I'm saying?

1:55:23It's like, we got it, we got it.

1:55:25What I tell you, man, what we did, like, everything was like, okay, make sure

1:55:29you had your vitamins, all that type of shit.

1:55:31But the beauty of it was, we was like, you know, people was testing out

1:55:34like eight or nine days, right?

1:55:36So we thought we was going to leave.

1:55:38After a while, we was like, I was like, wait a minute, the next room

1:55:40was going to be in 10 days.

1:55:41And for some reason, everybody went back to being negative.

1:55:45We closed and did more shows and we got the fuck about it here.

1:55:48But it was a beautiful time, man.

1:55:50It was a beautiful time.

1:55:51It was a fun time.

1:55:52It was a fun time.

1:55:53But it was crazy. And then we did that, what that fucking joint we did,

1:55:57it was in Tacoma? Mm -hmm.

1:56:00The Superdome. That was wild.

1:56:03That was 27 ,000, 25 ,000?

1:56:05Whatever it was, we broke the Tacoma Dome record.

1:56:07I never been in a place where the laughter was so hard, it felt like

1:56:12helicopters. It was crazy. It was crazy.

1:56:15It was crazy. This is what I respect about what you guys did.

1:56:18You got people saying they're doing arenas and shit, but normally, but that was pre

1:56:22-COVID, brother. It was pre -COVID?

1:56:23Yeah, that was pre -COVID.

1:56:24That was before everything popped off.

1:56:26What I will say about a real arena show, you got the arena show where

1:56:30a quarter of the venue is being used for stage, right?

1:56:35So it ain't the true capacity.

1:56:37But the shows you motherfuckers were doing, it was in the round.

1:56:42Right. Well, the wildest thing was walking through the crowd to get to the stage.

1:56:46Man, crazy times. Those are crazy times.

1:56:47You've experienced this shit of that walk from the UFC shit.

1:56:52Man, I'm so grateful for you guys' friendship and everything.

1:56:55And for me, it was so special for me because I didn't sell a ticket.

1:57:01Nobody else, no opening stuff.

1:57:03You and Dave sold those tickets, right?

1:57:04But the best feeling for me, Joe, was when I go out and DJ trauma

1:57:09and be like, you seen them on HBO's The Wire.

1:57:11You seen them on BMF, whatever.

1:57:13But simple line. But you fell in love with Ashley Larry Chappelle's show.

1:57:16And them people fucking go crazy.

1:57:18I don't give a fuck if you've ever been in a fist fight in your

1:57:21life when you come through them tunnels.

1:57:31And every show we had, there was no room for being okay.

1:57:44my face green. That was because of a Nashville show that we were doing that

1:57:48we had to cancel. Yeah, I didn't know that.

1:57:50That's what that was. Yeah, we were supposed to do a show that weekend.

1:57:53And I got COVID the previous weekend.

1:57:55I was doing an arena with Tony in Florida.

1:57:58And I got COVID in Florida.

1:58:00And then I made that video on, like, a Tuesday or a Wednesday.

1:58:05It was, like, the third day after I got COVID, when I got over it.

1:58:08And I was like, you know, I feel fine, but we have to cancel the

1:58:10shows this weekend. Right. And that's when all the shit went down because I took

1:58:14Ivermectin. And that was what that was.

1:58:16That was those. Oh, yeah.

1:58:17I remember that. It was like, oh, he has to answer everything.

1:58:19Yo, if you don't have the answer, at least he's fucking trying to find it.

1:58:22It's so. Well, whether or not I had the answer, the crazy thing is I

1:58:26was better. I was already better.

1:58:29And they turned. face green on cnn like we got to see how crazy the

1:58:34media really is like they didn't want to hear nothing but you have to take

1:58:38this vaccine and you have to do that and if you didn't take this vaccine

1:58:41you're a part of the problem it's sorry that i just don't and as as

1:58:46devastating as that time was i'm just how is it just like fucking over now

1:58:55is it herd immunity how is it just like yeah it's herd immunity it's it's

1:58:59yeah it's also you know everybody who got it got it you got immunity because

1:59:04of it and then also whatever variants are still left they're significantly diminished that's how

2:01:17those after parties when we go to the line you had a dj we would

2:01:20laugh and laugh we would laugh till two three o 'clock in the morning i

2:01:25you know i was so much fun girl i was dating the time she couldn't

2:01:30believe that she was like i'll be like this so what do you do i

2:01:33was like well i was at the line kicking it with dave and joe what

2:01:37y 'all doing just talking laughing till 3 30 in the morning they was like

2:01:40get the fuck out of here you was fucking no no i wasn't we was

2:01:45just on some brohood shit it was just we had so much and we also

2:01:49realized how special it was that we could do this while the whole world was

2:01:53locked down yep i'm telling you i was embarrassed to show pictures my mother would

2:01:56call me you better be careful out there i'm like man i'm getting tested we

2:02:00got tested more than probably anybody in the country and that's i got tested every

2:02:04day because i was doing podcasts through the whole thing i did your show doing

2:02:07that one time yeah and then we didn't i sat down before i got the

2:02:10results the last time i was here you was like did he get the test

2:02:15i'm like i'm like just please don't come in here like get this motherfucker out

2:02:20of here well we definitely had a couple people that tested positive we had to

2:02:24get them out and i tested positive once but the thing about it to making

2:02:28those taking those precautions you could isolate it you knew where it came and you

