3:12Hey, guys, we are back on Normally the Show with normal it takes for when

3:16the news gets weird. I am Mary Catherine Hamm.

3:18And I'm Carol Markowitz. Are you wrapping up your time at Hillsdale, Mary Catherine?

3:22I am. I'm going out to dinner one last time tonight and teaching my last

3:27class today. And I still have no tweed jackets with elbow patches, but I will

3:32work on it. Yeah, I think that you got to get it when you get

3:36back to the East Coast.

3:38If they're ever going to invite me back again, I really need some patches.

3:41I was visited by Molly Hemingway, came to my lecture.

3:46Oh, so nice. So that was really nice.

3:48And I had a line in my speech not knowing that she would be there

3:52that was a bit of a shout out to you and her because I said

3:56it's important to surround yourself with people who will test you on your beliefs and

4:00your outfit choices. And I happen to have a group of mouthy broads who are

4:05my friends who will not let me give me a pass on everything.

4:10And most of them have been fellows here.

4:12So yeah, mouthy broads for the win.

4:15It's important. All right, let's get into it.

4:19What is going on in the news?

4:21You know, again, we're not talking Iran in this episode because things are just keep

4:26on, keep it on. I saw news that we're ahead of schedule, which not clear

4:32what that means, but glad to know we're ahead of schedule better than being behind

4:37schedule. But we will update the normally listeners when we hear of any breaking news

4:44or potential news or stories developing there that are different from the day to day.

4:50Yeah. But meanwhile, on the home front, we have lots and lots of fraud.

4:57Carol, I know that Vice President J .D.

5:01Vance has been put in charge of sort of like an overarching fraud, fraud busting

5:06project. Frauds are. Yeah, frauds are.

5:09And it seems like it's needed.

5:11I mean, as somebody who's skeptical of what government does with our money, even I

5:16think I didn't imagine the immense ridiculousness that comes with, particularly in the Biden era,

5:25handing out of the Biden era.

5:26I don't know. millions and billions and then but simultaneously cutting the verification for these

5:33processes and so you just end up with piles of money going to utter utter

5:39nonsense a couple examples from just this week we have this is a wall street

5:45journal piece about an information superhighway to nowhere uh it was a a dc -based

5:52thing where uh they go looking for this money they say uh they took they

5:58took two hours looking from address to address because dc had asked a government agency

6:03for four million dollars to connect 55 unserved locations so a couple people get their

6:10boots on they go walking around look at these addresses and they find the unserved

6:13sites that dc wanted taxpayers to subsidize for four million dollars yep among them were

6:20a shed along some train tracks an open field a catholic university field house a

6:25pepco utility facility that's our power uh company in the area construction trailer next to

6:32visible fiber and after they did this review the this little group of lawmakers dc

6:38said ah okay maybe actually we had zero things that needed right like yeah shout

6:45out to ted cruz who gets a mention here in 2023 he found dozens of

6:50dc's supposedly unserved locations were inside the national zoo so just amazing stuff and this

6:57is arielle ross wrote this she works for the national telecommunications and information administration inside

7:03the department of commerce and they sniffed this out and did the shoe leather work

7:08that sometimes reporters have been known to do in the past right back in history

7:13not in not in this case uh but that's that's just one story we have

7:19another one from uh the wall street journal again this is about the boom in

7:23autism therapy and it's a medicaid fraud uh so listen to this and i i

7:28don't think this one might not even technically qualify as fraud because the perpetrator here

7:32is just openly saying this is what i did right here we go when megan

7:36mitchell first launched her autism therapy business in 2019 she took aim at an unlikely

7:40source of profit indiana's taxpayer funded medicaid program the public insurance system for the poor

7:46the bet paid off in 2023 the state paid mitchell's company piece by piece autism

7:52centers 29 million to provide therapy to just 84 parent patients about 340 000 a

7:59child according to a wall street journal analysis that amount surpassed what indiana medicaid typically

8:04spends in a year treating a newly diagnosed one cancer patient or covering a year

8:09of nursing home care yeah piece by piece became one of medicaid's most expensive providers

8:13and she bought herself like three homes right like as she's buying these i you

8:18know they point out a 2 .5 million dollar home in florida sanibel island and

8:22600 000 waterfront house on the tippecanoe river in indiana like how is i mean

8:29she must be aware she's committing fraud well she's being open about it right well

8:34she's like i didn't break any of the rules and truly that might be the

8:38case because what happened is that in a lot of these programs democrats insisted there

8:42be no rules right she's just like the smartest person alive and it should be

8:49embarrassing because this money is taken from families who probably have trouble getting their children

