3:47I am Mary Catherine. And I'm Carol Markowitz.

3:50How was your weekend, Mary Catherine?

3:52It was good. I chill out.

3:54The foreign policy does not chill out.

3:56I chill out a little bit over the weekend.

3:58And then you and I have to scramble on Sunday and Monday to get back.

4:03What happened? What is all this?

4:05I went shooting yesterday and I'm very excited about it with, like, my Florida crew.

4:11Buck Sexton led the operation.

4:13It was awesome. At, like, an outdoor range, middle of nowhere.

4:17It's really, really great. And shot a bunch of different kinds of guns.

4:22I learned that wearing Lululemon joggers to the range is a bad idea if you're

4:26planning to holster your gun.

4:29There was a lot of jokes at my expense, which I took like a champ.

4:33There you go. It was so much fun.

4:35We, by the way, are remiss in not having on our list the fact that

4:39the NRA released an ad focused on arming the Jews, which we love to see.

4:44Love it. Love it. Love it.

4:46It was like the I forgot what it's called.

4:47Locks and loaded. Yeah. I mean, I can't argue with that branding.

4:53I know. I love that.

4:55Yeah. I'm very into the idea of Jews owning guns.

4:59It's still a real challenge because whenever I speak to Jewish groups and I talk

5:03very positively about owning guns and going shooting and having a gun and all of

5:08that, I get gasps in the room.

5:10Like, what planet is this that Jews are having this conversation?

5:15And I'm like, it's planet 2026 Earth.

5:18Yeah. So. Yeah. It is a, it is a practical need, unfortunately.

5:23And I do think people get intimidated because.

5:26They're like, but I don't know how to do this.

5:28But you know what? You can practice doing it and you can get better at

5:31it. Yeah. I wrote a piece about, you know, my own gun ownership at one

5:36point. I think it was on my sub stack.

5:37But it was like, don't just buy a gun, become a gun person because it's

5:41like buying a car. You can't just be like, I bought a car, therefore I

5:45know how to drive. That's not how it works.

5:48So, yeah, you got to train yourself.

5:50Yep. Yep. Alrighty. Well, what's going on in the world, Carol?

5:55What is going on in the world?

5:57You know, I sent you this tweet this morning because I felt like I really

6:00summed it up. Aviva Klompas on X.

6:02She's a great person to follow.

6:04She wrote, for those just waking up, there may or may not be a ceasefire.

6:07There may or may not be talks between the U .S.

6:09and Iran. There may or may not be ships moving through the Straits of Hormuz.

6:13And there may or may not be peace talks between Israel and Lebanon.

6:17So that's where we are on this delightful Monday.

6:21Yeah, it sounds like, you know, there was the blocking of the Straits of Hormuz

6:25by Iran and then there was the responding blockade from Trump and the U .S.

6:31Navy. And now, apparently, in the early hours of the morning, an Iranian ship was

6:37seized after not observing the blockade.

6:41And Iran is saying, no, the Straits will not be open.

6:44So it is. There's a lot going on.

6:47There are a lot of possibilities on the table for this week.

6:50And one of the issues that our friend Eli Lake, writing at the Free Press,

6:53points out is that Trump and the negotiators who might be headed back to Islamabad

6:59are not sure who's speaking for Iran right now, which is partly a problem of

7:04our own making, which is that people just keep getting killed off.

7:07And so you don't know exactly who's in charge.

7:09But it seems like there's a power struggle going on between the people who are

7:14talking to the U .S.

7:15last time and the people who might talk to the U .S.

7:18this time. And they're trying to fight that out.

7:21Yeah. When you kill all the top brass, it gets difficult to see who should

7:27be making decisions for Iran.

7:28And that's been, I think, also the issue a little bit for the last week

7:33or so, where we don't know who's in charge and we don't know who's speaking

7:37for them because it appeared when we last when we last left the audience that

7:42we were had some sort of agreement.

7:47And now it's like, do we?

7:48And apparently the U .S.

7:50is heading back to Pakistan.

7:52And I think J .D.

7:54Vance is not going, but Trump is adamant that it has nothing to do with

7:58him. It's because of security risks, which is plausible.

8:03It's definitely possible. Or he could just be saying that.

8:07We really just don't know.

8:09Trump Truth Social. We're offering a very fair and reasonable deal.

8:12And I hope they take it because if they don't, the United States is going

8:15to knock out every single power plant and every single bridge in Iran.

8:18No more Mr. Nice Guy.

8:20All caps. It is interesting that there's a change in the negotiators for this round,

8:25as you point out. But well, it's only minus Vance, right?

8:33It's still Whitcoff and it's still Kushner.