2:02:32shut it down that's one thing if you're not doing that it's all over the

2:02:35place just think about it if imagine if jamie would have got covid then we

2:02:40would have never seen his sexy side now jamie got covid he got covid before

2:02:43anybody he got covid really early on when there was no vaccine no treatment no

2:02:47nothing he had to take a whole week off um maybe that's why he has

2:02:53the attitude that he has yo y 'all getting all this we did the kanye

2:02:58podcast you you had covid that week right yeah yeah he missed the kanye podcast

2:03:29mind i never went to a diddy party i have a photo but i never

2:03:32went to a diddy party yeah it's like i think people are going to be

2:03:38wiser if something like that happens again could it ever happen again yeah 100 yeah

2:03:43100 there's a lot of people that think they engineered that whole thing they wanted

2:03:47it to happen it's the largest transfer of upward transfer of wealth in human history

2:03:51so many small businesses went down look at big businesses got made more money look

2:03:57what it did to zoom yep zoom took off i remember zoom because um i

2:04:01was i i had a show in naples whatever i met this doctor that he

2:04:06wanted me to be on this podcast and i was like how we gonna do

2:04:08he said we can do it by zoom this was when it was only like

2:04:11for like business people it was really like the nerdy thing yeah that's what it

2:04:15used to be yeah it used to be but the pandemic it blew it up

2:04:19it was like now zoom is like that's the best way you don't want to

2:04:23talk to somebody on the phone they call you oh i'm on a zoom right

2:04:25now it is so like in everybody's household and that just blew up so many

2:04:29businesses did the same thing is anybody using that anymore zoom yeah they use it

2:04:33for an excuse not to talk to somebody yeah do they do zoom podcasts anymore

2:04:38do people do zoom podcasts i never hear that term it used to be things

2:04:42like oh we're gonna do it on zoom i don't hear that anymore you A

2:04:45few other platforms exist now.

2:04:47I don't even think people discuss it.

2:04:48Yeah, they had one one.

2:04:49Was it Clubhouse or whatever?

2:04:50All of these things. Oh, yeah.

2:04:52Clubhouse. Clubhouse is a big one.

2:04:54That was a big one where people were essentially doing podcasts.

2:04:57Like, anybody could just, like, chime in and talk shit.

2:05:00People was getting, like, a million followers in three days and shit.

2:05:02Oh, yeah. There was a lot of that.

2:05:04And a lot of people thought that that was going to keep going.

2:05:06Like, Clubhouse is going to be the new thing.

2:05:08I'm like, this is just bad podcasting.

2:05:10And it's what there was only so many things.

2:05:12That battle, the versus battles that they do now when they have, like, it's mostly

2:05:17it's been hip -hop and R &B.

2:05:19I think it was, who was it?

2:05:21It was, damn, Swiss Beats and Timbaland, I think.

2:05:25They started this thing during the pandemic.

2:05:27It was versus, right, where you have an artist versus another artist in, like, a

2:05:32competitive type of situation. They didn't win anything, but it was just entertaining for everybody.

2:05:36And that went from, like, it was so low level.

2:05:39Like, people was in front of their computers.

2:05:41It was freezing up and everything.

2:05:42But it was what everybody was doing.

2:05:44Now, that's, like, one of the biggest things now.

2:05:46They did one at Madison Square Gardens.

2:05:49Like, it's a big thing now when you want to – it's just like a

2:05:52competition. Like, you got – I think they had cash money and no limit records.

2:05:57But it's very – I don't see no white versus, but it's a popular thing,

2:06:00and it started because of the pandemic.

2:06:02Well, so many businesses started during the pandemic because a lot of people got laid

2:06:05off, so they started their own business.

2:06:07A lot of online businesses started.

2:06:09A lot of people quit their jobs because they realized, look, they could just take

2:06:12this shit away from me at any minute.

2:06:13Why am I doing something that I hate when I thought there was security in

2:06:16it? There's no security in it.

2:06:17I'm going to start my own business.

2:06:18Also, even, like, you're an example of what happens when you finally realize that you

2:06:27don't need Hollywood the way it used to be.

2:06:29No. Well, we figured that out a long time ago.

2:06:32We figured that out when the podcast started kicking off in, like, the early 2010s.

2:06:39I realized that. I was like, this is – I don't need TV shows anymore.

2:06:43We figured that out in, like, 2013, 2014.

2:06:46And Hollywood is not, like – it used to be – I'm a very old

2:06:51school guy, but I remember when I first started, you couldn't make it in this

2:06:55business. You had to be in New York or L .A.

2:06:58Yep. There was no producers going to – they wasn't going to Toledo, Ohio.

2:07:03There was no way. This was big.

2:07:04Well, there was no comedy communities outside of New York and L .A.

2:07:08No, not at all. Not a real community.

2:07:10There might have been, like, a good club that had some – like, Denver always

2:07:14had, like, good opening acts, good community.

2:07:17Comedy Works was responsible for that.

2:07:19But it wasn't, like, a real hub like Austin is now.

2:07:22And that wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been for the pandemic.

2:07:25People wouldn't have moved. They wouldn't have moved.

2:07:27No. And you brought a whole community here.

2:07:29As much as – this place was always big for music or whatever, but, I

2:07:34mean, there's no way anybody cannot agree with, like, what you did and what you

2:07:38made it appealing to a lot of people is that you could go somewhere else,

2:07:43get a better quality of life.

