0:20Yeah, I believe so. It was before that fight, and that was just around the

0:24time you were talking about fighting Canelo, and everybody was like, that's crazy!

0:27He's going to go up all the way to 168, two more weight classes above

0:31that. That's nuts! Everybody's got to shut the fuck up now.

0:35Yeah, yeah. You know when I say skills pay the bills.

0:40They do, they do. Skills are everything, man.

0:43But the thing is, it's like, it's interesting.

0:45I watched both the Canelo fight and the Maduro fight again recently, and Maduro looked

0:51bigger. He looked bigger than Canelo.

0:54It was really interesting. He was a big dude.

0:56He's a big dude. I wonder what that guy walks around at, because it's not

1:00154. No, not at all.

1:02He just fought at 160 his last fight.

1:04Did he? Yeah. Really an outstanding performance against Canelo.

1:08It was, like I was telling you before, it was a great I told you

1:11so fight for me, because there were so many of my friends that are big

1:15boxing fans that just thought Canelo was too big, they thought it was too much

1:19of a jump, he's too experienced.

1:24Well, you got it? I mean, you made it look, I want to say easy.

1:28It wasn't that it was easy, but it was definitive.

1:31You know, it was such a clear victory.

1:35It was, at one point when you were pity -patting him and then firing off

1:39hard shots, I was like, oh my goodness, he's feeling it.

1:41Yeah, I was in my element.

1:44I was in the zone, mainly because a lot of people was doubting me as

1:49well, you know, telling me I was going to get knocked out, I was too

1:52small, and I was just fighting for the money when I knew what I was

1:57capable of. So I was just like, I'm going to show y 'all what I'm

2:01really about, because this is not the first time that I done heard that, oh,

2:06he can't do this, he can't do that.

2:08I think your situation is very similar to when Roy Jones was in his prime,

2:13because when Roy Jones was in his prime, everybody was saying, Roy Jones, other than

2:17James Toney, Roy Jones really hadn't fought anybody.

2:20And I was like, no, he's just that much better than everybody else.

2:25He makes it look like they're not good.

2:27If you saw them fight against everybody else, you would say these guys are awesome.

2:31For sure, for sure. And I've been dealing with that my whole career, you know,

2:37people getting so much praise after fighting a guy that I already knocked out, you

2:44know, if they beat him.

2:45Oh, such and such beat this guy.

2:48But me, it's, oh, you fighting tomato cans or you fighting bums and things like

2:54this. So it's just like.

2:55It was just because you're doing it so well.

2:57That's what it is. It's just people, they try to find flaws in every great

3:02performance. And the flaws, the only flaws they could find is, yeah, but who are

3:06these guys that he beat?

3:08But you beat great guys.

3:10Champions. Yeah. I mean, listen, one of the more interesting fights to me was the

3:15Benavidez fight. I rewatched that again recently, too.

3:18That was a good fight.

3:18Especially that, whew, because there's so much tension.

3:21Yeah. There's so much shit talking and tension and so many emotions.

3:26And he can fight. He can fight.

3:28You know, a lot of people, they looking at his injury and he fought no

3:34different from before or after the injury.

3:39He fought the same, you know.

3:41So that's another thing that they're going to say, oh, well, he had got shot

3:45in a leg. And if he didn't, then this would have happened or that would

3:50have happened. I'm like, he fought the same.

3:53Like, if you know boxing and you see him box, nothing changed from his boxing

3:59standpoint. He wasn't a mover.

4:01He wasn't this guy that used his legs as a defense or offense.

4:07So I just take it as a grand assault.

4:10Yeah. I'm sure that injury sucked, but he fought the same.

4:14And he fought well. I mean, he's a tough guy.

4:17He fought really well. Took me 12 rounds.

4:19Yeah. Listen. But, oof, that right uppercut in that 12th round that put him down,

4:25I was like, oh, my goodness.

4:26I remember watching that fight live.

4:27I was like, oh, there it is.

4:29There it is. You found him.

4:30Yeah. He had good head movement, you know.

4:34Tough guy. He was ducking them hooks and them straight punches.

4:39So I was just like, all right, I got to switch it up.

4:42Well, also, he believed in himself.

4:44For sure. Definitely. He came into that fight to win.

4:48Oh, definitely. Most definitely. Most definitely.

4:50It's beautiful to watch. You get what you deserve.

4:54Because I felt like, man, if you retired after the Spence fight, I don't think

4:59people that are casuals would really appreciate your skill set.

5:04Yeah. You know, the people inside boxing, the people that really know boxing did.

5:08But I felt like too many of the casuals just talk so much shit.

5:12And so the Canelo fight was the cherry on top of the sundae.

5:16Yeah. It was. And even now, a lot of people saying, oh, well, Canelo's washed.

5:22He's old. And I'm like, well, I'm older than him.

5:25Like, what are we talking about?

5:27You know? So I just love it, you know, because it just shows what level

5:32I'm on, you know, for everybody to already know what happened.

5:39And then they try to take what happened and make it a reason why it

5:44happened. Right. So I just be like, man, it's cool.

5:46That's boxing though, right? That's sports in general.

5:49You're always going to have that.

5:50There's always going to be a bunch of sideline people that talk a lot of

5:53shit. But, you know, for a lot of fighters, it's later in their career, especially

5:58when they're avoided or they have difficulty signing big fights, it's later in their career

6:04that people really appreciate them.

6:06Like, think about Bernard. It wasn't until Bernard Hopkins beat Felix Trinney.

6:10The people were like, oh shit, I think he was like 37 or 36 when

6:16he fought Trinidad, and a lot of people were saying he's washed up, it's over,

6:20and when he knocked out Trinidad, everybody was like, oh, okay.

6:25Yeah, I've been calling out everybody since the beginning.

6:31They created a whole side of the street because of me.

6:36I'm with a different promoter.

6:37It was always something, and everybody always blamed me, but now look at everybody now.

6:43All the promoters working together now.

6:45Why couldn't they work together when it was my turn to shine?

6:49But it is what it is, and life happened, and I'm happy the way it

6:53happened because I did it my way, and I don't think too many other fighters

6:57can say that. That's true, yeah.

7:00It's a dirty business, the business of promoters and keeping guys away from guys and

7:07making sure that their fighter, you know, avoid certain fighters.

7:10It's always been that way, you know, and it's unfortunate for the fans because there's

7:17so many. Like, the big one for a long time was David Benavidez and Canelo.

7:22Like, everybody wants to see that fight, and they just can't figure out a way

7:27to make it happen, and you got to think someone's avoiding somebody, and it's not

7:31Benavidez. No, not at all.

7:34You know, I just think Canelo, in a sense, he knows how big Benavidez is

7:41going to come in the ring.

7:42You know, Benavidez is a great fighter, you know, but he's a big fighter.

7:47He's a tall fighter, you know, and I just think Canelo knows, like, why would

7:53I want to get in the ring with this guy that's going to be massive

7:58come fight time, and I'm not that big of a guy at all.

8:03I've been doing all this with my skills because Canelo's not a big guy.

8:09He's been fighting big guys his whole career, you know, and beating them with skill,

8:15you know, so you got to tip your hat off to Canelo and what he's

8:19accomplished. Absolutely. Being 5 '7", going up to 175 and fighting these big guys and

8:27actually winning. Knocked out Kovalev.

8:30Yeah. I mean, it was Kovalev later in his career, but he's still Kovalev.

8:34For sure. And then having the courage to fight Bival in his prime.

8:37For sure. I think that's the fight that probably kept us from getting the Benavidez

8:41fight, the Bival fight, because I think after that fight, he's like, okay.

8:45Yeah, this dude big. This is a little big.

8:48Yeah. Because Bival, not just big, but he's got that Russian style, light on the

8:53feet, in and out, in and out, in and out.

8:55To a boxer. It's a difficult style to handle, you know.

8:59And, like, the only guy to beat Betterbeef was another beast.

10:08Yeah, so I think, you know, him knowing that, and then I think the disrespect

10:14that he got from Benavidez had persuaded him to go elsewhere.

10:20But, you know, there's been many boxers from the past that didn't fight people that

10:29they wanted to fight. You know, look at Sugar Ray Leonard and Aaron Pryor.

10:36They never got that fight.

10:38And that's just one of many.

10:39So it's going to be like that.

10:42Well, it always seems at the end that it all worked out the way it

10:47was supposed to. You know, and that's how it felt like for me after your

10:51Canelo victory. Like, this is, this is like, you know, all the bullshit, it's like,

10:57now everybody has to shut the fuck up.

10:59It's like, all the bullshit's gone.

11:01It's like, now everybody's got to give you your just due.

11:04Because that was a stellar championship performance.

11:07I mean, that was one of the all -time great performances.

11:10Because it was a Canelo that's, you know, you could say whatever you want.

11:14I think he's still in his prime.

11:16And you just outboxed him.

