0:49I mean, Taylor was really, you know, hot at the time.

0:52He'd been nominated for Oscars, and I was kind of, like, surprised he was even

0:57writing a television show. He was just, like, so hot in the film business.

1:01How the fuck does that guy even sleep?

1:04I don't know, man. Where does he have the time?

1:06Every time I look in the news, or there's a new show that he's doing,

1:10a new thing he's doing, it's like, how are you doing all this?

1:13It's impressive. You know? It's insane.

1:16There's a lot of people I've worked with where they do things that are impressive,

1:19but his is impossible. Right.

1:21You know, like, someone would be like, could you direct a movie as good as

1:24Unforgiven? I'm like, maybe. Maybe if I tried real hard, but, like, could you write

1:2810 television shows single -handedly?

1:31No. No way. Not possible.

1:33He directed Unforgiven? No, I'm just saying, like, people that I look up to that

1:37I'm impressed by. It's like, his is a different level.

1:40Right, right, right. His is, like, it's, like, impossible.

1:42Who did direct Unforgiven? Clint Eastwood.

1:44That's the fucking greatest Western movie of all time.

1:47It is. It's the best.

1:48Yeah. It's like, you know what it was like to me?

1:51It was like, he was making up for all the silly Westerns and was like,

1:56let me show you what it was probably really like.

1:59Yeah. What it was really like when a man was about to get shot?

2:02What it was really like when a dude was a stone -cold killer?

2:05Yeah. What was it really, like, the hardships of living back then?

2:09Yeah, and it's interesting, too, because he starts out kind of a loser.

2:13Yeah. Those first, you know, like, the first three quarters of the movie, he's this

2:16sort of timid guy who's lost his power, you know?

2:20And then he takes that one sip of whiskey, and it's all over for everybody

2:24else. It's a crazy premise.

2:27It's such a good movie, man.

2:28It's such a good fucking movie, man.

2:30But, yeah, Taylor is a, he's a real freak, and there's not a lot of

2:34humans like him, and it's, his background story's so interesting.

2:38You know, like, he was just kind of scrambling around until he was almost, like,

2:4240. Yeah. It's like a real -life Rocky story or something.

2:45Yeah. Like, rags to riches, the whole, the whole thing.

2:47I know, man. It's just, I just don't, I guess that's why he has so

2:51much ambition, because he knows what it's like to be poor.

2:54Right. You know? He knows what it's like to, like, barely make it.

2:57Right. Then all of a sudden, he's got a kid on the way, and he's

2:59like, oh, shit, I gotta buckle down.

3:02Yeah. And really get moving, and he kept his foot on the gas.

3:06Absolutely. Do you guys keep in touch?

3:08Yeah. His buddies? Yeah, yeah, all the time.

3:10I love Taylor, man. I love him.

3:11He's an awesome dude. I just worry about him.

3:13Like, you know, you do so much.

3:15Like, don't have a fucking heart attack, man.

3:17Don't go crazy. You know what's weird is he does, he does, like, have a

3:20good time, too. It's not like he doesn't hang out with his family or friends

3:24or, you know. That's the craziest thing to me, is, like, the guy has a

3:28really fun life and is able to do all that.

3:31I guess, like, the moral of the story is don't play golf.

3:56it's not the worst thing ever is too much time.

3:59Right. And my problem is I'm an addict.

4:02Like, when I start doing things, I just start, like, okay, I need to play

4:06in the PGA. I start going crazy.

4:10I'll start getting lessons. Fuck that.

4:48Yeah. Like, I think it's almost like a prerequisite to be president.

4:52Yeah. You know? Don't they all do it?

4:54I guess so. It's like one of those weird businessmen things.

4:57Like, they make deals out there.

4:59They have a couple of cocktails.

5:04Make some deals. I just don't, I don't know.

5:06Something about being on like a manicured lawn.

5:08I don't, I don't know.

5:09I'd rather be out in the middle of nowhere.

5:11I'm sure I'd love it.

5:13I'm sure. Which is why I don't do it.

5:16But I play pool. And I'm addicted to pool.

5:19Like, I play pool all the time.

5:20It's a real problem. When I lived in New York, I was playing like eight

5:23hours a day. Yeah. I was playing in tournaments.

5:25I was traveling around. I was like, I can't, I can't get another thing like

5:30that in my life. Are you done playing pool?

5:32No, I play all the time.

5:33Oh, okay. Yeah. But you could play pool for like a couple hours and stop.

5:36Maybe I'll try that. Pool's fun.

5:38Yeah. Yeah. Like real pool, like tournament pool, you know, like competitive, like real tournament

5:44pool. It's legit. But it's like, it's another thing.

5:48It'll get in your blood and then you'll be thinking about it all the time

5:51and watching videos and taking lessons.

5:54I'm ready for something though.

5:56Yeah? Yeah. Not golf. Pool sounds like up in the alley.

5:59Well, you have music and you have acting.

6:01Like you said, that's got to be kind of hard to manage.

6:06Yeah. It's proving pretty difficult.

6:07And I have an 18 month old.

6:09Oh, that too. In the mix.

6:10Yeah. yeah so no sleep uh yeah we're we're getting there i i you know

6:14the the music thing is sort of it's kind of nice because there's not a

6:18lot of pressure on it you know for me i i have a day job

6:21you know i have this thing that supports my family and the music i can

6:25do to like my passion level uh you know and i and i wouldn't do

6:31it to the point where i'm like away from my family too much you know

6:33so i can i like making the music touring is kind of hard and it's

6:37and it's also new for me so learning how to do that at 40 was

6:41uh kind of interesting you know i feel like in my 20s that would have

6:45been the most fun ever yeah sleeping on a bus with 12 dudes and just

6:49going from city to city and you know drinking backstage and playing country music that

6:54would have been a blast but i'm you know too old for to do that

6:58the right way yeah when you tour do you go out or do you do

7:02like a weekend and then come back or do you when you're on a full

7:05-blown tour that the the way that it financially works the best is to just

7:09stay kind of going so you're doing like three shows like thursday friday saturday because

7:14you've got the bus rented you've got all the equipment rented you got the guys

7:17you know on salary so you just have to keep going it's actually really hard

7:22to for it to pencil out when you're just doing a show here and there

7:26right yeah that's stand -up comedy so much easier in that regard i've only done

7:32one stand -up comedy tour tour i did it with charlie murphy and john heffron

7:37we we did this bud light maxim tour back in 2007 and we did like

7:4322 dates in a month and so it was like i'd wake up and i

7:48wouldn't know where i was i'd look at the ceiling i'm where the fuck am

7:51i i don't i would have to think uh columbus you know i'd have to

7:56like go through my head and figure out where i am when i woke up

7:59was there ever like a period of stage fright when you started doing stand -up

8:04oh yeah yeah yeah the first day i was more afraid the first time i

8:10got on stage than i was the first time i fought it was nuts yeah

8:14i was like why am i so nervous i was like i was thinking about

8:18chickening out i was thinking about not doing it i do that every time i

8:22play a music show i do i'm like can i just call it off do

8:26you still get stage fright right now really bad really well that's the thing man

8:30i i'd always played music and when i was playing in bands and playing out

8:34i was the drummer oh so but i always wrote songs and stuff but i

8:37never thought i had never had ambition around like i want to be the guy

8:40in front of the microphone that was never you know the plan and then you

8:44know to be able to make an album which i wanted to do you have

8:47to go stand in front of the microphone and that's the hard part for me

8:50i love being in the studio i love writing the songs i love making the

8:53music recording the music but there's something about knowing that all these people have shown

8:57up and bought a ticket to see you and you're like all of a sudden

9:01this thing starts happening in me we're like they bought a ticket imposter syndrome you're

9:06not good enough for them to have spent their money and you know it's just

9:08this whole thing and it's like dude shut up i know it's going to be

9:12okay but it doesn't matter every time i still get a little bit of the

9:15you know i think everybody who's sane gets imposter syndrome yeah yeah okay everybody that

9:21i've talked to that's saying it's like the really kooky ones don't like i don't

9:25think kanye's ever gotten imposter syndrome you know what i'm saying yeah it's like the

9:32better be also he's a genius but it's like the ones who were saying like

9:37it doesn't make any sense like none of it makes any sense yeah well i

9:42i get it in droves and and way more for the music than the acting

9:45but it's again i've been acting in film and tv for over 20 years now

9:49when did you first get on stage to sing how old were you um the

9:54very first show i played i was 39 oh my god yeah yeah like i

10:01had done karaoke before right but you know i it kind of came about in

10:08the weirdest way i i literally was on set one day and get a call

10:11out of the blue from this manager this music manager uh matt graham who's a

10:15great manager and a really good friend of mine but he called and said hey

10:18i know you don't know who i am but i know that you're a musician

10:22and you know i i love yellowstone i love you in that show would is

10:26that something that you would want to take seriously and i was like like what

10:30does that mean he's like i bet i could get you a record deal and

10:33i was like no man that's no no i don't want to do that and

10:37we talked for two years and over the course of the two years i really

10:40started to trust him he sort of like explained to me what you know what

10:43would be required and long story short my my father passed away somewhere in there

10:49and sort of one of the last things he sort of conveyed to me was

10:53like if there's anything you want to do while you're here do it you know

10:56and that's something about that moment i was like i'm just gonna fucking do it

11:02you know i don't care what's what's the worst thing that can happen i'm another

11:05actor who made a goofy album right so what i got to do it you

11:09know um so i did and then immediately it's like well now you have to

11:13go tour it otherwise you know they're not going to put up the money for

11:17you to make these things if you don't go sell it you know so the

11:20tour is sort of to get the music out there and get people buying it

11:24um and so yeah first show it was in billings montana for i think it

11:28was 1200 people whoa um this place called i think it was pub station what

11:33was that like first time dude dude i blacked out like not drinking like i

11:40just blacked out on nerves dude like it you know it started my knees were

11:44shaking my hands were shaking this is before i knew about like beta blockers or

11:47anything like that and i the show was over and i was like how was

11:52was that okay how how'd that go and everything was good you know it's good

11:56i was fine the fourth show i ever played was stagecoach whoa yeah um that's

12:03nuts it was crazy i mean it was earlier in the day it's not like

12:06i had you know 100 000 people out there but still that's a big stage

12:10that's a big stage and um yeah so but you know little by little it

12:16got somewhat better i don't black out anymore i kind of i know where i'm

12:19at and i'm there but it's still something i deal with oliver anthony you you

12:24The first show he ever played live in front of people was like 20 ,000

12:28people. That's insane. It's so nuts!

12:30That's insane. Wasn't it like that?

12:32It was huge, right? It was a gigantic crowd.

12:36I don't think I'm exaggerating.

12:37Because he got really famous before he ever went on tour.

12:42That one song, Richmond, North of Richmond, that song, like, instantly made him famous.

12:50He rode a rocket, dude.

12:52That rarely happens. You know, few people know that feeling.

12:55I can't imagine. He was freaking out.

12:59Like, I became friends with him, like, right when it was happening.

13:02Because he was, like, a little lost and he said a bunch of people...

13:05I go, let's talk. So we got on the phone.

13:08Like, it was before he had, you know, he'd gotten a ton of record deals

13:13and all these different people were saying, you know, hey, sign with me, we'll give

13:17you X amount of money in advance.

13:18I go, don't sign nothing.

13:20And he was like, everybody's telling me that I got to strike while the iron's

13:24caught. I go, no, no, no, no, no.

13:25I go, dude, you got talent.

13:27I go, you got real talent.

13:29You're always going to have talent.

13:30It's just a matter of putting in the work and you're going to be huge.

13:33You don't need these people.

13:35These people are all vampires.

13:36They're all just trying to suck on your neck.

13:38Don't let them. Don't let them.

13:39Don't let them. Thank God he listened.

13:41Because he was getting offers like $7 million and shit.

13:44And he was a fucking heavy equipment salesman.

13:46You know? And so then all of a sudden, he's like, what the fuck is

13:50going on? One song with him and a guitar just standing in a field.

13:55And that's all it took.

13:56That's amazing. I mean, it's how it should be, right?

13:58It's cool. I have the complete opposite story.

14:00That story's not cool at all.

14:02Well, you're still cool. I'm like, I'm a successful actor and I got a record

14:04deal for no reason. Yeah, but you had a record deal because you wanted to

14:08do it. Because you're interested in that too.

14:11Like, you can do anything you want to do.

14:12Like, just because you're a successful actor doesn't mean you can't do it.

14:16Right. But I think, you know, a lot of the thing with music is the

14:19story of the person. So I knew going in, like, I don't have the best

14:23story. I do come from nothing and I did work my ass off to become

14:27an actor and all that.

14:28But, you know, my way into the music was a little wonky.

14:32Well, sometimes that's good because it makes you work harder to prove to people that

14:36you're legit. Yeah, yeah. Because you have this thing over your head where they're like,

14:40fuck that pretty boy, motherfucker.

14:42TV star, motherfucker. Fuck that dude.

14:45Fuck Casey Dutton. There we go.

14:47So the music's going to have to be good enough.

14:49Yeah. That's just sort of the thing.

14:50That's all it is. It just will force you to work harder, but it's just,

14:54everybody's story's different. That's what makes it fun.

14:56If everybody had the same story, you know?

14:59Yeah. I mean, you're kind of the king of following your passion, right?

15:03You've done that. Yeah. I've been super lucky, you know?

15:06I'm just lucky that there's a job for all these things I like, you know?

15:10There wasn't. Well, there wasn't for this one.

15:13You manifested it. Yeah. This one, there was other people doing it already, but it

15:15wasn't a job for the longest time.

15:17It's kind of a fun story that me and my wife always joke around about.

15:20Cause like one time she was taking the kid, we were all supposed to go

15:23to Disneyland, but I had to do this podcast.

15:27I'm like, she was like, you don't have to do it.

15:28I go, but I do.

15:30I do it every week, but it wasn't really making any money back then.

15:33But I was like, I promised people it would be out.

15:35Like I gotta do it.

15:37And now she's like, thank God you didn't listen to me.

15:41It's just, I mean, I got lucky.

15:44I came in right at the right time.

15:47There was only a few people doing it back then.

15:49And I just did it for fun.

15:50I just thought that would be fun to do.

15:52Yeah. And then all of a sudden it became a job.

15:54Yeah. And with the UFC stuff too.

15:56Yeah. That too. That was fun too.

15:58Did you think that would become what it became?

16:01Yeah. When I first started doing it was in 1997.

16:04And it was in a high school auditorium in Dothan, Alabama.

16:09And we had to take a propeller plane to get there.

16:12And it was banned from cable.

16:14So you could only watch it on direct TV.

16:16This was UFC 12. Wow.

16:19And there was no one in the audience.

16:21And no one was watching it.

16:22And I was already on a TV show.

16:24It was on news radio.

16:25And the people on news radio, like the actors and the producers, they were like,

16:28what are you doing? You're flying to go do cage fighting?