2:07:44Yeah. And everything. Lower cost of living, better quality of life, no traffic, nicer people.

2:07:50Yeah. And no Hollywood bullshit.

2:07:51The problem with the – L .A.

2:07:54is always going to be poisoned by the idea of going there to become famous.

2:08:00Right. That whole idea was – it was permeated in the culture of L .A.

2:08:05and that fame was, like, the number one commodity.

2:08:07But back then it was – that was the case.

2:08:10It was the case. But don't – go ahead.

2:08:11I'm sorry. But the problem is that's bad for art.

2:08:14That's bad for your ability to produce shit.

2:08:17I mean, you got great comics that came out of L .A., but that was

2:08:20in spite of what L .A.

2:08:21had to offer. Right. It wasn't because of.

2:08:24Whereas Austin, like, the main reason people come here, first of all, is Kill Tony.

2:08:29Because, like you said, Kill Tony is one of the rare places where you can

2:08:33be a comic that's been doing comedy three, four years, I mean, even just start

2:08:37now, but you got some talent, you could have a fucking career.

2:08:40Yeah. Like, a real career and it'll launch.

2:08:42Look, look, you got Cam Patterson who's on SNL right now.

2:08:45You got all these people like William Montgomery, David Lucas.

2:08:48They're killing it on the road, selling out everywhere they go.

2:08:55Tony. But, you know, another thing that they don't understand is, like, this is what

2:08:57I say and I use you as an example.

2:10:14Even with Kill Tony, the fact that during the pandemic, when he could have let

2:10:25do it. Nobody ever respects the journey.

2:10:31And if you think about it, Joe, and you probably the same way, most successful

2:10:35people, and I know some very, very wealthy people, right?

2:10:38And when they talk about their career or whatever, they hardly ever talk about the

2:10:43yacht. They have ever talked about the fucking mansion they got in Paris.

2:10:48You know, they talk about, it was just me and my wife and we drove

2:10:51a Toyota, you know, a Toyota Corolla and we was like, we was down to

2:10:54our last 10 bucks and she did this.

2:10:57That's the most interesting part of the story.

2:10:59for most successful people, and people don't understand that.

2:11:02Right, they only think about where you got to, and I want to get to

2:11:04there, too. They want to skip everything.

2:11:06I hear people right now, I want to be like, stand up.

2:11:09I'm like, all right, well, no, when I was doing HBO's The Wire, right, this

2:11:14guy I knew, I grew up with, he was like, this motherfucker said, yo, D,

2:11:18what's the number to The Wire?

2:11:20I want to call him.

2:11:21I want to be on The Wire.

2:11:23Like, there's a Wire, hey, is this David Simon?

2:11:27Yeah, I could be Omar.

2:11:29They don't, I was like, and guess what?

2:11:32If I knew the number to The Wire, I'm not giving it to you.

2:11:35I'm not giving it to you.

2:11:36I want you to get that busy signal.

2:11:40That's what it is. Nobody ever wants to respect the grind, and they all, everybody

2:11:45wants the rewards of the grind.

2:11:47Well, it's not everybody. It's just people that are, they're missing it.

2:11:51They're not getting what it's all about.

2:11:53What it's all, like, Kill Tony's a great example of that.

2:11:56I was there in the early days of Kill Tony.

2:11:58When Tony started out in 2013, there was no one in the crowd.

2:12:02There was no one there.

2:12:03It was a small show.

2:12:05You'd have a few comedians.

2:12:06You know, I was doing it back before I was back at the comedy store,

2:12:09but I was still banned.

2:12:10So I was doing it from the Ice House.

2:12:12Right. And he didn't do it thinking it was going to be the number one

2:12:15show in the world, and he was going to be on Netflix.

2:12:18And he did it because it was fun to do.

2:12:21And he loved it. And he wanted to do a great job.

2:12:22And he wanted to make it better every week, and he kept doing it and

2:12:25kept getting better at it.

2:12:26It's the same thing with this podcast.

2:12:28This podcast didn't make money for years.

2:12:30It didn't make any money for years.

2:12:32It cost money. But the most successful people are the ones, like, even with when

2:12:37I first started doing comedy, right, I never, you have some comedians that go out

2:12:41there like, I want to do comedy.

2:12:43I want to get the money.

2:12:44I want to get pussy off of it, right?

2:12:46When I first started, I never, the only thing I wanted to do, Joe, I

2:12:50wanted to be good. I was like this, if I'm good, all those other things

2:12:53that are rewards to that, they will happen.

2:12:56But I had to be good first.

2:12:57And here's the thing that I think, especially when you have these, like, social media

2:13:01comedians or whatever, the thing that, the interesting thing about it, it's kind of hard

2:13:06to tell somebody to work on their craft when they're getting all the perks of

2:13:12what the craft can present them at an early stage.

2:13:15It's hard to tell somebody that's only been doing it for two years, that's making

2:13:20$50 ,000 or $100 ,000 a month off of monetizing something, they're like this, you

2:13:24need to get better. Hello?

2:13:27Well, they don't have to.

2:13:28Like, do whatever the fuck you want to do.

2:13:31If you just want to do that, do that.

2:13:32And also, some of them are going to figure it out anyway.

