3:08I'm Dr. Nicole Sapphire. Well, today's episode, it is a tough one, but it's a

3:12very important one because I'm going to be sitting down with a mom who is

3:16living with stage 4 colon cancer, metastatic colon cancer, meaning the cancer has gone beyond

3:22the colon and it has spread to distant parts of the body.

3:25And she's sharing her story with the kind of honesty that can really change how

3:30people pay attention to symptoms, advocating for yourself when you go to the doctor, and

3:36potentially risk factors, but more importantly, what it's like living with a cancer diagnosis.

3:42Here's the reality. Here's the reality.

3:45Colorectal cancer, meaning colon cancers and rectal cancers, it's absolutely rising in adults, especially younger

3:51adults. In the United States, the incidence is increasing about 3 % per year for

3:57those ages 20 to 49.

3:59Even as rates are dropping in older adults, they're actually rising in younger adults.

4:04The reason they're dropping in the older adults is because older adults are getting colonoscopies

4:10and they're finding those precancerous polyps and having them removed.

4:14So the rates of polyps turning into colon cancer in older adults going down because

4:20they're getting those precancerous lesions removed.

4:23But unfortunately, younger people who are not getting strain and colonoscopies are being diagnosed with

4:28colon cancer at an increased rate.

4:30So people born around 1990 have about double the risk of colon cancer and about

4:37quadruple the risk of rectal cancer compared to those born around 1950.

4:43Now, yes, colonoscopies have a part in it, but it's also due to some other

4:48things. Today, we're going to unpack a little bit about why, what to watch for,

4:53and what you can do, including risk factors, screening recommendations, and some practical things that

4:59you can do. So if you've ever brushed off, I know you don't want to

5:02hear about this, but rectal bleeding, you know, bright red blood in the toilet, persistent

5:07changes in your bowel habits, or you've been told that you have anemia, but no

5:12one knows why, or you're losing weight, this is your sign right now to stop

5:16ignoring it. Joining us now is Elizabeth Price.

5:19She has put together a beautiful children's book, which I have spent time.

5:23going over. Not only did she write it, but she was also the illustrator, which

5:28I was incredibly impressed by.

5:30And so I think everyone will be inspired by her and will learn something just

5:35by hearing her story. So I would love to dive right in.

5:38Elizabeth, thank you so much for joining.

5:40Thank you so much for having me.

5:42So I want to just start.

5:45First, let's introduce you. You were a chiropractor for over a couple of decades.

5:49You're a mother, but you were also given a pretty tough diagnosis many years ago.

5:55Tell us about that. Yes.

5:57So when I turned 50 and decided to do all the right things and go

6:02ahead to my mammogram and went and had my colonoscopy, without any family history, I

6:08came out of the colonoscopy with doctors waiting to tell me that I had coli

6:13cancer. That following shortly after that, I had found out that it had already spread

6:19to my lungs and that I was stage four.

6:22And at that time, the diagnosis was a two to five year survival rate.

6:32And how long ago was that?

6:33When was that? That was in 2017.

6:36So that was eight and a half years ago.

6:39You've already defined that. Yes.

6:43On paper, I may not look great, but mentally and on my every day and

6:49to my family and friends, I'm no different.

6:53You know, I don't feel any different than anyone else most days.

6:56And I just, I'm more, I more consider myself living with it, with living with

7:01cancer than, and fighting it.

7:05But you were given the diagnosis, you're told it was advanced.

7:08And what, what pursued surgery, chemotherapy, what was your treatment like?

7:13So for the first thing that they did was they found out that it was

7:17stage four and that I did have spread to my lungs.

7:22And then I started on a chemotherapy path and radiation and surgery.

7:29And at this moment today, I've had 144 rounds of chemotherapy.

7:36I have had 12 major surgeries.

7:39I've had 10 rounds of radiation.

7:42I have been under anesthesia about 22 to 25 times.

7:50I've lost count. I am awaiting a liver resection in three days and I still

7:57have significant disease and I'm okay with that.

8:02I'm, it's, you know, it's, I've almost accepted that this is my journey.