16:31It was almost like I was doing porn.

16:36Or fucking snuff films or something.

16:38It's like, dude, you're going to ruin your life doing this.

16:40I was like, I don't know what you guys are talking about.

16:43This is what I've always wanted to see.

16:45I've always wanted to see all the best martial artists of different styles get together.

16:48Nobody ever did it. These guys are doing it.

16:50I'm going to go. Yeah.

16:52I remember renting the first few from Blockbuster.

16:56Yeah. It was like blood sport back then.

16:58Oh, yeah. Oh, it changed my life.

17:00I got UFC 2 was the first one.

17:03The first one wasn't available.

17:04You had to get 2 was the only one.

17:05And it was on VHS tape.

17:07And I had a buddy of mine who told me about it.

17:09He's like, dude, you got to see this thing, man.

17:10He goes, they got these guys that are fighting in a cage.

17:13And this one dude is just choking everybody.

17:14And he's wearing a gi.

17:16I was like, really? What is it?

17:18And then I watched it and I was like, holy shit.

17:21Yeah. I was hooked like right away.

17:24I was like, they fucking did it.

17:25They actually did it. Because like when I was a kid, everybody thought that what

17:30they were. If you did karate, you thought karate was the best.

17:32If you thought judo, you thought judo was the best.

17:34And nobody really knew what was the most effective martial art because nobody had ever

17:38put together anything like the UFC.

17:40Right. So once it happened, I mean, it was just such a huge part of

17:43my life. I was like, I'm not going to not do this just because it's

17:47bad for my acting career.

17:48I'm like, if my acting career goes away, I don't, you know, whatever.

17:51I'm only doing this for money anyway.

17:53So I was like, I'll just figure it out.

17:58You were the only person in L .A.

18:00with that mentality, by the way.

18:01That really served you well.

18:02Well, I wasn't supposed to be in L .A.

18:05You know, I mean, I only came to L .A.

18:07for money. And I would have moved back.

18:10I was living in New York and I did a show called Hardball and that

18:14got canceled. And the only reason why I stayed is because I got a lease

18:17on an apartment. I was fully ready to get out of there.

18:20I was like, I got to get the fuck out of this place.

18:22I hated it. I hated being around actors.

18:25I hated being around producers and casting agents.

18:28I was like, these people are so fake.

18:30I was used to being around fighters and comedians and pool players.

18:34Like the rawest, funniest, like outcasts of society.

18:39like those are my people i was used to like cracking jokes with friends and

18:43everybody was like busting on each other and everybody had a great sense of humor

18:47just silly weirdos and then all of a sudden i'm around these people that like

18:52all had these like predetermined things that they thought they should say so they would

18:56say them you know and everybody had like it was all group think it was

19:00like oh this is fucking horrible yeah i always say that felt like when i

19:04lived in l i lived in l .a for 16 years and and you know

19:07i don't want to complain about it i was obviously good to me like it

19:10you know helped my life quite a bit but it always felt like everybody was

19:15trying to become the same person yeah but they don't know who that person is

19:18i'm like can we can you just tell me who the person is so i

19:21can right you know what i mean there's like a memo that went out that

19:24i didn't get or something so nobody got that memo they were all playing it

19:28by ear you know and they were just it was all dependent upon what the

19:32producers and the casting agents wanted you to be so everybody would sort of adapt

19:36like whenever you got a place where everybody has the same politics that's not a

19:41good sign like that something's gone wrong and everybody has these progressive left -wing politics

19:47regardless of whether or not any of their positions make sense they all just sort

19:51of spit it out well i think it's just that there is sort of a

19:55desperation that gets bred from i mean these people left their families they moved away

19:59they left everything they've ever known and gave up a lot of comfort and security

20:03and love to to follow this dream yeah and so that that dream becomes more

20:09and more and more important you need it more and more because now you have

20:12nothing else yeah you've given everything else up and so i think at that point

20:16you can you can sort of mold people into whatever oh for sure it ruins

20:21comics yeah because when comics start doing well one of the first as soon as

20:25they start getting on television the first thing they start doing is tempering their material

20:29they tone it down a little bit take the edge off don't say anything that

20:32can get you in trouble and you know generally those are the funniest things the

20:38funniest things are the things that could go terribly wrong you know and get you

20:42in trouble so they do that and then just you know they become like an

20:47i always call it the velvet prison because you get locked into that velvet prison

20:51you get you get on tv you get get money but also you become just

20:57one of everybody else yeah it's hard it's hard not to do i mean i'm

21:00that's where i'm at you know i still have a boss yeah you know my

21:04my checks are written by a very specific company that you know i have to

21:08be careful sometimes i know you know even doing this today i'm like just a

21:13little bit i don't want to do that to you and sit here and like

21:15police myself the whole time but i gotta be like just don't say this right

21:19oh yeah no i'm firmly aware of it people come in here and i could

21:24see it in their face like please don't bring up anything crazy no trans talk

21:28for sure let's stay away from that today yeah people i mean it's it's you

21:35know it's a tricky situation and the the thing about la too is everybody has

21:41to get picked for stuff yeah it's not like even like music like especially look

21:47at oliver anthony no music deal no nothing just put something on youtube blows up

21:51yeah that's a real in this day and age that's a real thing but in

21:54acting it's still you have to get chosen you have to get cast for something

21:59and just that weird thing alone where you're going into this thing and these people

22:04have to approve you and most of the people that get involved in acting in

22:08the first place a large percentage of them they did it because they didn't get

22:12enough attention when they were younger and this is like they they just want to

22:15make up for well that's why i became a comedian i'm pretty sure you know

22:19it's all the same kind of mindset like there's something about you that wants to

22:23be famous right there's once you know unless you're like someone who's just in love

22:28with the craft of acting you know right which how could you be when you

22:33know i made the decision that i wanted to be an actor when i was

22:35like five years old really i didn't know what the craft of acting was my

22:39thing though honestly was i loved movies so much i think i just because i

22:44i i liked them more than my life you know i wanted to live in

22:50the movie i didn't know what making them would actually be like i didn't know

22:53what that career looked like i didn't know what acting was but i would go

22:57to the movie theater and want to be in it and i'd also see the

23:01guy and i don't know whatever the skill set was i was like whatever they're

23:04doing i think i can do that i think i have whatever that is and

23:09you know thank god i was at least somewhat right or i'd be waiting tables

23:13in la right now well it's an interesting thing right because it's a craft that

23:20seems like you're just doing normal life right like you're you're pretending but you're you're

23:28acting and behaving in a way that people do act and behave like that's the

23:33key to it it has to be believable yeah so most people watch it go

23:37i can do that like it's this is normal life they're just acting like they're

23:43in normal life right but what you don't realize is that there's like a dude

23:46with a beard with a microphone in your face and 200 people standing around waiting

23:50for you to be done so they can do their job sipping coffee shaking their

23:54head right if you fuck up a line like oh jesus yeah fucking unprofessional yeah

24:04exactly yeah it's a weird gig man it's a weird gig and it's not what

24:07most people think it is and you could tell that by like the masters the

24:11real masters you know when you see like a daniel day lewis do it you're

24:15like okay whatever he's doing i'm not doing that that's yeah that's a fucking totally

24:19different thing right this guy's in some weird place where he becomes gary oldman becomes

24:23a different person every movie and you believe it yeah that's the real craft of

24:28it right we're like i fucking know that's gary oldman right but he's different and

24:33every now he's dracula and i believe it he's amazing both of those guys amazing

24:38you ever watch that show um slow horses i love it fucking great show yeah

24:43it's really good it's a great show i can't wait for the new season i've

24:46hooked somebody told me about it and i was a little skeptical at first it's

24:49like all right and you never see like a lead you're you're number one like

24:53a total piece of shit right total piece of shit yeah except tony soprano there

24:58you go yeah yeah that he was that was a weird show right like a

25:01guy was a murderer and a thief and you love him you loved him he

25:05was so good yeah there's another guy candolfini man you fucking believed him and there

25:42dude's got or while he was alive he had demons in his brain like you

25:48could tell right like there was moments these menacing moments where he was like threatening

25:52someone or doing something you're like that's coming from a real place right that's that

25:59guy you know there's some guys who play tough guys in movies like i'm not

26:02buying it but with that guy you're like oh okay there's this guy could kill

26:07somebody you don't want to piss him off in real life well he's also out

26:12of fucking control you know you ever uh see the list of the things that

26:16he consumed before he died i have seen that it's bananas yeah i mean he

26:21was just off the rails crazy out of his fucking mind but i've seen the

26:24hunter s thompson one oh dude we narrated it we read it and then this

26:29guy what was the dude what's the guy's name that turned it into a song

27:51to do a deep dive on him i've never read any of his stuff really

28:00and loathing in las vegas was a he got a assignment to cover i think

28:05it was a motorcycle race that was the job so i think it was for

28:10sports illustrator or something like that he got a job to just cover a race

28:14and he goes down there and just brings every kind of fucking drug known to

28:20man drives through the desert in a convertible with his friend and just writes this

28:25insane book it's completely insane has nothing to do with this motorcycle race it's just

28:30all about the chaos of being out of your fucking mind in vegas and it's

28:36brilliant it's so good check it out do you like vegas i mean i'm there

28:42a lot for fights and when i go we go to a restaurant i go

28:47play pool i go to the fights i don't do anything else so it's like

28:52for me it's like yeah there's great restaurants you know the fights are awesome i

28:56love doing that so it's like but there's something about it where i ever every

29:01time i go there i'm like can i live here like i was actually talking

29:04to my friend tony hinchcliffe about it this past weekend we were just there for

29:07the fights and um i was saying like what if a because you know kill

29:11tony is this gigantic show now it's huge he sells out arenas all over the

29:15country with it it's on netflix and i was saying like what if a vegas

29:19casino offered you a fucking pile of money would you do you think you could

29:24ever live here and we're just sitting there he's like i don't know i don't

29:29want to do it i don't think i could do it because i i think

29:31it's like sleeping next to a vampire like even if you know that the vampire's

29:37in the other room is not going to bite your neck it's like he's right

29:40there you know it's like for sure i don't think it's good for you vegas

29:44to me is like you know when you you have a big night out on

29:48a certain type of booze and you get sick and then anytime you drink that

29:52booze after that that's vegas right anytime i land in vegas i'm like oh i

29:56just feel gross because i remember the last time i was there or the first

30:00time yeah it's i think the people that live outside of vegas like people live

30:06in henderson and places like that they love it because it's really nice out there

30:09like you go out to the outskirts of vegas there's beautiful neighborhoods and nice communities

30:14and like great stores and restaurants and stuff it's nice but you're still next to

30:19the death star right it's like this big neon fucking vacuum just sucking people's money

30:25out of them i've never been off the strip maybe i should try that out

30:28yeah yeah there's a there's there's great restaurants and great neighborhoods like it's it's fine

30:34outside but the reason why they're there is because of the death star like that's

30:39what brings everybody there you know everybody's there to just lose all their money yeah

30:43make really bad decisions like i all my friends who gamble when i would go

30:48there with them i go look at this place see how big it is how

30:50do you think they got that money suckers like you this isn't this isn't like

30:58a fair exchange like they're giving you goods and you're giving them money no this

31:03is like they're giving you this like crazy proposition where you think you're gonna Play

31:08blackjack and win a billion dollars.

31:10And if you win too much money, they kick you out.

31:13Did you ever gamble? No.

31:16Not really. I mean, I've bet some money on fights.

31:19I've played blackjack a few times, but I've never lost any real money.

31:23But my friend Dana White, he's a fucking degenerate.

31:25Like a crazy degenerate. I went to visit him recently.

31:30So he was at Red Rocks Casino.

31:32And a couple of my other buddies were there.

31:34So we showed up and went into the blackjack room and he was there.

31:37And when I got there, he was down $600 ,000.

31:41When I got there. And it was a normal night for him.

31:45And he wasn't even nervous.

31:46He was like, hey, what's up?

31:48He's shaking my hand, giving me a hug.

31:50All these other people are there.

31:51And I got fucking massive anxiety.

31:53I was like, this is crazy.

31:56How are you? And then so him and Jamie was there too.

31:59And him and Taylor LeJuan, the football player, he coaches Taylor how to play blackjack.

32:06And so they got together.

32:08He tells them when to hit and when not to hit.

32:09And they did it right next to us.

32:11Within five minutes, Taylor was down $125 ,000.

32:20He got up and then they quit.

32:22So he quit ahead. I think he won like $100 ,000.

34:13Because we've talked about, you know, we have a comedy club in town, the Comedy

34:17Mothership. And we talked about doing another mothership somewhere.

34:20And the two most likely places that we would be able to do it are

34:25New York and Vegas. So we talked about doing one in Vegas.

34:29But I was like, man, the only way it would work is I'd have to

34:32be there a lot. Like, we'd have to be there a lot.

34:35And we'd have to, you know, we'd have to make sure that it's run right.

34:38Let's, like, run with the same vibe that we run in here where everybody's cool.

34:43There's no assholes. Everybody's real friendly and real supportive of new comedians.

34:47And then I'd have to spend a lot of time there.

34:50I'm like, I don't want to do that.

34:51Right. Wouldn't New York be, like, returning to where you cut your teeth or something?

34:56Is that where you started?

34:57Yeah, I mean, I started in Boston.

34:59But I did spend a lot of time in New York.

35:01New York would be a better option, really, because there's a lot more talent there.

35:05And in order to have a really good comedy club, you can't just start it

35:11out. Like, you can't just go, like, to Columbus, Ohio, or Cincinnati.

35:15I guess Columbus has, like, a little bit of a scene.

35:17But you would have to have a real scene with, like, real headliners and, like,

35:22top -level talent. And the way we were able to pull it off in Austin

35:26is everybody moved here during the pandemic.

35:29Like, me and Tony moved—Ron White moved here first, and then me and Tony moved

35:33here. And then once we started doing shows, we were talking to all our friends

35:36in L .A., and L .A.

35:37was shut down during the pandemic.

35:39And so everybody just kind of moved out here, at least temporarily, because comedians are

35:44junkies. Like, they want to go on stage.

35:46And it was taken away from them for a year and a half in L

35:50.A. Couldn't perform in L .A.

35:53for a year and a half.

35:54Made no fucking sense. And out here, we were just doing shows, like, in November

35:58of 2020. Like, it was indoor shows and super -spreader shows.

36:04And so because of that— Super -spreader.

36:06I forgot about that word.

36:07Tom Segura moved here. Christina Pazitsky moved here.

36:11Tim Dillon moved here. I mean, it's just like—Shane Gillis moved here.

36:14It was like we had so many, like, national headliners, we could pull off a

36:18club. Yeah. But you have to have that kind of thing where it's not just

36:23the weekends, but you have to have, like, Tuesday shows, Wednesday shows.