2:13:35Some of them are going to figure out, I'm not getting better, I'll get better,

2:13:39work harder at it. There's going to be people that don't figure things out no

2:13:43matter what you do in this life.

2:13:44There's going to be a bunch of people that have a distorted perception of what

2:13:48success is all about and what you really want.

2:13:50It's always going to be that.

2:13:52What do you, what do you, what is, this is an interesting question.

2:13:54What is your definition of success?

2:13:58Happiness. Happiness and doing something that you enjoy doing.

2:14:01It's something that's challenging. So what is your definition of happiness?

2:14:05Friendship, love, doing something I enjoy doing, doing it well, doing it better all the

2:14:12time, getting better at it, you know.

2:14:14I mean, you're, and struggle.

2:14:15You're always going to have some kind of a struggle.

2:14:17And that struggle, hopefully, is you trying to be better at the thing that you're

2:14:21doing. You, what gives you, this is an interesting question.

2:14:25What gives you the incentive to always continue to want to perform?

2:14:33What gives you incentive to always want to do Joe Rogan and Friends when you

2:14:37could just sit back and fucking just do everything?

2:14:39It's fun. It's fun. It's, first of all, the green room on Tuesday and Wednesday

2:14:44nights at the mothership. Some of the funniest times I've ever had in my fucking

2:14:47life. It's so fun. We have so much fun there.

2:14:50There's Ron White there and Shane Gillis and Tony.

2:14:53And it's fun. It's, I mean, it's community.

2:14:55Sounds like you're trying to get me to change my fight.

2:16:00And I like to do things that I find that are interesting and challenging.

2:16:04And I like to have conversations with interesting people.

2:16:07And I like the fact that people enjoy it still.

2:16:09You know, when I first met you, and I already knew that you had the

2:16:16ultimate platform, right? And I never, this is me.

2:16:19And I don't know if this is what happened.

2:16:21But I was like, I never want to be like, hey, Joe Rogan, I'm Daniel

2:16:24Robinson, so -and -so. And the only respect I ever wanted to get from my

2:16:27peers and people that were doing it was, like, from the stage.

2:16:30You know? I always, like, I was like, if we ever make the connection, I

2:16:34wanted to be off of, yo, this motherfucker is funny first.

2:16:37Not just like, hey, you know, I rock with Dave or anything.

2:16:39And I think that that was what happened.

2:16:41I used to spend time.

2:16:42And I never, even to this day, I don't, you know, I just look at,

2:16:47like, I just want people.

2:16:49You can respect me as a man and respect my character or whatever.

2:16:53But at the end of the day, what I love to do the most is

2:16:56stand up. I want you to be like, yo, this motherfucker puts the work in.

2:16:59And then we can build everything off of that.

2:17:02That's what respect I want.

2:17:03I want the respect from what I put in and the work I put in.

2:17:06And if people can acknowledge that, then that's what builds my relationship with you.

2:17:10It's built my relationships with all of these, all these guys.

2:17:13Bert. All of these people that I fuck with now, it ain't because anything other

2:17:19than, like, yo, he's a dope comic, and then you can find out that I'm

2:17:22a good dude after that.

2:17:23Yeah, it's that, and then after that, it's got to be, like, are you cool?

2:17:30Right. Yeah. Barry Ketch said that one time.

2:17:32He said that in one of his podcasts.

2:17:34It's one of the things that separate, like, who goes on the road or so

2:17:38-and -so is if you're a good hang.

2:17:39Yeah. Oh, my God. That's everything.

2:17:41I don't know how many people quote Barry Ketch, but I want to share this

2:17:45story. You might be the only one.

2:17:47Probably the only one. But you said something earlier about undeniable, right?

2:17:52Yeah. I remember when I first moved from D .C.

2:17:55and I moved up to New York, I was doing the Chitlin circuit, the black

2:17:57circuit. I was popular in the black community, whatever.

2:18:00I was like, I don't think this is going to be enough.

2:18:02I want to do the mainstream stuff.

2:18:04I want to do these other things, right?

2:18:06And Barry Ketch, Dave used to host this comedy night at this place called El

2:18:11Flamingo's in New York. And Barry Ketch saw me there one day.

2:18:15He was like, I don't think I've ever seen a comedian that go in front

2:18:19of an audience that would be ready to rip someone's head off.

2:18:23And you could hear silence.

2:18:25You know, that's the control I had with the audience.

2:18:26And so we built sort of a respect for each other.

2:18:29And I remember one time I was at the Comedy Cellar and he was there.

2:18:33And I knew that he was, back then, whatever you want to say about him,

2:18:36nobody had a roster bigger than Barry Ketch.

2:18:39Back then in like 97 or whatever, he had everybody.

2:18:45The list goes on and on.

2:18:47And I knew he was a fan of mine.

2:18:49And I said, Barry, man, I'm trying to work these clubs, these mainstream clubs, but

2:18:54I'm having a hard time getting into passing these clubs.

2:18:57I was like, could you make a phone call or whatever for me?

2:19:00And he looked at me.

2:19:01He said, Donnell, he said, this is what you do.

2:19:04I'll probably do the worst.

2:19:05Everybody does a better Barry Ketch.

2:19:07You got to do Barry like this.

2:19:09Yes. Okay, I'll try to get it.

2:19:11He was like. This is what you do.

2:19:13And slow it down. He said, Donnell, just rip.

2:19:19Right, he said. Yeah, be undeniable.

