3:10Welcome to Wellness Unmasked. I'm Dr.
3:12Nicole Sapphire, and this is your weekly rundown.
3:14First, microplastics and brain health.
3:16A massive literature review examining more than 100 studies is raising concerns about micro and
3:23nanoplastics and how they interact with the human body.
3:26These tiny particles, we've talked about them before, found in our food, our water, air,
3:31even the clothes we wear may trigger neuro information and certain proteins clumping in the
3:37brain. These same protein clumps that are associated with Parkinson's disease.
3:43Now, this research, like a lot of research, shows correlation, not causation.
3:48So the conclusion of this huge review was, well, more research needs to be done.
3:54But at this point, there's a lot of research.
3:57There's a lot of research that shows microplastics and nanoplastics in our brain, in our
4:02gut. They're disrupting our hormones, potentially causing levels of infertility and other things.
4:09We know they cause blanket inflammation throughout the brain.
4:12So I guess my takeaway, it's not panic, but it's awareness.
4:17Like following some simple steps, like don't heat up your food in plastic containers.
4:22Try to use glass containers or even stainless steels.
4:25You can stop wearing those synthetic athletic clothes that so much of us are wearing.
4:30You know, try to use more natural clothes.
4:32Water filters are always great to help give us clean water, but the reality is
4:36they are not good enough to replace and filter out the nanoparticles.
4:41So try to make sure that you are getting the healthiest and most pure water
4:44sources possible. Okay, moving on from microplastics, because I don't want to bore you because
4:49I've talked about them. We just keep getting more and more research.
4:52The time is now to start lowering your exposure.
4:55Another big thing that came out this week, childhood obesity and the GLP -1 medications.
5:00Multiple pharmaceutical companies are now starting trials in children as young as four.
5:05Now remember, GLP -1 medications have already been approved for kids 12 years and older,
5:11just like many adults are on them.
5:12But now they're shifting their research to kids who are even younger than 12.
5:17Is this a good idea?
5:18Well, nearly one in five American children are obese.
5:21So while medications like GLP -1s...
5:24can help reduce weight loss.
5:26We're seeing that. They're designed for that.
5:29My huge concerns when it comes to this is we need to focus on the
5:33foundation of healthy living when it comes to these kids because these medications are designed
5:38for lifelong and long -term use.
5:41The majority of people who take these medications, yes, they do lose weight, but as
5:45soon as they stop taking the medications, they gain weight back.
5:48Not to mention the fact that these medications cause nutrient depletion.
5:52If you're depleting nutrients in kids that are still developing, how will it impact their
5:58brain health, their muscle health, their bone health, their hormonal health?
6:01Is it gonna even increase the rates of infertility?
6:04My guess is probably yes.
6:06And if we're not teaching kids healthy behaviors when they're in elementary school, how can
6:12we expect them to ever adopt these healthy behaviors as they get older?
6:16We need to focus on nutrition, physical activity, healthy sleep, and reducing environmental toxins that
6:22are disrupting their metabolism. We have to get them off their screens.
6:25Sure, medication may have a role in very limited, rare cases, maybe kids who are
6:31born with some levels of metabolic disorders, but the long -term solution here is building
6:36healthy habits early and absolutely not prescribing lifelong, expensive medications to children.
6:41I think that there will be severe short -term and long -term consequences, and I
6:46am staunchly opposed to these medications being used in younger people.
6:51That's it for me on this week's Wellness Unmasked weekly rundown.
6:54I hope you're having a wonderful week.
6:56Be sure to tune in next week, and I'll talk to you then.