8:55treated for the various things that they need their children treated for while this woman's

9:00making off with 340k per kid right right uh one of the comments on the

9:07tweets about it uh comes from kk bird and she writes 30 to 40 hours

9:12a week of aba therapy no way my kid was lucky if he sat for

9:16it was approved for an hour or two a week it's either a fake therapy

9:19or babysitting scam absolute fraud yeah it sounds broad delicious definitely well and like the

9:29problem is you you hit a point with this stuff i was talking to a

9:32friend earlier today about you know the future of careers and ai and economic issues

9:37and stuff and she's like you want to touch back in a couple hours and

9:40like brainstorm some ways to do the fraud because it seems like a lot of

9:46people are doing the fraud yeah um and eventually people do think well this whole

9:52process is so fraudulent why am i not getting my slice of this pie absolutely

9:57yeah i can imagine the average taxpayer just being like i'm a sucker for working

10:03a normal job and paying my taxes and not committing fraud um i i think

10:09after the somali daycare fraud i heard a lot of that on the internet where

10:14people were just like am i the last person working it feels that way sometimes

10:19or it feels like by the way if you wanted to start your own practice

10:23or medicaid uh medicaid funded thing or your own practice or something that worked outside

10:28of government by the way without any subsidies the state would give you such a

10:32hard time right like you can't just up and start a daycare but it turns

10:36out it's real easy as long as you don't follow any of the laws um

10:39cbs is also doing some work out in california where they found a hospice fraud

10:46in la uh this is the reporter they're saying at age 69 len iani is

10:52a pickleball whiz zip From dinks to drives energetically, when she suffered an injury on

10:56the court two years ago, she sought physical therapy and was surprised to learn her

11:00Medicare insurance wouldn't cover it.

11:02She was, according to Medicare records, dying and in hospice.

11:06Someone had taken her identity and was making money regularly off of this woman who's

11:13out living a life. So we're paying double for this person.

11:17And by the way, all the illegal immigration makes identity theft and all of these

11:22things so much worse because the left doesn't want to deal with any of that

11:26crime either. That's right. And this comes out of CBS News.

11:31And it's interesting because would the old CBS pre -Barry Weiss had done anything like

11:37this? Obviously, this fraud is being committed in California.

11:40I think they would be protecting Gavin Newsom and not reporting on this.

11:45So I like that bad change has come.

11:48Me too. And in general, reporters think that government money is government money.

11:53A lot of left -leaning reporters do not recognize it as your money.

11:57Right. So they're just like, who really cares?

11:59Who needs to check on this?

12:00I would note that they found 89 hospice companies were registered to a single building

12:05in Van Nuys. You can't have hospice services for 89 people in Van Nuys.

12:11And by the way, this is designed, when they do it for autism and hospice,

12:17those are vulnerable populations on purpose so that the people running off with this money

12:21and the people facilitating them running off with this money can go, how dare you

12:25come after the dying and the disabled children?

12:28That's right. And that's what's happening because that's not who these people are.

12:32Yeah, absolutely. On the story, on the tweet from this story, John Bachman from Newsmax,

12:39our friend John, writes to the California governor and governor press office accounts saying, any

12:44comment, you're so worried about our troops getting lobster and steak, you embarrass yourself daily.

12:49Because there is a story right now about the amount of money that our military

12:53spends on things like lobster or steak for our military troops.

12:58And it's like special occasion dinners for deployed troops.

13:02Right. I'm perfectly OK with that.

13:04And I don't see any evidence of fraud there.

13:07I think that the idea that we can't splurge on meals for our active duty

13:13member, military members is insanity.

13:17Yeah. And by the way, it's worth pointing out that unlike in the Biden administration,

13:20Kristi Noem, at least one person, has been demoted slash disciplined in some way for

13:26having misspent money. This happened in his first term, too.

13:30I believe Zinke was out for doing similar and another maybe a DHS guy at

13:37one point. I have always appreciated that Trump can fire people.

13:40Biden's mistake was never firing anyone for doing anything.

13:43And yet often the misspending of money by actual officials is pales in comparison to

13:51these massive fraud operations. Right.

13:54Yeah. You know, you said you were surprised.

13:58I feel like Russian from Brooklyn, I'm not that surprised.

14:02In fact, I'm always like, please know Russian names in these stories.

14:07And by that, I don't mean Russian from Russia.

14:10I mean ex -Sovietes who live in America.

14:12But yeah, I think that these fraud scams have been so prevalent for so long

14:19that really the story here is that they're being uncovered and stopped now.