2:19:21That's what he said. He said, just be.

2:19:23He said, I'm not taught.

2:19:24And I tell, this is advice I give people.

2:19:26They say, well, I need so and so.

2:19:27I was like, I'm not talking about have one good set and you have four

2:19:31bad sets. I'm talking about the consistency where every time somebody sees you go on

2:19:37that stage, you blowing the roof off.

2:19:40And once you do that, if the managers are going to come to you, they're

2:19:44going to hear about it.

2:19:45That's one of the things that a lot of people try to skip.

2:19:48They're like, oh, how was your set?

2:19:49It was okay, but I can't talk to you.

2:19:52Unless you're just straight just destroying shit everywhere, then you've got other shit to work

2:19:58on. Yeah, and there's also a lot of people that are very delusional about how

2:20:01well they're doing because they want so much.

2:20:04They want it all to be about them.

2:20:05So they think they should have already had this.

2:20:07They should have already had that.

2:20:08Why don't I have a sitcom?

2:20:09Why don't I have a this?

2:20:10Why don't I have a that?

2:20:11And I always said this is another thing.

2:20:13Even with these lineups, you do these shows, whatever.

2:20:16Always say that you have time to have a defining moment.

2:20:19If you're in a room, right, and for some reason the room is on fire,

2:20:24the club is on fire, everybody is ripping.

2:20:27You probably won't stand out as much as that night when everybody was bombing.

2:20:33You've seen rooms where everybody come back and say that crowd was weird, but then

2:20:37you've got one motherfucker back there like this.

2:20:39I don't give a fuck what y 'all doing.

2:20:41I'm going to elevate this.

2:20:44Those are the times when you've got to fucking stand up.

2:20:48Yeah, well, we used to see that all the time at the store, like late

2:20:51night at the store in particular.

2:20:53Where like, you know, because the way the store works, the show starts at 8

2:20:57p .m. and it goes on until 2 a .m.

2:20:58And there's a lot of people that get there at 8 p .m.

2:21:02that are like, you know, tourists that are in town.

2:21:05And they sit there for the whole fucking show.

2:21:08They came to see the comedy store.

2:21:10Yeah. So by the time 12, 30 rolls around, fuck, they've seen everything.

2:21:14And so you get this low period and then someone will go up and just

2:21:19tear that fucking place apart without 50 people.

2:21:21When I used to, I was so naive when I first started that we used

2:21:26to have open mics, right?

2:21:28And the open mic list would be like 25 people, right?

2:21:31And they fucking, the guy that was running, they hated me so much because I

2:21:36used to talk shit in the audience and everything.

2:21:37And they would keep bumping me down, right?

2:21:40And my dumb ass never got mad, right?

2:21:43I was like this, yeah, they want me to headline, right?

2:21:4625 comedians. I took that, I was like, yes, I didn't think about audience fatigue

2:21:51or anything. Oh, boy. I just was like, yeah.

2:21:54And it would be, but I'm telling you, I think that was one of the

2:21:58things that made me strong.

2:22:00100%. I was like, I'm going to do what the next person, there's one story,

2:22:07this is one of, if you ask Dave Chappelle, one of the dopest sets he's

2:22:12ever seen, I just would happen to be a part of that.

2:22:15It was at the Hollywood Bowl years ago, about three years ago, right?

2:22:18You know, Jeff. Is that when he got attacked?

2:22:20No, no, that wasn't that.

2:22:21It was like the year before.

2:22:22Oh, okay. You know Jeff Wills Live Nation, right?

2:22:24Sure. So we're doing. Shout out to Jeff.

2:22:26Shout out to Jeff. We're doing a show, you know, Hollywood Bowls, 18 ,000 people,

2:22:32right? So show starts at 7 o 'clock, right?

2:22:35Jeff comes up to me.

2:22:36He was like, Donnie, I got some good news and bad news.

2:22:37He said, what? He said, we're going to start on time.

2:22:40It's only but 700 people out there, right?

2:22:42Now, you imagine what 700 people look like in front of an 18 ,000 place,

2:22:47right? He said, there's only 700 people out there.

2:23:06I go into the audience.

2:23:07I'm literally going to each person in the theater.

2:23:12And I'll get you a picture.

2:23:13You can answer this. I'm going to each person.

2:23:15Why didn't they wait for the people to show up and sit down?

2:23:18That's what I wanted to say.

2:23:19But they were just like, the show has to continue.

2:23:22I don't allow that. I never allow that.

2:23:25They've tried to do that before with me.

2:23:26And they say, we're going to have to pay more money if the show is

2:23:28going to be. Goes over, I go, then the show goes over, and we pay

2:23:30more money. Get the fuck out of here.

2:23:31But for me, it was a moment because any other comedian, not any other, most

2:23:36people are like this, oh, there wasn't nobody out there, so many excuses.

2:23:39I jumped off stage. I was like, no, I can't be up here looking like

2:23:43I'm about to be auctioned off.

2:23:45I go in the audience.

2:23:46I'm going to each joint, right, and I'm fucking killing 700 people in front of

2:23:5218 ,000. That's a great way to start a show.

2:23:54But listen, and I'm like this, and here's the fucked up thing about this.

2:23:58Nobody's going to know about it because your fucking phones are locked up, right?

2:24:02Yo, it was a moment.