11:18And you outboxed him. I mean, think about it.

11:2140 to 47, 54, all the way up to 68.

11:25And you outboxed him. That's right.

11:2735 first. Right. That's right.

11:29That's crazy. Yeah. That's crazy.

11:32Going up from 35 to 68 and outboxing the champ.

11:36And the way you did it, too.

11:38It was so skillful. It was so beautiful to watch, man.

11:40When you're a fan of skillful, intelligent boxing, that was such a good fight to

11:46watch. Because, you know, Canelo's a dangerous guy.

11:49He's a heavy puncher. And he puts a lot of power into his punches.

11:54He's kind of changed over the years and really relied more on his power.

11:58But, man, he knows how to land it.

12:00And when he lands it, he puts people in a lot of trouble.

12:02And, whew, he just. There was this one move that you were doing where you

12:08were throwing a left hand and then a quick hook behind it before you even

12:13brought the hand back. So, he was going a counter and you were throwing a

12:16quick hook. Yeah. I was like, oh, that is so pretty.

12:20That is so pretty. Trying to catch him in a counter.

12:21Yeah. You know, Canelo is a great counter puncher.

12:24Yeah. You know, so you got to beat them to it.

12:26You got to counter to counter at times.

12:28Did that fight play out the way you thought it was going to play out?

12:31Yeah, most definitely. Exactly the way you thought it was.

12:33Most definitely. We knew what we was up against.

12:36You know, when I went to his fight against Berlanga and against the guy that's

12:46on his team, I forgot his name, Munguia.

12:49Munguia. When I was with Turkey, I said, Turkey, you can't beat me.

12:54Just watching him from 135 to now, like, live, I'm looking at him, I'm just

13:04like, I can beat this dude.

13:05Like, my confidence is getting more and more and more.

13:08And his last fight in Saudi Arabia, I was like, yeah, he can't fight like

13:15that against me, which he didn't, which he definitely rose his game.

13:20But I just believed in myself that much that nothing was going to stop me

13:26from getting that victory that night.

13:28The fight in Saudi Arabia, he looked, like, under -motivated.

13:31Yeah. It wasn't a big enough challenge for him.

13:34He didn't look like he was in the same kind of shape physically, like when

13:37you look at him. He wasn't, you know, and it happens, you know.

13:43That's why I always train, like, this is the toughest fight of my career, because

13:47it is. Every fight is.

13:49And you never know what to expect with those type of fighters that nobody know

13:54about, quote. Right, right, right, right.

13:56Them be the ones that sneak up on you and, you know, you got to

14:01be ready for them. But he didn't come to fight.

14:03He moved the whole fight, and, you know, Canelo was frustrated, and he was just

14:09like, ah, man, this dude didn't come to do anything.

14:12Right. He came to survive.

14:14Yeah, so I could see where he was frustrated at.

14:16Yeah. Yeah. Well, he probably thought he didn't belong in there with Canelo either, right?

14:22Right. So he probably said, listen, if I just keep moving, I can get out

14:26of here with my dignity intact and just never get hit real good.

14:31Yeah. Yeah. It's fascinating now because before that fight, you were looked at as one

14:39of the best boxers today.

14:40Now you're looked at as one of the best fighters ever.

14:44And it's interesting how that changes, how people now look at your body.

14:49And then they look at Errol Spence before you fought him and go, Errol Spence

14:52can fight, man. He's a really good fighter.

14:55And a lot of people discredited your victory over him because of that car accident

15:00that he had. And maybe he wasn't as good as we thought.

15:05But now with the Canelo victory, you're in this rare air of, you know, mentioned

15:13as one of the greatest of all time.

15:15Yeah. You know, there's a handful of guys.

15:17There is no, it's very difficult to say the greatest of all time.

15:21Because people want to go all the way back to Sugar Ray Robinson.

15:24They, you know, they throw Floyd in the mix, prime time Roy Jones.

15:28There's all these different fighters they put as the greatest of all time.

15:30But you are now in that conversation.

15:33That's got to be nice.

15:34It is beautiful. You know, especially all the hard work that I done put in

15:40to be here at that pinnacle of the sport.

15:44You know, since I was seven years old, I've been boxing.

15:48I've been fighting. I've been a fighter since day one.

15:51And so when people compare me to, like, Sugar Ray Robinson and Floyd Mayweather and

15:57Sugar Ray Leonard, comparing me to who will win, who will win, that just let

16:02me know that I did my job well in the sport.

16:06Oh, you absolutely did. Now, are you definitely done done?

16:10It's over with. It's definitely over?

16:12Yeah. I don't got nothing.

16:13So I told a couple of my close friends, I said, okay, since 2014, I've

16:21been fighting for something, a title.

16:24I won my first title in 2014, March of 2014.

16:28Ever since then, I've been fighting for titles, undisputed titles, undisputed, undisputed titles, undisputed.

16:37Like, just everything that I've been fighting for.

16:40Now, and I just come back, and it's just like, all right, what's the motivation?

16:44Just money? You know, like, all right, so what is on top of that?

16:48You know, because my thing was, the money's going to come.

16:54You know, I was taking pay cuts after pay cuts after pay cuts, because I

16:59knew what I wanted my legacy to be when I finished boxing.

17:05I wanted to be remembered as one of the greatest champions of all time, you

17:11know, and I think I did that, you know.

17:14So now it's like, this last fight that I had, the height of it, there's

17:22no better finish than that, to me.

17:23Like, what was on the line, coming from where I came from, all the odds

17:30that were stacked against me, all the things that I had to go through and

17:34camp to get to that fight.

17:37You know, it was just like, man, you did everything right.

17:41So what can top that?

17:43I love that. I love when fighters go out on top like that.

17:47And for a fighter to go out like you have with all your championship experience,

17:52all the weight classes you competed in, undefeated, and beat Canelo, another all -time great.

17:58I mean, that is a perfect finale for a spectacular career.

18:03It's pretty dope. For sure.

18:05And go out with your faculties intact, your health intact, plenty of money.

18:10It's nice. It's beautiful because nobody knows what us fighters adore to get to the

18:20point to entertain the fans.

18:23You know, we go through a lot.

18:25You know, we put our body through a lot.

18:27And then when it's all said and done, when our body broke down to the

18:32point where we can't take care of ourself, they don't care about us.

18:37They're going to say, oh, well, he.

18:39He was once a good champion, and we go to the fights.

18:42You see a lot of old fighters showing up to the fights, and people just

18:46walk past them. Yeah. You know, they're on to the next.

18:49Oh, let's see the young fighter, you know.

18:52And it's like they use you up until you have nothing left.

18:56Then they forget about you.

18:57Yeah. You know, so it's very critical for these fighters to think about their health

19:03first because once it's over with, it's over with.

19:07And you can't get your health back.

19:10Right. You can always get money elsewhere, but once you can't, your mind is messed

19:16up, it's over with. That's such a good lesson for young fighters to see, too,

19:22to see a guy like yourself be fully dedicated, so disciplined, get through the whole

19:28thing, get out, on top, and done.

19:33Yeah. And so many fighters have said that, and then a couple years go by,

19:38their identity is wrapped up in fighting.

19:41They go, man, I think I got one more in me, and then, you know,

19:43maybe they're buying a lot of shit.

19:45That's the real problem. Yeah.

19:47The real. It's always going to be that, you know, I got another one in

19:52me. I got another one in me because they miss that high of all the

19:59fans chanting their name and everybody, you know, cameras, lights, and, you know, they miss

20:08it, you know, but I was always that type of person.

20:11I didn't care about all that.

20:13Really? Yeah, I can have the lights.

20:14Just pay me and I go under the rock somewhere, you know, take care of

20:19my family, you know. I never was a guy that wanted to be all up

20:22in the media and wanted to be the center of attention.

20:25How come? Because that's just me.

20:28I already knew what I was doing it for.

20:30I never was doing it to be famous.

20:32You know, I don't walk around with a whole entourage to get noticed.

20:37You know, I'll be under the radar.

20:40I do like that. You show up by yourself.

20:41But one time you showed up at one of the UFCs and someone said you

20:45were Kendrick Lamar and they put it on the fucking screen.

20:48And I didn't catch it because I was doing the broadcast, but I was like,

20:51are you guys out of your fucking, you don't know who Terrence Crawford is and

20:55you're in combat sports? This is crazy.

20:57I think they did that on purpose.

20:59No. No way. No way.

21:01They had to. No, no, no, no, no.

21:03It was just some moron in the truck.

21:05Yeah. Yeah, no, 100%. They did not do that on purpose.

21:08No one in the UFC would ever disrespect you like that.

21:10No one would disrespect you like that.

21:13No chance. Yeah, I was sitting next to everybody and I was like, did they

21:17really just do that? No, they did not do that on purpose.

21:21That was just some dumbass that thought that you were Kendrick Lamar for some reason.