36:27It has to be, like, a lot of people around that you could have a

36:31show with. The infrastructure. Yeah.

36:33I randomly lived in Austin during COVID.

36:37Oh, really? My wife and I, we got married in November of 2019.

36:41She's from Brazil, and I'm from Ohio.

36:43So we had no—there was nowhere we were going to live or it was going

36:46to feel like home. But we, you know, I'd lived in L .A.

36:49for 16 years. I was ready to get out.

36:51We wanted to start a family somewhere else.

36:53And we didn't know where to go, so we came here in December of 2019.

36:58And we had the best two months ever.

37:01And then everything shut down, and we're stuck in an apartment, don't know anybody.

37:06And, you know, it didn't really get a fair shake.

37:08We loved it while it was going.

37:09And then, yeah, I did about two months of lockdown.

37:13Couldn't do it anymore. And then we bought an Airstream and just started traveling around.

37:16And then I had to be in Montana for work for Yellowstone.

37:20And we parked the Airstream up there and never left.

37:22And then we went to the Airstream up there and never left.

37:22oh wow montana's fucking awesome it's the best it's so great it's so beautiful last

37:29time i was there was in the summer well actually last time i was there

37:32i was hunting with bourdain we went pheasant hunting there that was pretty cool oh

37:36yeah yeah it was one of the last times i saw him what part oh

37:40i forget i forget where we were and i'm pretty sure i flew into bozeman

37:46but i think we're outside of billings okay i forget um but the in the

37:54summer there is insane yeah perfect it's so beautiful perfect everything's green you see the

38:01mountains we heard wolves howling one one night and you see elk herds just chilling

38:06on the side of a hill like god this place is magical and it doesn't

38:10get dark till like 11 at night right yeah it's very confusing to know like

38:14when to eat dinner because you're just like it's light for so long but then

38:18in the winter time the you know the exchanges it gets dark at 4 30

38:21p .m right um but yeah we love it man it's the best thing that's

38:26ever happened for me it's just sort of like all the la stuff we were

38:29talking about it's the opposite of that the opposite there's i have no fomo about

38:33anything anymore you know oh that's great i can just think and sleep and read

38:37and watch films and it's the best yeah well your show made a lot of

38:42fucking people move out there though that's true yeah and they're not happy about it

38:46the valley that i live in we had some people come visit us our friends

38:51from california drove out and we went on a hike and uh we were in

38:55their car and they had you know cali plates and we get off the hike

38:59and someone had written go back in the dust on their car like people are

39:03super weird about so i don't tell anyone like exactly where i'm at because they

39:07would get really mad at me dude that happened in 2012 i was hunting in

39:11montana we went to the missouri breaks and um we we were going to this

39:17restaurant and one of the guys in the restaurant had he had his car parked

39:21outside and it was like a rental car and someone had wrote go back home

39:26you know like montana is for montanans or something like that they wrote it in

39:30the dirt right which is dumb because if they have the plates they clearly aren't

39:34living there you know right yeah they're visiting they're going back yeah but it's just

39:38retards you're gonna get retards in every state like if you have a hundred people

39:42one of them's a fucking idiot sure right and if you got a town of

39:46you know x amount of a hundred thousand people you're gonna have a good amount

39:50of fucking dumbasses for sure those are the ones like this is our place we

39:54own it this is our dirt meanwhile someone moved there at some point exactly you

39:59know yeah somewhere along the line someone moved there and all you did was stay

40:02exactly you didn't do anything that cool exactly you know what i mean exactly exactly

40:06and that one guy i can't go to bars there anymore because whatever that one

40:10idiot is is at the bar of course and he can't wait to start a

41:58the the locals were very angry and i don't know if that's locals like making

42:01some stuff up to sort of cause a problem but they were saying that they

42:04were finding sewage from the yellowstone club in the in the local river there whoa

42:09yeah you have to look that up oh whoa yeah that's not good that's the

42:13problem with rich people yeah rich people are like fuck everybody else i haven't been

42:20to that place but i heard it's awesome and the views i've seen photographs of

42:23it god the fucking views they're insane yeah i have multiple friends that live in

42:28montana and the the thing about it is like everybody will tell you like when

42:33you're surrounded by those mountains and you look out at them every day it like

42:37centers you and it humbles you that's exactly right it's like the most spectacular natural

42:42art you're ever going to see and it's around you all the time and i

42:45drink my coffee every morning looking out the window and it looks like a painting

42:48and it never gets old you know if if we need to go to the

42:52grocery store i'll do it because it's so fun to drive there you know you

42:56get out you put some tunes on it's the best thing ever versus like living

43:00in la to go anywhere was the worst thing ever right um yeah everything's a

43:05pleasure up there man it's really it's something but if you if you if you

43:09need any sort of like fast pace or socialization or if you're like trying to

43:13meet a babe or something it's not gonna happen there's no people dude yeah i

43:19get that there's a little of that in austin they're upset that the californians moved

43:24here yeah they're upset there a lot of people blamed me and elon sure they

43:29blamed us for for moving here and ruining austin like sorry we made it more

43:34awesome fucking pussies shut your mouth It's all the same thing.

43:38It's like people that want credit for being here first, like, fuck off.

43:41Now you have more restaurants, way more comedy.

43:44There's like seven comedy clubs on my street now.

43:47On the street where my club is, there's seven comedy clubs now.

43:50That's amazing. It's like one of the big hubs of live comedy in the world

43:55now. Did it have it at all before?

43:57It had a couple places.

43:58There was a place called Cap City that actually went under before the pandemic, or

44:03actually like right at the beginning of the pandemic.

44:05When I got here, it was for sale.

44:07And so I was looking at that place to buy it, but it didn't work

44:11out. And then there's another place that's been around forever called the Velveeta Room.

44:15It's a real small room.

44:16I think it seats like 100 or so.

44:18And then, you know, I think there was maybe a couple other bars that maybe

44:22had comedy. And there was like a small scene of some comedians, but nothing like

44:26what it is now. It's not even comparable.

44:30I mean, there's like 17, 18 world -class comics that live here now.

44:35Wow. It's crazy. And talk about stage fright.

44:38I think that is, that would be the hardest art form.

44:41You have no help. There's nothing to hide behind.

44:44Right. There's no music. Right.

44:45There's like, you know, it's just silence and you and a microphone.

44:49You can't just get into your tune and fucking just play and close your eyes.

44:54No, there was a film actually one time that I was attached to to play

44:58a stand -up comedian. And I promised the director that if we got our funding

45:02and got the green light to go, that I'd go do it.

45:05That I'd actually go out and like work up 15 minutes and just, you know,

45:09do it until I understood what it was like.

45:12And that movie fell through and I was very, very happy about that because I

45:16didn't want to do it.

45:17It's hard. I bet, man.

45:20It's confusing because the people are just talking.

45:23You're like, why is that hard to do?

45:25Everybody talks. You know, like everybody could tell a story.

45:28Everybody could. And it seems easy to do until you do it.

45:32And then you're like, oh, this is.

45:33But I was hooked right away because I sucked the first night that I bombed.

45:38But I was like, I got a couple of laughs on some things.

45:41And I was like, I think I can figure this out.

45:45But I was, like I said, I was more scared than when I was fighting.

45:48I was more scared before like a big fight.

45:51Like it was weird. I was like, why am I nervous?

45:55It didn't make any sense.

45:56My friend Whitney Cummings explained it to me.

45:58She said people have this fear of public speaking because in tribal societies back in

46:04the day, the only time you spoke in front of a large group of people

46:07was when you're being judged because they were going to kill you.

46:11Oh, interesting. Right. Yeah. Doesn't that make sense?

46:14Yeah. Yeah. So like if you're in front of people, they're all like, what did

46:19he do? You know, so you have to like, guys, I didn't steal the tomatoes.

46:25Yeah, I never thought about that.

46:26Yeah. That's what it is.

46:27Yeah. No place to hide, man.

46:29I don't know. That sounds scary.

46:31And especially if like it starts going bad.

46:33Yeah. Like if you start to bomb.

46:34Mm -hmm. Is there any way out of that or is it?

46:38People have recovered. Yeah. People have started off bombing and then pulled themselves out of

46:42it. I've done it a couple of times.

46:43Most of the time when I'm bombing, I'm bombing forever.

46:45Like, yeah. But. You're going down.

46:47But there's a good to that.

46:50All right. The good is you have to reexamine your material and you, every time

46:54in my career in the, like the early days when I bombed, I always got

46:58way better afterwards because I was like, whatever the fuck that was, I don't want

47:01to experience that again. And I really focused and really, really wrote like crazy and

47:06went over recordings and buttoned down and trimmed things and changed things around.

47:10And you need losses. Losses are very important.

47:15They're important in fighting. They're important in life.

47:20Like one of my kids just had a breakup recently and I had a conversation

47:24with her. I go, I know this sucks, but this is actually important.

47:28Like it has to happen.

47:29And I told her like about like the first time a girl broke up with

47:32me when I was 17.

47:33I was devastated. Oh, the worst.

47:35Oh, the worst feeling. Couldn't believe my life was over.

47:38I'm only 17. I can, I'm never going to recover.

47:41I'm like, it's so important.

47:43Because you realize like as time passes, you understand that this is just a moment

47:49in time and there's other people you're going to meet.

47:51And it's just, you have to develop some resiliency, some emotional resiliency.

47:56Right. And so you have to experience that.

47:59And you also have to realize that, you know, people, they don't know what they're

48:03doing either. Like boys don't know what they're doing.

48:06Girls don't know what they're doing.

48:07They're kind of figuring it out as they go along.

48:08People break up and they make up.

48:10And these are these lessons that you have to learn in life.

48:14And loss is important because it makes you understand like why this person gets sick

48:18of me. Why am I annoying?

48:20Why, you know, am I selfish?

48:23Like what is it? What is wrong with me?

48:24You know, why, you know, why am I picking these people that are going to

48:28break my heart? Why don't I adjust?

48:31Why don't I like maybe I should spend some time alone and figure out what

48:33the fuck is wrong with me or figure out who I am.

48:36And those moments where you have to kind of go through things and figure them

48:41out. They're so important for you in life.

48:44And for a comic, bombing can oftentimes be one of the best, like motivating factors

48:50to take you to another level in your career.

48:54Or wreck your confidence forever.

48:56Right. Just like fighting. Yeah, I was going to say it happens to fighters a

48:59lot. Oh, yeah. Some fighters lose and they're never the same again.

49:03And some fighters lose and then a new version of them emerges in the next

49:07fight. You're like, whoa, this dude dialed in.

49:09Who would be a good example of that?

49:10Charles Oliveira. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

49:12He's the best example of it.

49:14Because for the longest time, everybody thought he was a quitter.

49:17Like, he would just break.

49:18And now he's like one of the scariest motherfuckers alive.

49:21Yeah. You know, especially this last weekend, the fight with Max Holloway.

49:24Amazing. Like, good lord. Like, Max Holloway was a two -to -one favorite in that

49:28fight. He got shut out.

49:30Yeah. Like, literally, every round was a dominant performance by Oliveira.

49:34It was crazy. It's funny people complaining about that fight, too.

49:38It's like the... Because it was on the ground.

49:40Right. Yeah. My daughter complained about it.

49:42Did she? She's like, the main amount was so boring.

49:46You're a casual. My kid's a casual.

49:49People love a slugfest, don't they?

49:50Oh, yeah. They do. They do.

49:51They do. They do love a slugfest.

49:53Yeah. But, you know, that's that's the sport.

49:57The sport is like sometimes it's going to be exciting and sometimes it's just going

50:01to be a ground battle.

50:02But for me, it was exciting because I was trying to figure out whether Max

50:05could get up, what he could do to prevent from getting taken down and whether

50:10or not he could figure out a way to reverse the position and get on

50:14top. And, you know, when you're watching like a guy dominate a world champion like

50:20that, it's just you're in Marvel.

50:23You're like, wow, this is crazy.

50:24I can't believe he's able to do this.

50:26This is nuts. I wish I would have started jujitsu when I was small because

50:31I tried like, you know, late 30s.

50:33And I was like, it was kind of like the golf thing where I was

50:35like, well, first of all, it's way cooler than golf.

50:37But I was like, the amount of time is going to take me until this

50:40doesn't feel like being smothered.

50:42Yeah, it's gonna be a long time.

50:43And I don't know if I have.

50:45I don't know if I can start now.

50:46You know what I mean?

50:47I'm sure. Yeah. Like, how long would it take for like a grown person until

50:53it until you actually know what's going on intuitively and it doesn't feel like chaos?

50:58Well, there's there's layers of knowing intuitively.

51:01Like there's guys like even as a black belt, there's guys that I could roll

51:06with and I would just get humiliated because they're just so much better than I

51:11am. Like my friend Gordon Ryan, that's his belt up there.

51:20He's a freak. He's amazing.

51:21But he trains 365 days a year.

51:26He does not take breaks off Christmas.

51:32Yeah, he trains every day and he trains like twice a day, three times a

51:35day. It's like that is the only way to be the greatest.

51:39And, you know, and he's obviously a lot bigger than me, but it's not the

51:42best example. But he does that to heavyweight black belts, just humiliates them.

51:47They have he writes down on a piece of paper what he's going to do

51:50to them and hands it to the judges before the fight.

51:52So he's like, I'm going to triangle this guy.

51:55Like that's crazy. And he's doing it to world champions.

51:57Amazing. Like guys who have been like multiple time world champions.

52:01Wow. And he's just predicting what he's going to do.

52:02And then he passes on every submission until he can get him in that.

52:05Like he's having fun, but he's like he's playing with his food, you know, so

52:09this levels to stuff. So to be competent in rolling, you can get there in

52:14a couple of years, depending on how often you train.

52:17Like Bourdain got really serious at 58.

52:20Wow. At 58. That's when he started.

52:22That's when he started. Yeah.

52:24Oh. When I first met him, he wasn't training at all.

52:27When I first met him, he came to the UFC.

52:30His wife was really into the UFC and she was, she had just started doing

52:34jujitsu and she was getting him into the sport and he really got interested in

52:40it. And then she took him to jujitsu classes and like, fuck, this is actually

52:43kind of fascinating. Yeah. And he had never done any kind of athletic things in

52:48his whole life. And then like when he was 60, there's a photo of him

52:53like in his 60s and he's walking down the street with his, he had gotten

52:56divorced and he was dating some new girl.

52:58And he's got the six pack and he looks shredded.

53:01And when I, when I first met him, he was like doughy and he had

53:04a thumb ring and he was like, you know, a chef and, you know, he

53:07was into drinking. And he just became a jujitsu addict and he was training every

53:12fucking day. And sometimes twice a day, he would do a private lesson and they

53:16would take a class every day.

53:18Wow. Yeah. He got a, and then he, he told me he was taken.

53:20He's like, when we were hunting in Montana, he, we were on the ground in

53:25Montana. He wanted to like learn some stuff.