8:09I have to grieve my old life and I just have to go on living

8:13this life. And I have a family and kids and I have a very strong

8:18faith and an incredible group of friends.

8:21And I move forward day by day.

8:24So tell us what it's like hearing the words, I have cancer when you have

8:29kids at home, you know, how old were they?

8:31How did you? So, so when I was first diagnosed, my children were five and

8:3610 and, um, it was, it was devastating.

8:39It was almost, it was almost unreal.

8:43Like I, because I didn't have any family history because I was going to the

8:48gym and I was walking and I was very active and, um, very big social

8:54life, very big family life, traveling.

8:58And it just seemed very unreal.

9:00And the first thing you do is you look up and you Google stage four

9:05cancer and you don't see anything that you want to hear.

9:10And then it is terrifying.

9:12It was terrifying. And I still have days where I'm terrified.

9:16I still, um, I have not in the eight and a half years, I have

9:20never heard that I'm in remission.

9:22I've never heard that there's no sign of disease now.

9:26Um, so it's something that it takes a long time to come to terms with

9:34it. I am years and years, but when I do get down, I, I turned

9:41to my faith. I talked to my friends and I listened to other people in

9:46my situation who have defied the odds.

9:49And that reminds me that it's not up to the doctors.

9:53It's not up to the statistics.

9:55Um, and I, I had a woman once tell me only, you know, only God

9:59determines when you're terminal. So these things keep me going.

10:06Yeah. I mean, a lot of our day to day is so much of our

10:10mental and emotional health, just as much as it is our physical health and how

10:15you wake up and, you know, kind of the intention you set for the day

10:18certainly helps with how the day turns out.

10:21Tell us when you were given the diagnosis and kind of through the course of

10:26all of this treatment, what was the biggest thing that you found that you didn't

10:29expect? You know what? Everyone knows someone who has been diagnosed with cancer.

10:33Everyone has heard, you know, one story from another, but what are, what's something that

10:39kind of surprised you? When I first started chemotherapy and I made it through the

10:44first, um, at that time, my chemotherapy was a seven hour drip one day an

10:50eight hour drip the next day.

10:51I went home with it attached.

10:52And I came back two days later and I thought after the first time, I'm

10:57like, wow, I can do this.

10:59Like I can do this.

11:00And then I went the next time and it was a little less of a,

11:05wow, I can do this.

11:07And I think what surprised me is that chemotherapy gets harder as you do it.

11:13So every time that you do it, it's a little bit harder.

11:17It stays in your body.

11:18It's a little bit harder.

11:19I think that that was more of the surprise than I was thinking, all right,

11:25I have this because I did it once.

11:29I think also there's a lot of, there's so much good in doctors and nurses

11:36that treat you. And there are some that are just so realistic about the disease.

11:43And you have to really know yourself and trust in yourself and trust in what

11:51other people are saying to, to make it through the hard days.

11:57What was, you know, for, for your friends surrounding you, and once you kind of

12:02shared your diagnosis with them, what were some of the things that they did that,

12:07you know, looking back and are still doing for you?

12:09I mean, this is an ongoing process for you.

12:11Like what is like the best thing that they have done for you that has

12:15really helped you through all of this?

12:17From day one, when I was first diagnosed, my children go to parochial school and

12:22the mothers of my children, the class mothers, a bunch of them got together and

12:29started a prayer group, started a rosary group for me.

12:32And eight and a half years later, we are all still together.

12:35And they were actually, they were the force behind this book.

12:40Even I brought them my ideas and I brought them some of the paintings that

12:43I did while watching TV.

12:46And they, they just rallied behind my entire family and they rallied behind my kids

12:52and they're, because it's scary.

12:54I mean, I had phone calls from moms saying, Oh, my son heard something really

12:57bad happened to you. And, you know, with everything on TV and the, the moms

13:03just really took me in and we just became a family and we're still a

13:08family. Like, it's just, we're like a pack of that.

13:13I don't think we'll ever be separated.

13:16And I think that's so important to have people around you that are, are going

13:21to keep you feeling safe and know that, um, I'll be in the hospital this

13:28coming weekend and my daughter's birthdays this coming weekend.