21:25Yeah. It was so stupid.

21:27And then I think they corrected it later in the broadcast.

21:31I don't know who it was.

21:32Right. I didn't even want to know.

21:34I'd yell at them. For sure.

22:14You know, a lot of times you're just by yourself.

22:16Yeah. You know, and that's unusual for a guy who's achieved as much as you've

22:20achieved. Yeah. People would be so like surprised that, you know, they'll see me in

22:26the airport. They'd be like, you by yourself?

22:30Like, man, this is crazy.

22:32I would always imagine you with security guards, big entourage.

22:37Right. I mean, that's just a bill.

22:39Yeah. You know, you got to pay all them people to be around you.

22:42That's true, too. So, you know, I don't need to show up.

22:44Yeah. I mean, every time you've showed up at the studio, you show up by

22:47yourself. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's another good example for young fighters to realize, like,

22:53at the end of the day, what are you really doing it for?

22:55You know, all that other bullshit, all the attention and stuff, that's, it's very temporary.

23:00It's very fleeting. It goes away.

23:03Legacy. Legacy and the glory of your accomplishments, that stays forever.

23:08And the respect of people in boxing that really know.

23:13Yeah, for sure. Yeah. That's what, that's what it's all about.

23:16And you've got that. Now, everybody has to shut the fuck up.

23:19Yeah, they do. Everybody has to shut the fuck up.

23:21Even the people that said that, oh, Canelo's, stop.

23:23You were the same people saying Canelo was going to stop him.

23:26You were the same people that saying Errol Spence was going to stop me.

23:29Same people that saying Majumov was going to stop me.

23:31Yep. And so forth. So, it just got to the point where they just, they

23:38can't, they got to accept it now.

23:39It's like, man, I've been hating on this dude for so long, you know, and

23:44he's just been proving me wrong time after time.

23:47It's like, let me just give him his flowers.

23:49Yes. Forget it. You know.

23:50That's beautiful. And for young fighters, it's such a good thing to watch.

23:55It's so good for young fighters to have an inspirational figure, to have someone who

24:00really does it, and does it perfectly, and does it in a way that is

24:05very unusual, because like, you're one of the best switch hitters since Marvin Hagler, if

24:09not the best, you know, and like that, God, that is such an underrated skill.

24:14It was so funny. One of the times you were in here, you were telling

24:16me that his coach, your coach told you to stop doing that.

24:19Yeah. He was like, you need to focus on fighting orthodox.

24:24The right way, instead of switching to southpaw, I was just like, all right, switch

24:31southpaw again, and then it was just like, he was like, all right, well, you're

24:33going to do that, we're going to train like that.

24:35I was like, all right, let's train like that, because I'm going to keep switching,

24:38because it just came so natural.

24:40Yeah. I'll be in there, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, and then I'll just,

24:42I'll just switch, like, unthinkingly.

24:45Bah, bah, bah. Yes. Man, you know, it was just, I win, and I win,

24:51and he was like, all right, we're going to fight like, we're going to train

24:53like that. Well, it's such an underrated aspect of boxing if you can do it

24:58because you have to recalibrate where everything is coming from every time you switch.

25:02Different angles, all that. In MMA, it's become commonplace.

25:05In the beginning of MMA, it was a lot of people would stand one way

25:09or the other. And now a large percentage of these young guys coming up are

25:13constantly switching because it hides combinations, it hides different techniques.

25:18There's so many different things you could do in MMA because you're switching and kicking,

25:22you're switching and punching, you're kicking, and then now you're in southpaw and you're throwing

25:26left hands instead of right hands.

25:29There's so much overload of the mind where you have to calculate all these different

25:33things. And if you don't spar on a regular basis with a very crafty guy

25:37who switches a lot, it could fuck you up inside the cage.

25:40Yeah, because some people, they have better chances on one side than the other.

25:47You know, and then when you switch on them, it's just like, oh, I hate

25:50fighting southpaws. Right. You know, and just do something to their brain, you know, because

25:55they might be slower moving one way than the other way.

25:58Well, everything looks so weird when all of a sudden the jab's on the right

26:02side and the left. And then your brain has to, like...

26:06You got to worry about the hook now instead of the straight.

26:09Everything's different. Yeah. Yeah. It's just...

26:12I mean, I wonder how many young fighters are going to see your example and

26:17start training that very early in their career now.

26:20Because I think it's... The conventional wisdom was that you have one stance, whether it's

26:26southpaw or orthodox, stick with that.

26:28There's a few outliers like Hagler.

26:30But for the most part, stick with that.

26:32But I don't think that's the way to go.

26:34I mean, I think great fighters have stayed in one stance.

26:38But I think the way to go is having the ability to switch up.

26:42Yeah, it's always, you know, beneficial.

26:46If you can have it and not need it, then you need it and you

26:49ain't got it. Yes. You know, like, okay, it's cool that I don't need it

26:54for this fight, but I got it in my bag just in case I have

26:56it. Yes. You know, and that's like me.

27:00I got it all. Yeah.

27:03Do you think you're going to train people when you're done?

27:06I'll be training a little bit.

27:08I'll be helping out at the gym.

27:09But my patience ain't there yet.

27:12Yeah. Like, I get frustrated and I have to remember, like my coach, Bomek, say,

27:18everybody's not you, bud. Yeah.

27:21Everybody don't adapt like you.

27:23Everybody not as athletic like you.

27:26You know, so you can't be frustrated if they not getting something.

27:31Right. Like, as fast as you getting it.

27:34You've been doing this since you was seven.

27:36Some of these kids that started when they was teenagers, you know, so you got

27:40to give them grace, you know, and take your time with them.

27:43And some of them, you know, they flat -footed and you just got to train

27:48them into their style. Everybody not going to have your style.

27:52So when he explained that to me, I was just like, yeah, you're right.

27:56You know, let me back up a little bit and just tell them what I

28:00see. Yeah. You know, more so than trying to coach them into being this fighter

28:05that I want them to be.

28:07Being a version of you.

28:08Yeah. Yeah. That's got to be difficult, right?

28:10Because everybody does have a different style.

28:12Yeah. And, you know, you're never going to convince some fighters to fight your way.

28:17Mm -hmm. Yeah. But the wisdom that you can bestow on young fighters, it's like

28:24there's a lot of great fighters like, you know, Freddie Roach that had some boxing

28:28matches but was never like an elite boxer but still was a great coach.

28:33And – but to have an elite fighter, to be a coach, it's like there's

28:38an element of that. First of all, there's an element from the young guy coming

28:43up like you want to impress.

28:44You got Terrence Crawford in your corner.

28:46Yeah. You want to impress him.

28:47Buddy McGurk did a fantastic job and he became a great trainer.

28:51There's a bunch of fighters that have done it but it's like I always wonder

28:55because I feel like there's so much you have to offer to these young –

29:00there's so much small, minutiae, intimate details of what you're thinking and what's going on

29:06that would completely change the way a young fighter sees certain exchanges.

29:11Yeah, for sure. And I try to help them – and I try to help

29:15them on that aspect when they're in the ring or when they're in the back

29:18or when they're hitting the mitts, shadow boxing, just little details.

29:22You know, I come in the gym and you see the little kids, they see

29:25me and they look to the corner and they hit the back.

29:29Like, ah, ah, ah, ah.

29:30Yeah, they get fired up.

29:31You can see they're trying to get my attention.

29:32I come over there and give them some little wisdom, you know, and they're appreciative.

29:38Yeah. But it's good that they see me in the gym all the time.

29:41But, you know, my son wrestling next door and they over here boxing and I'm

29:47both one side and the other side.

29:50Your son just won a wrestling title.

29:52Yeah, he just won state as a freshman.

29:54That's incredible. Yeah. That's incredible.

29:56That's so amazing. Does – what does he want to do?

30:00He want to go D1.

30:01He want to – Yeah?

30:02He told me that Saturday after the tournament, we're on our way to the Ryan

30:08Garcia fight, he said, Dad, I want to go to the Olympics.

30:12Wow. I said, you want to?

30:14I said, what kind of mind state is that?

30:17I said, you're going to go.

30:19I said, you got to have it in your mind.

30:21You're going. You can't say you want to go.

30:23You got to say, I'm going to the Olympics.

30:26That way you know you're already programming it, you know, for the future.

30:31How did you learn that mentality?

30:33Man, been doubted my whole life.

30:36You know, been doubted my whole life and my coach, Midge Minor, used to always

30:41say, la -di -da -di, we fight anybody.

30:43They ain't fought you yet, you know, and I just carried that on my shoulders.

30:48Like, anybody you put in front of me, they ain't fought me yet, so you

30:53can't tell me they can beat me until they beat me.

30:55So just like my son, like, hey, you got to have that confidence that whatever

31:00you say you want to do, you're going to go out and do it.

31:02But you got to put the work there first.

31:05So in that sense, doubters give you fuel.