53:28So I was explaining him certain, but like, I'm like, when you go for a

53:31darts, there's a way to get, there's a thing called a Japanese necktie.

53:34And I was explaining to him on the dirt.

53:36I was like, you guys all camoed out doing jujitsu on the ground, but he

53:41was like, he was so interested in it that he was, he was like constantly

53:44asking questions. And he had guys that were in the crew that had also gotten

53:48interested in jujitsu because of him.

53:50So like while he was there filming his show, he also went down and was

53:54training. He found a local jujitsu gym and he went down there and trained while

53:58he was there. He would train everywhere on the road.

54:00Yeah. He would go to like foreign countries and train, like he didn't even speak

54:04the language. And you know, he's just fucking famous guy from TV and he's just

54:08rolling in there with like normal people and getting strangled.

54:1258, man. That's incredible. I have no excuse.

54:15I'm going to start. Yeah, do it.

54:16I want to put it in front of my kid for sure.

54:18Oh, definitely. I mean, as soon as he can do it, I want him to

54:21try, you know, if he likes it or not.

54:23But it's like, I feel like it's one of those things.

54:25It's so good to connect with other people in that way from such a young

54:28age. It gives you confidence.

54:29And then if you, if you love it, if he has a passion for it,

54:33you don't have to worry about him becoming a drug addict or something because you

54:36can't be both. Like, you know, there's a few things where like you can't be

54:39both. You've got to really give that everything.

54:42Also, it becomes like a real source of confidence for kids.

54:45It's if they know that they can fight, like they can avoid fights.

54:50People won't want to fight them because they'll have a reputation.

54:53They can. It's very good to know.

54:55It's also like you can get out of things just by knowing how to fight

54:59because, you know, like what people are doing, what they're not doing.

55:02You don't say anything stupid because you're trying to trick a person into thinking that

55:07you're a tough guy. There's a quiet confidence that comes with these guys.

55:10And also, if something does happen, most people have zero idea of how to fight.

55:16Right. Zero. And they think they're just going to swing and hit you in the

55:19face. And you see all this shit coming way before it happens.

55:22Like, you see them moving their right foot back.

55:25Like, oh, God. Yeah. Like, here we go.

55:27Like, it's like they're playing a game, but they don't even know the rules.

55:32Like, they don't even know the skill.

55:33They don't know anything. But they've seen it on TV, and they think they're going

55:36to be able to pull it off, especially if they're drunk.

55:53Fights on the street are so scary because guys fall and they hit their head.

56:01go out, and they just bang their head off the ground.

56:04Or there's a lot of people out there.

56:06there that'll when you're already out step on your head oh yeah your head you

56:09see that a lot yeah that's i don't understand anyone who has the impulse to

56:15do that right that's crazy to me like if you've won the fight already move

56:18on yeah that's that's scary stuff that's evil one of some people that get red

56:23with rage and they lose their mind and then they wind up in jail for

56:26the rest of their life and then just sitting in a cell going what the

56:29fuck one night drunk doing something stupid and now i'm here forever yeah it's crazy

56:35and there's someone's dead and someone's dead and someone's parents are crying and someone's missing

56:40their father like fuck yeah because he looked at my girlfriend yeah that's crazy i

56:46know people are retarded yeah the best thing about fighting is it teaches you not

56:50to fight very few of my friends that know how to fight have ever been

56:54in street fights it's almost never happens it's just like it's just it's such a

56:59stupid thing to do how many times in your life have you had to use

57:02it like practically in a real life never really never not since i was in

57:07like high school i've been i've never been in a fight fight like an actual

57:10fight since high school i'll avoid them yeah i'm not like if if i know

57:22people always say oh if i could fight i'd fuck people up great and then

57:25they're going to come back and kill you you know and then they're going to

57:33pointless you know i've had situations where i thought i was going to have to

57:37fuck somebody up and i didn't but you have to have self -control you have

57:41to you know you have to be able to know and also like most people

57:44like if they want to fight you all you have to do is kind of

57:47like put your hands up and move a little bit like they're not going to

57:49be able to do anything they'll be swinging and you're just like come on what

57:53are we doing here yeah what are we doing and it's it's the only time

57:57people get hurt is when you engage like you're both swinging at each other if

58:01someone's swinging at you and they don't know what they're doing they have almost no

58:05chance of hurting me like zero unless i'm asleep unless i'm really drunk you have

58:11almost zero chance of hitting me right unless you really know what to do if

58:15you really know how to fight most of those people really know how to fight

59:14guys are just nuts man yeah and you know mental health issues and but fights

59:49like so many different variations and then you add in striking and wrestling and like

59:58watching mma it's the most exciting thing ever for me i like other sports like

1:00:06a good basketball game baseball's hard but to me it's all just downtime unless fights

1:00:13are on right if fights are on i'm not watching anything else like i've been

1:00:16at football games like at ut games with the ufc on my phone sitting there

1:00:21while i'm watching the ufc man i wish i have football envy i my i

1:00:28went to a christian school in ohio and we didn't have a football team and

1:00:30i feel like if you don't like grow up around it in high school you

1:00:34just don't understand like the nuance i understand the rules and i get it but

1:00:37i just i don't know i don't love it like people do and i wish

1:00:40i did i wish it the stakes just i don't understand it i don't understand

1:00:48watching ufc because it's like the stakes are so high right something about one -on

1:00:53-one who's the better person today you know that's you know you can't uh there's

1:01:00like i uh have grown to love it living here my wife is a big

1:01:04football fan and so she got me into it and then i've gone to a

1:01:08bunch of ut games and they're fucking fun man and it's like when someone scores

1:01:13a touchdown everybody wins like the whole team cheer like the whole audience like 80

1:01:18000 people and there's something to that right because like when fighters fight and someone

1:01:24gets knocked out like people cheer and it's exciting but like you know you never

1:01:28know who's like if you're watching justin gaethje fight max holloway i don't know who's

1:01:33for justin gaethje who's for max holloway you look out there like everybody's wearing ut

1:01:37colors right or they're wearing you know oklahoma colors like it's like you've got your

1:01:43colors everybody you've got your outfits everybody's pumped they they cheer when this guy scores

1:01:48they boo and that guy scores it's like more of a team everybody wins together

1:01:52yeah whereas like with mma you know you there's there's it's like you're just watching

1:02:00an individual you're appreciating an individual who's a rare human being type of human being

1:02:05that become a becomes a guy could become an mma world champion that is a

1:02:10truly special human like the amount of dedication and draw and the amount of focus

1:02:15and discipline and the courage that you have to have to get in your fucking

1:02:19underwear And stand there with a cup on, with little tiny pads on your gloves

1:02:23in front of another savage, like another trained killer who's been training for 18 weeks

1:02:29for this one moment. And they bolt the door shut to the cage.

1:02:33And then the referee goes, fighter, you ready?

1:02:35Fighter, you ready? Let's go.

1:02:37And then the whole world is watching.

1:02:39You're surrounded by 20 ,000 people and lights and cheering.

1:02:43And you're trying to keep your shit together.

1:02:46And you're getting kicked. How do you sleep the night before that?

1:02:49That would be my thing.

1:02:50I wouldn't be able to sleep.

1:02:52It's hard. I would always get sick.

1:02:53I would get sick before tournaments because I wasn't sleeping.

1:02:56And I was training really hard.

1:02:58And I didn't even take vitamins back then.

1:02:59I was a dumbass. Because I was young.

1:03:02I stopped fighting when I was 22.

1:03:04But for a lot of these guys, it is hard.

1:03:07It's really hard to just relax.

1:03:09And then they grow to learn how to relax.

1:03:12And then it's really scary.

1:03:13And then it's really hard to beat them because a lot of guys are terrified

1:03:16before they even get. Like Anderson Silva in his prime, he would win fights at

1:03:21the weigh -ins because they would just look at him.

1:03:24And he would be standing there staring at you.

1:03:26And you're like, oh, my God.

1:03:27I have to fight this guy tomorrow.

1:03:28Oh, my. What have I done?

1:03:29Why am I doing this with my life?

1:03:31Imagine doing that stare down Mike Tyson back in the day.

1:03:34Oh, God. That would be the most terrifying, I think.

1:03:35Oh, dude. It was. It was.

1:03:37There would be guys that looked like they were going to faint when the referee

1:03:40was giving him instructions. You know?

1:03:42I remember he fought Bruce Seldon.

1:03:43And Bruce Seldon, who was a beast, man.

1:03:46He's a fucking tank of a man.

1:03:48And he looked like he was going to faint during the stare down.

1:03:52I can't imagine. Yeah. Yeah.

1:03:54He was the scariest of all time.

1:03:56He was. He was absolutely the scariest of all time.

1:03:58The scariest boxer that I've ever seen in my life.

1:04:01And there was a period of time between, like, 1986 and, like, probably, like, around

1:04:061990 where he was just fucking running through everybody.

1:04:09It was so. You would buy the pay -per -view knowing that the guy was

1:04:13going to get knocked out and hoping that you'd get your money's worth.

1:04:17Because the pay -per -view is, like, whatever it was, 50 bucks or something.

1:04:20You know, like, if it's, like, 30 seconds, you're like, aw, that's bullshit.

1:04:25People would get upset that the pay -per -view was so quick.

1:04:29But, I mean, that's what you were signing up for.

1:04:32And those kind of guys, I mean, when you've got a guy that's got every

1:04:37box checked, discipline, focus, training, genetics, everything all together, mindset.

1:04:46Right. He would beat guys, like, long before they ever got in there.

1:04:50Because they knew that they were fighting this demon, this guy that just was so

1:04:55much better than everybody else.

1:04:56And there's no way you could catch up to him.

1:04:58No. Is it true about his – wasn't it, like, his trainer died and then

1:05:04kind of he lost the whole – Yeah.

1:05:06Well, his trainer was Cus D 'Amato.

1:05:09And Cus D 'Amato was a legendary figure in boxing.

1:05:12He had trained Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres.

1:05:18He trained, like, a lot of, like, legit world champions.

1:05:22And he was also a hypnotist.

1:05:25And he adopted – Wait, what?

1:05:27Yeah, he was a hypnotist.

1:05:28Yeah. Wow. Well, he was really into the mental side of fighting.

1:05:31He was more – almost like as much of a psychologist as he was a

1:05:36boxing trainer. It was all about tempering their mind and getting them ready.

1:05:40Like, he would tell Mike Tyson, you don't exist.

1:05:42Only the task exists. He would say crazy shit to him.

1:05:46And he adopted him when he was 13.

1:05:48So Mike was 13 and he came from Bedford -Stuy in Brooklyn.

1:05:53It was a horrible neighborhood.

1:05:54So his whole life was, like, crime and violence and no love and just terrible.

1:06:00And then all of a sudden this man took him under his wing who was

1:06:03also a legendary figure in boxing.

1:06:05Legendary. Like, he was, like – he was the guru.

1:06:09And, you know, he basically – it was like the perfect storm.

1:06:13And then he was also – his manager was this guy Jim Jacobs.

1:06:17And Jim Jacobs was not just a manager.

1:06:19He was an historian of boxing.

1:06:21And he had this incredible library of all the great fighters.

1:06:25So he would watch film, you know, like fucking – Right.

1:06:29He, like, have a projection screen.

1:06:31And he would watch film of, like, Jack Johnson and Stanley Ketchel and, you know,

1:06:35Sandy Sadler and all these great fighters from back in the day.

1:06:39Roberto Duran. He would sit there and absorb all these amazing fights.

1:06:43And when you can watch – like, that's one of the great things about today,

1:06:47like, especially with MMA. Like, if you look at the fights from 1993 and the

1:06:52fights from 2026, the skill level is, like, magnitudes greater.

1:06:57Because all these guys have grown up watching all these fights now.

1:07:02Because from the time that MMA existed, it was on television.

1:07:06You could watch it on YouTube after that.

1:07:08And it was like there was always fights that you could see.

1:07:11So you could see what guys were doing.

1:07:13So you had an understanding of the level.

1:07:15So kids would grow up imitating their favorite fighters.

1:07:19You know, they'd grow up, you know, imitating John Jones and imitating Cain Velasquez and

1:07:23all these guys. And you would – you could absorb a lot just by seeing

1:07:28the elite level of these guys.

1:07:30And Mike Tyson was one of the only guys back then that had that ability.

1:07:35Interesting. Because he had this immense library of the greatest fights of all time.

1:07:39And so he would be training with one of the greatest trainers that ever lived,

1:07:44who was probably the greatest psychological trainer that ever lived.

1:07:46Also, the guy was hypnotizing him at 13, programming him to be this destruction machine.

1:07:52And then he was watching fights.

1:07:53So he was watching all these guys, Jack Johnson and all these, like, great old

1:07:57school champions and Jack Dempsey.

1:08:00And, like, and he just absorbed it all.

1:08:03Incredible. And he would get in that ring with fucking no socks on and no

1:08:07robe and just, like, a throwback.

1:08:09He was, like, one – he was, like, he absorbed the energy of those old

1:08:14great fighters, the Sugar Ray Robinsons and the hardcore old school guys who would fight,

1:08:20like, once a week, once every two weeks.

1:08:23Dude, is that how often they were doing it?

1:08:24Oh, they were fought so many times.

1:08:26I think before Sugar Ray Robinson ever lost a fight, he was 90 and 0.

1:08:31Something crazy like that. Wow.

1:08:33Yeah. Some 90. Fucking crazy.

1:08:37Just crazy. That's wild. And to be able to watch that kind of stuff when

1:08:43you're young, you absorb it.

1:08:45Sure. It's like kids that play instruments now.

1:08:48Sure. I mean, you'll see an 8 -year -old online who's better than any drummer

1:08:52in the 70s. Right. It's crazy just how quickly they can get better now.

1:08:57Oh, yeah. Because they have access to everyone all the time.

1:09:37If you're a basketball player, you can go back and watch Jordan.

1:09:39You can watch Larry Bird.

1:09:43You can watch all these great basketball players and see what they're doing.

1:09:47Whereas if you were young, you know, in the 60s or 70s, like you only

1:09:50got to see the people you saw.

1:09:52Yeah. You were as good as the people you were around, which is why it

1:09:55was so important to be a part of, like, a great program in high school

1:09:58and college. Because then you'd be around, like, and then you'd go to the States

1:10:01and see how these guys are doing.

1:10:02Oh, these guys are better than us.

1:10:04Like, I remember that from wrestling.

1:10:06Like, the only time when I was wrestling in high school, the only time you

1:10:08get to see, like, really good guys, you'd go somewhere else.

1:10:10Like, I went to school in Newton, Newton South High School, and we had good

1:10:15wrestlers in our program. And I thought they were good until I would go to

1:10:18the States. And you'd go, oh, my God, these fucking guys.

1:10:21These kids are going to camps every year.

1:10:23They were wrestling 365 days a year.

