0:22we're back we have a great episode highly anticipated it's actually it's timely yeah it

0:35just came out so I'm proud of us yes me too because usually we do

0:39a movie up it's like a dry docket we're like what's in the theaters yeah

0:45the movie's like from 1968 yeah it's a Pee Wee Herman documentary kind of no

0:50one cared about so we did it we went to go see 28 years later

0:56Bone Temple I actually did see that the week prior it's really good really sick

1:04but we saw Wuthering Heights which was so bad yeah what did you say that

1:11you had nothing nice to say about this movie I don't have a single good

1:15thing to say Anna well then as my mother said you don't say anything at

1:18all so we may as well wrap it up wrap it up that's great I

1:23feel like when we review movies we generally like benignly disagree but we both really

1:30really hated this movie well I think I have more of a you know I've

1:35I have pretty low standards to be honest and like I like to see the

1:40good in things yes I'm more of a generous viewer mm -hmm well you yeah

1:45it's like that god I forgot which is what makes the show so good that's

1:49the Anna Dasha dynamic yeah the Anna Dasha experience yeah and yeah I forgot who

1:56said this was it like Pushkin or Chekhov or something or somebody speaking about one

2:02of those guys but like you have to appreciate a work of art by its

2:08peaks not its valleys mm -hmm which I really do appreciate the sentiment behind that

2:13and when I am critical it's obviously like as a labor of love because I

2:20do appreciate the tremendous work and energy and effort that filmmakers and actors put into

2:29their craft but that said there's like literally nothing redeemable about this movie whatsoever well

2:34yeah it made me think back to right it makes poor things look like Barry

2:40Lyndon it's like like I think back to like the episode we did about poor

2:45things which I was like you know I have I'm like oh it's a little

2:48like whimsical it's a little you know or like Marty Supreme kind of drags and

2:52is a little formulaic or like you know like you have these critiques of movies

2:55then you see a movie this bad yeah and you're like I'm never saying anything

2:58bad about the softies ever again you're like those movies were masterpieces I didn't know

3:03how good I had it I know Wuthering Heights was like when you are it

3:11felt like looking at like X videos like right after you like busted a nut

3:15like the whole movie like you know it's like technically sexual but it's like it

3:21was the most unsexy repulsive upsetting ugly like vulgar stupid makes you sick you know

3:30those um like mugs and candle holders they sell in like shopes and bushwick and

3:36williamsburg that are like different types of tits mm -hmm that's what it made me

3:42think of yeah with like a cuss word it made me think of like timothy

3:48faust abortion is rad t -shirts the whole movie was like an ad for abortion

3:55it was like an ad for plan b it was it was the most like

3:59anti -sexual anti -natalist ugly wretched film made by anti -sexual anti -natalist ugly wretched

4:06people for an audience of like women who are like on birth control SSRIs their

4:12clits are like numb from using like Hitachi wands and they um yeah have some

4:19like email job yeah we used to call them girl bosses in the early days

4:26of this podcast but this is like something else mm -hmm it's like girl serfs

4:31yeah it's yeah it's yeah it's like perusing um reddit posts about um your sex

4:42life failing or being a fem cell it's so dark dude it's alarming it makes

4:48me think like something like this is like a red flag for the culture it's

4:52like honestly it's every and I would forgive so much of it if it looked

4:58okay like I'll watch a great point I'll watch a bad period movie as long

5:03as it's kind of like easy on the eyes this also looked so bad it

5:11just offended me oh yeah it was so ugly the set design was hideous the

5:16interiors hideous the costumes the costumes that's the one thing it could have had it

5:22could have like given us a costume like everything looked like something Beyonce would wear

5:29on tour the costumes were made of like um latex latex and what's that like

5:37crinkly plastic wrap fabric that I groaned out loud when she comes out in the

5:42nightie that's made out of like cellophane that's when she's um losing her virginity to

5:47her betrothed on the night of her wedding yep what a disgusting scene godless loveless

5:54movie that does great insult to the source material of the book with weathering heights

6:00by Emily Bronte which I just started reading uh it's pretty interesting so far it

6:05is very dark and gothic I'm gonna finish it I guess I'm gonna finish it

6:10right here on this podcast right now let's dig in um but yeah all the

6:14characters in the book are clearly meant to be unpleasant and terrible people sure and