8:36There's just no Vance this time around, which I don't know.

8:40I mean, you know, we talk about this on here that Vance gets some unfair

8:44readings. And I try my very best because I'm also partial to those readings of

8:50it, that Vance perhaps is not on board with this, that Vance is more aligned

8:55with the podcast to stand people that Trump openly bashes.

8:59Because that's all possible. But I do try to give him the benefit of the

9:04doubt because we just don't know because he just doesn't say.

9:07And, you know, is he not going to Pakistan because Trump has lost faith in

9:11him because he thinks that leaks are coming out of his office?

9:14Because that's the speculation. But again, is it unfair to him to speculate like that

9:19when it really could be just a security risk?

9:22I thought Baseball Crank made a very concise point about Vance's role in these things.

9:28So it's a pretty clear pattern by now.

9:29When we negotiate with our allies, Vance is bad cop.

9:32Rubio is good cop. When we negotiate with our enemies, Rubio is bad cop.

9:36Vance is good cop. And nobody wants them to call in the boss.

9:39I love that. I love that tweet.

9:41Yeah. But it's funny because Rubio is not going.

9:44And I know that's also like, hmm, what does this mean?

9:47His absence has been interesting.

9:49Did you see this New York Post piece that is written by a centrist Democrat

9:53that says, hey, are Dems rooting for the U .S.

9:59to lose in this engagement?

10:01But I think this is a point worth considering because, look, I don't even think

10:06they're particularly coy about the fact that they don't want us to succeed here.

10:13And in fact, I believe it was Tom Friedman actually just said it in a

10:17column where he was like, look, it seems bad if he gets a win here.

10:23I was like, well, it would be good for world order.

10:28Right, right. No, but that's the thing.

10:30They've become more open about it.

10:32The Democrat who wrote that New York Post piece is Julian Epstein.

10:36And, yeah, in another world, I think he would just be a regular Democrat.

10:41But in this world, he is the voice of reason over there being like, maybe

10:45we shouldn't root against our own country.

10:48Well, and I think he gets down to something that psychologically is very tough for

10:52any of us who are ideological.

10:53which is if they concede that this could work, they have to abandon their worldview

10:59that has been in practice for the last 12 to 15 years.

11:02Says for the last decade, the Democratic Party has been a party of appeasement and

11:06weakness in the face of Mideast terrorists.

11:08Barack Obama backed off his red line threat in Syria in 2012.

11:11Joe Biden fled Afghanistan in a disastrous pullout in 2021.

11:15During their president's presidencies, both seemed to believe diplomacy was the only answer to every

11:21problem, even when it was clear diplomacy was failing.

11:24So they relied on this like they're just like us.

11:28They want the same things.

11:29We're just academics having a discussion.

11:32And I've never bought that, which is why I'm willing to give Trump a lot

11:35of leeway when he goes marshal on that.

11:38Yeah, that's it. And the thing is that so much of this, as we always

11:43talk about, comes down to do you love Trump or do you hate Trump?

11:46And I am here to say you do not need to have passionate feelings about

11:50any politician in that way.

11:52You just don't. You don't need to love him or hate him.

11:55You can make decisions based on what he's doing.

11:58I have been very open that I was not, you know, I had my problems

12:01with him many times in the past.

12:03I have loved this term.

12:05I could not be more of a fan of all his actions during this term.

12:10It just doesn't matter what you think about him as a person.

12:13And that's where people get caught up.

12:15Well, and actually, just as an aside, I wrote for Fox News about Maha Moms

12:19and how you basically can keep some of them in the coalition without going full

12:23crazy. Right. But this is this is the bargain with RFK as well.

12:27Many people look at him and go.

12:29Not love. Don't love him.

12:31No, but I like a couple of things he's put on the table that we

12:35could actually get action on.

12:36Right. Where I am also.

12:37Yeah. Right. So did you see the Senate vote last week to determine whether we

12:46would provide aid for defensive arms for Israel?

12:49It's it's wild and crazy, but Democrats are blocking U .S.

12:55weapons sale to Israel and it's 40 Senate Democrats voted against that weapons sale.

13:02That party is just spiraling into anti -Israel insanity.

13:08And I hope that Republicans don't follow them down the drain, really, because it really

13:14does seem so irrational and insane when Israel is performing at such a crazy level

13:22as an ally in this war and just in general with us that it makes

13:28no sense to behave in this way.

13:30Plus, most of the aid that we give them goes to our own U .S.

13:35weapons sales. Right. So we're only hurting ourselves.

13:38Like, I just don't get it.