14:23And I'd love to see that continue.

14:25I really I had hope in Doge and that kind of thing.

14:29And of course, government spending went up even despite Doge.

14:32So now my hope is fraud busting, really.

14:37That's the only thing we have left.

14:39The the Medicaid story comes from a data release from Doge.

14:43So that is just an issue of having enough enterprising numbers people to go through

14:49the Medicaid info. So I think we'll be seeing more from that.

14:53And it did originate from Doge.

14:55So getting to the bottom of this stuff is sometimes a slow process.

14:58And it turns out and maybe we should all be inspired to put on our

15:01boots and walk around and be like, what is this address again that is getting

15:06all my money? Oh, man.

15:07Yeah. You know, I would say just tell my Twitter followers like what to do

15:12and they'll go do it because they are investigative reporters.

15:16Those people I have a story, I may have told it on here before.

15:19But one time I was in Texas and I didn't tell my followers that I

15:23was in Texas and I posted a tray of barbecue.

15:25Didn't say anything except I kind of jokingly said like Brooklyn barbecue.

15:29Yeah. Like somebody nailed not just the barbecue place, but like the dish that I

15:34ordered. It was it was wild.

15:37Yeah. I was like, OK, I can't I can't do this anymore.

15:40Yeah. Be careful. Amazing. Well, I'm glad you got some non Brooklyn barbecue.

15:46Hey, Brooklyn barbecue is not bad.

15:48Except for that one notorious picture, which was right.

15:53I didn't see that. That's an old that's an old meme.

15:55Basically inside Twitter joke. But Brooklyn barbecue, if you happen to be in Brooklyn and

15:59wanting some barbecue, hometown and Red Hook is legit.

16:02Nice. By the way, can I just point out that I thought somebody had this

16:05genius idea and I can't even tell you who it is right now, but I'm

16:07going to say the genius idea.

16:08There's a there's a two dudes who are running around New York City alphabetically trying

16:13to have food from every single nation on Earth.

16:16That's cool. And it's so fun.

16:19They just go to these tiny little places.

16:20So I. I believe in New York.

16:22I believe that New York can produce Southern food.

20:16We are back on Normally, where CNN has been just painting itself in glory since

20:23the attempted terrorist attack in New York City on Saturday.

20:27We talked about various media outlets miscovering, you know, I can't even call it miscovering,

20:35right? Because they weren't doing it accidentally.

20:36This is on purpose covering the attack by two young Muslim men on anti -Islam

20:44protesters. This attack has now been portrayed as somehow on Zoran Mamdani, the mayor of

20:51New York City and his wife, and not on the people who it actually was

20:56targeted to and not from these two young Muslim men who have affinity for ISIS.

21:03So yesterday, on Tuesday, CNN tweeted a story where this is how the tweet went.

21:10Two Pennsylvania teenagers crossed into New York City Saturday morning for what could have been

21:15a normal day, enjoying the city during abnormally warm weather.

21:19But in less than an hour, their lives would drastically change as the pair would

21:22be arrested for throwing homemade bombs during an anti -Muslim protest outside of Mayor Zoran

21:28Mamdani's home. Here's what we know so far.

21:31I mean, it obfuscates what happened in such a deep way that I go back

21:37to the point I made on our show on Tuesday, which is, this is the

21:41kind of thing that leads people to conspiracy theories.

21:44They see blatant lies and they start not to believe.

21:49anything. And I understand that this path, this is where it comes from.

21:54And CNN really needs to be held accountable.

21:56However, of course, they won't be and they haven't been.

21:59And lead us into the Abby Phillips story that relates to this, Mary Catherine.

22:04Yeah, so like Guy Benson and I call this anti -journalism.

22:07Like your object here is to tell your audience the opposite of what happened because

22:12you don't like the thing that happened.

22:14And Abby Phillips was engaged in that on her show in, is it primetime last

22:20night? Here's Abby Phillips. Two Republicans say Muslims don't belong here after an attempted terror

22:28attack against New York's mayor, Zoran Mamdani.

22:31And the House Speaker, Mike Johnson, says nothing really to condemn those comments.

22:37Okay, so. Yeah, ma 'am.

22:40Number one, the focus is already Islamophobia.

22:42Right. From Mamdani and from Abby Phillips on the news.

22:46So we've already turned, the story is over of the actual homegrown terrorism.

22:51We're not going to address that.

22:52We're going to address how people react to the terrorism.

22:56And the people that we don't like, we're going to punish them for reacting in

22:59bad ways. But we're, the bomb throwing, sort of a side issue for her.

23:03And then Mamdani's house is not the target.