1:10:25They're, like, obsessed with it.

1:10:27And then if you go to, like, Iowa or somewhere like that, like, good Lord,

1:10:31it's a fucking religion there.

1:10:32I mean, they've been doing that since they were babies.

1:10:35You know, it's like you absorb what you see, and your brain rises to the

1:10:43level of the competition that you see.

1:10:45The last time I was really into a boxer was Loma.

1:10:48Oh, man. I love watching him.

1:10:50Oh, dude. He's got a cool story, too.

1:10:51Didn't his dad make him do ballet for a while?

1:10:53Ukrainian dance for two years.

1:10:55Pulled him out of boxing for two years.

1:10:58That guy moves like it doesn't look real.

1:11:00Right. Like, people shouldn't be able to move like that.

1:11:02The Matrix, they call him.

1:11:03Beautiful. Yeah. Yeah, he would do footwork that no one had even considered doing before.

1:11:08The movement, the slipping to the side and the angles and his ability to change

1:11:12direction was crazy because he would be here and then he'd be here and then

1:11:16you're swinging and he's here and he's hitting you.

1:11:18And he also was way smaller than everybody.

1:11:21He was way smaller than everybody.

1:11:23Like, he was supposed to be a 126 -pound fighter, and he went all the

1:11:26way up to the 140 -pound division.

1:11:28Are there, like, a lot of younger guys doing that sort of style now coming

1:11:32up, or is that like a one -off?

1:11:34It's kind of a one -off.

1:11:35Usyk does it, but Usyk was trained by Lomachenko's father.

1:11:39Oh, okay. They were trained by the same guy.

1:11:41Okay. Usyk is essentially like a heavyweight Lomachenko.

1:11:44Wow. That's why he moves so much.

1:11:46It's dangerous. That guy's a freak.

1:11:48He's a freak. He's a pleasure to watch, watching that guy.

1:11:53I mean, he's beating guys that are so much bigger than him.

1:11:55When he beat Tyson Fury, Tyson Fury was like 280 pounds, and he's like a

1:12:01cruiserweight. He was really a 200 -pound guy that blew up to compete against heavyweights.

1:12:06He's much smaller than those guys, but he was so fast and so, and just

1:12:11his pattern recognition, his understanding of boxing is just elite, like so many levels above

1:12:17everybody else. And he's 38.

1:12:19Like, at 38, you're supposed to be done.

1:12:25Amazing. Also, clean life, clean living, like serious Christian, like very, very religious, you know,

1:12:38Yeah. That Soviet -style discipline, the Ukrainian discipline, like those guys, like their program over

1:12:43there, like you can see it like in Dmitry Bival and a lot of the

1:12:46other like Soviet -style boxers, they have like a very comprehensive technical program that they

1:12:52put their fighters under. There's a style, like Bival's the best example of that style.

1:12:58It's such a fucking difficult style because it's so movement -based.

1:13:02And a lot of like American fighters were kind of rigid in their footwork and

1:13:06moving forward just trying to land the big shots.

1:13:08And like Bival's just moving around you all the time, popping you and like, ugh.

1:13:13Yeah. Sort of like the Dagestani guys in the MMA, same thing.

1:13:17Oh, yeah. You're not going to beat those guys because it's all they do.

1:13:20Bro, they're in - Eat and breathe it.

1:13:22They're in Muay Thai now.

1:15:17Oh. Yeah. Yeah, he was one of the all -time greats, if not the all

1:15:21-time great. He was different than everybody else.

1:15:24And he was a heavyweight that could submit you.

1:15:26He could knock you out.

1:15:27He was fast. He wasn't big.

1:15:29I mean, he was, like, 5 '11".

1:15:30Very unassuming looking. Yeah. You wouldn't know he was the most dangerous guy in the

1:15:33world. Yeah, like a little belly fat, a little, he didn't give a fuck what

1:15:36he looked like. He was all about how he could perform.

1:15:39Right. You know, and he was a part of, like, that era where MMA emerged.

1:15:46And in Japan, it was so much bigger than it was in America.

1:15:50During the Pride days when Fedor was running shit, there was 90 ,000 people in

1:15:55those arenas. Whoa. Yeah. They were doing, like, the Tokyo Superdome.

1:15:59They were doing these gigantic arenas.

1:16:02And, like, everyone was a fan in the country.

1:16:05And then it all went away because the Yakuza was involved and there was a

1:16:10big scandal. And, you know, like, MMA was bigger in Japan than it was anywhere

1:16:15in the world. And it just kind of, like, fizzled out.

1:16:18Did you ever go to any of those in Japan?

1:16:19I went to a UFC once in Japan.

1:16:21We did one UFC in Japan.

1:16:22And I went there. It was really cool.

1:16:24It was just, I was just really happy to be in Japan for a fight

1:16:28because, you know, I've been such a fan of Japanese martial artists and Japanese martial

1:16:33arts, period. And, like, I have a, I mean, I have Miyamoto Musashi tattooed on

1:16:37my arm. But being in there in Japan was, like, it was interesting because they

1:16:41were so educated. Like, they were really quiet while the fights were going on.

1:16:45But then when something would happen, even something really technical, like somebody passing the guard,

1:16:50they would go, oh, and they would all clap.

1:16:52Like, I was like, whoa, this is interesting.

1:16:55Like, it was like you could hear each corner yelling instructions.

1:16:59Like, you didn't hear the crowd at all.

1:17:01Wow. And there's 16 ,000 people in there.

1:17:03That's cool. It was wild.

1:17:04Yeah. It was a completely different kind of audience.

1:17:07Like, very respectful, very appreciative, and very knowledgeable.

1:17:11It was cool. Do you think if you didn't do what you did, would you

1:17:15rather watch, like, UFC in person or would you watch it at home?

1:17:21In person's the best. You want to be there.

1:17:24You want to feel the crowd.

1:17:25But I would want to be there where I sit.

1:17:27Like, I'm super spoiled. Yeah, you've got the best seat in the house.

1:17:30Yeah, I'm like, I could reach up and grab the cage.

1:17:32It's right there. Like, I'm so spoiled.

1:17:36But, you know, if you're in the bleeders, if you're in, like, the nosebleeds, you're

1:17:40probably better off watching it at home, honestly.

1:17:42Because then you get the commentary.

1:17:44You get to see replays.

1:17:46You get to see, you know, like, close up.

1:17:49If you've got a big TV at home, you get to see everything.

1:17:51I just sat close for the first time.

1:17:53I went to the Paddy Gaethje fight.

1:17:55Oh, did you? It was amazing.

1:17:56That was a good one.

1:17:57It was amazing, dude. But, yeah, it's definitely different hearing the sound.

1:18:00Oh, yeah. It's like a whole, when you hear, like, bone on bone, you're like,

1:18:03whoa. Well, my favorite was during the pandemic, we had fights at the UFC Apex

1:18:08with no crowd. It was insane.

1:18:12It was so, because we had world championship fights with no crowd.

1:18:15That's crazy. There was maybe, like, 50, 100 people in the room.

1:18:19Wow. It was, like, mostly just staff of the UFC, the trainers of the fighters,

1:18:23and some of the other fighters in the audience, and some friends in the audience.

1:18:26And that's it. And the UFC Apex has a smaller ring, too, a smaller cage.

1:18:31So it's like, I think it's like, I want to say it's 40 % smaller.

1:18:35It's a lot smaller. Really?

1:18:37Yeah. I didn't know that.

1:18:38Yeah, it's smaller. How would that affect a fight?

1:18:40A lot. Practically, really? You can't move as much.

1:18:42There's not as much distance to get away.

1:18:45You know, so a guy who likes to, like, move around a lot and get

1:18:47away from people. Like, I saw Francis Ngannou versus Stipe Miocic when Francis won the

1:18:52title in the Apex with no crowd.

1:18:55That's crazy. And when Francis hits things, it's like hearing a baseball bat hitting a

1:19:01pumpkin. It's just whomp! Yikes.

1:19:03And you're right there. You hear them breathing.

1:19:06You hear the grunts when they get hit, you know.

1:19:09Right. You hear the coaches yelling out, hands up, hands up, move, move, move.

1:19:14You know, hit them with the one, one, two.

1:19:15They're yelling out instructions, and it's like there's no one else there.

1:19:19It's silent. Wow. It's amazing.

1:19:21So that's the way. Oh, that's my favorite.

1:19:23Cool. But there's something about an amazing crowd, you know, like when you're watching a

1:19:28big world title fight, you know, like in Vegas or in the Madison Square Garden.

1:19:33It's an incredible place. It's just the history of the place.

1:19:36You feel it when you're in Madison Square Garden.

1:19:39But my favorite is the Apex.

1:19:41How are you feeling about this White House card?

1:19:44That's insane. Makes me a little nervous.

1:19:46I don't know if it's the best idea.

1:19:48Yeah, it seems like it would open some room for some tomfoolery.

1:19:53It seems like it. Yeah.

1:19:56The card is not what they wanted it to be, for sure.

1:19:59They wanted it to be like all world titles.

1:20:02But, you know, matchmakers have a very difficult task.

1:20:06It's very hard to find people that aren't injured, that are ready at this particular

1:20:12time. Because the brutal aspect of the sport is that guys are always hurt.

1:20:18They're always training hurt. They're always getting hurt.

1:20:21They fight hurt. There's always – no one – very rarely is anyone going into

1:20:25the octagon 100%. Sure. There's always something going on.

1:20:29Guys are – they're dealing with staph infections in camp and they're taking antibiotics and

1:20:33it fucks with your endurance.

1:20:34And maybe they've got a muscle pull or a knee that's fucked up.

1:20:38And when Francis Ngannou fought Cyril Gan, he blew his ACL out.

1:20:43So he had to wrap his leg up.

1:20:44And he had one leg.

1:20:45And he beat him with one leg.

1:20:47That's crazy. Crazy. Guys have fought with broken hands, you know.

1:20:51Alex Pereira, he's beating guys with a broken foot.

1:20:54He fights with a broken foot.

1:20:56Just stoic standing there. Knows his foot's broken.

1:20:59Doesn't give a fuck. He fought with a bad knee.

1:21:01His knee needed surgery. Like – Like – There's a fight that he fought, Yuri

1:21:05Prohaska, where he's on top of Yuri, they stop the fight, and he does a

1:21:09forward roll to get off of him after he knocked on him because he couldn't

1:21:12stand on his left leg.

1:21:14I didn't know that. Was that like a known thing while the fight was happening?

1:21:18No. Oh. No, he had surgery after the fight.

1:21:20I remember that fight. That's crazy.

1:21:21Yeah, he had surgery after the fight.

1:21:23Pernod is really big in our house because Brazil, right?

1:21:25Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Those Brazilians, man, they love each other.

1:21:29It's crazy. My wife, she doesn't even care about MMA that much, but if there's

1:21:32a Brazilian fight, she's all about it.

1:21:34Oh, yeah. Very, very proud people.

1:21:36Yeah. And it's also like Brazil's where it all started.

1:21:39They were having MMA fights in Brazil in the 1930s.

1:21:42Really? Oh, yeah. Elio Gracie, who's really the founder of all this shit, he's the

1:21:48father of like the Gracie clan, the Gracie family is like the greatest story in

1:21:53the history of martial arts.

1:21:54That one family has changed martial arts forever, and it really changed it because of

1:22:00Carlos Gracie and Elio Gracie and Carlson Gracie.

1:22:03These three Gracies who competed in these no -rules fights, they didn't have time limits

1:22:10back then, no gloves, no nothing.

1:22:12And they were fighting in giant crowds in Brazil in the 1930s, 1940s, and they

1:22:19were figuring things out that nobody had figured out before.

1:22:21They figured out, they took techniques from Judo.

1:22:25Like, Judo was mostly about throws, but there was some submissions.

1:22:30And so they concentrated only on the submissions.

1:22:33And they created Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu.

1:22:37Like, Jiu -Jitsu, which was a Japanese martial art.

1:22:39Right. But Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu is far more technical than Japanese Jiu -Jitsu.

1:22:44And even Japanese guys now train Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu.

1:22:47I was going to say, is there any, are there purists that only do the

1:22:50Japanese style still, or not really?

1:22:51You can't really compete. Oh, okay.

1:22:54I mean, you could because everybody kind of knows everything now because Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu

1:22:58has made its way into every other sport.

1:23:01Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu has made its way into Russian Sambo, which is another combat sport,

1:23:06which is also elite. But Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu changed the game.

1:23:09And the Gracie family changed everything forever.

1:23:13And, you know, the guy who fought in the UFC, Hoist, he wasn't even the

1:23:17best guy in the family.

1:23:18He told everybody, my brother Hickson kills me.

1:23:21Hickson was the man. Like, Hickson was above and beyond everyone back then.

1:23:26He was a guy who did yoga.

1:23:28He was meditating. He did this crazy thing with his stomach where he would do

1:23:32this breathing where his stomach would suck in.

1:23:34And he was like a real freak.

1:23:36And he was undefeated. Like, nobody could touch him.

1:23:40He would go and do these seminars.

1:23:43So he'd teach a seminar and teach it to all these black belts.

1:23:47And then he would roll with all of them nonstop and just tap out everybody.

1:23:52Everybody. World champions. They'd all be like, ah, this is a bunch of hype.

1:23:55And they'd go in there.

1:23:57They'd all get arm barred.

1:23:58They'd all get leg locked.

1:23:59It was crazy. He was so much better than everybody else.

1:24:02And so they wanted Hoist to win because Hickson also was, like, pretty jacked.

1:24:08And he was, like, really fit.

1:24:10And he was really into strength and conditioning and, like I said, yoga.

1:24:14He was incredibly flexible. Like, he could stand there and do the splits and, like,

1:24:18hold his leg up in the air on a balance bar.

1:24:20Is he the one that wrote that book?

1:24:22Yeah. Yeah, I read that.

1:24:23It's awesome. Yeah. And he had that documentary.

1:24:25There's a great documentary called Choke.

1:24:27Phenomenal documentary about his rise through Japan Valley Tudo.

1:24:32And then he was the guy that they based the first Pride event on.

1:24:36Oh, okay. He was the champion of the first Pride event.

1:24:39He was the guy that the whole thing was based on because he was huge

1:24:42in Japan. I mean, he was a superstar in Japan.

1:24:45But he was the champion of the family.

1:24:47And they wanted Hoist to do it because Hoist was, like, smaller and he would

1:24:51show that jiu -jitsu was about technique.

1:24:54That makes sense. And the plan was if Hoist ever got beat, throw in Hickson.

1:24:59Oh, okay. Then everybody's fucked.

1:25:00But Hickson, like, his brother Horian started the UFC and Horian and Hickson had friction

1:25:07and Horian really couldn't control Hickson.

1:25:10And so they were like, let's put Hoist in and if we need to call

1:25:13on Hickson, we'll call the boogeyman.

1:25:15Nice. He was the boogeyman.