31:08Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. There's a lot of people like that.

31:11A lot of people like that, they live off the haters.

31:13Yeah, oh, yeah. They fuel me up.

31:16And then especially when I – it's crazy because, like, Majimov and Canelo, they were

31:20so respectful, you know, and I respect them.

31:25You know, I've been a fan of Majimov, you know, coming from Uzbekistan and learning

31:33about him and hearing about him, and I've always been a fan of Canelo, like,

31:37since I can remember, you know.

31:40So I didn't have that, like, killer, like, mind, like, heart in my heart.

31:47Like, I wanted to beat him, but, like, my other fights, I was like, man,

31:50I want to knock this dude out.

31:52Like Benavidez. Yeah. I wanted to knock him out.

31:55Like, so, like, even in training, like, I didn't have that rage.

31:58Like, this dude talking shit.

32:00Like, he never – they never got under my skin.

32:02It was, like, all respectful, so it was, like, all right, I want to whoop

32:06their ass, but I didn't want to, like, inflict, like, pain.

32:11Like, I want to, like, knock him out.

32:13There was one fighter you fought at 140.

32:15His name is escaping me, but you stopped him in the fifth – yes.

32:19Yeah, I wanted to knock him out.

32:20Oh, boy. Yeah, and I was so mad.

32:23Like, when you watch that fight, you know, I missed, like – when they stopped

32:27it, I missed, like, two crazy hooks.

32:30And I just was, like, man, why couldn't I land him?

32:32Like, he would have went to sleep.

32:34Like, that's how I was saying.

32:34You weren't happy with just stopping him.

32:36Yeah, yeah, I wanted to put him to sleep.

32:38But, you know, it's a sport, and it is what it is, and I'm happy

32:44that we all could go home to our family and talk about it, you know,

32:48years down the line. Yeah.

32:51Well, that is the danger of the sport.

32:53That's why it's so different than every other sport.

32:56It's, like, you're legitimately putting your life on the line.

32:59Yeah, and a lot of people don't understand that until something happens.

33:03Right. You know, us boxers, a lot of boxers have died in that ring.

33:08A lot of boxers have went in the ring one way and left it a

33:14different way. Yes. You know, so when a lot of fans, they criticize boxers for

33:20doing what the sport is for, and that's boxing, you know, us boxers, like, you're

33:30not even here getting your brains beat out.

33:33So what you consider boring, we consider us doing what the sport is meant to

33:41do, is box. Right. You know, and I think a lot of fans don't give

33:50a lot of fighters, they just do, for boxing.

33:54You know, like Floyd, like Shakur, you know, when they pure boxers.

33:59Yes. You know, they want to see people bleeding, battered, knocked out, you know, but

34:06they're not thinking about the aftermath and the ather effects of them fighters going to

34:11the hospital, blood on the brains, pissing blood and things like that.

34:17Like, your body is not meant to be beat on like that.

34:19Right. You know, so they just looking at, oh, well, I'll pay this money, y

34:24'all going to go in there and kill each other, you know, and I think

34:28that's wrong. Yeah. Well, you're always going to have morons in this world.

34:32You're always going to have casuals.

34:33You're always going to have people that don't appreciate what they're saying.

34:36But, like, when I see a performance like Shakur versus Tiafimo that last fight, like,

34:41that was art. That was art.

34:43That sneaky jab where it was, like, half speed and then popping him with the

34:47jab. And you could see Lopez just couldn't get out of the way of it.

34:51He didn't know what to do.

34:53It was beautiful. It barely got hit.

34:55Yeah. It was beautiful. And things like that.

34:59You know, you see two high -caliber fighters, but you just see one just on

35:07a different level because of his boxing IQ.

35:11You know, not because Tiafimo didn't belong in the ring with him.

35:15It's just that Shakur IQ and his boxing ability is up here.

35:26and give Tiafimo the opportunity to land a good shot and change the outcome of

38:38And I'm fascinated because now they're talking about him and Ryan Garcia.

39:34You know, and he went out there and did it.

39:37Ryan looked spectacular in his fight.

39:39For what it was. I don't think Barrios came to fight.

39:43You know, Ryan was boxing great.

39:46You know, the jab was working.

39:48The overhand right was working.

39:52And he looks out at me at the end and said, you see my jab?

39:58I said, man, it was working.

40:00That jab was beautiful because we're not used to seeing Ryan jab.

40:09You know, he was boxing beautiful.

40:12Beautiful. You know, and I commend him on that.

40:13Like, he aced it. You know.

40:17But when it comes to Shakur, Shakur is not a Barrios.

40:21Right. You know, Shakur got a jab.

40:24Shakur got head movement. Shakur got defense.

40:28Shakur knows range. Shakur have good legs.

40:32So, I look at that fight like, it's not going to be as a competitive

40:40fight like everybody think. Because if Ryan get careless, he's going to get countered all

40:44day. If he gets careless.

40:46I think he'll fight very different than he fought with Barrios.

40:49He's got to. Barrios just couldn't keep up with the speed.

40:53I mean, Ryan's speed is extraordinary.

40:55He relies on it a lot.

40:57But, I mean, that's not a knock.

40:59That's just like, if you had it, everybody should rely on that.

41:02Shakur's not slow. Shakur's a different animal.

41:05That's what I'm saying. It's a different animal.

41:06Well, a lot of people thought Devin Haney was different, though, right?

41:09A lot of people thought Devin Haney was going to give him real problems.

41:12When he dropped Devin early with a left hook, everybody was like, oh, this is

41:16different. I wish he didn't have a positive drug test in that fight.

41:20Because that fucking tainted everything.

41:22They know each other far too well.

41:27I think him and Devin fought each other the most, out of all of them.

41:34You know, Shakur and Ryan fought as well, which Shakur won all the times that

41:39they fought. But I just think, you know, him and Devin, the history of it,

41:47Devin came in there overconfident.

41:52Ryan, you know, being juiced up, you know, added a little whatever it is.

41:58But, you know, you can't take away from him landing the punches that he was

42:03landing. You can't take away from the performance that, you know, he was doing.

42:11But when you're on steroids, that add to, you know.

42:16It definitely adds something. What did he get popped for?

42:19Do you remember? I don't even know.

42:21Jamie, find out what he got popped for.

42:23It was a very low level of whatever he got popped for.

42:26And a lot of people say, oh, the levels, it wouldn't even matter.

42:30It's such a small level.

42:31Well, the problem is there's a lot of ways you can mask the amount of

42:37steroids you have in your system.

42:38And that's one of the reasons why the UFC banned IVs.

42:42Because you can flush your body out if you super hydrate with IVs.

42:47I don't know what you're supposed to put in the IV.

42:49But there's some nutrients that you can put in IVs that will mask any traces

42:55of performance enhancing drugs, which is why at UFC, you have to hydrate.

43:00This is drug -free sports policy and USADA's policy.

43:03You have to hydrate only with drinking liquids.

43:06You can't hydrate with an IV.

43:08And when you use an IV, which I don't know, were they allowed to use

43:11IVs to rehydrate? I don't know.

43:12When you use IVs to rehydrate, you can mask a lot of shit.

43:16So if he did use an IV to rehydrate and he only showed a trace

43:21amount, that's still... What did he test positive for?

43:28Lost. I miss which fighter you're talking about.

43:33The fight got overturned, right?

43:35It was a no contest.

43:37Very unfortunate because it was a clear victory, one of his best victories ever.

44:32So Ryan's in a great position right now.

44:34If Gervonta comes back, he's got that rematch.

45:35Yeah. You know, I think guys who cut a tremendous amount of weight, they do

45:43What's the most you ever had to cut?

45:45The most I ever had to cut was probably like...

45:58And when did you start your cut?

46:01Woo. Months. Months out? Yeah.

46:03Months out. So the week of the fight, what were you at?

46:07Probably like 152, 54. Oh.

46:12Okay. Yeah. That's very good.

46:14Yeah. That's very reasonable. See, MMA fighters do it in a fucked up way.

46:18Them last couple of pounds is tough.

46:20Yeah. Them last couple of pounds are tough.

46:22And I just knew that it was over with.

46:27You know? But the hardest cut ever was when I was at 135.

46:34That was like killing me.

46:37What were you walking around at back then?

46:39Probably like in the 50s.

46:43Mm. Like 55. And so would you just lower your calories in camp?

46:51In camp? Everything. I got to change my whole diet.

46:55And then the week of the fight, what did you weigh when you were fighting

46:5835? I don't even remember.

47:02Man, I was cutting like probably like seven pounds the week of the fight.

47:11See, in the MMA world, that's nothing.

47:14These guys are cutting crazy pounds.

47:15Yeah, because they wait to the last minute.

47:17Yeah. I know a lot of MMA fighters.

47:19Yeah. They just dehydrate themselves.

47:21Yeah, they wait to the last minute.

