2:35What do Dusty May, Kurt Cignetti, and Kale Sanderson all have in common?

2:41They're all true coaches. Today, I break down what that means, and more importantly, what

2:48it means for the athletes in modern athletics.

3:04What's up, everybody? Welcome back to the show.

3:06I'm super fired up to have this one.

3:09Everybody who's ever played a sport at any level knows absolutely hands down the most

3:15important thing is how good is your coach.

3:19And as a person that's played Division I athletics, I played Penn State lacrosse, I

3:26played football my whole life, I played basketball, I played baseball, I played soccer, you

3:33name it, I played it as a kid.

3:36As well as I've worked with a ton of D1 sports teams and professional teams.

3:46Last two years, I've worked with the Penn State Athletic Department.

3:49Last year, with the Penn State Men's Hockey Team.

3:52I've worked with the Penn State Men's Lacrosse Team a bunch over the last seven

3:56years. I've worked with the UPenn football team.

4:01I've worked with the Oregon State Beavers baseball team when they won a Collegiate World

4:06Series championship. I've worked with professional teams like the Green Bay Packers.

4:12I've worked with the Carolina Panthers and I won a World Series while working in

4:20support of the Boston Red Sox in 2018.

4:22So I've seen great coaching and I've seen horrible coaching.

4:27Not only that, my oldest daughter who just committed to Penn State Harrisburg soccer played

4:37travel soccer for the last eight years and I watched just a continuous slew of

4:44horrific coaching and I watch it at every level almost in high school.

4:48That's the key of whether or not you're going to have a successful program.

4:53Do you have a true coach?

4:56Now, when I talk about true coach, what do I mean?

4:59Well, I believe a true coach has some basic fundamentals which make makes them a

5:08true coach and I'll get into that in a minute.

5:10But, you know, why am I digging into this today?

5:13Well, last, you know, on this past Monday was the national championship basketball game and

5:23we were able to watch go to next week.

5:25Thank you. Dusty May, the head coach of Michigan, in really only a second year

5:31there, win a national championship.

5:34Not only win it, but dominate the entire March Madness bracket, right?

5:42Many cases before the last game, winning by almost an average of 20 points the

5:48four previous games. Now, that's a staggering level of performance for these college kids.

5:56Now, if you don't know the Dusty May story, it's fascinating because prior to University

6:03of Michigan, he was at our teeny little college here where I live in Boca

6:06Raton, Florida, called FAU, Florida Atlantic University, where he had a miracle season and took

6:14his team to the final four of the entire Division I bracket.

6:20And that is no small feat.

6:23In fact, it's one of the most difficult feats that exists in all of college

6:27sports to be able to do that.

6:30Now, you know, tangentially to this, I also just remember watching Kurt Cignetti at the

6:36University of Indiana go in an undefeated season and win the NCAA Division I men's

6:43college football tournament and bowl game, you know, not bowl game, but the championship game

6:49there. And again, University of Indiana, not a powerhouse in the Big Ten, not even

6:55a powerhouse in Division I football, but he goes in, has a perfect season and

7:00wins that. Why? He's a true coach.

7:03And Cale Sanderson, the Penn State men's wrestling coach in his 13th national championship.

7:09I don't even know consecutively what it was.

7:12But what do all these coaches represent?

7:16They represent the ideal person that you want coaching you, right?

7:24That your coach or coaching your kid in college or whatever that looks like.

7:28They all seem to have these common traits about them.

7:33And in the modern game, obviously, we know with NIL, we know with agents, we

7:42know with the way recruiting practices work, the transfer portal.

7:50We know with kind of some of the other money that floats around out there.

7:56We've seen just some tremendous changes, even in the last six or seven years with

8:04all of what's taking place.

8:05I think COVID was really kind of the year that broke college, Division I college

8:10apart in ways that we used to know it.

8:13Now, what are some of the pros of this?

8:15And I believe in a lot of these pros, right?

8:17There's fair compensation for athletes, right?