1:25:17Remember the guy, I think it was UFC one, who had the one glove, the

1:25:20one boxing glove? Yeah, Art Jemerson.

1:25:21Yeah. What was that about?

1:25:23Well, I think he decided he wanted to be able to hold on to people

1:25:26and he wanted to punch them with his right hand.

1:25:29Weird tactic. Well, no one knew what the fuck they were doing back then.

1:25:33Michael Jackson, dude. Everybody had this idea of what fighting was and they didn't really

1:25:39know until they got taken down.

1:25:41There he is. Oh, it was his left hand.

1:25:43So that's interesting. So I guess he wanted to pop him with the jab.

1:25:47Hoist just fucking put it to that guy.

1:25:50Amazing. But Hoist was doing something that nobody had seen before.

1:25:53And that one event when he was doing that to people, it changed everything.

1:25:58It changed my opinion of martial arts.

1:26:00So I immediately started taking jujitsu.

1:26:03I was like, oh, my God.

1:26:04You were in taekwondo? I started in taekwondo and then I did kickboxing for a

1:26:08while. And then as soon as I saw the UFC, I immediately started taking jujitsu.

1:26:13Yeah. I was like, oh, God.

1:26:14I don't. And then when I started taking it, I was so cocky.

1:26:17I was like, I know how to fight.

1:26:18And then I took classes.

1:26:19I was just getting manhandled and mauled and tapped left and right.

1:26:22I was like, oh, my God.

1:26:23I'm a beginner. Yeah. This is so humiliating.

1:26:25And I was like, I've got to get good at this.

1:26:27I couldn't believe how helpless I was.

1:26:30I was running around thinking I was a badass and I was just a fool.

1:26:35Yeah. I'll humble you real quick.

1:26:36Oh, so humbling. I've gone through that.

1:26:37I did it for maybe a couple months.

1:26:40And I never made it past the hump.

1:26:42I should probably try again.

1:26:43Get a trainer. Get a guy who can do drills with you.

1:26:46That's really huge. If you can get someone to do drills with you and just

1:26:51go over on a one -on -one basis, the finer aspects of it, and just

1:26:58do drills and drills, drills over and over again.

1:27:00And then slowly start working your way into group classes.

1:27:03Yeah. That's the key. I think the thing is with, you know, if you go

1:27:07to a boxing class, Muay Thai class, you get to get some frustration out.

1:27:10Right. Because you're hitting something and it kind of feels good on your drive home.

1:27:14You feel like, I just beat the shit out of that bag, you know.

1:27:16Yeah. But then you do.

1:27:18You roll with. somebody who's really good and you go home and you're more frustrated

1:27:20but the first time you tap someone it's like it's such a revelation like oh

1:27:26my god i got an arm bar oh my god i got a triangle like

1:27:30the first time you actually catch someone something and they tap i'll never forget that

1:27:34feeling i was like wow and then you have to just trust the process trust

1:27:39the process of showing up and and realizing it is a tall mountain to climb

1:27:44it's you're not going to get there quick it is a it's a weird thing

1:27:48to do with your body your body doesn't know what to do with it that's

1:27:51why drilling is so important when you're drilling you're going over the motions without resistance

1:27:55so your body sort of gets programmed how to shift switch switch your hips and

1:28:01how to catch the arm and how to pull your body back and secure it

1:28:04with your legs and all the different things that you have to do where if

1:28:07you're doing just live sparring all the time you you're not going to learn because

1:28:11you're all panicking and tight you got to be able to like train your body

1:28:15to move a certain way so it becomes automatic and is there a way to

1:28:19do it where you can stay relatively injury free while you're learning or is it's

1:28:25like that's just part of the kind of part of it yeah i was gonna

1:28:28say it's kind of part of it yeah everybody just sort of assumes you're gonna

1:28:31eventually get hurt in one way or another you're gonna fuck your knee up or

1:28:35fuck your ankle up or whatever right but the best way is to find good

1:28:39training partners don't train with any wild people because some people just jank on things

1:28:43and those are dangerous the really dangerous people are like blue belts who are really

1:28:48strong who are just like really spaz out on you like sure kind of avoid

1:28:52those folks because they could blow your knee out accidentally yeah you know i've seen

1:28:56that a lot like i know people that are really good that won't roll with

1:29:00people that are spazes they're like i'm not i definitely ran into a couple of

1:29:03the guys that are like they just wanted to choke out casey dutton of course

1:29:07like come on man i just started of course i used to get that when

1:29:10i was on fear factor a lot of guys want to choke out the fear

1:29:13factor guy yeah but you know that's just part of the fun like for dane

1:29:18like he was 58 year old white belt nuts wow if that guy did it

1:29:22fucking kind of anybody can do it what belt did he get to he might

1:29:27have got to purple uh he definitely got to blue i don't know if he

1:29:31got to purple but he won tournaments wow he competed in tournaments you know you

1:29:36know i remember when he first started doing he's like i'd really like to compete

1:29:39in some age appropriate tournaments i was trying to talk him out of it i

1:29:42was like don't get hurt man we need you out there yeah he was obsessed

1:29:47if he could do it like that just goes to show you a guy with

1:29:51no athletic experience not a worker didn't train didn't didn't do any working out wasn't

1:29:57a runner didn't lift weights nothing and then at 58 he's like all right i'm

1:30:01gonna get good at this that's amazing yeah good for him man it's awesome well

1:30:05he was uh a guy that had had substance abuse problems in his past and

1:30:10the thing about being an addict is if you can focus whatever that thing is

1:30:15and get addicted to something really good you you can you can really excel sure

1:30:21for whatever weird reason also there's a flip side so people that are addicted to

1:30:27a sport or a thing and they get really good at a thing and then

1:30:30they become drug addicts that same thing can kind of hijack your brain and then

1:30:34all you're doing is like chasing meth all day right i've seen that happen too

1:30:38for sure yeah yeah i should get back into it it's a fun thing to

1:30:43do it's good for your head too because it's the hardest thing you'll ever do

1:30:46it's so hard because you're essentially what you're the game you're playing is i kill

1:30:53you or you kill me right so when a guy gets your back and gets

1:30:56your rear naked choke and you tap you're essentially saying you just killed me all

1:31:01right thank you for not killing me i give up and then when you do

1:31:04it to him he's saying that to you yeah so it's so hard that the

1:31:08rest of your life is easy right everything else becomes easy well all the stress

1:31:12of fame success and hollywood and the bullshit it's nothing compared to some dude mounting

1:31:18you trying to get in your ego you're trapped in an arm triangle like trying

1:31:22to get your hand down to protect yourself it's way harder and that that makes

1:31:29the rest of your life easier if you can choose what's hard in your life

1:31:34you'll be way better off find a thing that's way more difficult on your mind

1:31:39way more difficult on your body way more difficult on your spirit than this other

1:31:44thing that you do so it'll like make that other thing like easier to tolerate

1:31:47yeah and stay humble too yeah oh yeah super humble you're not gonna think you're

1:31:53cool for being able to say some lines some people get well that's the other

1:31:57thing right you get really intoxicated with everybody kissing your ass oh yeah easy easy

1:32:03trap we've all seen that we've all seen actors are just like inflated oh for

1:32:07sure yeah yeah i'm a little blessed in the way that i've never thought i

1:32:11was very great at anything um i enjoy doing the things but i've not you

1:32:15know like never really i'm never good enough for myself kind of hard on myself

1:32:19a little bit but i've seen it for sure if if you're waiting for someone

1:32:23else to validate you once they do you're screwed right because you're gonna believe it

1:32:28right you know what i mean yeah so well there's the problem of being a

1:32:32star is that like all these people need you and the world their world of

1:32:37the show revolves around you yeah so they're all like you know kind of kissing

1:32:41your ass and reverent towards you it's like it's it's a little weird yeah yeah

1:32:46that and that's new for me too you know i'd never been anything that was

1:32:50like a massive hit before yellowstone and now with this new show now it's a

1:32:54hit and i'm the number one on the call sheet which is very new and

1:32:58so i'm like a you know i'm an asset to them in a different way

1:33:01um it'll be interesting navigating that they'll probably try to talk you out of doing

1:33:06jiu -jitsu yeah i probably have to sign something that i won't you know i'm

1:33:10not a lot of like ski there's a lot of things because of the insurance

1:33:13like if i get hurt and production has to shut down it's a lot of

1:33:17money for them so yeah that makes sense yeah i don't know if that's one

1:33:21of them though but it's like yeah skiing don't ask it's funny because horseback riding

1:33:24usually is and i have to do that for the show that's the most dangerous

1:33:28yeah horseback riding scares the shit out of me dude it's me too it was

1:33:32not It didn't come natural.

1:33:34That's not like a thing that I'm naturally good at or had done before Yellowstone.

1:33:38My oldest daughter did it for a little bit in California, and she fell a

1:33:41couple of times. And one time she hurt her wrist really bad, and I was

1:33:44like, please stop. Don't do this.

1:33:46Because she was doing those things where you'd like jump over stuff.

1:33:49Oh, that's so dangerous. Because they stop just shy of that thing, and you go

1:33:53flying. Right. Her friend, she had a good friend that was really into it, and

1:33:57they started doing it together.

1:33:58And I was like, please don't.

1:34:00And she fell a couple times, and she was okay, but one time she really

1:34:02hurt her wrist. And I was like, please stop.

1:34:05Because your wrist, they can fix.

1:34:07Your neck, you get like Christopher Reeves, you know?

1:34:11Oof. I think about Christopher Reeves every time I get on a horse.

1:34:13I believe it. I wish I didn't.

1:34:15That was what he did, right?

1:34:17He was doing the jumping thing, right?

1:34:18Was it? I believe so.

1:34:20Yeah. Yeah. Terrible. I just don't, I don't, yeah, I don't get it.

1:34:24Do you ride motorcycles? Nope.

1:34:26No, I don't either. Almost did.

1:34:27Almost did. Taking lessons. Me and a couple of the other guys that worked on

1:34:31the crew at Fear Factor, we all took motorcycle lessons together.

1:34:35We were all talking about it.

1:34:36And so we took motorcycle safety courses, you know, you're basically riding like, it's kind

1:34:41of like a dirt bike, and they teach you how to, you know, shift and

1:34:44all this stuff. And I kind of got into it.

1:34:45I was like, ooh, this is really fun.

1:34:46And then three of my friends had motorcycle accidents, like within a short time period.

1:34:54One of them wiped out, fucked up his shoulder.

1:34:57The other one got hit by a car, broke his leg.

1:34:59And then the other one was actually someone saw someone.

1:35:03It wasn't an actual motorcycle accident.

1:35:05He was there when some guy got rear -ended by a car that wasn't paying

1:35:09attention, just plowed into him and sent him flying and fucked this guy up.

1:35:13And I was like, no, no, no, no, no, no, I'm not doing that.

1:35:17I had a bike for a couple months in LA, and I went on a

1:35:21ride. And, you know, it's like one of those things, you have to have the

1:35:24bug. You're like, either have it or you don't.

1:35:25I was trying to get the bug, because I wanted that to be a part

1:35:27of my identity. You know what I mean?

1:35:29I wanted to be a guy who rode motorcycles.

1:35:31So I rode up the Pacific Coast Highway, and I was kind of riding up

1:35:34through, like, Ojai and going around this corner, you know, this sort of, like, cliffside,

1:35:40and that thing where if you stare at something, that's where you're going to go.

1:35:44And I just kind of was, like, zoned out, and I almost ate shit right

1:35:47into the side of this cliff.

1:35:48And I was alone. Like, if I would have done it, it would have been

1:35:50forever until anyone figured out, like, what had happened to me.

1:35:54You know, and I kind of, it was a really, really close call, and I

1:35:56got off the bike, and I kind of sat there for a minute, and I

1:35:58was like, yeah. And I don't love it enough to die this way.

1:36:01You know what I mean?

1:36:02I don't need this in my life, and I never did it again.

1:36:04I have friends that have never had a problem.

1:36:06I have friends that ride bikes that have never had a problem.

1:36:09I think if I lived in Montana, I might do it, because there's just not

1:36:13that much traffic. No, but my 70 -year -old neighbor just hit a deer.

1:36:17Oh. Seven years old on his, like, one of the BMW, like, adventure bikes.

1:36:21Ooh. And he was going 70 on the highway and hit a deer.

1:36:25Yeah. And he's fine, dude.

1:36:27This guy's a tank. How old was he?

1:36:2970. Whoa. Killed the deer.

1:36:32He had road rash everywhere, and he was kind of, like, you know, on the

1:36:34couch for a few weeks.

1:36:35And he's fine? Dude, he is a tank.

1:36:37This guy, they make them different out there, dude.

1:36:40He's my next -door neighbor.

1:36:41He's amazing. Shout out, Steve.

1:36:43Wow. He's got a range in his backyard to 500 yards.

1:36:47Oh, wow. And has every firearm imaginable.

1:36:51And things you didn't even know they made.

1:36:52And so any time I can just, you know, ride over there in the side

1:36:55-by -side, we grab a few and go down and shoot in the back.

1:36:57Oh, that's nice. That's cool.

1:36:59Yeah. Yeah, you find people like that in Montana.

1:37:01Oh, yeah. Yeah. He's the real deal.

1:37:03Wow, but 70 years old, hitting a deer is crazy on a bike.

1:39:51I mean, you look at a 400 -inch elk, like some of those antlers that

1:39:56are out there. Imagine that that grows in a couple of months.

1:39:59It's bone. It's crazy. And they fight to the death with it.

1:40:02Crazy. We find elk that have been killed by other elk.

1:40:06It happens all the time.

1:40:07Have you hunted in Montana?

1:40:08Yeah. Not elk. I've hunted mule deer in Montana and pheasant the time I went

1:40:14with Bourdain. I've never done elk until I moved up there.

1:40:17I started hunting whitetail when I was like 10, like really young, because we have

1:40:21big whitetail in Ohio. And I thought hunting elk would be similar, and boy, was

1:40:26I mistaken. Oh, it is.

1:40:28Were you bow hunting or rifle hunting?

1:40:30I've done both, but my first was a bow hunt.

1:40:33And we went out there.

1:40:34We were camping out there.

1:40:35Me and I just made friends with the contractor that built my house in Montana,

1:40:38and he took me. We went public land around Dillon, Montana.

1:40:43And we went for a week, and I had to tap out day four.

1:40:46Like I couldn't, my legs stopped working.

1:40:48I was like, I didn't know I had, it was like this.

1:40:50So the next year I went, I was like prepared for it, but I didn't

1:40:52know, man, you really got to go for it.

1:40:54Oh, you got to get in shape.

1:40:55Yeah. I do a lot of shit before September.

1:40:59I do, I have this crazy routine that I do on an airdyne bike.

1:41:03I do these Tabatas on an airdyne bike where you sprint for 20 seconds.

1:41:07Oh, yeah. You rest for 10, you sprint for 20 seconds.