23:07American protesters saying that they don't like Islam were the target.

23:13Now that speech is protected and they weren't doing anything violent.

23:18You may think they're being jerks, but they weren't doing anything violent.

23:21Yep. And this, this makes people watching that show think the opposite of what happened,

23:27happened. The proximity to Gracie Manchin is because the anti -Islam protest was happening outside

23:34Gracie Manchin. Right. It's done on purpose to cover what happened.

23:40Abby Phillip took to Twitter today to apologize for what she said.

23:46She says she read it off a teleprompter.

23:48But you know, I mean, you tweeted that the fact that she didn't notice it

23:52until the next day and issues a correction online and not on air.

23:56That's the whole ballgame to me.

23:58Like, is she going to get on the air tonight and say, I'm sorry, I,

24:03you know, made a mistake.

24:04But how does that kind of mistake get made?

24:06How does that get into the teleprompter?

24:08How do you just read that and not think it over and not say this

24:12is not what happened? How do you not come back and say that was a

24:15mistake right away? Yes. It's all kind of a big tell.

24:18So yeah, I think that she is reading prompter.

24:21This is a tease. It is not necessarily the anchor's job to fact check every

24:26tease, but I would suggest if the words are going to come out of your

24:29mouth, you need to not Ron Burgundy it and you need to be aware of

24:32what's happening. The problem is that at every step of the way, each person involved

24:37in this process, writing the prompter, checking it, sending it to her, her reading it,

24:41all of them have systematically misinformed themselves about what happened on this day.

24:48And the fact that nobody in her circle during commercial break was like, dude, do

24:53you know what you just said?

24:55Right. No one did that.

24:56You know who did do that is Joe Borelli.

24:59Yeah. The conservative sitting on set who has to correct her.

25:02And I used to play this role at CNN a lot because everyone at the

25:06table agrees with each other and doesn't know certain things.

25:09And so then you have to be like, actually, Ana Navarro, who is inverting this

25:14incident, what happened is these guys were not attacking Momdani.

25:19They were attacking these protesters.

25:22Yeah. Ana Navarro, by the way, seems super out of it on this clip.

25:28I feel like you're too nice to say anything like this, but I'm just going

25:30to say it. She seems a little drunk.

25:32She's like slurring and yelling at Joe Borelli.

25:36And she's like, I believe Mayor Momdani was raised Muslim.

25:40Like, it's just all unrelated.

25:43And she's saying that finally Republicans are talking about anti -Islamic rhetoric because of this

25:51attack. Like, again, ma 'am, the rhetoric is not the problem here.

25:57It's the bombs being thrown are the problem here.

26:01I really think the bombs are the problem.

26:04We should also do a quick flashback of Abby Phillip talking to Joy Reid about

26:09what she believes her role as a newscaster is.

26:13Conservatives are living in a completely different information world than liberals.

26:18And breaking that down needs to be done.

26:22Because when you don't ever even hear the facts, it's hard to even know that

26:28you're wrong. And that happens a lot.

26:30I think that one time that that person brings up something that is debunked and

26:34false and I debunk it at the table might be the very first time that

26:39someone out there has heard an alternative point of view.

26:43Yeah. It looks like she gets all things opposite.

26:45Because what happened at that table is that Joe Borelli was the one person debunking

26:50the thing and the rest of them hadn't heard it.

26:53Right. Or were just willfully lying.

26:55Yeah. Yeah. And again, whatever you think of conservative media, we know what the liberals

27:02are saying. We know what they believe.

27:04How could you not? Yeah.

27:05Right. We are fully aware of what the other side believes.

27:09We are fully aware of all of their positions.

27:11We take extra care to get the actual facts right.

27:14Because if we get the fact wrong, we're completely...

27:16dismissed. It's just, I mean, again, liberal privilege like this just doesn't exist on our

27:22side. Well, just even though there are people who are bad actors on both sides,

27:27our ability or our incidental running into liberal thought is just off the charts.

27:36Like it happens all the time.

27:37It's the world that you live in.

27:39If you're consuming news, you have to go out of your way to get alternative

27:43viewpoints, not Abby Phillips viewpoint.

27:45That one is everywhere. So we just hear it all the time.

27:50They do not. But she seems to think with this blind spot that she has

32:24The New York Times did a feature, iPads in kindergarten, YouTube on breaks, the school

32:31screen time battle. And what you find out in the article that is that some

32:36places the battle has been lost.

32:40And why are we surprised by this, by the way?

32:42Yeah. Uh, the entire education.