8:21Now, where let's say a place like Michigan, the famous Fab Five back in the

8:28day would make millions and millions of dollars, not only on these kids' name, engine,

8:33and likenesses, their jerseys, all the different sports apparel and sneakers and all these deals

8:40that the school was just having the windfall.

8:44These young kids, man, they couldn't even – they didn't have cars to drive.

8:48They couldn't live off campus.

8:52They didn't have extra money.

8:53I mean, meanwhile, the school's raking in millions.

8:56And that's been the case for many, many, many, many, many years.

8:59And that's why it was always interest to me how certain schools would get away

9:03with it and other schools would not get away with it.

9:06And again, I think that's an example of how truly dysfunctional the NCAA has been

9:13over long stretches of time.

9:15You know, the other aspects is, you know, greater athlete agency and mobility, right?

9:23You have – you can get recruited, come in, and if you don't, aren't –

9:28you know, you're not getting the right playing time.

9:30The college lied to you.

9:32And trust me, a lot of top recruits get lied.

9:35When I was working with University of Nebraska football team a few years ago, there

9:40was a young man who transferred over from Georgia, and he told me his whole

9:44recruiting thing on what they did and laying out the red carpet and the pressure

9:48they put on him and his family to get him in there.

9:51And then basically he sat, didn't even get a shot, and ultimately, you know, the

9:57day before they were playing in a national championship game, his position coach came in

10:02and said, you need to join the portal because you're essentially never going to play

10:06here. So that's the way kids are treated at these institutions as well too.

10:10So, you know, that greater athlete agency and mobility, their ability to not only, you

10:17know, combine that NIL with their ability to leave and go someplace that wants them.

10:21Hell, we look at Dusty May, and he had the young man, number 23, who

10:26got injured the last few games, but he had gone through, you know, the portal

10:30a couple times. He came from three years at JUCO, transferred and then transferred, and

10:34again, finally finding his home with Coach May at the University of Michigan, right?

10:40The other is an idea of improved talent retention and product quality, right?

10:48Stars can stay at the college longer, earning the same money.

10:52you know, that some people in professional can earn, right?

10:57Because remember, the number of students playing Division I is really minuscule.

11:05It's like, in many cases, less than 1 % or right about 1 % or

11:082 % of total high school athletes playing in that talent pool, right?

11:15And for, you know, yeah, D1 football, you might have a roster of 65 or

11:20whatever it is or 90 or I forget what the new numbers are, down to

11:26where your basketball roster, which is very small, or your golf roster or, you know,

11:32lacrosse rosters or soccer rosters, right?

11:35That are all, you know, much smaller than those bigger ones.

11:39So being able to get on a team, stay there and succeed is there.

11:43Um, uh, financial professional development, uh, opportunities, right?

11:49Uh, branding, you can get branding deals.

11:51I remember I saw, uh, during the March madness of those two players from Duke,

11:56the, the, uh, the brothers, you know, doing insurance ads or tax ads.

12:01I saw one of the Yukon kids had a tax ad that he did during,

12:05uh, halftime. So, you know, these kids are able to cash in on their talents,

12:09earn some money that they might not otherwise, uh, be able to leverage when they

12:14get to the pros. Cause, uh, remember you've coming at it, even at D1 level,

12:19getting the pros even smaller than it was getting into college and more difficult.

12:23Um, you know, there's some broader, uh, uh, benefits to these programs, right?

12:29There's more efficiency at rebuilding programs.

12:32Um, um, you know, and you've seen, uh, schools like Indiana and Michigan really benefit

12:39from that, being able to rebuild programs quickly when these better coaches come in.

16:54What are some of the cons, right?

16:56They have roster instability, which I hear is the number one thing, right?

17:00There's huge transfer rates. Thousands enter the portal annually, and football alone create a constant

17:08change, which always impacts the team dynamics, right?

17:13The chemistry, right? If some kid believes he's better than he is and he's not

17:18getting playing time, he just leaves and goes to another and leaves and goes to

17:21another. I remember hearing some stories in football.

17:23There were kids that had been at four schools in four years.

17:27Now, if I'm a coach and I'm looking at that, man, that's not the kid

17:30that I want on my team, right?