1:41:09The worst. And all I'm doing is thinking about getting over a hill, getting over

1:41:13a hill to get a shot.

1:41:14I mean, and then I do like box step ups.

1:41:17I do all these different things with weighted vests and farmer's carries with fucking heavy

1:41:22kettlebells. All I'm doing is just trying to condition my legs.

1:41:25Yeah. You have to, like those mountains are brutal.

1:41:28There's no mountains here for me to practice on.

1:41:31Right. But in California, I used to run hills with my dog.

1:41:34Yeah. And you're at elevation, which makes it even harder.

1:41:35Oh, yeah. And a weird thing people wouldn't expect, like just, you know, makes it

1:41:40even worse. You get up in the morning, it's zero degrees.

1:41:43Middle of the day, it's 50, 60.

1:41:45And you're hiking all day.

1:41:47So it's like, how do you dress for that?

1:41:48You have to dress to be cold.

1:41:50Yeah. Like once you start walking, you have to be cold.

1:41:53Yeah. Like you got to get down to your base layer and walk cold.

1:41:57And then if you ever have to stop, then you put it on.

1:41:59And the other key, merino wool.

1:42:02That's the key. Because wool is different than cotton.

1:42:05If your cotton gets wet and then you're sweaty and then you get cold, you're

1:42:10fucked. Right. But wool's not like that.

1:42:13Merino wool is the best.

1:42:15Yeah. Because like if you have especially a base layer, because when you're sweating, it

1:42:19kind of keeps you a little cool.

1:42:21And then if you get cold, it doesn't feel cold.

1:42:25Yeah. Because it's not synthetic.

1:42:27It's organic. Makes sense. Yeah.

1:42:29It's a weird fiber. Yeah.

1:42:31We used to walk to the deer stand kind of in half of our stuff,

1:42:35keep the other half in a pack.

1:42:36And then like once I got in the tree stand, I'd put everything else on

1:42:38so that you wouldn't, you know, the sweat wouldn't freeze to you.

1:42:41That's hard. Deer hunting in a tree stand is fucking hard.

1:42:45It's like a silent retreat and you're freezing.

1:42:47Yeah. You're freezing and you're sitting up there waiting for a deer to walk by.

1:42:51And then you're so cold that when a deer walks by, you go to pull

1:42:53your bow back. You're like, oh, Jesus.

1:42:55Yeah. Like, why am I so weak?

1:42:56Yeah. Like, you could barely pull your bow back when you're up in the tree.

1:42:59Yeah. But nothing, I mean, no, no challenge whatsoever compared to elk hunting.

1:43:02No. That was my, blew my mind how hard that was.

1:43:04And the guy I went with, you know, he grew up in Montana.

1:43:06He's like a mountain goat.

1:43:08I just like couldn't keep up with this guy, man.

1:43:09I'm like, this isn't, how do you do this?

1:43:11Just constant all day long.

1:43:13You can't just get out of your, off your couch and go elk hunting in

1:43:15the mountains. You can't do it.

1:43:17No, you got to get in shape.

1:43:18Yeah. Like my friend Cam Haynes, that's why he started running.

1:43:21He became an ultra runner.

1:43:23Yeah. He's doing like 250 miles stuff, right?

1:43:25Yeah. He does like these three day runs.

1:43:27He tried to get you into that?

1:43:29Have you done any of that?

1:43:30No chance. I have one knee that sucks.

1:43:33I have one knee that I fucked up in martial arts.

1:43:35It's missing meniscus. And I cracked it skiing too.

1:43:39I wiped out skiing, got a fracture of the top of my tibia.

1:43:43So it's like, it's, if I started running, it would get beat up real bad.

1:43:48Right. But I do, there's plenty of conditioning you could do without running, you know,

1:43:51but it's the pounding of running.

1:43:54It's not good for my knee.

1:43:55There's something so amazing though about getting to that first thing in the morning when

1:43:59the sun's coming up and you're glassing and you're just like, this is what I

1:44:03always wanted hunting to be like.

1:44:04Yeah. It's the real thing.

1:44:06Yeah. It's like, this is what it's supposed to feel like.

1:44:08You're so far out there.

1:44:10You know, I didn't get to go the last couple of years.

1:44:12My wife was having our baby two years ago, so I wasn't allowed to be

1:44:16in the woods with no service.

1:44:18And then last year I was shooting the show, but this year I'm going to

1:44:19be able to go. I got a good spot.

1:44:21And even if I'm shooting the show, it's like, it's right there.

1:44:24Well, they have phones now that have satellite service.

1:44:28I think you get, is that, does T -Mobile have that now where you can

1:44:31get Starlink on your, on your phone?

1:44:35I know they're doing that soon.

1:44:36And you know, you can text message with iPhones.

1:44:39You can, I got done that in the middle of the woods.

1:44:41And you know what the best thing is, man?

1:44:43When we were in Utah last year, the last two years, I've had a Starlink

1:44:47Mini. It is the shit.

1:44:50It's like the size of an iPad.

1:44:51You just lay it down on the ground.

1:45:52But there's the elk hunting thing that the, the thing that makes it all the

1:45:57more exciting is like they're moving around.

1:46:01You're playing. in the wind and then the sound they make when they're screaming and

1:46:06you hear you like if you never knew what that was you would think there's

1:46:11demons in the woods yeah demons are like t -rex right it's crazy the sound

1:46:16is so incredible it's so incredible and it's so hard to do it's like that

1:46:21to me is uh one of the things that i love like every year because

1:46:24everything goes away it's so difficult it's so difficult to get in shape for it

1:46:29so difficult to manage your way into the mountains and and to be in shape

1:46:34to be able to do it day after day and then to be able to

1:46:36pull off a shot you know like you know like you have this brief moment

1:46:40the thing's 65 yards away and you draw back yeah trying to settle your pin

1:46:44and you could have done all of that just to like mess it up yeah

1:46:48one little tiny yeah it happens all the time but when you're successful oh my

1:46:52god it's the greatest feeling of all time and then when you're eating it and

1:46:56you're you know you're at home and you're on the barbecue grilling these elk steaks

1:47:00like i can't wait to do this again yeah it's so exciting yeah and it's

1:47:05just but it's the being out there it's like a vitamin it's like a vitamin

1:47:10that you didn't know you needed it's like your whole body's like oh this is

1:47:13so much better than regular life you can't be mentally unwell no it's like impossible

1:47:18right yeah yeah it's amazing you just feel so much better the air is better

1:47:22you know it's like and you're more focused you're not distracted and you just you

1:47:27feel alive yeah and it's also the majesty of nature you're just around these trees

1:47:33and mountains and you're catching all these animals that are out there and you know

1:47:37you see eagles flying overhead you're like god you're like day three you're like i

1:47:42think i'm just gonna move out here i'm just gonna do this and then you

1:47:46go back to real life and you're like oh yeah i think that all the

1:47:48time i think that all the time that i like to live in the mountains

1:47:51my wife is not down with it but i'd love it yeah i might get

1:47:55a place somewhere one day in the mountains just to retreat just to be able

1:47:59to just disconnect shut off for a while i think that's probably a good idea

1:48:03i love it i think i wonder though now that i have a kid like

1:48:06we're gonna have to start thinking about you know school for him and stuff and

1:48:10i don't there's really not i don't know if i don't you know once we

1:48:14get there we'll figure that out but we're gonna probably have to get somewhere closer

1:48:17to some people doesn't bozeman have good schools where you know what are you near

1:48:22uh i'm i'm about an hour south of missoula so i fly to missoula to

1:48:26go home missoula has good schools right yeah university but i'd have to move closer

1:48:31to missoula and at that point i'm like why don't i just you know move

1:48:34to a city i guess you know i know i think the move might be

1:48:39getting somewhere you know a little more populated and then keeping like a cabin in

1:48:43montana like you were talking about you know and then taking him out there whenever

1:48:46we can that'd probably be the thing do you have a place in your house

1:48:49where you record do you have like a little recording studio or anything yeah like

1:48:52a just for me to record demos to send to people to actually record just

1:48:56to be like this is something i've been working on or you know um kind

1:48:59of a setup like one of these and and a computer um but yeah i

1:49:03do a lot of writing up there it's a great place to write songs how

1:49:06do you write do you write on paper or do you just start strumming and

1:49:10singing different every time sometimes i'll have like a it'll it'll be a melody uh

1:49:15it'll be a guitar riff it could be like a lyrical idea some sort of

1:49:20hook you know it comes in a lot of different ways and then sometimes i'll

1:49:23finish something on my own sometimes i'll do a nashville trip and sit with some

1:49:28other writers that i like and you know we'll kind of like bang it out

1:49:31together and that's the coolest part of the process man there's something about making something

1:49:36out of absolutely nothing it's like addicting you know yeah it's really cool yeah jokes

1:49:41are similar in the a way i bet i've never really been a songwriter but

1:49:46i'm guessing so it's like creating something out of like out of your mind yeah

1:49:51all of a sudden it's a thing and then you're performing it in front of

1:49:53people and it's like i've heard you talk about this and and any good creative

1:49:58person talk about this but like it comes to you yeah you can't really take

1:50:01credit for a good idea yeah you know exactly i'll just be driving and be

1:50:04like whoa that's where'd that come from like whatever that is give me more yeah

1:50:08i love it you know i was talking to michael paul and about that yesterday

1:50:11we were talking about consciousness and we were talking about how it just seems like

1:50:18you're not doing it it's just coming out of the ether you know it's just

1:50:21like and you just have to show up and receive it and if you show

1:50:25up enough and you you know pay homage to the muse and sit there you

1:50:30ever read war of art steven press book i got a box of copies i'll

1:50:35give you a copy of it out there he always gets well i bought a

1:50:37box of copies i bought a bunch of them and i used to hand them

1:50:40out to comedians and artists when i was on the show i was like well

1:50:43just listen to me you got to read it it's a really small book it's

1:50:46easy but it's one of the best books ever about creativity and it essentially just

1:50:50he tells you if you treat it like there is a muse like there is

1:50:55a god a goddess that will give you ideas as long as you pay respect

1:51:00to the muse you have to show up on time every day sit there and

1:51:04do it and some days you get nothing but you just got to keep showing

1:51:07up keep showing up and trust in that process and eventually you're like oh my

1:51:12god this idea is so good yeah where did it come from that makes sense

1:51:15where did it come from yeah when i'm when i'm when i'm in a really

1:51:18good spot sort of mentally emotionally spiritually taking care of myself sleeping i get more

1:51:23of those yeah and i know there's this like mysticism around like people who like

1:51:27you know or s thompson or someone like that who just kind of spent a

1:51:30lot of time being fucked up and they still get it that never worked out

1:51:34really well for me i've tried it trust me it's not great with with those

1:51:39guys they're trying to get out of their own head you know they're just trying

1:51:42to get blasted so they could just like just release themselves from their life and

1:51:49then just obliterate it just start writing yeah and then the muse starts talking to

1:51:55them interesting yeah but him and way or there's a lot of guys like oh

1:51:58yeah had to be sort of a little messed up stephen king to do the

1:52:01thing that's right yeah yeah his book on writing is fantastic too it's called on

1:52:06writing stephen king i read that one yeah it's great right really good he was

1:52:09obliterated like most of his great work most of the great stuff out of his

1:52:14fucking mind on drugs and yeah alcohol and and some of those guys like once

1:52:19they stop doing it they lose the thing and i don't name names but like

1:52:23him there's some yeah there's some artists i love that they kind of got clean

1:52:27yep and you're like where'd the thing go yeah which is unfortunate you know yeah

1:52:31it happens with comics too does it some of them though get better like david

1:52:34tell got way better when he quit drinking um it's interesting it doesn't always it

1:52:39doesn't have to be that but for a lot of them like that crutch the

1:52:43whatever it is that connects them to the creativity once they eliminate that part and

1:52:48try to keep try to stay alive essentially like stephen king was like killing himself

1:52:53but his later work is just not comparable what's your process like writing jokes like

1:53:00how does that start for you like how do you it it is a it's

1:53:05there's some ideas that just come to me out of the middle of nowhere like

1:53:09i'll be just hanging out and and then i have an idea or i'm driving

1:53:12in my car and i have an idea and i just have to write it

1:53:14down and then a lot of it is just sitting down with a computer just

1:53:18sitting down and like what am i writing about i'm writing about immigration okay let

1:53:22me fucking and it i write in essay form so i don't try to write

1:53:28like a stand -up comedy joke which i've tried before but that never works but

1:53:32what does work is if i lose myself and just ruminating on an idea and

1:53:38just explore it from every different angle and then i'll find one paragraph i might

1:53:43write 2 000 words and i'll find one paragraph i'm like that's it and i'll

1:53:48take that out and i'll put it in there and i'll try to introduce it

1:53:51on stage and then i try to figure out how to segue into it and

1:53:54then i try to figure out how to expand on it and then i'll take

1:53:57that one thing and then i'll stare at that one paragraph and go what else

1:54:00like what else what's the other angle like what what if i was not like

1:54:04that what how do i feel about if i was on the other side of

1:54:08that what if i'm the person that's going through this and what if i'm this

1:54:11and that and then i'll try to just try that and it's it's like i

1:54:14always describe as like you're trying to you're trying to build a mountain one layer

1:54:19of paint at a time and it's a long and brute and then sometimes it's

1:54:24not some jokes just come to you in full form oh wow like the way

1:54:29i wrote it is the way i say it it's perfect huh but that's you

1:54:33can't count on that either right it's and again it's not i don't think they're

1:54:38mine you know they're just coming from somewhere yeah the key is just showing up

1:54:43that's the key the key is like sitting in front of that fucking computer or

1:54:47some guys don't like a computer they want a notepad they want pen and paper

1:54:51they like they like it better that way and i get it but for me

1:54:54i can type like i don't have to look at the keys i can touch

1:54:58type so for me i can write a word out as fast as i'm thinking

1:55:02it which is way better for me than writing down because i write slower than

1:55:07i type and so i want to be able to get it all out i

1:55:11want to to me it's like it doesn't and then i write it on paper

1:55:14eventually but when i first write it i want to write it down on a

1:55:18computer because i can capture it quicker yeah and you can cut and paste and

1:55:23move things to another file and start fresh and like explore it again this last

1:55:28album i did we tried a really different process than i'd done before usually you

1:55:32go into a studio you know there's a lot of money behind it you got

1:55:36a big producer as you know you're taking up their time you have everything ready

1:55:40to go but um on this new one we did everything there's only two songs

1:55:44i'd had already written and eight out of the ten songs we wrote either the

1:55:48day of or the night before in the studio because i wanted to make something

1:55:52as personal as possible because you know the subject matter is stuff where i'm like

1:55:58if this is gimmicky or or overthought it's not then i'm i'm sort of trying