2:24:06Dave, everybody from the Green Room came out, right, and Dave told me to this

2:24:10day, he said, if I was doing a class on stand -up comedy, he said,

2:24:15I would use this as an example of, like, owning up to it.

2:24:18And it was so crazy, man.

2:24:20It was like, and it was just, it was crazy.

2:24:25I remember another time I was working with, I think I was working with you.

2:24:29It was me, you, and Dave, and I think it was a time, we was

2:24:32doing an outdoor theater, and that was supposed to be a break.

2:24:38It was supposed to be me.

2:24:39It was supposed to be, I think, you, Tony, or whatever, or something.

2:24:42Then it was a break, and then it was going to be me and Dave.

2:24:46But it was still daytime, right?

2:24:50Where was this? I can't remember the place.

2:24:52It was still, Dave, Jeff, he came up to me.

2:24:54He was like, I was like, I already know.

2:24:56I'm going to have to go on there.

2:24:57And I literally had to perform until it started getting dark.

2:25:02Oh, I remember this show.

2:25:04And I was saying to myself, I was like, ain't no way.

2:25:06I was like this, ain't no way they give a Rogan.

2:25:09And it wasn't as shitty on, people just hadn't come yet.

2:25:11Right. I was like, I knew, I was going to even suggest, I was like,

2:25:15nah, we had these two halves, right?

2:25:17And it was, and that was another example of, okay, you got to do what

2:25:20you got to do. And I had to go up there.

2:25:21It wasn't the spot that I expected or whatever, but I was like this, you

2:25:25know, for the sake of the show.

2:25:26And I'm always like, what do we need to do to support this?

2:25:28And I had to, we had to bring it down.

2:25:30We had to buy some more time.

2:25:32And then by the time you got on stage, everybody was seated.

2:25:36It was dark. It was dark.

2:25:37That was outside of San Francisco.

2:25:39I can't remember exactly what I do remember that moment.

2:25:41That was California. That shit was fun.

2:25:43But I tell people all the time that I do slight mental, I was like,

2:25:46man, it's certain times where you got to do what the next person is not

2:25:51going to do. You can't bitch about shit.

2:25:54And at the end of the day, you got to be a fuck.

2:25:56I know when I used to do these shows with Dave, I used to fucking

2:25:59get the shittiest time. Like, well, we're at 30 % capacity.

2:26:04I'm like, man, half of these motherfuckers not even going to see me.

2:26:06But I looked at it like this.

2:26:08Well, the people that's going to see me, they're going to remember it, you know?

2:26:10And you just got to keep on going.

2:26:13That's a good attitude. Yep.

2:26:15Yeah. That's healthy. See, I feel like this...

2:26:57Remember when Family Battles, Urkel and then Stefan?

2:27:01It was two characters. They had, like, the geeky Urkel, and then his alter ego,

2:27:08whatever, he was just this cool -ass.

2:27:10He was the same person being as cool.

2:27:11Whatever happened to that dude?

2:27:12Urkel? Yeah. Oh, he's been around.

2:27:14What's that? He's selling weed.

2:27:16Is he? He was, and his weed is really good.

2:27:18He's got a weed? Urkel purple?

2:27:19Purple Urkel. It's the best.

2:27:21He got this joint, he wrote, and it's like some type of Italian noodle, the

2:27:24spiral noodle. He used that as a filter.

2:27:27But also, I spent a lot of time with him because he would come out

2:27:30to the cornfields or whatever, so I've been seeing him.

2:27:33He's got a talk show.

2:27:34Didn't he get jacked? Isn't he, like...

2:27:36Is that him? Julia White?

2:27:38Yeah. I don't know. I heard Urkel got in great shape.

2:27:41Yeah, but he's a good guy, man.

2:27:42But he's another one of those celebrities that I know that want to do comedy

2:27:46but don't have the heart to do it.

2:27:48Always. I was like, well, he said, no, no, no, don't do that.

2:27:50But he's a great guy.

2:27:52It's hard to start out already famous.

2:27:54That's one of the things that I really respected about Charlie.

2:27:56Charlie was already famous when he was starting comedy.

2:27:59Do you know who started Charlie?

2:28:01Who? Me. Did you? And this is how it happened.

2:28:04When we were doing the Chappelle show, and it's safe to say, like, nobody was

2:28:08really making money. You know in a contract, when you're in your contract, if your

2:28:12show just blows up, you got to stick to whatever you was getting for the

2:28:14contract. Right. So we weren't making a lot of money doing the show.

2:28:17But I was like this.

2:28:18We're too popular right now.

2:28:19And at that time, it was me and Charlie.

2:28:21It was Dave, me, and Charlie, like the biggest names on the show.

2:28:25So Mike Berkowitz, who's head of William & Morris right now, right, he was a

2:28:31young agent at the time, right?

2:28:32He was coming up. And I was like, I told Jason, my manager at the

2:28:35time, Jason Steinberg, I said, man, we got to do a tour or something.

2:28:38I was like, yo, everybody's talking about I'm Rich Bitch.

2:28:40I was like, let's do I'm Rich Bitch tour, right?

2:28:43He was like, it's a good idea.

2:28:44I said, me and Charlie can do it.

2:28:46At the time, that was only a two -man show.

2:28:49Charlie didn't have no time or anything.

2:28:52And I was like, you know what, I want to do it.

2:28:54Because it was my idea.