13:30And I'm not at all, you know, worried about how that's going to go down

13:35because I know that I have this pack of women who are going to make

13:38sure that my daughter has like the best birthday ever.

13:40And, and that my, everyone has food and people are, that everyone's taken care of.

13:47It's been an unbelievable gift.

13:49Like they're a blessing. It's really been an amazing gift.

13:53So you brought up the book.

13:54Tell us about this book that you created.

13:56I have it sitting right in front of me.

13:58I mean, it's absolutely stunning.

13:59Um, it's called mom. I know what you have parenting with joy through a journey

14:04with cancer. Tell us about how you came up with the idea, the process and

14:08what it means to you.

14:09Yeah. So, um, one of the big things we did not know how to talk

14:14to our children about cancer at the time.

14:16We didn't use the word in the house, mostly because television, the commercials, um, they

14:23show people dying or, you know, in, in horrible situations.

14:27And then we didn't want them to think that I was going to die.

14:30And we, um, just didn't use the word.

14:35My son one time saw on the hospital wall, it said cancer center.

14:39And he asked my husband about it.

14:40And my husband played it off.

14:42Well, that's part of the hospital here.

14:43That's not part of here.

14:45And then one day I'm in my room and he didn't tell them you had

14:48cancer. You kind of, we did in the beginning.

14:50We did not in the beginning.

14:52We did not. It was a, it was a little while in and I was

14:55upstairs laying in bed and my son was downstairs and he started yelling, mom, mom,

14:59come here. And I came out of my room and we have a second doorway

15:02that overlooks down to the front hallway.

15:05And I started it. He was standing with his back against the front door.

15:08And I started to go downstairs and he put up his hand and he said,

15:10mom, stop. I said, okay.

15:12And he motioned for me to go back upstairs.

15:15So I'm standing up at the railing and I'm looking down on him.

15:17I'm like, what's up kiddo?

15:18And he was a long silence.

15:21And he was just looking at me and was very serious.

15:24And he said, mom, I know what you have.

15:27And it broke me. It just was the, it was the moment that it hit.

15:32I have cancer and my children are so young and I don't want them to

15:38not have a mother. I don't want them.

15:40I have a lot of faith.

15:42I, I walk through life knowing that when I leave this earth, that I am

15:50going to feel so good and I will have my old body back and I

15:56will be at peace and I will be with God and I will be in

16:02pain and I won't have trouble walking and I won't have trouble sitting and I

16:08won't have to say to my kids, I'm too tired, but I want them to

16:13have that mom that I had.

16:14I want them to have the mom that has the over -the -top birthday parties.

16:19And that will still go on the roller coaster.

16:22And everything I do is so that they will have the life that I really

16:29grew up with a great parents and a great mom.

16:32So I'm okay with the pain.

16:36I'm okay with the 144 rounds of chemo as long as it keeps me here

16:41long enough to just be a mom and make sure that they have a mom.

16:49So I just, with every little milestone that they hit in life and that they

16:54have hit, graduations, other things, I'm just so glad that I get to be there.

17:01And I think, okay, I made it to high school graduation and I made it

17:05to town, my son's prom pictures.

17:07And now I look forward to the weddings and I just keep thinking I'm going

17:12to be there to dance with my son.

17:13And it definitely is something when you have cancer and you're diagnosed with how I'm

17:19diagnosed. I went to a wedding and when they had the mother's son dance, I

17:25had to run into the bathroom and it like hit me like a ton of

17:29bricks. So I have to fight those moments and just remember, I keep telling myself,

17:34it's okay, I'm going to be there for that.

17:35I'm going to be there for that.

21:51So you're taking your experience and channeling a lot of that emotion to try and

22:00So that, because there were things that we did to stay, like I didn't, we

22:07didn't put me in a room and shut the door.

22:09One of the things which I show in the book is my kids put tents

22:12in the bedroom and they slept in my bedroom for years.

22:16I mean, they really just, and if they weren't sleeping there, they would come home

22:20after school and read their books in their tents while I was sleeping.

22:23So it's just some fun activities that we did.

22:28And my husband and I would always make sure that, you know, they saw me

22:34as not, this is my sick mom in bed.