47:22But mine, I got to start gradually because I never want to go in there

47:28and just like tank. Right.

47:31So I got to change my eating habits up months, like two months in advance.

47:37That way I can get my body used to being lighter and, you know, performing

47:41at that weight class. Because if not, you know, you're doing more hurting yourself than

47:47good because you're taking all the fluid out of your brain.

47:52Exactly. You know, and yeah, I couldn't be at no disadvantage like that.

47:58And it makes you more vulnerable to getting knocked out.

48:00Yeah. Definitely. I mean, Alex Pereira was the craziest example in the UFC.

48:04He was fighting at 185 and he would weigh 225 when he fought, which is

48:10bananas. I mean, that's 40 fucking pounds.

48:13I think that's why I got, when I fought Gamboa, when I got hurt, you

48:23know, in the ninth round.

48:24But I stopped him in the ninth round, but that was part of that.

48:28Boom, caught me with a clean shot.

48:30Boom. I was like, oh, shit.

48:33You know, until this day, that's the only fight that I got hurt like that

48:41ever. You know, a lot of people thought Mean Machine dropped me, Mean Machine hurt

48:46me. I didn't got, Mean Machine hit me with some hard shots, some clean hard

48:50shots, but nothing was like that Gamboa.

48:53Like my whole leg locked up.

48:54And I was just like, man, I got to grab this dude, you know.

48:58And you think the weight cut had a lot to do with that?

49:00Yeah. Definitely. What weight was that at?

49:02135. Yeah, 135. You're a big guy, man.

49:05That's a lot of weight to cut.

49:07Yeah. That's the most problematic part of MMA for sure.

49:13I was actually just having a conversation with Hunter Campbell about that.

49:16They're trying to devise strategies to discourage these big weight cuts and trying to figure

49:21out what to do. It was crazy, though, because I've always been skinny.

49:26You know, a lot of people, they say, oh, he's a weight bully.

49:29He's this, he's that. And it's like, bro, I came from 132.

49:34I wasn't at, you know, you see a lot of these fighters, they in the

49:39amateurs. Like Sean Porter, he was at 165, then he went to 147.

49:44You know, a lot of people, they was heavier, then they dropped weight.

49:47I was at 132, and I moved up.

49:51to go at 135, you know, as a professional.

49:55And I was cool with the weight.

49:57Then I just started filling out once I start, you know, working out more and

50:01doing a little strength and condition.

50:04And I just started, my body started filling out.

50:06So I kept moving up.

50:08But the weight that I was at with Canelo, that's the most comfortableest time of

50:15my career to be able to eat whatever I want, not focus on weight, just

50:22work out. Did you feel much better in the ring because of that?

50:24I did. I did because that was the only time that I never, like I

50:30had to eat to keep my weight on.

50:33Wow. And it's like, I'm not used to doing that.

50:37Like I'm used to, you know.

50:40Starving. We got portions. It's like they feed me big meals.

50:43I'm like, I can't eat all this, you know.

50:45But so that was the one camp that it was like the weight wasn't an

50:53issue. Do you have a nutritionist in camp?

50:54And so how do they do your meals?

50:57Is it all based on X amount of protein, X amount of carbs, it's all

51:02weighed out? All that. Yeah.

51:04Yeah. And then they weigh you, check you, make your body fat.

51:06They ask me what I weigh in the morning, every morning.

51:09What did you weigh like when you got into the ring?

51:13I think I was like 72.

51:15Okay. Yeah. It's just a few pounds.

51:17Yeah. Nothing. Yeah. Yeah. I didn't weigh.

51:21I didn't weigh. I probably was a couple of pounds.

51:23Yeah. The only difference in MMA is obviously the grappling, you know, and that's it.

51:29It plays a big advantage if you can get a lot of weight on a

51:32guy. That's why a lot of guys do it.

51:34It's also, MMA is very flawed, and one of the most flawed aspects of it

51:39is the weight classes. There's just not enough weight classes.

51:42Yeah. There's giant leaps. Like between 205, the next weight class is heavyweight.

51:49So it's 205 to 265.

51:52185, the next weight class is 205.

51:55That's 20 pounds. That's nuts.

51:58Yeah. 170 to 185. 15 fucking pounds is a lot.

52:01A lot. That's a lot.

52:02Seven pounds is a lot.

52:0355 to 70. Yeah. Seven pounds is a lot.

52:06A lot of people don't know, but I was way stronger at 47 than I

52:10was at 40. And that's only seven pounds.

52:12Right. That's seven pounds of muscle that I don't have to cut.

52:16Right. Yeah. And a lot of people think, oh, it's just seven pounds or 135

52:20to 140. It's just five pounds.

52:23Oh, that matters. Yes. It matters a lot.

52:25And for fighters, there's a lot of guys that are tweeners.

52:29They're too big for 155.

52:31They can't make the weight.

52:32And then they're too small for 170.

52:34Yes. Because at 170, you got guys that are never going to make 155.

52:38They're coming down from 210, and they're getting to 170, and they're jacked.

52:42I know somebody that was coming out from 230, fighting at 165.

52:47Oh, my God. Who was that?

52:51I ain't going to say his name.

52:52Well, Anthony Rumble Johnson was the craziest one that I ever saw.

52:56230. Anthony Rumble Johnson was 230, and he was fighting at 170.

53:00I ran into Rumble once, rest in peace.

53:02He died a few years back.

53:04I ran into Rumble once when he was fighting at 170, and he was in

53:09between fights, and I ran into him at the hotel, and he was a fucking

53:12heavyweight. He was so big.

53:14I couldn't. I go, what do you weigh?

53:16Yeah. And he said, 230.

53:17I'm like, dude, that's crazy.

53:20You have to cut 60 pounds?

53:22Yeah. But it was killing him.

53:24It was killing him. Like, literally to the brink of death, the day before a

53:29fight. That's nuts. That doesn't make any sense.

53:32And they were all doing it, because they all felt like they had to be

53:35the biggest guy in there.

53:36Yeah. Not smart. No. At all.

53:40I think for MMA, they really need to recognize this, that one of the things

53:46that's going to stop weight clots is give people more weight classes.

53:49Give people more options. This idea of only having eight champions, I think, in MMA

53:55is very, very limiting. It's also limiting the potential of a guy like you to

53:59go up and up and up and win championship after championship.

54:03In MMA, if you win two belts, that's crazy.

54:06That's the only thing anybody's ever done.

54:06Because the weight classes are so far apart.

54:08Exactly. The only people that have ever done it have done it in two weight

54:13classes. No one's done it in three.

54:14You know, Pereira might try to do it at heavyweight.

54:17He might try to go up to heavyweight now, because he's walking around like 240.

54:20Which is crazy, because he used to fight at 185.

54:23It's nuts. But if they had more options and they had more weight classes, I

54:29think we'd have more competitive fights.

54:30We'd have less extreme weight cutting.

54:32We'd have healthier fighters. Just more champions is better.

54:37There's a lot of guys that could be champions.

54:39There's not a weight class for them.

54:41If there's a 20 -pound gap, 20 pounds is so much.

1:00:38you're in a world title fight or you're in Golden Boy promotions, you would imagine

1:00:44now I'm getting paid more money.

1:00:49Like, these other organizations like the PFL have to pay these guys more money because

1:00:52otherwise they can't get them at all.

1:00:54Because everybody wants to fight in the UFC.

1:01:02There's some organizations in Russia and other parts of the world.

1:03:45do or a manager or anybody else, it's all you disloyal, you this, you that.

1:03:52It doesn't make any sense in boxing because in boxing there's so many promoters.

1:03:58There's Eddie Hearns, Bob Arum.

1:04:04That's the beauty of boxing is that there's a lot of competition and there's a

1:04:08lot of people that are there to try to get you over onto their side.

1:04:13And there's cross promotion. There's no cross promotion in MMA.

1:04:16It doesn't exist. They tried it a little bit in the early days.

1:04:20They sent some UFC fighters over to Japan to fight for pride, and they brought

1:04:24some pride fighters over into the UFC, but they don't do that anymore.

1:04:29That was the early days because the sport wasn't big back then.

1:04:32And they were just trying to get big names, and they were trying to work

1:04:36a promotional deal. But Japanese, man, they're clever.

1:04:40Like when they sold them pride, they thought they were getting all the fighters.

1:04:44It turned out all the contracts were bullshit.

1:04:46None of them were valid.

1:04:47They basically bought pride for I think they spent $65 million, and they got a

1:04:51library. They just got a video library.

1:04:55UFC did? Yeah, they didn't get shit.

1:04:57They didn't get Fedor. Fedor was the big dog.

1:05:00At one point in time, he was fucking everybody up, slamming them, armbarring them, fucking

1:05:08people up, standing. He was complete.

1:05:11And he was at the same time where Cain Velasquez was in his prime, and

1:05:16that was the fight that they tried to put together.