6:24Emily Bronte understood this and intended it and Emerald Fennell to her credit also understands

6:31that that was Emily Bronte's intention except she doesn't understand what makes the characters so

6:36terrible yes and she doesn't understand that what makes the characters in the book redeemable

6:46is that they're young uh -huh that like when you watch a adolescent like Kathy's

6:5317 yes from the majority of the book yeah and we're supposed to believe Margot

6:59Robbie who's like 37 she I think I read somewhere that Emerald Fennell decided to

7:04age them up because they're not plausibly teenagers at all but even that is like

7:09the whole like when you are watching young people you know behave in unseemly ways

7:19yeah it's because they have like folly and youth and passion that is like and

7:26youthful folly that's like driving them to like consequence or ruin or like you're that's

7:30like that's the tension that's like what makes something dramatic tragic literary interesting watching two

7:37middle -aged people like yell at each other in the rain is just is pathetic

7:41like that's not that's wait from the jump like it's not interesting well let's okay

7:49so she's 35 how old is Jacob he's like 28 but he also he doesn't

7:54they're supposed to be 28 young that yeah they're supposed to be young and he's

7:58obviously like visibly younger than her in the movie um I'm going to preface this

8:03by saying that Margot Robbie is obviously very gorgeous and beautiful but she's too old

8:08and fat for the role she's clearly postpartum wrong kibbe type as you mentioned she's

8:15like a robust athletic blonde obviously Catherine Earnshaw is a um canonical sensitive bpd wave

8:25um Margot Margaret Qualley would have probably been better for the role she's a brunette

8:32she's like a mousy brunette even she's a little too healthy but she could play

8:35frail yes Margot doesn't even try like yeah she looks like I said like she's

8:41never been calorie deficient uh -huh or like even had a cold like she looks

8:45she looks so Australian and like robust old like I don't buy it there's nothing

8:52like in her and again I thought well she's beautiful obviously but nothing in her

8:56face like inspires like tenderness or she's just completely wrong yeah and they have no

9:04chem they I don't care if they fuck yeah that looks really um that yeah

9:09their chemistry is like non -existent and lacking yeah it feels like even on the

9:14press junkets um they got rid of all the interesting elements of the book because

9:21it's like a sprawling dynastic inheritance saga um by literally killing off all the future

9:27heirs uh there's you know three children that come after um Catherine and Heathcliff I

9:35don't think there have been any adaptations that tackled like the second part of the

9:39book okay they all kind of yeah like because it's like a romance fantasy but

9:43which is a shame because um you know they they replace it yeah with like

9:47this bushwick tear like bean flicking and body horror um and the future heirs being

9:54um Kathy who's the daughter of Catherine and Edgar and Linton who's the son of

9:59Heathcliff and Isabella who are eventually married off by the cruel and scheming Heathcliff so

10:06he can take possession of both of the estates which again also is what makes

10:11like the things that unfold in the first part meaningful is that they like reverberate

10:17through time and have like multi -generational effects and this is literally like that like

10:21these people when they were so young like made these decisions that like doomed their

10:25children yes and there's even you know Kath Catherine and Heathcliff are the main characters

10:31of the book, but they don't have such a central role as they do in

10:35the movie. Like Catherine dies midway through the book and then her ghost stalks the

10:40moors and marshes. And there's like this interesting supernatural angle that I haven't gotten to

10:45yet where Heathcliff exhumes Catherine's body after she dies and becomes possessed by her spirit,

10:53which is why he's such a mean and cantankerous old man.

10:55At the beginning of the book, the book starts as a, in contemporary times for

11:00the time and then is retold in flashbacks by Nellie, the housemaid.

11:09The Chinese maid with a mean face.

11:11And of course it's an adaptation, so I don't expect it to be faithful to

11:18the book, but the way that it deviates from the source material is very like

11:22interesting. And also, uh, I guess upsetting.

11:29Well, I don't think it owes, I do think I believe in the artistic license

11:34to completely, you know, even like it's on a mood board and you're calling it

11:38Wuthering Heights. But what Fennell does is like, not only does she just disregard what

11:45is compelling about the source material, she still like, she doesn't make a movie that's

11:52compelling in its own right.