17:34You know, if you have the revolving door, it's going to have a negative impact.

17:39Widening competitive and financial inequality, right?

17:43In the wealthy power conference schools, right?

17:46You have, you know, a ton of money going in there.

17:50$20 million or so baseline, and then you can get these other deals from whatever.

17:55But I'm telling you what, the third string guard, right, in football or, you know,

18:02the fourth string long pole defensive men on your lacrosse team, you know, they're not

18:09getting paid and they're not getting endorsement deals.

18:12And kind of that causes another problem internally.

18:17Obviously, academic disruption, you know, frequent transfers can often result in the loss of credit,

18:25school credits, which delays graduations, has an impact or a reduction of focus on education,

18:31which ultimately, right, most of the kids that are going to play D1 sports are

18:37not going to the pros, are not going to have become superstars, are not going

18:41to be making millions. And so education is at the essence of why you're going

18:46to college in the first place.

18:47And yeah, you can play D1 and have a great career and be able to,

18:50you know, take that experience with you and leverage it in whatever way you can

18:54leverage it down in the future.

18:57Hell, man, I wasn't particularly great in school.

19:01I didn't see the field barely at all.

19:03But the experience alone has given me a core understanding of performance and what it

19:11means to participate at that level and what it takes to succeed and to thrive,

19:15which I wasn't able to do.

19:17You know, thankfully, my time in the teams taught me more.

19:20And as I've gotten older, really understanding performance from my own experiences and mostly research

19:26and working with athletes at all these different levels from high school to college to

19:30pros. You know, there's, you know, I think there's a whole level of the NIL

19:37stuff that has a really negative connotation.

19:40Understanding taxes. You know, I've heard some stories about kids getting sued for breach of

19:46contact, right? Imagine you've got a big donor who really comes out of the pocket

19:51to get this kid in and the kid just essentially shows up, doesn't integrate well,

19:55and then bolts after that.

19:57And the donor's like, what the hell?

19:59How did I just spend $500 ,000 on this kid and he's gone, you know,

20:03before the season's even out?

20:05And what's that going to do to your donor pool as well that you can't

20:09get control or can't keep that kid happy with where he's at?

20:15You know, and then finally, this is the more subjective one.

20:18It's that erosion of tradition or the amateur spirit, right?

20:22The school loyalty, your pride for playing at your school, right?

20:27These organic rivalries between big conference teams, the Ohio State, Michigan, right?

20:33The Oregon, whomever, right? Whatever it is, these big, well, those kind of lose it

20:38because kids are just kind of navigating their way to a paycheck and to starting

20:43so they can leverage that and to get paid, essentially.

20:47You know, and essentially it turns your, many of your college athlete into semi -pros.

20:53And what that means for them psychologically, because I've actually done work with certain pro

21:00teams, like how do you prepare the kid for if he doesn't succeed at that

21:05high level and then he only has a short career, right?

21:08Most people, you know, don't realize just how short careers can be through injury, through

21:15just not rising to the occasion and making the next level jump in terms of

21:20your abilities, right? And then the pressures of just what it means to have to

21:26perform at that level. I mean, walking into the University of Michigan's arena or walking

21:32into, you know, their stadium or wherever it might be and you've got 100 ,000

21:37people booing you because you have a bad game.

21:41That's a tremendous amount of pressure on an 18 to 22 -year -old kid, right?

21:46So all of these things.

21:48play a role. And, you know, what I think the reality is we have to

21:53start thinking about is the role that the coach plays and what that coach means.

21:59Now, I remember growing up in the day where you had, you know, the Don

22:04Shulas, the Bear Bryants, the Bo Schembecklers, the, you know, the Krzyzewskis, the Bobby Knights,

22:18the, you know, all these storied old school coaches who were able to really, you

22:25know, take these young kids.

22:27John Wooden, probably one of my favorite coaches of all time, right?

22:32And that pyramid of performance that he came up with, which is a great understanding

22:38of some of what I'm going to talk about in terms of that true coach.