1:05:18But the Russians, because the UFC didn't have a contract with Fedor anymore because the

1:05:24contracts with pride were all bullshit, that they had to deal with, you know, these

1:05:28Russian gangsters. And these Russian gangsters were like, you know, they wanted a piece of

1:05:32the promotion. They wanted a lot.

1:05:34And the UFC wasn't willing.

1:05:35It got very contentious. Like the UFC had to up their security.

1:10:12like when they look at him like flying economy he was sleeping at the stadium

1:12:50you have such a small window of time i mean a lot of men don't

1:12:55even make their real money until they're deep in their 40s and 50s or the

1:12:58end of the 30s yeah yeah look at floyd when he fought de la hoya

1:13:04then he fought uh gotti then he started making some real money yes you know

1:13:12but i mean that's for a pro athlete but for most of these like really

1:13:16wealthy business people that most of them unless they're tech investors oh yeah they're making

1:13:22their money later in life and so you have all this opportunity to keep growing

1:13:26your wealth but when you're an athlete you got a small window of your prime

1:13:30your prime is essentially like maybe 20 years maybe 20 years you can make money

1:13:36from 20 to 40 but one for a pro athlete unless you're tom brady 40

1:13:41is the end or unless you're bernard bernard was fighting at a world -class level

1:13:47at 49 50 years old which is crazy crazy that's because he take care of

1:13:52his body 100 you don't put nothing super disciplined never gets out of shape never

1:13:57puts any bullshit in his body and also that mindset of what what he learned

1:14:03when he was incarcerated like that like discipline is everything discipline discipline never knowing you're

1:14:10never going back to that don't buy anything stupid don't be done with your money

1:14:14don't be done with your body take care of yourself never get out of shape

1:14:18always keep your conditioning up so when you go into camp you're not struggling to

1:14:22get back in shape again you're already in shape now you're just working on your

1:14:25skills and honing everything to a razor sharp edge i think that goes to like

1:14:31i said before the people that you have around you you know that want to

1:14:35see you be successful and the people that you can learn from and the people

1:14:39that you can get advice from you know when they see you about to do

1:14:44something that you shouldn't do they be like hey man we we ain't doing that

1:14:47come on let's go or you I don't know.

1:14:49They'll call you, be like, let's go run, I'm not doing nothing, let's go jog,

1:14:53or let's go to the gym, or let's go eat some healthy food.

1:14:57People that want to see you be successful, not the ones that say, hey, let's

1:15:01go party, let's go drink, let's go do this.

1:15:04Let's do cocaine, yeah. I think those are the people that you need to get

1:15:08from around you. 100%. The ones that see you doing things that you shouldn't be

1:15:13doing, but that's cool with them seeing you doing that.

1:15:56So knowing that you're going to be fighting at 168 instead of 54 or 47,

1:16:00what did you do different in terms of, did you do anything different about strength

1:16:06and conditioning? How long did you prepare?

1:16:09Like, I know you were thinking about that fight for a long time, but, like,

1:16:13when you were physically preparing for it, knowing that you were going to be fighting

1:16:16him at 68, what did you do different?

1:16:18To be honest, I didn't do nothing different.

1:16:20Really? It's crazy. Like, all my fights, there's nothing different.

1:16:25You know, we trained for me, me getting sharper, what I need to work on,

1:16:31what I'm lacking in. But the only thing that I changed for the fight with

1:16:36Canelo is Chet, my strength and conditioning coach, he got me in February.

1:16:43He called me up. He's like, hey, we're going to get this fight.

1:16:46He just kept saying, we're going to get it.

1:16:47So you need to be working out now.

1:16:51So this way before I ever got the Canelo fight, so I'm like, all right,

1:16:55so he'll come over to my house.

1:16:56We'll work out. We'll work out.

1:16:57We'll work out. What kind of stuff were you doing?

1:16:59Just strength work. Just strength work.

1:17:01Like deadlifts? Like what kind of stuff?

1:17:03Yeah, deadlifts, strength condition, like deadlifts, working on good legs and things like that, and

1:17:08just getting my body just, you know, back to where it needed to be, you

1:17:12know. And he's just like, man, you got to strengthen up your shoulders and things

1:17:17like that, and because quiet is kept, I had just had shoulder surgery.

1:17:23You did? Yeah. So I just, you know, there's a lot of things that I

1:17:28go through in training, but I don't speak about because I don't never want it

1:17:34to be an excuse, you know.

1:17:38That's just one of the injuries that I was coming off of.

1:17:42But, yeah, and he was just like, man, we got to work.

1:17:45We got to work. So what was the shoulder injury?

1:17:47Labrum. Labrum. Yeah. Yeah. So did you get it sewed back up?

1:17:51Yeah. Did you get stem cells shot in there at all?

1:17:53No, no, no. No? I just had surgery on the front and the back.

1:19:20Oh, nothing different. Like, running, swimming, things like that.

1:19:25And you didn't try to put on any weight?

1:19:28Just tried to, like, be able to walk around the way it is?

1:19:30Just tighten it up, you know, with the strength work.

1:44:10I had a full length rotator cuff tear.

1:44:13I went to the doctor six months after the stem cells.

1:44:16He's like, this is the craziest thing I've ever seen.

1:44:18He's like, that tear doesn't even exist anymore.

1:44:20It's gone. Completely healed. It's crazy.

1:44:25Like, stem cells are nuts, man.

1:44:27And they're getting better at it all the time.

1:44:29Like, it's just, pharmaceutical drug companies fucking hate it.

1:44:34Surgeons hate it. Like, doctors hate it.

1:44:36Because it's going to, it's going to cost them money.

1:44:39Yeah, it's going to take away their money.

1:44:40Yeah. There's a bunch of people that are going to get treated with stem cells

1:44:42that don't need surgery. Right.

1:44:44And afterwards, they're like, oh, I'm good.

1:44:47Because the doctor's like, when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a

1:44:51nail. And these doctors, the way they make their money is cutting you.

1:44:55And they all want to cut you.

1:44:57And it's amazing how many different, especially soft tissue injuries, how many different injuries you

1:45:03can heal with stem cells.

1:45:04It's pretty remarkable. My doctors try to avoid cutting me.

1:45:09So they waited all the way till.

1:52:26need to be appreciative of him because without him, none of those fights would have

1:52:31happened. 100%. The Canelo fight wouldn't have happened for me.

1:52:41I think that's very exciting.

1:52:43But that's what the sport needed.

1:52:45It needed someone to come in with deep pockets that just said, let's make these

1:52:50fights happen. And I think that's why, you know, boxing is on a rise right

1:52:55now. People was talking about boxing more.

1:52:58People is more supportive about boxing now.

1:53:01And people is tuning into not only Riyadh season shows, but all shows.

1:53:06Look at Clarissa. Yep. She just put on a hell of a performance.

1:53:10Hell of a performance. And it was rocking in that moment.

1:53:13Yeah. It was crazy. It was sold out over 16 ,000 people as a woman.

1:53:20And people don't give women enough credit.

1:54:48But when he was with her, he was phenomenal.

1:54:52When he undefeated with her?

1:54:53I think he was undefeated with her.

1:54:54And she wasn't with him when he fought Canelo, unfortunately.

1:54:58A couple of fights, I don't think she was with him.

1:55:00Well, I think it was too much.

1:55:02Like, it was too hard.

1:55:03Like, he didn't want to do it.

1:55:06She's a tough lady, man.

1:55:08She would put you through some fucking hell.

1:55:10Her training, like, there's some videos of her putting Kirkland through training camp.

1:55:14And I was like, my God.

1:55:16And for a woman. Show.

1:55:18To be able to do that.

1:55:19You know? It just shows you how impressive she was.

1:55:21How special she was. But his performances showed as well.

1:55:25Yes. You know? Yes. Because she was getting in his mind as well as physical.

1:55:30Yes. You know? And taking everything from him.

1:55:36And now he's training. It was kind of like Rocky.

1:55:41All you're doing is work, eat, sleep.

1:55:46And it's just like, damn.

1:55:47I got into old boxing footage real recently over the last, like, six months.

1:55:53I've been watching a lot of old camps.

1:55:55And there's some great YouTube channels that shows Hagler's camps.

1:55:59Mm -hmm. And Hagler's camps were phenomenal.

1:56:01It was so good. Like, Hagler was rich.

1:56:04And he would go to Provincetown, this shitty little fucking town on the Cape.

1:56:09No disrespect, Provincetown. I'm just saying.

1:56:11And compared to where he could be.

1:56:13Yeah. I mean, he could be in New York City.

1:56:14He could be anywhere he wanted.

1:56:15But he would go to this small town in the middle of fucking nowhere and

1:56:19run on the beach and live in a room with no TV, no nothing, just

1:56:24eat, sleep, train. He was sparring 100 rounds a week.

1:56:28I mean, it was wild.