2:28:55I said, I want to do me, Charlie.

2:28:57I said, we need another comedian.

2:28:58At the time, Bill Burr was not making a lot of money doing stand -up.

2:29:02And I'm not disrespecting him, but everybody knew he was going to blow.

2:29:05But that was early on in the career.

2:29:07And all Bill had to do was have a situation like he had in Philly.

2:29:10Everybody knew he was going to blow.

2:29:12So I said, why don't we do a tour, me, Charlie, and Bill Burr.

2:29:16That shit would be hot.

2:29:17Charlie had never did stand -up.

2:29:19And I used to, he used to always crack jokes and shit.

2:29:21I was like, yeah, you talk a lot of shit.

2:29:22But once that microphone, you're a bitch -ass motherfucker.

2:29:26So Charlie was a guy like, don't threaten him with anything, right?

2:29:29So this is when they had the Laugh Factory in New York, Times Square, right?

2:29:34One of my friends was doing a show there.

2:29:35I was like, Charlie, yo, we're going to do this tour.

2:29:37You got to at least have 10 minutes.

2:29:39He could have, at that time, Charlie was so hot.

2:29:42People would have just. Yelled out Charlie Murphy for five minutes.

2:29:46He was the emcee. We just needed his face to be there and this was

2:29:50it would be Charlie, Charlie, Bill Burr and myself and Charlie had no jokes right

2:29:57and like you said I was like maybe I don't know if you guys understand

2:30:00how it is to be selling out as an open miker crazy and he had

2:30:05to get his voice and I know and I was like why did he never

2:30:07do this but I'm part of it was because he probably never want to be

2:30:11compared to his brother right he never wanted to be able to like uh that's

2:30:15his brother and he had his own style or whatever so we did this fucking

2:30:19tour for like like a year and then I saw him start to grow sometimes

2:30:24he took some hits but he became Charlie Murphy he became like I'm not my

2:30:31brother I'm a storyteller he's stuck to that shit and the one of the things

2:30:35that I would say that I really appreciate about what uh the Chappelle show gave

2:30:40to Charlie Murphy when Charlie Murphy passed away Joe nobody said Eddie Murphy's brother died

2:30:46right they said Charlie Murphy passed away so that show didn't do and when I

2:30:51tell you one of the most stand -up original guys all of those stories like

2:30:56was it true it was he told that was just part of the story me

2:31:01Dave me Charlie and Bill built a relationship we did something that was spectacular then

2:31:07but uh Bill Burr used to fuck with us and I'm gonna tell you one

2:31:13of the things he would do we would be on the road and we all

2:31:16we used to do was argue and fight and just fuck with each other one

2:31:18time and Bill Burr he did some fucking I don't want to call this racist

2:31:22or whatever but whatever it was very Bostonian okay I won't say but what he

2:31:28did I didn't know two years later Bill Burr when we meet up he would

2:31:32buy a fucking like 12 piece of Popeye's chicken right and he knew me and

2:31:38Charlie would devour that chicken and we would be in a sleep coma right the

2:31:42next 15 minutes and it was almost like he gave us sleeping pills and shit

2:31:45he would get us a chicken we'd be knocked out and then he'd just go

2:31:48and just laugh at us and shit but that time that was such a great

2:31:52time because you saw people's careers being born like Bill was already on the trajectory

2:31:58to be great you know I'm saying but at that time and this is when

2:32:02I say the stories that you remember I'm pretty sure Bill still remembers like this

2:32:07was the first time that he was making like regular good money every week you

2:32:13know how it is for be a fucking headliner that's doing $800 a weekend or

2:32:18they give you a deal $2 ,000 and then you get a $500 bonus when

2:32:23you sell or give away 300 tickets and you're not working every weekend and you're

2:32:27not working every weekend and then you got club owners like the bonus supposed to

2:32:30be at 300 and they'd be like couldn't give me that bonus you was at

2:32:34298 you know I'd be like motherfucker I could have bought those they lied to

2:32:39it they lie about how many tickets you sold they lied to and then they

2:32:42wonder why when guys become big and everything they don't want to come back because

2:32:46I remember that oh I remember that there's a couple club owners that they can

2:32:49go eat shit and I tell people all the time when everybody talk about this

2:32:53I was like yo try this try doing a fucking tour for a year and

2:32:58a half and every night you had to come behind Bill Burr I had no

2:33:04days off and I knew when I had a day off it wasn't I wasn't

2:33:08hitting on all cylinders because that's when they had used to have comment cards right

2:33:12the comment cards like I don't know why the white boy didn't go last but

2:33:19that always that just that's that always kept me in shape you know what I'm

2:33:24saying it's like this you don't got no time to play around because Bill and

2:33:28because Bill was one of those comics Bill was like Bill would come Bill did

2:33:33the mainstream shit and he was one of the only white dudes who would do

2:33:36the fucking most grimiest spots ever and I'm pretty sure he's always going to be

2:33:41a great comic but I think that that helped build his character like I think

2:33:45that was probably what made him be in a position where he go to Philly

2:33:49like yo fuck y 'all I just did Donnell's fucking hood club in Brooklyn right

2:33:54if I can handle that I can handle that well that rant in Philly was

2:33:57because he was doing the Opie and Anthony tour so when Opie and Anthony their

2:34:00crowd were brutal yeah their crowds were fucking brutal they was kill Tony's before kill