22:42Um, and so one of the things that it's really critical and, uh, for, for,

22:47uh, you know, players and coaches to think about is, are what is, what are,

22:53what are my personal responsibilities?

22:55And if I'm a kid, what I want to look for is I want to

22:58look for that true coach, the coach who has kind of, um, the, the, the

23:07understanding, right? Remember, and also you think about this, right?

23:11Being a coach in the modern era, man, it's almost like you're running a, um,

23:16a major multimillion dollar business, right?

23:19And, and it's not like, you know, uh, you're, you're, you're doing with seasoned professionals.

23:25You're working with kids. You're working with kids that have come from different backgrounds, socioeconomic

23:32backgrounds, different, uh, moral backgrounds, different upbringings, different, uh, focuses, different, whatever.

23:39And you're having them integrate into this intensely rigorous schedule.

23:44You've got to figure most D one athletic programs, that's a 30 to 40 hour

23:49week in addition to your scholastic requirements as well too.

23:52So, you know, maintaining, uh, the understanding plus the coach has to deal with the

23:57athletic department and the ADs has to deal with, uh, the press constantly, what they're

24:03doing, how they're hammering their kids.

24:05I mean, we saw that the head coach of the UConn women's team really go

24:10off on the NCAA and the amount of pressure they were putting on these young

24:13girls in terms of meeting media requirements and outside practices where media can be there,

24:19right? All of this plays a role in those pressures on what it means to

24:23be a true coach. So, you know, I think one of the things that coaches

24:31are most specifically responsible for, right, is first and foremost is the ability, uh, to

24:40develop the individual kid and not just develop that kid as an athlete, but to

24:46develop them as a human being, to develop them as a person that can take

24:51this unbelievably, uh, this great gift of college athletics and par that parlay that into,

24:59uh, a confidence, right. And ability to embrace their fear where they can then take

25:05that experience, leverage it and go pursue something that's meaningful, right.

25:11That has genuine purpose in their life.

25:13And that is, uh, you know, they can continue to integrate in all different kinds

25:18of teams, whatever profession they choose or, uh, you know, whatever person, you know, uh,

25:24sense of meaning they pursue in their lives, uh, whether they get into stay in

25:29athletics or they get into entrepreneurialism or they get into teaching or whatever career they

25:35pursue, right. That's the fundamental responsibility for a coach.

25:40And so anytime I work with coaches, that's one of the first places I start

25:44with. I want to understand what your coaching philosophy is behind the development of the

25:51human being. And I, I definitely now knowing that, uh, Chloe's going to commit to,

25:58uh, going and playing up here, my oldest kid.

26:01And I'm going to be like, you know, coach, you know, what are you going

26:04to, you know, I just want to understand what's your mission for my daughter and

26:08her development, not only as a player, but more importantly, as a human being to

26:13take this experience and leverage it in her life.

26:15Right. So that core coaching philosophy is critical.

26:19Now I, I, I know for a fact that, uh, many, many coaches don't even

26:24have a coaching philosophy, right?

26:27They might have some type of training regimen and kind of an approach to games

26:31maybe, but really the core philosophy of why they're coaching and what they want to

26:36achieve within the human being that they have under their care and responsibility.

26:40That's first and foremost. Um, the other is, is how coaches assemble, right?

26:47How they recruit, how they take these unique driven young people, and they bring them

26:54together under the construct of this core mission, which is, should be to yes, absolutely

27:00win. That should be at the forefront of why anybody competes in the first place.

27:05If you don't want to win, then, then, you know, you should go do it,

27:09you know, off to the side and some rec league or whatever it is.

27:13But one of the most, I would say.

27:1595 % of all athletes that I've ever been around or worked with or myself,

27:21the fundamental reason why you do is for the competition.

27:25And the root of the competition is to succeed, which is to win, which is

27:29then to drive forward this collective mission of performance, right?

27:35Where everybody recognizes that your individual drive and commitment and performance is relative to the

27:43person who's on the right and left you, even if you're playing an individual sport,

27:46even if you're wrestling, right?