1:56:30Watching him train was incredible.

1:56:32It was incredible. And when he would get into that ring, there was no stone

1:56:37unturned. No stone unturned. And it was just all discipline and drive and focus.

1:56:46And he was another guy.

1:56:47Didn't get his due. Didn't get his due until he stopped, really, until he stopped

1:56:51Hearns. That's when people really woke up.

1:56:54You know, all the inside boxing people were very aware.

1:56:57But it took a while.

1:56:59It took a while before the rest of the world caught up.

1:57:01Because it wasn't flashy. Yeah.

1:57:02It wasn't flashy. Just dominate.

1:57:05Yeah. Just break people's wills.

1:57:06The Mugabe fight to this day is one of my favorite fights of all time.

1:57:10Because Mugabe was putting people in the hospital.

1:57:13That was tough. Oh, my God.

1:57:15Mugabe hit so fucking hard.

1:57:17But that was the other thing about Hagler, man.

1:57:19Had a chin from hell.

1:57:21You know, Hagler had extraordinary mandible muscles.

1:57:25They did a CAT scan on him, like a scan of his head.

1:57:28They said the muscles on the side of his head.

1:57:31It's like he was born with headgear.

1:57:33Or he developed it just from biting down on a mouthpiece for so long.

1:57:37They're aww. Yeah. But I love watching those old school training footage videos.

1:57:43Like there's some great ones of Sugar Ray Robinson running in the mountains and hitting

1:57:48the bag and training and all the calisthenics that he had to do.

1:57:52I think more people should see stuff like that just to appreciate the amount of

1:57:59discipline and work that it takes to get into peak condition for a fight.

1:58:04Because I just don't think they understand what your mind has to go through to

1:58:09get up for that every day over and over and over and over and over

1:58:13until you're finally in the ring.

1:58:15Like the ring is almost the easy part.

1:58:18The easiest. It's tough. It's like, you know, when we in Colorado and we got

1:58:26to run the mountain, like sometimes I'll be like, man, I ain't running this mountain.

1:58:31I don't care. And then they'd be like, you're going to get your ass up.

1:58:36You better get your ass up.

1:58:38Or Bo would come in there and be like, let's go.

1:58:41I'd be like, man, Bo, let's go.

1:58:45Bo got this saying, anytime I'm giving him some push, he'd be like, I'm not

1:58:50about to argue with you for you to be great.

1:58:52Let's go. I'd be like, that's great to have someone with you.

1:58:56Hey, right. I'd be like, here we go.

1:58:58He's been with you from the beginning?

1:58:59From the start. That's so big, too.

1:59:01And it's crazy because the days that I don't want to do nothing is the

1:59:05craziest days that I do the best.

1:59:11Because you conquered that inner bitch, that thing inside you that wants to not do

1:59:16it. I'm the fucking man.

1:59:18Yeah, Stephen would be like, when you don't want to do something, it's like you're

1:59:24trying to hurry up and get it over with, so you're trying to do it

1:59:26fast. So my best times is when I don't want to do it.

1:59:31Like, my best sparring is when I don't want to spar.

1:59:34Because it's like, I'm like, all right, I'm going to fuck you up because I

1:59:36ain't about to play with you.

1:59:37I ain't about to go in here doing all this extra shit.

1:59:40You know, I don't want to get hit.

1:59:42You know, so it's like your best days is when you don't want to do

1:59:46it. Yeah. You know, that's when I perform the best in the gym and stuff

1:59:51like that. So, yeah, man, a lot of young fighters, when they come and see

1:59:56my training, they see what I go through three times a day.

2:00:01So it's eat, sleep, shit, work.

2:00:05You know, they're like, man, you train too hard.

2:00:08I'm like, ain't no such thing.

2:00:10You know, Tim Bradley told me, hey, man, you got to rest.

2:00:14You got to chill out.

2:00:16Andre Ward, man, you got to rest.

2:00:19You know, and these last two training camps, I took on their advice and took

2:00:28it just a day off, like in a week, like every week.

2:00:32Instead of training seven days a week, I take one day off just not doing

2:00:38nothing, and it helped me tremendously on my recovery.

2:00:41Really? Because I used to just do active rest on Sunday.

2:00:46We would do the incline.

2:00:47We'd just do the incline, that's it, in the morning, early in the morning, and

2:00:51then we'd have the whole day to recover.

2:00:54But he like, no, you got to just take the whole day off, not doing

2:01:00nothing, just recover. And as you get, as I got older, you know, my last

2:01:05two training camps, I took that advice, and it's just like, man.

2:01:10I'm like, man, I could have did this years ago.

2:01:14I was just so, like, locked in.

2:01:16And then, like, if I take a day off, they going to have a day

2:01:21up on me, you know?

2:01:23And I was just like, I can't do that.

2:01:24I was just working. Well, it's a fine line where there's a point of diminishing

2:01:29returns, where you put in too much work.

2:01:32Like, seeing a guy fight when he's over -trained is one of the saddest things

2:01:36ever. It's like his drive actually fucked him.

2:01:39Yeah. I've seen it before.

2:01:41In MMA, it happens all the time.

2:01:43Especially guys who don't use heart rate monitors, don't monitor their resting heart rate when

2:01:48they get up in the morning.

2:01:49I used that in my last two camps.

2:01:51And that was the only two camps you did that?

2:01:53My last two camps. Wow, interesting, interesting.

2:01:56So, like, everything was visual with my coaches because they've been with me so long.

2:02:03Right. So they know when to pull back.

2:02:06Right. Like, some days they'll be like, all right, you know.

2:02:09You're peaking. You did four rounds.

2:02:11Nah, we done. Like, man, I got eight rounds today.

2:02:14Ah, you good. Be like, what?

2:02:17You good. Don't worry about it.

2:02:19We'll come back tomorrow. You know, and I'll be like, all right.

2:02:21You know, I will never question them.

2:02:23Right. You know, or we come in there and they'll be like, all right, today

2:02:26we're just going to shadow box and we're going to hit the mitts.

2:02:29But I never questioned them.

2:02:30But they already knew by watching me, you know, along the weeks to pull me

2:02:35back, when to pull me back.

2:02:36Yeah. Then it started getting, you know, to me.

2:02:40And I'm like, oh, okay.

2:02:41So now I know that.

2:02:42Like, they not going to let me overtrain because they know I'm going to give

2:02:47it my all every time I train, anything I do.

2:02:50So they just pull me back.

2:02:51Like, all right, well, we're going to just do yoga today and we're going to

2:02:55do boxing work. We ain't going to do no, you know, strength and conditioning or

2:02:59we're not going to do no road work or we're just going to swim.

2:03:02We're not, instead of running, we're going to swim.

2:03:05You know, so some days they're flip -flop.

2:03:08That's the beauty of having a really good trainer.

2:03:11Yeah, for sure. And someone who's really paying attention to you and knows you, like,

2:03:16knows the signs, knows when you're a little sluggish, knows when you're peaking a little

2:03:20early. Yeah. Before you bet, yeah.

2:03:23And anybody say that you train too hard, it's like, compared to who?

2:03:27Compared to who? You know, like, it's whether or not you've built your body up

2:03:32to the point where you're doing that for so many years that your body's conditioned

2:03:36to go that hard. You know, because there's people that used to say that if

2:03:39you run a marathon, like, you need, like, six months off.

2:03:42I had a friend, it was my friend Cameron Haynes, he runs ultra marathons.

2:03:46When he was training for a 250 -mile run, he was running a marathon every

2:03:49day. Every day. Most people, the conventional wisdom was you can't do that.

2:03:55Yeah, you can. Yeah. You just got to get up to that.

2:03:59So if a fighter is slacking off in between camps and getting fat and drinking

2:04:03and fucking off, and then they get back into camp, yeah, you can't do three

2:04:07hard a day like that.

2:04:08But if you're already in shape, and you're already conditioned, and you have built up

2:04:12this base of years and years of doing this, your conditioning will be so much

2:04:17better. One of the things that I notice in young fighters in particular, especially in

2:04:21MMA, is how tired they get in a three -round fight.

2:04:26Just a three -round MMA fight, how tired they get.

2:04:29And I'm sure they train hard, but they don't train as hard as these guys

2:04:33who don't get tired in a five -round fight.

2:04:35So what is the difference?

2:04:36Well, it's the years and years of building up that cardio base, not fucking up

2:04:41your body, not partying. Knowing how to breathe.

2:04:44Uh -huh. That's the thing.

2:04:45Being efficient, yeah. Because when I, my first time at the UFC, when I did

2:04:54strength and condition, you know, I was like, man, I'm not getting nothing out of

2:04:59it, it's easy. And it was like, well, it's not meant to break you or

2:05:04kill you. You're going to see the difference.

2:05:08And I'm just like, man, when I'm doing UFC back at home, like, I'm sore.