22:38And so we did fun things.

22:40And I thought if I can put these in a book and help one other

22:43family make light of some of the trauma, that it wouldn't be so traumatizing for

22:50the children. These illustrations, were you an artist before you made this?

22:54Because it's beautiful. Thank you.

22:56I, I've never, I've, I did not go to art school.

23:01Um, I have my, I mean, my mother was artistic.

23:06Her father was artistic. So maybe it's just something that came down the line, but

23:09I've, I, I do get cravings to paint and I get cravings to draw.

23:14And, uh, so I did them while watching TV and watching the news.

23:21And, and, um, and then I brought the pictures and my phone, which I had

23:26like just talked to the book into my phone to the rosary group.

23:29I said, I kind of had this idea, but I know I'll just put it

23:33in a corner of the room and it'll end up there.

23:35And the women just took it and were like, can we do this?

23:40Because we need to do this.

23:42And they had it published in like a month.

23:46And, um, and we've taken, we had a, they had a GoFundMe set up and

23:52we had a bunch of books printed and now we've donated them to cancer centers.

23:57Um, if anyone's listening, they can reach out.

24:27everyone. So for those of you who follow me on social media, you will find

24:30it. So now that the book is out and I'm sure you're getting some feedback,

24:35you know, tell us a little bit about, you know, where, where are you at?

24:39You just, you kind of alluded that you have an upcoming surgery coming, but how

24:42are you doing right now?

24:45Um, so right now I have a significant amount of spread on my liver and

24:51I have about 24 masses in my lungs.

24:55Um, biggest, bigger ones are the size of about golf balls.

24:59And because of previous lung surgeries, I only have, oh, probably like one and a

25:07half, one and three quarters lung left anyway.

25:09So surgery to take those out is not something that's going to happen.

25:13Um, but they're going to try to take the cancer off my liver within the

25:19next week and we're hopeful about that.

25:22And then, um, I'll just continue on, uh, whatever the next steps are.

25:30I am trying to do as best as I can, um, holistically and I have

25:36a great oncologist who, you know, he just keeps telling me all you gotta do

25:40is make it till the next chemo comes out and, you know, we just keep

25:45switching that up and I'll get there.

25:48I'll get there. I'm, I'm, I'm determined.

25:53So, you sound strong. You look strong.

25:57Did it, I mean, I'm sure you noticed this, but since your diagnosis, the American

26:02Cancer Society has changed their screening recommendations from age 50 when you got yours to

26:07age 45. Yes. Um, yes.

26:13Well, considering, um, that they really determined that I've had this long, you know, that

26:21I had it since I was at least 45.

26:23I mean, there was no reason for me to think at 45 that I should

26:28go get a colonoscopy. Um, and I'm so thankful that they have changed it now

26:35because I know that my outcome would be completely different.

26:39I mean, if they catch it early, I mean, it's, it's somewhat curable in most

26:44people if you can catch it early.

26:45So, I'm a huge advocate for go get your colonoscopy.

26:49And if you think there's a problem and you're not 45, go there and demand

26:54it anyway. I mean, you don't have to wait for a doctor to tell you

26:57you're not 45 yet. If you have even like the slightest hint that something might

27:02be wrong, don't let anyone tell you that you're just being, you know, hypochondriac, there's

27:09nothing wrong with you. Just have it checked.

27:11that happens a good amount, especially in women.

27:14not going to be Thank you.

27:14We kind of get told that our belly pains are just belly pains and we

27:17can just deal with them.

27:18Yes. It's so true. I mean, everyone needs to listen to their inner self when

27:26it comes to their health.

27:28And I've seen a lot of doctors along the way.

27:30I've gone through a lot of doctors.

27:32When I see a doctor who may want to give me an expiration date, I

27:38thank him very much. And then I move on and I get some other opinions.

27:43And I think that, you know, the age being moved back to 45 is excellent.

27:48But I don't think that people should be like, well, I don't have to do

27:51it till I'm 45. Because look at me, I waited because I thought, oh, I

27:54don't have to do it until I'm 50.

27:56Do you have any symptoms looking back?