13:41Yeah. I mean, this party has clearly seen the writing on the wall with its

13:46base and whether it's offensive weapons or defensive weapons, it doesn't matter because the answer

13:53is we're just anti them.

13:55Right. We're we are anti the idea that this place even exists in some cases.

14:01I mean, and to me, it's been shocking to see how, again, how not coy

14:06any of them are about it, with the exception of like the Fettermans of the

14:11world. You still right. You still have him around saying, oh, I feel like we

14:14should side with our ally on this one over the jihadist terrorists surrounding them.

14:20Right. But yeah, it's it's crazy.

14:22And it also a lot of this, again, goes to emotional feelings about Trump and

14:28the way that they want to hurt Trump.

14:30So they do stuff like this that Trump would oppose.

14:32And it's I mean, I also consider it like largely an anti -America move.

14:38It's the kind of thing that you do when you don't want America's top ally

14:43to be able to defend itself.

14:45Well, and you want to sever that relationship.

14:49But why? Because you want the U .S.

14:51to be on its own island and you don't want them to have strong allies

14:55like that. There was a truth social from the president over the weekend that says

15:00whether people like Israel or not, they have proven to be a great all caps

15:03ally of the United States of America.

15:05They are courageous, bold, loyal and smart.

15:07And unlike others that have shown their true colors in a moment of conflict and

15:10stress, Israel fights hard and knows how to win.

15:13President DJT. OK, that's just unabashedly where I am on Israel.

15:19And I think partnering with them has been to both of our advantages.

15:24And I do back our Democratic allies surrounded on seven fronts by Islamic jihadists.

15:31And one more thing, I also back the Trump administration's ability to bring the Arab

15:38Gulf states together and then to have Lebanon and its government negotiating with Israel to

15:46get Hezbollah out of the country.

15:48These are these are astonishing changes that seem to me to be very good for

15:51the world order. You think this would be a bigger story, but somehow it's not.

15:56And, you know, when we were in Israel together, I think it's like two years

16:01ago now, we were privy to a lot of different briefs and information.

16:07And there was one guy who spoke to us.

16:09I wish I could tell you his name, but I wrote about it for Fox

16:12at the time. But he said, you know, do I know if Israel is the

16:16most powerful military in the Middle East?

16:19I don't. But I know that Israel And, you know, we see that Israel would

16:21be able to eliminate them in the societal attack of the government, so that's not

16:21one of those who'd single their calms and especially the most powerful military in Israel,

16:23Lebanon can't say that. They're not the most powerful military in their own country, and

16:28that's a problem. And by the way, for all the international law enthusiasts, post -2006

16:35war between Israel and Hezbollah in the south of Lebanon, Hezbollah was supposed to be

16:41north of the Latani River because of a U .N.

16:44resolution. But so strange. People don't seem to care about whether Hezbollah follows the U

16:50.N. resolution. They only seem to care that Israel wants to fight Hezbollah to get

16:55them back north where they should be or out entirely.

16:59But now the Lebanon government has decided that they might want to fight Hezbollah as

17:03well. So I'm here for it.

17:04Which they should, you know, take back your country.

17:06Israel can only do so much for you.

17:07They have to kind of, you know, do their own thing.

17:10And you need to be able to stand in your own two feet.

17:12You need to be the biggest military in your own country.

17:15In your own country. It's true.

17:17Yeah. It's true. So here we are.

22:08All right, we are back on normally with news about the Virginia redistricting.

22:14As you all know, mid -term, mid -decade redistricting has been a hot story.

22:20And Virginia is, Virginia Democrats just going for the gold.

22:23And by that, I mean disenfranchising most of the right -of -center voters in this

22:28state by taking a 5 -6, very fair congressional split in this state and using

22:33their legislative power to foist a constitutional amendment upon the people and referendum that would

22:40make it a 10 -1 map.

22:42It's an audacious move. And though Abigail Spanberger, the Democrat governor, has certainly suffered in

22:51her approval ratings over the last month or so, partly due to this, I think,

22:54where people thought she was a moderate and then she just goes for this immediately

22:58out the gate. The referendum looks close.

23:03It looks like about a four to five point lead for the yes side, which

23:08is the, not the side I want, that is the yes redistrict to 10 -1.

23:13Um, I'm going to be voting no.

23:16Early voting has not looked shabby for Republicans, but this is a midterm, off -year,

23:22essentially snap election for a constitutional referendum.

23:27And I have some problems with the process there, by the way, that I think

23:30they cut a bunch of corners and did illegal things to get this on the

23:33ballot to begin with. And the wording is also awful to the point of being

23:39possibly, like, legally problematic. However, Virginians go into the polls as you are listening.