1:56:03to like capitalize on grief or things i'm talking about so i want to go

1:56:09in and just be as open as possible and just get what we get and

1:56:12just try to you know tell the truth which is you know that's the goal

1:56:15of country really or it used to be and so yeah we would um we

1:56:20would cut and then in the night after we'd cut we'd sit and try to

1:56:24write the song for the next day and if we didn't get it we'd show

1:56:26up early the next day and try to write the song for that day it

1:56:29was an amazing process we called it the pressure cooker because it was just like

1:56:32you better get something because you're on the clock yeah man it was it was

1:56:37um i don't i doubt i'll ever do that again but what a like cathartic

1:56:41amazing process like there's because usually you'll write a song you'll have a demo for

1:56:46it some something where you just sit down and play guitar into your phone or

1:56:49something so you'll remember the melody remember the chords and you listen to it so

1:56:53much that you get sick of it before you've ever even cut it and with

1:56:55this there was never a demo there was never it was straight from you know

1:56:59heart brain tape like it was it was pretty special i think there's something to

1:57:04be said for pressure like that where it forces you it forces you to come

1:57:09up with something yeah the pressure cooker man we just we had to you know

1:57:13yeah it was it was amazing yeah just like forces your synapses to fire yeah

1:57:18there's something to be said for that like there's that's the thing about comedy too

1:57:22when you when you have a new bit like part of the thing is like

1:57:26take that bit when it's not really done yet and just throw it out there

1:57:30in front of a crowd and find the beats find where it is and sometimes

1:57:35in front of a crowd as you're saying it you'll have a new idea like

1:57:39what the fuck is this like why are we doing and then that'll be the

1:57:43biggest part of the joke like everybody will laugh harder at that part than anything

1:57:47else and it just comes to you because you're under pressure yeah yeah there's something

1:57:52about there's something about forcing your brain to do things like forcing your like you

1:57:56just like you like you have to do it like you can't just dilly -dally

1:58:00no procrastination it's right there right now yeah let's go yeah i mean because you're

1:58:06you're directly connected to whatever the thing yeah it's a it's like a flow state

1:58:11and then there's stuff that just comes to me like john mellencamp told me he

1:58:14wrote hurt so good in the shower really it was just in the shower come

1:58:18on babe you make it hurt so good and he's like it was done best

1:58:23shower ever crazy sometimes love don't feel like a church flashed his armpits He was

1:58:32cool. He was an interesting guy to talk to, man.

1:58:35Fucking dude just chain smokes.

1:58:37He's in his 70s, just chain smoking.

1:58:40He was so happy he could smoke in here.

1:58:43And I was like, you're not going to quit that ever?

1:58:45He's like, this is what he said.

2:00:30So I'd be guzzling water and electrolytes and I'd get in the cold plunge.

2:00:34And it was just this struggle to try to get back to normal.

2:00:38Yeah. And I'm like, I hate that.

2:00:40I don't like that. Yeah.

2:00:42But I don't feel that with a glass of wine.

2:00:44I have a glass of wine or two and I feel great the next day.

2:00:47It doesn't bother me at all.

2:00:49As long as I drink enough water, take electrolytes, get a good night's sleep, I

2:00:53feel totally normal in the morning.

2:00:55That's good. Getting drunk is the problem.

2:00:58It is fun though. It's the best.

2:01:02It's the best. One of my favorite things is like going to a bar in

2:01:06the middle of the day and meeting everyone at the bar and just drinking, you

2:01:11know, even if they're strangers or at the airport bar or whatever.

2:01:13And just like getting to know people I would never have talked to to begin

2:01:17with because why would we talk?

2:01:19Right. I love that. But again, I'm 42 now and the hangovers are starting to

2:01:23really smart, you know. So it's not really worth the price of admission anymore.

2:01:29It's not worth it when you get aware of your body, especially if you're a

2:01:34person like, you know, I work out all the time.

2:01:36And I'm 58 now. So as you get older, it's like most people at 58

2:01:42are half dead. They're kind of falling apart.

2:01:44Yeah. And I've managed to stay healthy and fit.

2:01:46And I don't want to fuck that up just for booze.

2:01:50But, you know, like I said, it's hard when you're with buddies and they want

2:01:54to do shots. Like Shane Gillis is the worst.

2:01:56He's the devil. He's the devil.

2:02:03Fuck. How can you not get drunk with that guy?

2:02:05He's like the most fun ever.

2:02:07And you're having so much fun.

2:02:09When you're drinking with him, it is just like your face is red.

2:02:18And it's just like you call each other the next day.

2:02:23Like there's a lot of times where we went out drinking and we have a

2:02:26gym here. And, you know, we'd have these comedian workouts the next day.

2:02:29And he'd be like, dude, I can't make it.

2:02:30I'm like, come on, pussy.

2:02:31You made me drink last night.

2:02:34But he's just, he's the life of the fucking party, man.

2:02:37And it's just, it's fun.

2:02:39But it just, it comes at a cost.

2:02:42Yeah. That cost is rough, man.

2:02:44Especially with the kid now and him being the age he is.

2:02:47It's just, nothing makes you feel like a bigger piece of shit than being hung

2:02:50over in front of your baby.

2:03:01You can mitigate a lot of that stuff, though.

2:03:03Glutathione is a really good way to mitigate a lot of it.

2:03:07Glutathione actually helps your body process alcohol way quicker.

2:03:11So there's a lot of strategies if you're a drunk.

2:03:15Glutathione. A lot of workarounds.

2:03:16Yeah. Liposomal glutathione in high doses is really good.

2:03:20Electrolytes are huge. Like, a lot of the hangover feeling, there's two things that are

2:03:25going on. One is, that's why they say, like, hair of the dog that bit

2:03:30you. Because you're actually craving more alcohol.

2:03:33That's why people like Bloody Marys the day after they're hung over.

2:03:36That's not a great strategy, but it really does do a little something.

2:03:41But electrolytes are huge. Because another part of it is you're just dehydrated.

2:03:45Like, your brain is dried out.

2:03:48It's a dried out sponge because you're out getting hammered the night before.

2:03:51Yeah. So you gotta drink a lot of water.

2:03:54A buddy of mine drank with Jean -Claude Van Damme once.

2:03:57And he said it was nuts.

2:03:58He goes, he's so disciplined.

2:04:05And with every shot he would take, he would fucking chug water.

2:04:10And he just was just super concerned with keeping his body hydrated while he was

2:04:15boozing. Gotta do what you gotta do, man.

2:04:20He goes, I never saw anybody do that before.

2:04:22I'm like, well, look at the guy.

2:05:15like, three days of feeling terrible.

2:05:19I got lucky that when I was a kid in high school, I had a

2:05:25friend and his cousin got addicted to Coke, and I watched what happened to him.

2:05:29He was selling it, too, and I watched him completely fall apart.

2:05:32It was like, it was like he had been haunted, like something had taken over

2:05:36his body, like a parasite.

2:05:37He lost all his weight, he got super pale, he got real sketchy and weird,

2:05:42and he'd just hang out in his apartment, and they would just watch TV and

2:05:45do Coke all day. It was nuts.

2:05:47Oh, yikes. It was horrible.

2:05:48It was dark. And I was always terrified of doing anything that would turn me

2:05:52into a loser. That was my number one fear when I was a kid.

2:05:55Yeah. And so, like, I'm like, okay, stay away from drugs, because that'll turn you

2:05:59into a loser. Oh, yeah.

2:06:01Yeah, there's sort of, like, there's some sort of gift in, like, having some ambition.

2:06:45fun, but they can take over.

2:08:37And my knee had just been cut open like a fish.

2:08:41And my ACL had been reconstructed.

2:08:43And I was on this perpetual motion machine.

2:08:45So the idea is to keep your knee from going stiff.

2:08:47You're on this thing that straightens your leg out and brings it back.

2:08:50So I'm lying in this bed.

2:08:52My leg is. And I'm hammering that button.

2:08:54I was so happy. I was like, I get it now.

2:08:57I get it. But that was only once, luckily.

2:09:03And they didn't give me.

2:09:05They gave me some painkillers afterwards.

2:09:07I think they gave me Percocets.

2:09:08But they were so bad.

2:09:09I took whatever the dose was.

2:09:11And I only did it once.

2:09:12It was so bad. I felt so dumb and so dull and so stupid.

2:09:17I'm like, I'd rather be in pain.

2:09:19So I sold all my pills to this dude at the pool hall.

2:09:23I gave him my pills.

2:09:24I'm like, here, you can buy these from me.

2:09:26One of my buddies was telling me, he's in the military.

2:09:28And they would carry these morphine lollipops in case they ever got shot.

2:09:32And you just pull it out.

2:09:33In a moment, you start sucking on it.

2:09:35It's just like a morphine high.

2:09:36I was like, I kind of want to get those to fly with.

2:09:39Because wouldn't that be awesome?

2:09:40Like if the plane's going down, you just start sucking on that thing, you'd be

2:09:43fine. I just put on the headphones, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do,

2:09:48do, do. It'd be amazing, dude.

2:12:30then we immediately bailed they're like let's get the fuck out of here yeah i've

2:12:34never seen one don't want to they see big ones up there sometimes and uh

2:12:39john um the her husband he sprayed um what he was in a tree stand

2:12:45and he sprayed it with uh pepper spray and the thing didn't even react he's

2:12:51like like you think you're gonna oh bear spray i'm safe and it was like

2:12:55fuck you yeah it's just like this fucking nine foot bear this huge wild dog

2:16:21with people people wind up dying and there's no fear because in alaska they're a

2:16:27little sketched out about people because people hunt them right and that's the better relationship

2:16:32right the relationship where they have zero fear of people that's not good and that

2:16:37that is montana and that is wyoming and that is idaho look at that guy

2:16:42so this is is this the largest one 1600 it's the second biggest ever taken

2:19:25Have they found any bones or anything?

2:19:27Yeah, the gigantopithecus bones. But they've only found them in Asia.

2:19:30They've never found them in North America.

2:19:31But when the Bering Land Bridge was attached, a lot of animals came across from

2:19:36Asia and made their way into North America through Alaska and down through the Pacific

2:19:42Northwest. And a lot of people have seen them in Alaska.

2:19:45Alaska is like a hotbed for sightings, too.

2:19:48I think those people are cracked out.

2:19:51I think that's probably bears.

2:19:52Right. But I think the Native American stories, I think it's a thousands and thousands

2:19:56of years old thing. I think way back in the day.

2:19:59Like, I was watching this guy named Michael Button.

2:20:02He's been on the podcast before.

2:20:04And he's a historian who really focuses on ancient civilizations.

2:20:11And he was doing this whole video on YouTube about how little is left over.

2:20:18Like, how rare it is to make a fossil.

2:20:20I think about how the dinosaurs were around for literally, like, hundreds of millions of

2:20:24years. And yet, we only have, like, thousands of fossils.

2:20:27And what's the possibility of a fossil existing from a civilization, like, fossilized human being

2:20:33from a civilization 200 ,000 years ago?

2:20:35It's almost none. Most things never become a fossil.

2:20:38It has to be, like, the perfect conditions to create a fossil.

2:20:40And so, we don't really know what animals did or didn't live here, other than

2:20:47fossilized ones. And that's a tiny fraction of what we find.

2:20:51Okay. And so, if there was some sort of big, hairy thing that lived here,

2:20:55because we know there was humans that were living in North America.

2:20:58Now, we know that they were here at least as far back as 22 ,000

2:21:03years. Because of White Sands, New Mexico, they found footprints.

2:21:08And then they do carbon testing on the seeds and the different organic matter that's

2:21:13in those footprints. And they get a carbon date of, like, around 22 ,000 years.

2:21:17Which is pretty crazy, because they used to think it was, like, 13 ,000 years

2:21:20ago. And now, they've pushed that back, like, at least another nine years.

2:21:24And they think it's probably, these weren't the first.

2:21:26There's probably people there even further than that.

2:21:28So, if humans were here, let's say they were here 50 ,000 years ago, that

2:21:32puts it in the timeline where Gigantopithecus could have been alive.

2:21:37Because I think the fossils that they found of Gigantopithecus are 100 ,000 years old,

2:21:41which is just fossils, right?

2:21:43Like, you never know. And that, they didn't find that until the 1920s or 30s.

2:21:50They found teeth in an apothecary shop in China.

2:21:54And this guy who was there, who was an anthropologist, was like, what, where'd you

2:21:58get this? Because they were primate teeth, but they were fucking huge.

2:22:02And so, then they took them to the place, and they found jawbones and a

2:22:05few other pieces. And this thing, they've determined, because of the shape of the jawbone,

2:22:09that it was bipedal. So, it stood up on two legs, and it was, like,

2:22:138 to 10 feet tall.

2:22:14It was a giant primate that was in the orangutan species.

2:29:17so he like takes and there was one guy and he flew him out there

2:29:27his own money taking these guys up there for free educating how does he prove

2:29:32it from up there just flies them up there and shows them you actually can

2:32:58still get this feeling of, like, humble.

2:33:33I can't talk for anyone else, but I'm just in a way better place mentally

2:33:37and otherwise. Yeah, there's this guy who lives in the Arctic, like above the Arctic

2:33:44Circle or near the Arctic Circle, and he—they filmed him this Vice documentary called Hindmo's

2:33:52Great Adventure, and this guy's been living there since, like, the 1970s.

2:33:56He moved up there, and he's got a log cabin, and he just lives up

2:34:00there. All he does is hunts caribou and goes fishing, and he's a really smart

2:34:04guy, and this, like, nerdy reporter with glasses goes up and hangs out with this

2:34:08guy for a few days.

2:34:10And, you know, the guy was really, like, really compelling in the way he was

2:34:18describing, like, I think this is how people are supposed to live.

2:34:21Like, I'm so much more calm and at peace.

2:34:24It seems natural and normal.

2:34:26Like, this is how you're supposed to live.

2:34:27And all he does is just, like, hunt and fish, and he gets, like, some

2:34:31supplies dropped off to him, like, you know, canned goods and shit, baking soda or

2:34:35whatever. But most of his life is just living off of the land.

2:34:40The proof's in the pudding, man.

2:34:41When I'm in a city for a long time and I'm on my phone and

2:34:45I'm looking at Instagram and all that stuff, it takes a week before I feel

2:34:48insane, like, completely crazy. And if I just put that stuff away and go outside,

2:34:53even in a city, like, if I just put that stuff down for a little

2:34:56bit and go outside and connect with the person, I feel, you know, infinitely better.

2:35:02Yeah. And if you just look at, you know, the stuff on your phone and

2:35:05you're so sucked into that, you would believe the world is a shitty place.

2:35:11But then if you don't look at that and you go outside and you live

2:35:13your real life, it doesn't take long before everything feels good again.

2:35:18You know, you're meeting your neighbors or going to the grocery store or going to

2:35:23the post office. Like, everything feels pretty good out there.

2:35:25It's just your phone telling you that this place is terrible.