28:01Looking back, there were some signs that were there.

28:05The problem, or I shouldn't say it was a problem, but I had my daughter

28:09at 45. And I had preeclampsia.

28:13They had to take her a little bit early.

28:15And so some of the symptoms I had afterwards were attributed to that rather than

28:21being checked out. So some things that I complained about, they were, oh, you know,

28:27it's because you had this difficult birth.

28:31In hindsight, I should have gone and acted on the symptoms that I was having.

28:38Just so I can educate other people.

28:40Are you talking about possibly some, like, blood in the rectum or blood in your

28:43stools or anything like that?

28:44Some blood. Yeah. Don't let anyone tell you it's hemorrhoids until they've gone in and

28:50looked to see whether or not it's hemorrhoids.

28:52I had difficulty sometimes passing stool and going to the bathroom.

28:56My tumor was three millimeters inside the rectum.

29:00And that's why I was having difficulty.

29:04Don't let anyone tell you you have a prolapsed rectum without doing a exam and

29:11actually going in and seeing because most of the time those are not prolapsed rectums.

29:17Most of the times those are due to tumors.

29:20So there was a, looking back on it, yes, there was a long list of

29:25things that I just put full trust into, you know, my medical doctors who I

29:34do, you know, I put full trust into my medical doctors now.

29:37But I, I take accountability for myself and I, you know, you have to not

29:43let anyone say, oh, it's okay.

29:46But we don't have to check that.

29:47It's not the norm. Yeah.

29:50As you know, doctor, obviously being a doctor myself, you know, we definitely have a

29:54balance of, you know, chasing the zebras or just assuming the, you know, the hoof

29:59steps that we're hearing in the park are a horse.

30:01It's probably, they're probably not a zebra.

30:03Um, and so when a woman who had a difficult pregnancy, you know, the internal

30:09hemorrhoid is extremely common. And so to have, you know, bright red blood per rectum,

30:15you know, in the toilet, common things being common, it is a bleeding internal hemorrhoid

30:19because you don't really feel them.

30:20Um, but you're absolutely right.

30:23I mean, and significantly less common is colon cancer.

30:25Unfortunately, it's becoming more common these days, especially in younger people.

30:29But the reality is, you know, you can tip the scale either way.

30:34Every person who shows up with a little bit of blood, we can't send everyone

30:37for a colonoscopy. That probably doesn't make sense.

30:41Um, however, the reality is, you know, people know their bodies better than anyone else.

30:46And if they're telling you there's something wrong, you should probably do your due diligence

30:50to look into it. And I think, um, as colon cancer is becoming more and

30:54more common, you know, I really do hope that women are dismissed less than historically

31:00we have been. It would be wonderful if that ends up being the case.

31:06If we talk loud enough, it will.

33:43Are there any like takeaways that you have been finding just on a day -to

33:46-day, like things that you do that make you feel good, whether physically or mentally,

33:51you know, kind of despite everything that's going on?

33:55Honestly, I mean, if anyone is in my position right now and there's, there are

34:01going to be bad days and there are going to be, you know, good days.

34:05And on my bad days, sometimes it helps for me to listen to podcasts and

34:11listen to others in my position who have beat the odds.

34:15And it, it's so encouraging to hear people who have stage four and are living

34:21life and who have stage four and have beat it and are not stage four

34:25anymore and have no signs of disease.

34:27Um, there, there, there's going to be bad days.

34:32I mean, I definitely, I, there is a physical toll of having cancer.

34:38Um, but you just have to, you have to just, I think once I got

34:43to the point of acceptance and this is who I am and, and you have

34:49faith in that it's, it's what it's supposed to be.

34:55I think it makes life a little bit easier.

34:58And, um, and if you have children, they, they know more and they see more

35:07than you think they do.

35:08And it's better to talk to them when you can and include them in as

35:13much as you can so that they're not scared.

35:16So they don't go to bed at night thinking, oh, my mom's going to die

35:20because that's the last thing you want them to think.

35:22If anything, you want them just to know, okay, my mom's sick, but she's going

35:26to get better and have faith.