2:34:05Tony's way worse yeah way worse that they had sort of fed into that crowd

2:34:11they they fostered that crowd they called them the pests but then even going back

2:34:17to what I was saying in this career sometimes you have situations to have a

2:34:21defining moment and that was one of those things I'm pretty sure everybody went on

2:34:25before Bill was throwing a towel and he was like fuck that but yeah well

2:34:29what happened was Dom Herrera went on and you know Dom Herrera is a legend

2:34:33how's he doing man he's hurting yeah he's got his he's hurting he's got whatever

2:34:38that neurological condition is it's not good right I mean I don't want to speak

2:34:42out of turn about his uh his health but it's not good um but Dom

2:34:48they they booed Dom they were just rough they wanted you to fail and Bill

2:34:54went up and go fuck you you know and he just went into this crazy

2:34:58you know who else had a moment like that who Bernie Mac did he oh

2:35:02on Def Jam yeah I ain't afraid of you motherfuckers yeah you know how it

2:35:05was you know how that was born why first off Martin Lawrence was the host

2:35:10and that night everybody was taking licks right and there was another it was a

2:35:15comment from DC named Butch Burns right he was very popular in DC Butch Burns

2:35:20went on stage and bombed so bad motherfuckers throwing shit there was nothing that Martin

2:35:26could do you know how sometimes you try and you like just whoop you're on

2:35:30your own right it's like whoop -de -doo right so Butch Burns had bombed the

2:35:35room was going crazy Martin could do anything next on deck was fucking uh Bernie

2:35:40Mac Bernie Mac saw uh Butch Burns on the way out and he told him

2:35:44he was like listen man hold your head up man he said the sun might

2:35:47not shine on your day but it's good you'll have another opportunity to shine and

2:35:51the reason he didn't plan on I ain't scared of you motherfuckers and then um

2:35:57Bernie has Situations go through because Bernie was on Def Jam before he dressed in

2:36:01a suit and everything. He was looking like a Chicago player, but he didn't think

2:36:05that he connected with a young audience like that So you even watch the way

2:36:08he was dressed from the previous show to the next one.

2:36:10Yeah The next one he had more of a hip outfit had graffiti on the

2:36:14jeans. He was right He was dressed up for that part of it.

2:36:17No idea. I ain't scared of you motherfuckers He did have the energy that he

2:36:21was gonna do the connection was gonna have with the DJ, right?

2:36:24But what made it so explosive is that he said fuck y 'all Yeah, he

2:36:29said he did his joke it didn't that's why you hear like I why was

2:36:33he saying I ain't scared of you motherfuckers, right?

2:36:35It was because of the other shit.

2:36:36Yeah, he said I ain't scared of you motherfuckers Get boom boom boom, but he

2:36:40say what he say he did and it was such the most simple stock jokes

2:36:45But it was so powerful so powerful so power the rhythm that he had and

2:36:51the fact that you knew that something was Special what happened.

2:36:54That's why that fucking audience Looked was so fucking charged up because he said fuck

2:37:01y 'all. I saw Bernie live once at the comedy connection in Faneuil Hall in

2:37:04Boston I remember that club.

2:37:07He was on fire. I saw so powerful first time.

2:37:10I saw him at Comedy connection the green belt I used to do this club

2:37:14and it was a couple of people just come through and I was like these

2:37:16motherfuckers on the next level It was him.

2:37:19Another person was like that was George Wallace Oh, yeah, you know another person was

2:37:23like that rich boss. Oh, yeah, yo George Wallace I first off I do George

2:37:28Wallace on the next level I've never seen anybody go to the comedy club and

2:37:31the deal he had was hundred percent of the door Everything you just get your

2:37:36drinks your chicken wings hundred percent door.

2:37:38They had to give it to him Um, and and George Wallace he was oh

2:37:42George Wallace always been an older dude, right?

2:37:45Somebody said you know his thing is your mama jokes, right?

2:37:48Somebody had did a mama joke and motherfucking George Wallace ripped off about 30 mama

2:37:53jokes I felt so bad for and then rich boss fucking rich boss Fucked me

2:37:59up because I'd never seen a white comedian perform in this club.

2:38:02It was a black club Rich boss came in here.

2:38:05He had a ponytail similar to Jamie's, right?

2:38:07He had jerry curls No, rich boss had a ponytail.

2:38:10It's the same one that Jamie was wearing when I write It was rich bosses,

2:38:15right? And I saw rich boss go up there and destroy this crowd I was

2:38:19like this white dude don't know what's going on and he fucking killed that shit

2:38:24I I had you know when we talk about joke stealing, right?

2:38:28I've never I stole one joke in my life and I apologize to rich boss.

2:38:33I was doing a show And none of my jokes worked I tried yo, I

2:38:39tried everything I tried everything and I said to myself What joke have you heard?

2:38:45I didn't mean to steal right?

2:38:47I borrowed it, okay? I said what one joke, you know that fuck will kill

2:38:52this audience and rich boss used to have this joke He said you know what

2:38:56they say once you go black you never go back He said yeah because your

2:39:00father won't let you back in the house, right?

2:39:02I stole that joke I got him laughing.

2:39:05I got him back on track And then I had to call a voice.

2:39:07I said man. I'm so sorry I said it's gonna get back to you, but

2:39:13I stole the joke He was like no no problem with it.

2:39:16Well at least you admitted it.