11:53It's like leaning on the prestige and context and association of being Wuthering Heights.

11:58But if you, cause I read, I read the like vague, I know I definitely

12:02didn't finish it, but I feel like I've read it kind of in high school.

12:04It never really, it's not my thing.

12:07Like I said, I'd rather read a Russian book.

12:12Like, yeah, I'm going to, I'll give it a shot, but it's already way better

12:16than the movie, obviously. Of course, but that's, yeah, like, so I went into the

12:20movie being like, okay, I'm going to just watch it like on its own, like,

12:23as if it has nothing to do with Wuthering Heights.

12:26Yeah. And she doesn't do enough like structural work or character development to make you

12:34care about. Yeah. It just seems bizarre.

12:37It's confusing what the movie is even about, except for like the raving fanatical, like

12:43fantasies of like a washed up, aging, empty egg cartons, roasty, void.

12:52And of course, like, who's like dreaming about like being ravaged by a roving young

12:56brute or whatever. And of course, like, again, Margot Robbie, extremely beautiful and gorgeous baby

13:03Gerald, Hollywood actress. But she's a stand in for all of these like office worker

13:11women my age. I mean, there were a lot of Zoomers in the theater.

13:16I think it's really resonating with like wide demographic.

13:20Brainwashed women everywhere. Yeah. There was actually, I was seated next to like a row

13:25of five Zoomers who had gone together.

13:30This is the most packed movie that I've ever been to.

13:33Usually I'll go to a movie and there'll be like three people in the theater.

13:37Yeah. And they were all like sniffling and crying and having emotional outbursts.

13:42And meanwhile, I was like just repelled and seething.

13:47Yeah. I was like scoffing and like rubbing my temples.

13:51If I'm going to spike my cortisol, just like doom scroll Twitter.

13:55I don't need to spend two and a half hours doing this.

13:59I hate it every second of it.

14:01This is going to make me infertile.

14:03It's so disgusting and evil.

15:04The there's a lot of like, yeah, these overtly sexual but extremely unsexy scenes and

15:10like symbols. Let's see. I have there was that Fran Leibovitz clip circulating.

15:23I think some gig I posted it in response to Wuthering Heights where she talks

15:27about how the AIDS epidemic preceded the death of like a whole subset of a

15:32population that was basically the death of like connoisseurship.

15:35Yeah. And so like the quality of the audience has declined.

15:38Yeah. And that's how exactly how Wuthering Heights feels.

17:32degrading but he doesn't listen to the part where she declares her love for him

17:35blah blah i actually missed that part because i was like taking a week one

17:39of many because i kept taking bathroom breaks so incensed and then he returns like

17:44a maid man with a mysterious fortune a weird gay earring have you seen like

17:48um the new um fungal sti that's making the rounds in the gay community they

17:53invented a new sti they got monkey pox round too yeah except it's like not

17:58a virus and not a bacteria it's a fungus and it like um what it

18:03it like appears as like gross like um keratinized um masses on your groin and

18:11armpits and like chin it looks so disgusting i love gay guys as like a

18:16um of course ride or die fag hag and friend lebowitz is right the aids

18:20epidemic was a tragedy yeah for all of us but it was a tragedy that

18:25they really lost in the culture yeah yeah and she's very astute in pointing out

20:07like bushwick house of yes like haunted dolls well it's always a little bit of

20:15that because it is like that's forgivable in isolation like some of these things are

20:21forgivable some are not but in its amalgam there's nothing good so it's i just

20:26think like you could have really like even if you were gonna um deviate significantly

20:32from the original there are so many missed opportunities for creating yeah like beautiful exterior

20:39shots beautiful interior shots beautiful make it a vibe costumes picnic and hanging consistent yeah

20:46um saw another great take that was like every time i was thinking this scene

20:53couldn't get any worse charlie xcx's voice came on the soundtrack yeah it was even

20:59the non -charlie song so overwrought and like inappropriate yeah and then the charlie ones

21:04it's like yeah she's literally she's going for marie antoinette uh -huh sofia coppola's the

21:10strokes yeah it's contemporary worse in every fucking anachronistic that's fine that's fun sofia coppola