35:29Absolutely. Have faith. Well, thank you so much for creating this beautiful children's book.

35:34Mom, I know what you have.

35:36I think, I think it was cathartic for you and it was wonderful that your

35:39friends all helped you, but this book will obviously help so many others who are

35:44potentially going through, um, the same journey as you are.

35:47Thank you. Thank you so much for having me.

35:50All right. Well, if today's conversation, you know, hit you in the gut, like it

35:54did mine and you got a little emotional, all I can say is good because

35:58this is one of those moments where awareness can literally change outcomes and it can

36:03save your life. Colorectal cancer, it's not an older person's disease anymore.

36:08Like I said, rates are rising in younger adults and deaths have been creeping up

36:12in people under 50. As I mentioned, when I was talking to Elizabeth, when Elizabeth

36:18was 50, the recommendation was to get your first colonoscopy if you don't have family

36:23history at the age of 50.

36:24So that's what she did.

36:25She was following the rules.

36:26She was doing everything right.

36:28She had her colonoscopy at 50, but she already had advanced colon cancer.

36:33Well, we've gotten smart to the fact that these rates are rising, which is why

36:37in the last few years, the new recommendations are even without family history of colon

36:42cancer, you should be getting a colonoscopy at the age of 45.

36:46I have a feeling that's going to go a little bit lower.

36:49If you have a family history of colon cancer at all, you will definitely should

36:53be getting your colonoscopy before 45.

36:56Really, it should be about 10 years younger than when your family member was diagnosed.

37:01So if your parent was diagnosed with colon cancer at 50, you should be getting

37:05a colonoscopy at 40. And if you have any symptoms, whether you have risk factors

37:10like family history or not, those symptoms, rectal bleeding, bowel changes like constipation, unexplained anemia,

37:18unexplained weight loss, not because you're on a GLP -1, but all of a sudden

37:22you're just losing weight, do not let anyone dismiss you.

37:25You have to advocate for yourself.

37:27Yes, we all need to be increasing our fiber.

37:30We all need to be increasing our hydration.

37:33These can affect your bowel habits too.

37:35But if you've already tried to increase your fiber and increase hydration and you're still

37:39having issues, you absolutely need to go to a doctor.

37:42Why are more young people getting colon cancer?

37:44That's a really good question.

37:46And there's certainly not an easy answer.

37:48It's going to be multifactorial.

37:50We have some ideas. We know that our gut flora is completely disrupted.

37:55We've taken far too many antibiotics.

37:57We ingest far too many microplastics.

37:59We're not eating enough fermented food.

38:02And we eat way too much processed sugary foods.

38:06All of this is disrupting our gut.

38:09and that natural flora, those good bacteria in our gut that keeps it healthy.

38:15The first thing you can do to try and lower your risk of colon cancer

38:18is absolutely get a better diet.

38:21If the majority of what you're consuming is sitting in your pantry and it has

38:25an expiration date of like 2028, that's probably not a good thing.

38:30Fresh fruits and vegetables, decreasing smoked meats and increasing more lean proteins and like white

38:39fish, salmon, all these things can actually decrease your risk of colon cancer.

38:43Taking probiotics, prebiotics and increasing the amount of fermented foods like kimchi and pickles and

38:51sauerkraut, all these things can help restore that gut flora.

38:55And do not take antibiotics every time you have the sniffles.

38:59You don't need a Z -Pak all the time.

39:02I promise you, not only does it create antibiotic resistance in the bacteria and everything

39:09else and your body not being able to fight off these infections and take normal

39:12antibiotics, but it's also destroying your gut flora and that is increasing your risk of

39:17colon cancer. So only take antibiotics when they're truly necessary, when your doctor absolutely recommends

39:23them. Don't just take a Z -Pak or whatever it is because you have an

39:28upper respiratory infection. The reality is the far majority of them are viruses and you

39:32don't need the antibiotics. Even if you think, oh, I got better after taking a

39:36Z -Pak. Well, you probably would have gotten better anyway because it's just the normal

39:39course of the disease, the virus.

39:41So now I will get off my soapbox.

39:43You have heard me. I just want to again say I'm so grateful that Elizabeth