27:48The culture of Cale Sanderson's Penn State men's team is the essence of what makes

27:56them so fundamentally good, right?

27:58And how they do that every day in practice and out of season and how

28:04they recruit people for their team.

28:07And I find it really interesting that they had one transfer in this year, a

28:12kid from Oklahoma, but otherwise Cale really specifically focuses on recruiting out of high school,

28:19bringing them in the red shirt concept, and then developing these kids as performers in

28:25their weight class, but in an overall structure of what Penn State wrestling is trying

28:30to teach these kids to become champions.

28:33And in my opinion, nobody's ever done it as good as Cale.

28:37I think it's probably the most elite college Division I sports program I've ever seen

28:43in my entire life. Now, there have been great programs in the past and to

28:48keep those going is often challenging, but again, it comes back to these core ideas

28:53of what it means to be a true coach, right?

28:55That coaching philosophy, recruiting the right kids, the development of those kids, and really getting

29:03them focused on that common mission, right?

29:07Now, you know, one of the things that I think is must be difficult as

29:13you're out there assessing the landscape of great high school players or transfer porter players

29:19is you look at their natural athletic talent.

29:23Obviously, right, that is a key indicator of what that kid's going to be able

29:29to produce when they're on the field, the court, or on the mats, wherever it

29:32might be. And so you look at those baseline fundamentals of talent, how fast they

29:37are, how much energy can they generate, how strong they are, how fast they can

29:42recover, their work ethic, right?

29:44Their idea of fundamental skills, how competent they are in those fundamentals, how they integrate

29:49in, you know, their field IQ, if you will.

29:53All these things are evaluating traits.

29:56And I'll never forget my good friend, Mike Rickard, who is the head of scouting

30:01at the Red Sox. You know, they used to have a very specific scout, what

30:06they look for, these six things.

30:08But Mike always talked about the X factor too.

30:11And that X factor is, in my opinion, the core of it, what a true

30:15coach looks for. The X factor is that social integration, right?

30:19The ability for that kid, no matter how good they are on that status poll,

30:25right? Can they integrate into the overall population of what that team is?

30:32Because the team dynamics are what make it.

30:34I remember, you know, just watching another guy that I had a short amount of

30:41time working with a few years ago at Carolina, and that's Sam Donaldson, who ended

30:46up winning the Super Bowl for Seattle this year.

30:51And, you know, one of the things he's commented on when he was being interviewed

30:56was just how committed the team was.

31:00It was the guys in the locker room, the coach's commitment to the guys, and

31:05really their commitment. And, you know, his praise of the defense was also immaculate, you

31:10know, the other side of the ball from him and, and what the impact they

31:13had, right? And so it's that selflessness of the player to rec, to recognize it's

31:19always a team approach to comprehensive victory.

31:24Now, as you look at all those things, right, you look about these fundamentals, I

31:29evaluate players from a different performance, right?

31:31I'm not going to go in there and coach a kid had a hit a

31:35soccer ball better, or coach a kid had a shoot a lacrosse ball, or coach

31:38a kid had a throw a football, you know, that's way outside.

31:42Plus, modern training techniques are so advanced and so good and so awesome that, you

31:49know, I'm just out of my league.

31:50But what I do understand, right, is I understand that that mental, emotional, spiritual intersection,

31:57right? What you're trying to accomplish with these kids, right?

32:00And so fundamentals for me are always integrated around two main components, and that's fear,

32:07right? When you're a young kid, you're showing up to, let's call it Indiana, this,

32:12this spring ball or in the fall or, you know, leading into the fall ball.

32:16Imagine the fear you have of stepping onto a national championship team, where the expectations

32:22now are, you know, to get there again, because you've done it, you've gotten there,

32:27and, or at least to get back to the playoffs and perform well and have

32:30a winning season. Like, that's the expectation.

32:33And so it's inevitable that you're going to put a heightened pressure upon yourself, which

32:39generates fear, right? And fear is healthy, fear is good.

32:42And again, There's no such thing as fearlessness.

32:45Everybody has fear. I don't care whatever level you're at.