21:17did it very well those are very beautiful apex twin versailles yeah genius it can

21:23be done this well those are very beautiful this dog shit this is the worst

21:25shit i've ever seen um yeah and there was like going back there was all

21:32these like uh gross sexual scenes and symbols that were like you know the eggs

21:39in the bed as a practical joke the snail crawling across the window pane the

21:44kitchen maid kneading the dough in a way that like mimicked flesh slapping together during

21:49coitus it opens on this hanging scene that was the best scene the first sounds

21:55like he's coming yeah and you're like oh is somebody dying or are they fucking

22:00and then she runs with that sex and death yeah what if yeah let me

22:05teach more we get it what if a corset is painful it's all such low

22:11-hanging fruit you know it's just like vulgar girl boss feminism but in a new

22:20modern iteration that got the software update and has become even worse because of like

22:27kink culture yeah like there's a scene where heathcliff um licks the pussy juices off

22:33of katherine's fingers after he catches her like flicking her bean among the rocks which

22:39is just like disgusting and unnecessary i've seen i've seen step -sibling pornos that are

22:44more cinematic and valuable than this whole movie and like the thing is yeah the

22:50whole movie is also premised um on a very um appealing and erotic trope which

22:57is an incest fantasy and they even botch that people were contrasting this with like

23:02a scene in pride and prejudice where um the male character who plays darcy i

23:10don't remember the actor's name like brushes against keira knightley's hand while she's entering the

23:14carriage which is like way more sexy and poetic than anything that you see in

23:21this film there's nothing sexy about it it's like devoid of eroticism it is like

23:28pornographic but without even really committing to that it's not like immoral tales yeah or

23:35like some amazing like katherine brulee movie where like you're actually seeing something transgressive happen

23:41it's all like very contained very like hr friendly compliant book talk slob well it

23:49is yeah it is um hr friendly slop on the one hand but on the

23:53other hand it's just like completely like tasteless and vulgar in a way that makes

23:57you like uncomfortable not aroused it's like the cinematic equivalent of the fact that you

24:03can now buy quote personal massagers at cvs and target yeah it's disgusting it's like

24:13the enemy of sexuality yeah the democratization of sex toys which i always found to

24:19be like lewd and offensive and like sex negative at the end of the day

24:24um what else happened in this horrible um irredeemable film uh the oh the other

24:39thing that really um grinded my gears is that of course the character of heathcliff

24:45is supposed to be ethnically ambiguous he's like this foundling that um katherine's drunk dad

24:52brings home from the big city one day because he's sick of being long housed

24:55by women well that's what there was like a first wave of controversy when she

24:59cast a lordy from like woke um people with bas in literature being like heathcliff

25:07isn't white yeah and to whitewash him yeah instead of casting an actor of color

25:14uh -huh like erases the complexity of the book and like i guess um from

25:19what i've gathered he's supposed to be romani yeah he's a gypsy he's described in

25:23the book as a gypsy he's possibly like you know spaniard or an indian something

25:27elardi's gypsy he can pass he's a spaniard yeah he can pass he's he's just

25:32the right amount of ethnically ambiguous yeah he's actually that isn't the problem he's a

25:37swarthy white guy which is what heathcliff yeah it is more or less which yeah

25:41in victorian england wasn't like what quite yeah so he was like othered yes and

25:47um actually that's probably like the best decision he was a jew should have been

25:56adam driver wait he's not even jewish no but he's always doing he's always oh

26:02yeah he's like male rachel senate um jew face that was fine jacob alordi as

26:10heathcliff he was the right amount of uh ethnically ambiguous for the role but then

26:15of course the jobby the entire yeah the entire cast is like a chinese woman

26:20or vietnamese woman playing nally and like a bloody packy playing edgar which completely like

26:27that was the annoying part because it completely defeats the purpose of heathcliff being ethnically

26:32ambiguous if the whole cast is like underlit people of color extras to quote steve

26:38saylor yeah you can't cast someone more ethnically different than heathcliff he's supposed to be

26:44the one that's different yeah it's like more incoherent than whitewashing yeah it's like so

26:50confused you on purpose and almost hostile spiteful it you know you had that great

26:56line that i've retweeted today because somebody quoted you um about god i'm gonna pull