23:45So we will have more on this.

23:47But I just want to reiterate that this is going to be one of the

23:52worst gerrymanders in the country, should it succeed.

23:55And here is Democratic Senator Tim Kaine explaining exactly why this is a great idea.

24:02Or trying to. Listen, let's talk about the last vote there in Virginia, the presidential

24:06vote. Vice President Kamala Harris won by about five percentage points.

24:10So this state is relatively split with a left lean, but 90 % of House

24:14members from Virginia being from one party?

24:1790 % of Virginians are not Democrats.

24:20That's true. But about 100 % of Virginians want election results to be respected.

24:25We're deeply worried that Donald Trump will try to interfere with the election results this

24:30November or in 2028 because we saw him do it before.

24:33And we have to have a Congress that will stand up to it.

24:36In 2021, all five Republicans in Virginia went along with Donald Trump in his effort

24:42to overturn election results. And so we're giving Virginians a chance to vote, which Republican

24:48states have not done, about whether they want to have a congressional delegation that will

24:52stand up against Donald Trump's tyranny.

24:54Is it about fairness or is it about preemptively doing crazy things because Trump might

25:00do crazy things? Right. The rationale keeps shifting.

25:05My gut says that Republicans may lose this thing by a small margin.

25:11Oh, that would be so painful.

25:13And perform better than folks thought they might.

25:16I do think that for Democrats, they have found this to be a tougher fight

25:19than they thought it would be.

25:21But a lot has been left on the table for Republicans who have not spent

25:27a ton of money on this, who have not done a ton of ad placing

25:30on this. I am mystified as to why that's the case, because I think it

25:34was a very winnable argument.

25:37But... All right. We're going to be positive.

25:38It might still be winnable.

25:40You know, we're going to hope that this turns out OK again.

25:44Today is election day, everybody.

25:46So if you live in Virginia, go vote no on this ridiculous redistricting referendum that

25:52Barack Obama calls leveling the playing field.

25:55Nine to one, leveling the playing field.

25:57There's so many Democrats who hate gerrymandering, who are on the side of this incredible

26:02gerrymandering. They do not hate gerrymandering.

26:05Including Abigail Spanberger, who was just recently against it.

26:09There are a couple decent signs in early voting numbers, in the polls that show

26:14that the affluent folks who might make up a large part of these new districts

26:19are turning most harshly against Spanberger, given her broken promise of being a moderate.

26:25So there are moments where you see energy here, and particularly I have friends and

26:31relatives in the parts of Virginia that would be disenfranchised by this.

26:35And they are hot. They're mad.

26:37Yeah, good. All right. Well, hopefully that motivates people to the polls.

26:40I'm going to stay hopeful.

26:41I don't know. I think I've mentioned this on a previous episode.

26:44I have a pollster friend who sends me dire predictions, and he's hopeful.

26:49So I don't know. I think that's something.

26:51To combine my negativity and her positivity, either one that motivates you, just get out.

26:58Yeah, get out and vote.

26:59Do the no. All right.

31:10And it's like, okay, yo, yo, yo, is this indulgent?

31:12And I really thought about it.

31:13I was like, no, at this point, it would kind of be betraying the trust

31:18the author and the listener have in telling this story if I don't go through

31:22it. But there's places in this book that deeply emotionally affected me.

31:28And I left it on the mic.

31:29That's great. Because it served the story.

31:32People will say like, oh, my God, I cried at the end.

31:34It's like, yeah, dude, me too.

31:45We are back on Normally, where Spencer Pratt is running for mayor of Los Angeles.

31:51He is a reality star.

31:53And I would say he was sort of a very mocked reality star.

31:57I never watched the show that he was on.

32:00But I knew the name him and his wife, Heidi were sort of the jokes

32:05on the show. And now he's a really serious candidate for LA mayor.

32:11Telling this story to my sister in law, who was a fan of the show,

32:15like, hey, Spencer Pratt is like the great hope of LA was a lot of

32:20fun. But he is. He saw what happened with the Palisades fire, decided he needed

32:25to take action and run for office.

32:27And that's what he's doing right now.

32:30He just got Joe Rogan's endorsement, even though Joe Rogan moved to Texas a few

32:35years ago and no longer lives in LA.

32:37But people who root for LA, including myself, I used to love that crazy place,

32:43want LA to turn. around and not be this decrepit, falling apart city that it

32:48has become. And Spencer Pratt seems like he really loves that city, really wants to

32:54make changes, really wants to make it functional.

32:56And that's all very good.

32:59Yeah, I've enjoyed watching him and I have gotten fed a bunch of his social

33:03media stuff and his interviews and his his messaging is quite good.