32:49Even the, you know, McDonald's first team or not at McDonald's, but Nike first team

32:54all -star basketball kid is going to have fear, right?

32:58You know, and that's why what drives them.

33:00And, you know, one of the most impressive young people I've ever seen manage that

33:04fear. And then the other component is self -confidence.

33:07I'll talk about that is Cooper Flagg last year at Duke, right?

33:10And then coming from Duke and going to the Dallas Mavericks, and he's already had

33:14multiple 50 -point games as a 19 -year -old kid in the NBA, which, again,

33:19he's a super freak, right?

33:20So he's the outer edge of performance.

33:22But most normal kids, right, you know, the greater body of the bell curve, they're

33:28going to have fear. So as a coach, it's your responsibility to help teach these

33:32kids how to embrace those things, right?

33:36And they're going to be afraid of not playing.

33:39They're going to be afraid of making mistakes.

33:40They're going to be afraid of not integrating, not being accepted by the team, not

33:44being able to keep up with their schoolwork, all these very common natural fears.

33:48And so, you know, addressing those commonalities across your team is an essential to give

33:54them the support structure to make sure you can mitigate those fears, reduce them, or

33:59just say, hey, listen, it's cool to be afraid.

34:02But listen, you need to step into the options that we provide you to help

34:06mitigate or lessen the amount of fear you're dealing with every day.

34:09And most great programs out there, they have mental skills coaches, they have psychologists on

34:15staff, right? All these people to help and support these kids with the pressure that

34:19they're dealing with. Now, the other aspect is self -confidence, right?

34:23And that's really key when it comes to athletic performance, right?

34:28Self -confidence is, in my opinion, is pretty basic, right?

34:32The biggest indicator of self -confident kids are the kids that are having fun, the

34:37kids that love to put the work in, the kids that are grinding, the kids

34:40that are doing the work when nobody's listening, right?

34:43The off practices, what they're hitting the weight room, the stretching, they're managing their diets.

34:48They're not getting hammered all the time, right?

34:50They're enjoying themselves, but they're really committed to this experience of playing at that D1

34:56or D3 level, whatever level it might be.

34:58And self -confidence is something that can get eradicated or knocked down every single day,

35:04right? You come in and have a bad practice, boom, your self -confidence is destroyed.

35:09You're back down to zero.

35:10You go into the game, you call a bad timeout, you miss a critical shot,

35:15you get a foul called on you that costs you the game.

35:18All of that is a reality of performance.

35:20Your failures are going to be a huge part of that.

35:24And so when people fail, their self -confidence gets knocked down.

35:27Great coaches are testing that day in and day out, right?

35:32They're imposing failure in those practice sessions because they're knocking these kids down.

35:38But then what they're doing is they're not destroying them when they're down.

35:41They're not putting their boot on their necks and humiliating them emotionally, spiritually and mentally.

35:47They're picking them back up, coaching them specific on fundamentals, what they did wrong.

35:52And then they're giving them an opportunity to get back in and correct the mistake

35:55they did, right? And they keep doing that over and over and over.

35:59That's what true coaches do.

36:01They're constantly forcing that self -confidence to be checked.

36:05So then the kid can come back and rehabilitate with their assistance through better fundamental

36:10performance in team integration, right?

36:13Self -confidence is a key thing.

38:55kids is the comparative analysis of others right you're always seeing kids compare themselves now

39:02don't get me wrong i i truly believe the old chip on a shoulder oh

39:06if that kid's good i'm gonna go beat him i'm gonna outscore him i'm gonna

39:09go i'm gonna go perform better that's the driver i i know that works i've

39:14used it myself in the past and it is a useful tool to rehabilitate self

39:19-confidence but it also can have negative effects as well too a true coach will

39:23see that try and mitigate that and say listen stop comparing yourself to other people

39:29be your own player be your own player in relationship to the players that are

39:35around you because their performance can enhance your performance and so if you're conscientious of

39:41their fragility the fragility of their self -confidence and are constantly supporting them not babying

39:47or or wrongfully self -grandizing other people but really hitting them with truth and with