27:01it up because it was really really great what did i say um it was

27:04from the last episode um and i'm glad somebody noticed it because i feel like

27:10people don't listen to us anymore um and yeah in the super punishing doldrums of

27:16the peak woke era entertainment had this very spiteful edge and you kind of spoke

27:23too soon because she really brought that back it has a spiteful punishing edge this

27:27movie and yeah the asian actress who also ages too drastically yes she's way older

27:36she's like 50 margot robbie is 40 how much time is like 30 yeah but

27:42they're supposed to be they're supposed to be the same age yeah and she ages

27:47like severely she doesn't wear sunscreen so she looks like shit and margot robbie being

27:55like papa will whip me it's like you're grown like he's that's like it's just

27:59it's like really disconcerting the way she's acting um the asian or the the servant

28:07um companion being um a poor asian woman was actually kathy wear your handbag you

28:18find husband i don't have chance to find husband kathy you are disgusting her tiger

28:25mom ass assistant um she her being asian while uh a grating and annoying in

28:39a flagrant way is like woke more correct because she she was like a scolding

28:44and scheming um project manager bitch uh who was like clearly jealous and resentful of

28:58she she was keeping her down by um through this deception where she was keeping

29:04um the correspondences that that katherine and heathcliff wrote to each other away from them

29:12and burning like throwing them in the fireplace which ultimately leads to um katherine's untimely

29:19wasting and death the most disgusting scene of the entire movie where um she's like

29:26getting um blood let by leeches because she's in sepsis yeah right and then has

29:33like a abortion or miscarriage and bleeding all over this pink satin sheets which is

29:40kind of fully went on my phone at that point like really repulsive i like

29:44couldn't even look at it at a certain point i had to like avert my

29:47eyes yeah um and i don't mind go i like you know i love gore

29:54i don't use like there's this movie called inside this french film yeah about a

29:59pregnant woman who's being like stalked uh -huh by some freak with scissors who's like

30:03trying to cut her open and it's it's very like that sounds amazing extreme like

30:07french wave of like those really fucked up horror movies and i like that shit

30:11typically but in this case it's so stylized it's like more offensive on a taste

30:18level than the than the gore itself it's just unclear what the um what purpose

30:24it's hoping to accomplish because yeah it's just like mucky and demoralizing it's it's neither

30:31sexy nor scary well i have actually i have a note about sorry no no

30:43worries i mean the other thing that's like so insulting about um them cutting the

30:49child heirs out of the movie through this horrid abortive scene it's not so much

30:58that i'm opposed to like the ideological implications of it or even to like the

31:05technical deviation from the source material again uh but that it's done in such an

31:13opportunistic way to expedite this cheesy corny sexual fantasy that the movie really is about

31:25it's like a paperback novel yeah those are probably much better honestly yeah the one

31:31where the woman has to work at like the minotaur dick sucking farm or whatever

31:35that people were posting well like um a male friend of mine was like i

31:44feel like feminism is exposing um the ways in which like female sexuality is super

31:50like revolting like disturbing yeah and i don't think it's like an innate female sexuality

31:57i don't like something feels it's like birth i think birth control yeah or like

32:04an overstimulation overly like pornographic culture or something yeah it doesn't feel like a natural

32:11expression of like desire or eroticism yeah it feels like um women women you sustaining

32:20entertaining some fantasy that they think they should be well it's for people who like

34:02to stop yes he's like asking her over and over i will never love you

34:06and i will always be thinking of her do you want me to stop but

34:09yeah then he's like getting cruel and brutish do you want yeah the affirmative consent

34:13that like traps it all in this like sterile contractual like the worst thing about

34:21bdsm yeah like act like no one has to actually be like accountable for any

34:26pain because everyone's like consenting yeah and so then nobody's cruel and nothing matters yeah

34:32and yeah it's actually just purely consensual and bloodless yeah for all the for all

34:38the blood it is a very like bloodless film and uh there i think she's

34:45also trying to do this thing where she wants to be edgy she wants to

34:49be an edgelord and be like see i'm a feminist but i know the truth

34:53about female sexuality and that it's submissive and likes abuse and like wet and like

35:01messy squishy women are messy and our sexuality is messy is that a problem but