32:44public education system told you in 2020 to 2023 that it was not just something

32:52that worth doing for survival but good for your kids to be online listening to

32:57their teacher in a zoom for six to eight hours a day that's what they

33:00do it was a lie and now we have this this is an anecdote from

33:05the story uh a few months before her daughter started kindergarten claire benoist saw a

33:10facebook post that stunned her another family with an incoming kindergartner was wondering if it

33:15was true that children in the croton harman school district 40 miles north of new

33:19york city receive ipads when they start school other parents confirmed that during school kindergartners

33:24often use ipads to play games and watch television shows and youtube videos school administrators

33:29assured her that ipad time would be limited to 15 minutes a day but once

33:33school started her daughter suddenly knew jingles from the diaper and car commercials that would

33:37play before youtube videos she saw in the classroom other parents talk about limiting their

33:42screen time at home and working really hard to do it and then finding out

33:46their kids are on for hours a day at school yeah yeah it's tough i

33:51remember during the pandemic where my kids suddenly knew commercials they'd be like in this

33:55company we believe you know and they'd be like we're a car company but we

34:01have values you know yeah you're like where did you get that right yeah that

34:07you know every time i'm asked to talk about uh cell phone bans in schools

34:12i say it's a good start because that's what it is and the thing is

34:16that i you know in a perfect world we would have mechanisms by which we

34:21would limit screen time use and not just take it away like my 16 year

34:25old daughter uh school her school had banned has banned um cell phones she says

34:31that one of the things her and her friends used to do is like snap

34:33a picture of each other when they would see each other across campus and now

34:37they can't do that anymore little cute things have been lost um and you know

34:41her and her friends are not super screen time teenagers so they just feel like

34:46they've been punished because other people are playing video games all through school i get

34:51that um and it does suck but we in in lieu of having policies that

34:57are you know sane and and limit you you kind of have to take it

35:02away completely and what we have now is they've taken away the phones but people

35:06in classes the kids are on laptops or or tablets and they're playing games they're

35:13watching videos they're uh having chats they're fully having you know conversations with their friends

35:20on various chat programs what have we really accomplished by taking away the phones like

35:26now the kids don't have access to it between classes but if they have screens

35:30in classes it really doesn't do that much to limit their actual screen time i

35:35don't know how we walk this back i think you're right that the battle has

35:39been lost and some in some places for sure and yeah but because part of

35:44it is that well parents got sold a lie and then a lot of them

35:47during the pandemic kind of had to lean on devices because they had to work

35:50at home and right i get it but you got to pull out of the

35:53dive as a parent like i they're they are sabotaging you at school you need

35:59to take that to your school board you need to make noise about this and

36:02with your kids you need to say no to them at home you need to

36:04say say no to them a lot of a lot of parents are like well

36:08it would be really hard to say no yeah that's but you have to parenting

36:12it's really hard yeah jonathan hate said even beyond the phone problem as you note

36:18that um there was some charts showing that the drop off and uh ability to

36:23read and have attention span for a long text starts dropping as soon as ed

36:27tech is introduced into the classroom and i can understand for a short time being

36:32like this is the new tool we must use the new tool sure but if

36:36the new tool is making things worse you need to abandon the new tool and

36:40you need to go back to basics and i would just point out also my

36:43friend karen vates who covers literacy notes that in places like mississippi louisiana tennessee guess

36:49what they use in classes not in paper yep they use paper they use full

36:55books they are tech free zones for teaching uh reading for the most part and

37:00it turns out that that's what makes your brain work yeah going back to basics

37:05is what it's all about and you know there's also this thing on twitter where

37:08people are always like oh look what was taken from us and um i got

37:12into a conversation with matt walsh the other day where he was saying like he

37:16posted a picture of some kid riding his bike at like dusk and he's like

37:20you know this no longer exists and i was like that could actually be my

37:23kid like with the bad haircut and all this is this could be my child

37:26on his bike at dusk i'm like it does exist it's outside my house and

37:31he commented back to me that well okay even if you're you limit screen time

37:34in your house the other kids don't i'll just say if you get your kids

37:39outside and playing other kids will join that's how it works that's how it's always

37:44worked you go outside and you start playing and other kids see you and they

37:47start playing and yeah maybe they're more screen time kids than they used to be

37:52my kid you know my younger son referred to one of his uh friends as

37:56an indoor kid oh that kid that kid's an indoor kid but they've always been

38:00indoor kids they've always been indoor kids who didn't want to be outside with the

38:04rest of the gang i think that you can make the changes in your own

38:08house and you can watch it flourish in your neighborhood it's flourish in your neighborhood