39:54fundamental support and lifting people up when they're down man that's the essence of strong

39:59bonds on a team right if one guy suffers everyone should suffer in some capacity

40:04not as much as the individual but certainly the recognition that hey this player plays

40:09a critical aspect of our team is struggling let's support him and build him back

40:14not in a pollyantic way but in a maybe tough love way or whatever it

40:18might be whatever the culture of the team is so that's huge now once you

40:23adapt to those fundamentals of really helping kids uh deal with fear right embrace their

40:28fears and the natural transitions they're going through and the growth as as players and

40:33performers and then also being able to have a real distinct program to rehabilitate self

40:39-confidence after they get knocked down now the advanced concepts in this are fundamentally this

40:44right you want to have a kid that's really focused on team orientation right and

40:50we saw that right i remember listening to those young men after indiana when they

40:55won or listening to michigan or you listening to those kids at at penn state

41:00you listen to the ucla women's head coach who just won you listen to some

41:05of these other uh teams that have won national championships hockey teams uh fencing teams

41:11track and field right the great praise comes from the acknowledgement that hey we all

41:17operate as a team and don't get me wrong i know a lot of these

41:21are sound bites for the cameras they're you know the old bull durham for you

41:25older folks where he's teaching uh larouche uh how to not be dumb when you're

41:30getting interviewed by excuse me when you're getting interviewed by uh uh the media right

41:37to say something that's clever and works but i really what i see is this

41:41really unique aspect in in athletics out there right now which is this team orientation

41:48to give props where props are due the recognition you don't get there on your

41:53own because those kids who think that way they're always going to be a cancer

41:57on your team and that's really what you don't want unless you're a true coach

42:01which i believe can take that superstar that individual break them down and have them

42:06integrate into the team culture because team orientation is everything right and what i believe

42:12team orientation focuses on is is the kid committed to the team and to the

42:16teammates to the program right not just committed to them seeing playing time but committed

42:22to the program itself committed to the the the way the coaching staff aggregates the

42:29the flow the development of the individual development of the team right that's huge the

42:35other is their training mindset if a kid is fundamentally committed to training and doesn't

42:42skimp on reps and goes all in puts and follows the training procedure and buys

42:47into that program that's a kid who's really going to be integrated into the team

42:51orientation or the team life i call it right and then after that you have

42:56a great communicators teammates great teammates are great communicators they're always uh relaying information to

43:03each other they're keeping each other abreast of what's going on if you go to

43:08the kid and like hey man uh did you watch game films nah man i

43:12don't need to watch that i i got my game i'm good well that's not

43:16that's not what you want you want somebody who's willing to do the work to

43:20communicate back and forth coaches and for their uh the players they're playing with or

43:25competing with in and around their sport right and lastly you know leadership what i

43:30always think true coaches are looking to do is they're looking to take these young

43:34exceptional young athletes bring them in and then develop you them as true leaders for

43:40the team and if you see those kids moving into the willfully moving into those

43:45leadership roles whatever they might be you know a leadership role as a bench player

43:50readership role as a practice player leadership role as a starter right that's essential you

43:56have to have kids that want to take up that that that pressure take up

44:01that that that that rucksack of leadership and develop that alone so what does that

44:07take takes them to communicating and coming to their coach coach what do i need

44:10to learn how to do in order to be a great leader and and that

44:14leadership structure should fall within the coaching purview as well as coaching development as well

44:19as the culture of the team now i will tell you this many teams i've

44:23worked with do not have that leadership development program built in and what i believe

44:28true coaches do they think about that from the sort because it's your leaders of

44:33the team that are going to be able to correct many issues that the coaches

44:37don't necessarily need to get involved in that's why it's essential to have a great

44:41leadership development program internal as a coach you want these players to be able to

44:47govern themselves at a pretty high level right to to police up the effort to

44:52keep the kids everybody focused on the philosophical mandates presented by the true coach as

44:58well as the regiment of performance required for stepping on that court all right the