39:29uh should have just killed the husband and taken his property i don't really see

39:37i don't really see the the problem the conflict in this film it's like okay

39:40she married a rich guy to save her family's estate and uh is having an

39:48affair with a formerly poor guy who's now richly just keep it moving well in

39:53a not you know there's no conflict here i mean in a novel i assume

39:57it's more of like a slow you know like anna karenina you know that's a

40:01long -ass book yeah about a woman who cheats on her husband kills herself you

40:05know and that's like a relatively like banal drama but what a novel is able

40:09to do and what a film should or can also do you know is like

40:14make you feel like attached to these people so that when these things transpire mm

40:19-hmm that are in the grand scheme of things relatively banal they have like a

40:22charge and a humanity behind them yes it's like yeah elevating the mundane or whatever

52:21like historic interiors and exteriors which um felt hate to see it poorly executed and

52:28somewhat cheap completely the materials felt cheap i don't know what it was shot on

52:33but it the lighting the fabric yeah the color grading even was like inconsistent it's

52:42very like spirit halloween haunted house like the billowing smoke just feels like a fucking

52:48haunted house it doesn't even feel atmospheric like the constant rain feels retarded there's no

1:01:55this other she's from like an antebellum time yeah and like her demise is the

1:02:02demise of like a world that has ceased to exist and so it's like contextually

1:02:07meaningful it matters it's like that's what she's sad about she's a pitiful and pathetic

1:02:13character but you can still but she has a light inside her she's you know

1:02:19like surviving in light of her circumstances and then until she doesn't and none of

1:02:26that is in is it i didn't see anything even remotely like that there's i

1:02:32mean yeah there's no like um charm or grace about this character but there's no

1:02:37particular like um viciousness or cruelty either she's just like kind of a non -entity

1:02:43a non -factor and we have to spend like uh two and a half hours

1:02:47with her the other thing that um just dawned on me now that that's very

1:02:52perplexing is for how like opportunistic and incidental it was of them to you know

1:02:58scrap the um whole second half lineage arc of the um children who grow up

1:03:08in the um shadow of their doomed forefathers forebears or whatever the the lost bait

1:03:17the dead baby in the movie is a boy when right the living daughter in

1:03:24the book is a girl so it is like this really like cruel feminist angle

1:03:29where she destroys her son right is it a boy yeah yeah i didn't even

1:03:38yeah at that point i was so like like like averting my eyes i'm like

1:03:43texting but they they obviously make him a boy not not for like ideological feminist

1:04:01plot point in the book that they don't produce a male heir and her they're

1:04:05like yeah inheritance only like heathcliff and isabella end up having a male heir right

1:04:19that's but i get it you can't like do all that in a movie the

1:04:22way that a novel can but you can make a movie that's good on its

1:04:25own merits yeah of course i mean there's there's a character um uh catherine's older

1:04:30brother i forgot what his name was hartley or hinkley or something who appears in

1:04:34the book he's he becomes the um heir to weathering heights after their mean drunk

1:04:41father dies and they sort of collapse his arc into the arc of the father

1:04:46because at that point like that seemed like a fair and reasonable decision because they

1:04:52were just it would have been too complicated to introduce this other guy sure and

1:04:56this other family line maybe not i'm sure it's been done i haven't even seen

1:05:01any of the other adaptations yeah which is what i also feel like i can

1:05:06appraise it in a very objective way and all of that would have made it

1:05:12better but not there's just the lack of chemistry is a structural flaw like the

1:05:20whole story depends on these people having a genuine attachment to one another because the

1:05:28whole idea right is that they are which is wrapped up with all these other

1:05:31wild at heart and free spirits in the same way yeah and yeah they have

1:05:36these like pathologies but when you're young the decisions you make kind of like fossilize

1:05:43and cement your troubled personality into ways that are meaningful but when you're old who

1:05:54gives a shit right like you're already what the fuck happened who cares you know

1:06:0010 years ago you're how long has this moved i don't i don't want to

1:06:06see a movie about middle -aged people being um petty and pathetic unless horny and

1:16:40irritate the audience or like browbeat them into compliance of course this is totally subconscious

1:16:54comes in when it's like expedient she doesn't have her own interiority yeah no one