33:07He's a compelling speaker and he's a compelling character on the hills.

33:11He just happened to be a villain.

33:13By the way, I was a Nielsen family when Laguna Beach was on and the

33:17hills was a was a spinoff of Laguna Beach.

33:21So I would like to take partial credit for Spencer Pratt because I watched a

33:26lot of Laguna Beach back then while I was charting up numbers for Nielsen.

33:32So I'm glad to see him out there speaking common sense and it really is

33:37common sense. So I'm very glad to see him out there making these arguments.

33:41And I want to play one that is characteristic of his argument to the people

33:44of L .A. just to give you an idea of how far L .A.

33:48has fallen and the arguments he's pitching that that some in the town would be

33:52like, that's radical. This is what it is.

33:55Here he is on Joe Rogan talking about crime and how it works in L

33:58.A. It can't even be called Skid Row anymore.

34:01It's called Los Angeles. We're every community.

34:04Before my house burned down in the Palisades, my wife was ready to move because

34:07every morning in front of Palisades Elementary that then burned down and across the street

34:12at my son's preschool at Methodist, there was a lady cleaning her private parts in

34:17front of kids at 745 in the morning.

34:19You call LAPD, they pull up and they go, you don't know more because they

34:24can't enforce the law. She'd go around the corner and she'd go number two in

34:28front of Joe's barbershop. I would know because I had to step over the number

34:31two because I'd always park right near Joe's barbershop.

34:33So it's not Skid Row.

34:35It's everywhere. So the police are told not to do anything about it.

34:39Is that what it is?

34:39If you don't enforce the law, what are they going to do?

34:42Right. So this comes down from the mayor.

34:44Of course. And then the mayor and the city attorney, if the mayor is not

34:48telling the city attorney to prosecute all his misdemeanors, put these people in mandatory hold.

34:53If you're cleaning your private parts in front of kids and you're a normal citizen,

34:56you are going to jail.

34:58You're going to be on the citizens app as a sex offender.

35:01But the consequences for zombie people, they don't have them.

35:06That's crazy. It's not fair for all the normal tax paying.

35:10Yes, it is not fair for all the normal tax paying people.

35:15And he's right that the police can even come in and try to do something.

35:19But if a city attorney will do no prosecuting, which is the problem with my

35:23county prosecutor here in Fairfax County, if they do no prosecuting, it doesn't help that

35:29the police just pick up the same people over and over again because they just

35:32get released. They talked further in the Joe Rogan interview about even for violent crimes

35:36and break ins, the city attorney will not prosecute.

35:39And these people are out two weeks later on some kind of sweet deal.

35:42And it just keeps happening.

35:45But this is the price for normal people.

35:47And his argument is, I think we should enforce the law.

35:50That's his radical idea. It really is his radical idea.

35:54It's just crazy that that's where we are with so many blue cities.

35:58And they keep pretending that everything's OK.

36:01And, you know, his point about that it's no longer Skid Row.

36:04It's everywhere. That's happening everywhere.

36:07It's like it used to be contained, you know, like that kind of behavior to

36:12the really, you know, edges of the city and uncomfortable parts.

36:16Now it's everywhere. It's at people's front door and they're still pretending that everything's fine

36:21and they don't need a radical change.

36:23They do in L .A., in New York and other cities.

36:27They should pick people that would make that change.

36:29And can we also talk about how law enforcement does work and law enforcement presence

36:34and even National Guard presence changes things?

36:36Like, for instance, this is from Kyle Smith.

36:39Murder rates have fallen across the country, but the decline in Washington, D .C.

36:43is startling. In 2024, it had 274 murders.

36:46This year, it's on pace for 42 murders, with 12 so far.

36:50That's a decline of almost 85 percent.

36:55Is that good? It seems good to me.

36:59But what if you have to credit Trump for it?

37:01Is it still good? Well, that's the problem, right, is that everybody who yelled that

37:06this is a military occupation and none of this is necessary and the guards shouldn't

37:12be here. It worked. When there's an 85 percent decline in murders, I got to

37:17say, I think it was OK to have them here.

37:21Perhaps other cities should consider doing the same.

37:25It's, you know, it's just murder, but maybe we should try to reduce it.

37:29Well, and if you think about it the other way, it means that how many

37:32so there's 272 or so and now there's they're on track to have 42.

37:36So let's say we get even higher than that.

37:38That's 200 people a year you were losing because you didn't want to enforce the

37:42law. Right. I think it's worth doing the law enforcement.

37:46Yeah. Even if Donald Trump gets the credit for it, I think maybe saving all

37:51those lives would be the preferable thing anyway.