45:03last one right is uh this sense of purpose right to live with purpose on

45:09the team and that purpose is to play the sport at the highest level possible

45:13right to really explore what your capabilities are instead of allowing your emotions or that

45:20spiritual doubt that comes into play distract you from what you potentially could become because

45:26that negative insurgency is in your head so getting a true coach will really drill

45:31that down onto the in a realistic manner with each player each kid on their

45:36team right what's your purpose of being here what's your objective in your four or

45:41five years you're going to be playing right what's your objective in the next week

45:45of practice in the next hour what's your purpose today right and these are the

45:51questions that need to be presented something much more deep much more uh uh profound

45:56for these young kids get their brains thinking on that level because before you know

46:01it their career's over and they're never playing a sport again and that identity shift

46:06if they don't have genuine purpose about what their expectations what the intent of their

46:12their commitment to playing the sport is going to result when they're getting out or

46:16they're done playing if you don't have that built into that kid those kids can

46:20really suffer uh pretty substantially from one going from an athlete from four years old

46:26to a 22 years old your life is over and you have no idea what

46:29your identity is next and and i know that and vividly from multiple that time

46:34happened to be multiple different times so a true coach will integrate that genuine sense

46:39of purpose in the kid and help them discover that in real time all right

46:45now the last component of that purpose that you really have to ask yourself if

46:49you're uh the coach is right you know does my ask student athlete does my

46:55athlete understand what i want his impact to be daily both on the practice field

47:01as well as on the game field right that intention what impact do i need

47:06from you son or or what impact do i need you from female athlete hey

47:11listen i uh what's your intent every day as part of this team and then

47:15to hold them accountable for that intent the impact of their play of their commitment

47:20to the culture right the other is how are they influencing other teammates around them

47:25that's a big one what tools do they use if you're going to have leaders

47:29emerge on your team what tools is that kid because many times these kids have

47:34no idea if i every time i ask a young player hey uh what are

47:38the three top things you need to do to be a leader on the team

47:41everyone nails the first one my play will mandate whether or not people respect me

47:46so i lead on my own performance great that's fine and danny but when you're

47:50off the field and you're leaning in practice and someone's distracted someone's got shit going

47:55on in their personal lives they're not eating right they're drinking or whatever what are

47:59the tools you're going to use to influence that kid to bring them back so

48:02they don't lose sight of the profound opportunity they have to be a part of

48:06the program right what are your influential tools and the last one is to really

48:11begin to give these kids a contemplation of what do you want your legacy to

48:14be not just with the team itself the culture of the community and i saw

48:19this really phenomenal thing uh with the new head coach at penn state football campbell

48:24just brought back three players that i remember when i was there who were profound

48:28right key jonah carter who i'm friends with kyle brady uh um and and um

48:35the uh their tight end who came back um i'm sorry i'm forgetting his name

48:40right now but these guys were very powerful and it brought them back this past

48:44week to influence the younger players to talk about the tradition and the heritage of

48:48the the legacy that they hope keeps going on at at penn state football so

48:53get these young kids to start thinking about that legacy that they're going to have

48:57not just during you know once they're first done but as down in the future

49:01right you when you become a part of a team that's a big deal and

49:06You play a major role on how that team's going to be remembered for long

49:11term. And as we all know, there are these times in history where certain teams

49:15were better than others. And you always go back to these errors of certain performances

49:21of these great teams in history.

49:23And you think about it.

49:24And what ultimately I always see when we look back to the profound eras during

49:29different college sports teams, you find yourself a true coach integrated in every one of

49:36those profound, great eras. All right.

49:40So, you know, I wanted to shift it up from typical politics, the war in

49:45Iran, operators, all the other stuff I've been doing, because if you do or do

49:50not know, obviously performance is a passion for me.

49:53I love teaching. I do this in my day job every day.

49:57I work with some of the top business people in the country regularly.

50:00I still am available to work with different athletes and sports teams at every level

50:05and coaching them to really try and understand how they can maximize their experience and

50:11really move into that role where a true coach will seek them out, develop them,

50:17and they will have this profound legacy of the impact of what they've done.