2:05:15Like, I'm not sore, you know, the next day when I'm doing strength and condition

2:05:20here. But, like, gradually you start seeing the results.

2:05:25Right. You know, and it's like, damn, you know.

2:05:27And it's a science behind it.

2:05:29Yes. You know, and I was just like, in my mind, I'm like, man, I'm

2:05:33not working hard enough because I'm used to working hard and I'm going home and

2:05:39I'm like, oh, that was a good workout.

2:05:40I feel it. Like, psychologically, I'm like, I don't feel like I did nothing, you

2:05:47know, because my body is in so in shape.

2:05:50You know, I'm like, man, I need to do more.

2:05:52And they're like, you're good.

2:05:53You did a lot today.

2:05:54You know, I'm like, all right.

2:05:56So, like, gradually I'm starting to see the effects.

2:06:00Mm -hmm. You know, I'm like, oh, okay.

2:06:03So, maybe he was working me out too hard.

2:06:06You know, and I'm getting stronger and everything.

2:06:08I'm just like, okay. You know, it's all a science.

2:06:12It really is a science.

2:06:14And, you know, the problem with fighters is, especially elite fighters, is they're so driven.

2:06:20You know, and sometimes you can't let the dragon off the chain.

2:06:23Yeah. You know, like, slow down.

2:06:25Yeah, slow down. You got to do this.

2:06:27We got to progress. Yes.

2:06:28Progress over time. And get to that perfect point the week before the fight where

2:06:33you just settle in and then fight time.

2:06:37That's my guy, Gavin. Gavin just like, oh, don't worry.

2:06:43Steps. That's the beautiful thing about having someone that you can trust that really knows

2:06:46what they're doing. Yeah. And, you know, there's a lot of young fighters that are

2:06:49just all gas, no brakes.

2:06:51And they might be costing themselves a little bit.

2:06:53But then there's a lot of lazy fighters like, yeah, I don't want to overtrain.

2:06:56Yeah. Like, no, no, no.

2:06:57You're under training. That's why you get tired all the time.

2:07:00You're not in good enough shape to be doing the proper workout that you need

2:07:04to do to really prepare for a fight.

2:07:11It takes forever. You know, that's why, like, a lot of fighters, they reach their

2:07:16prime when they get into their 30s because they get it all dialed in.

2:07:19They know what they need.

2:07:20They know what they need to do.

2:07:22They know what a camp really feels like.

2:07:24They prepare for it. Being nerd.

2:07:27The experience. Yeah. You know, so, yeah, they definitely know their body.

2:07:33They know when they're in shape, when they're out of shape, what they need, when

2:07:38they need a little more.

2:07:41Experience is the best teacher, I would say.

2:07:44Well, experience and then listening to people like you, that's a big factor.

2:07:49Listening to people that have done it all and, you know, and that wisdom, the

2:07:54things that you've said on this podcast today, I guarantee you right now there are

2:07:58hundreds of thousands of fucking future fighters that are listening to this right now and

2:08:04that are probably, like, taking it all in.

2:08:06And, okay, because, you know, in the early days, you don't know what the fuck

2:08:09to do. You don't know what.

2:08:11What's the right approach? Is his approach?

2:08:14Is his approach? Like, what's the right mentality?

2:08:16What's the right mindset? Who are the right coaches?

2:08:19Which is a big factor.

2:08:21You get a bad coach and get stuck with a bad coach and it'll limit

2:08:25your development. Yeah, for sure.

2:08:27For sure. And that goes back to styles.

2:08:31When I said I was trying to coach everybody to the same style when everybody

2:08:37ain't meant to be trained the same.

2:08:40Everybody don't have the same, you know, mental capacity to process things the same way.

2:08:47Some people process things different.

2:08:49That's kind of like yelling at a fighter.

2:08:51You know, that motivated me.

2:08:54Sometimes that break fighters, they're like, ha -ha, I'm getting you out of that.

2:08:57I'm doing something wrong. And, you know, so we look at them like, man, toughen

2:09:03up, you know. But nowadays it's different.

2:09:06Like, everything don't flock the same with one fighter like a dude the same with

2:09:13the other fighter. No, you got to figure out what gets your fighter going.

2:09:16Yeah. Yeah. And that's another interesting dance.

2:09:20I don't envy those people because your livelihood depends upon another person performing, which is

2:09:27kind of crazy. It's a crazy way to live your life.

2:09:30That's any sports. Yep. Like I always say, sometimes I blame the coaches.

2:09:36But for the most part, the players and the fighters and the athletes, they got

2:09:41to go out there and perform.

2:09:42I can tell you go out there and do this.

2:09:45But if you don't go do it, then that's on you.

2:09:48Right. Now, coaches, they can make, I mean, they can get outcoached.

2:09:52They can call the wrong plays at the wrong times.

2:09:55Different like that. But all in all, if he go out there and miss a

2:09:59tackle, if he go out there and not catch the ball, why am I getting

2:10:02fired? They're going to blame me.

2:10:06You know what I mean?

2:10:07Yeah, that's true. Hey, I can't make him hit the three.

2:10:10I can't make him, you know, D up.

2:10:12So I'm getting fired because they're not performing.

2:10:16You're also getting fired by people that don't totally understand all the subtle nuances of

2:10:23what you do if you're a coach.

2:10:24Yeah. Like if they're not a coach, how could you really understand?

2:10:28If you're not day in, day out with these athletes in their head, working with

2:10:33them, seeing what they're doing, improving upon their strengths, strengthening their weaknesses.

2:10:37If you're not doing that, you just are seeing results.

2:10:40That's all you see. You're judging based on results.

2:10:43And you don't really know who's a good coach and who's not.

2:10:47Because if you're a good coach, you've got shit athletes.

2:10:49Yeah. You can only go so far.

2:10:51That's it. And it's tough.

2:10:53Yeah. It's tough to, you know, go across the middle and try to catch a

2:10:57bullet when you know the safety.

2:10:59Coming later, the crazy slap on you, you know, and it's crazy to go up,

2:11:06you know, on a seven -footer trying to shoot a three.

2:11:10Like, it's hard at a professional level to do what these athletes is doing, but

2:11:16they're making it seem like it's easy on the outside for us.

2:11:20And we're like, man, you didn't catch the ball.

2:11:22It's like, man, you try to catch that ball with three people, you know what

2:11:27I mean, on you, you know, coming full speed, and you got to worry about

2:11:31getting your feet inbounds and things like that.

2:11:34It's so much. Well, it's like T .F .E.

2:11:35Moe's corner during the secure fight.

2:11:36You got to hit him.

2:11:38You got to hit him.

2:11:39Like, what do you think I'm trying to do?

2:11:41Tell me how to hit him.

2:11:43Tell me how to set up to him.

2:11:45Don't just tell me you got to hit him, you know.

2:11:48And that goes into saying that everybody shouldn't be a coach, you know, because now

2:11:55you're not giving me no instructions.

2:11:59You're going off of emotions.

2:12:00Right. And you're just telling me, hey, you got to hit him.

2:12:03You're not hitting him. What are you doing?

2:12:05Yeah. Now, what if T .O.

2:12:07would have said, what is you doing?

2:12:09Because you're not telling me nothing.

2:12:10Right. You see me trying to hit him, but he's moving, you know.

2:12:14Like, what am I supposed to do?

2:12:15I'm swinging, and I'm missing.

2:12:17Right. So tell me how to set it up to him.

2:12:20But there's really nothing anybody could have told him.

2:12:24Yeah. The gap was just too wide at that point.

2:12:27Right. Yeah. They should have studied more in training.

2:12:31But even then, it's like the problem is years.

2:12:35It's years of advancement. It's years of intelligent boxing.

2:12:39It's years of setups. It's years of skills.

2:12:42I think when a fighter have a good coach that's knowledgeable, and they believe in

2:12:49a coach, and a coach asks them to do something, and they believe that that's

2:12:55going to work, they'll try it.

2:12:58You know, if your coach tell you, all right, listen, he's stepping back every time

2:13:03you step in. And so that means for every time he step back, you got

2:13:07to step in twice and double the jab and close the distance and let your

2:13:11hands go when you get in range.

2:13:13And that fighter go out there and do what the coach asked him to do,

2:13:16and he's successful, then that's a different ballgame.

2:13:20That's a different ballgame. Because now you're listening to your coach, but your coach is

2:13:23seeing what the other fighter is doing that's making him be more successful.

2:13:28Technical instruction. There you go.

2:13:30Yeah. You can't just go out there and hit him.

2:13:33That's crazy. Tell me how to do it.

2:13:34I hear that shit in the corner.

2:13:36I'm like, good Lord, what are you saying?

2:13:38You hear it in MMA all the time.

2:13:40You got to put it on him.

2:13:42Oh, oh, I didn't know.

2:13:44Oh, I got to put it on him.

2:13:46All this time I was hoping it would just happen.
