9:06you so your article on homelessness caught my attention because obviously it's a huge issue

9:12it doesn't always get discussed as much but even if you look at places like

9:16new york i mean homelessness increased by i think almost like 53 percent in a

9:21one -year span from 2023 to 2024 new york city was obviously the main driver

9:26of that um but we're seeing spikes in you know different parts of the country

9:30mostly liberal cities why is this happening it's a policy choice it's a it's happening

9:37because our leaders no longer care to enforce bourgeois values of public cleanliness order they

9:45view their roles as advocating on behalf of the anti -social and the dysfunctional there's

9:52no reason why there should be vagrant encampments in any city that is it's a

9:56decision to allow people there these are people that suffer from mental illness and drug

10:02addiction the greatest branding madison avenue i don't think has ever had as successful a

10:08branding campaign as the advocates that created the concept of homelessness which is a complete

10:15uh psyop or whatever you want to call it the problem is not that people

10:19lack homes the problem is that they are mentally ill drug addicts and they are

10:25they have uh the social ties that would keep people that are more stable housed

10:30if they have a setback in their lives but the the people on the streets

10:35are so crazy so unreliable that they get kicked out of their mother's house they

10:41get kicked out of their sister -in -law's house and then they get to the

10:45streets and there's an entire industry that enables the you vagrant lifestyle.

10:51People get pizzas delivered to their boxes, their encampments, their cardboard boxes.

10:56Drugs are ubiquitous. I mean, every time, if ever an encampment gets cleared, the main

11:02takeaway from that is just a whole lot of drug paraphernalia.

11:06It's ruled by advocates. It's ruled by NGOs that get money from social problems.

11:14And the taxpayers that are funding this vagrancy machine are viewed simply as ATMs and

11:23their interests are never, ever taken into account.

11:26How much of it, you know, obviously there's the big financial component that you laid

11:30out of, you know, sort of like these kickbacks as well and sort of enriching

11:34friends and the moneymaking aspect of it.

11:37But there's also like this ideological aspect of it.

11:41And it seems like with the left and it's the same thing, you know, we

11:44are broke like the war on cops.

11:46And, you know, there seems to be this consistent theme on the left where it's

11:49like the people who do bad and the criminals or these vagrants, as you put

11:56them, with the homeless, that their needs are supersede the needs of like law -abiding,

12:02tax -paying citizens. Why do you think that is?

12:05Like, how did the left come about this ideology?

12:08Like, what drives it? Well, that's a very difficult causal question, but I'm going to

12:14add one other aspect to that, which is that the advocates want the homeless in

12:20the streets, not only because they make money, the Coalition for the Homeless, every city

12:23has its own, you know, vagrant advocacy group.

12:27And as you say, then the shelter building services industry, but it's also an ideological

12:33statement because the advocates view people living on the streets as visible symbols of the

12:39heartlessness of capitalism and why we need to move to socialized housing, why we need

12:45to have even greater expropriation of wealth through a highly progressive tax system, more progressive

12:51than anything Europe ever has.

12:53So it's for them, they are making a statement.

12:56But your broader point is one that I think about all the time, Lisa, which

13:00is why has government changed its function, changed its self -conception away from serving as

13:10the guarantor, as the backstop of commerce, of a civil society, protecting law and order,

13:17protecting, making sure that streets work, that transit systems are maintained, that highways are maintained,

13:25making sure that there is the infrastructure that allows people that want to strive and

13:30get ahead to succeed in life.

13:33And instead, now, as you say, they have embraced the cause of the fictionally marginalized.

13:41This is the most prosperous society.

13:44It is the most tolerant society in human history.

13:47The idea that there are groups that are not like heterosexual white males, they truly

13:52are marginalized. I mean, there's overt discrimination going on, getting into medical schools, law schools.

13:58If you have a straight white male son or grandson, you've experienced this, but the

14:03people that claim, that lay claim to victim status are simply not.

14:08But that's what government has decided in sort of a post -civil rights era, that

14:13it's no longer about the basic public responsibilities that the private market can't take care

14:21of. And instead, it's taken the side of social justice and views the ordinary bourgeois

14:31citizen who's just trying to raise his family as somehow an impediment to social justice

14:38and as to be very extreme in the statement.

14:41But to a certain extent, and I'm here in New York City, I can say

14:45when it plums to our mayor, this is the case, views the hardworking taxpayer, the

14:51property owner, the corporation owner as the enemy.

14:54And two, just the, you know, it's the same with the illegal aliens as well,

14:59that their needs are more important than ours.

15:02You know, the American taxpayers and the American law -abiding citizens.

15:07You know, we obviously saw millions of illegal aliens come to the United States.

15:12A lot of these cities that are experiencing homeless crisis, they're sanctuary cities, like in

15:17New York City. So what role has this influx of legal aliens played in the

15:23homeless crisis? Well, it's contributing to it at this point, but we had this crisis

15:29for a long time before the big welcome mat and additional set of incentives for

15:35illegal aliens to come to.

15:37But again, that's a great example, Lisa.

15:39And there's trying to decide what a cause is for a very complex social phenomenon

15:44is very difficult. You can't test it empirically or, you know, do a hypothesis testing.

15:50I would just say to notice the phenomenon is already a lot.

15:56And as you articulate, it is already a lot to notice that government, I call

16:02it the great inversion. It has overturned the traditional values that has always governed and

16:10motivated governments. Again, the protection of life, liberty, and property.

16:14Property, we sort of are, we shy away from.

16:18well, property is important because it just sounds kind of selfish and mean -spirited and

16:23capitalist. No, the protection of property is the cornerstone of civilization.

16:29When you have, as you do in New York, every drugstore has locked up the

16:35most innocuous consumer items, the toothpaste, the Advil, hair conditioner, lotion.

16:46If you have a government that can't even protect that drugstore owner from rampant theft

16:55and shoplifting, that is a government that has no reason to exist.

17:01It has completely abdicated its most fundamental obligation, which is to make sure that somebody

17:09who wants to engage in commerce has the security of his property.

17:14And we're not, we're supposed to not be the third world or the middle ages

17:20when you had highway robbers rampaging without any central authority of the state to bring

17:26them down. But we have regressed to that.

17:28So again, the illegal aliens, they're out there, but so many of them are dealing

17:34the drugs as opposed to taking them.

17:38And the mental illness problem that's very, very much central to all of this.

17:43That's partly response of decades of drug abuse.

17:48It's partly a group. There's certain groups that are much more susceptible to schizophrenia by

17:54genetic disposition than others. But the vagrancy thing began in the 80s.

18:01We remember the bag ladies and the shopping carts and whatnot.

18:05This was something new in American society that predates illegal aliens, which is not to

18:12say, I am not in any way saying that government is not completely ignoring its

18:18responsibilities in protecting the border.

18:21And nobody has any entitlement not to be deported.

18:25Deportation is the risk that is assumed by every illegal alien who comes in.

18:31And sorry, you don't get to complain that there's, you know, statute of limitations or

18:36something on your being deported.

21:59So why haven't voters caught on?

22:02Because in a lot of these cases, you know, Mayor Mom Donnie will purport to

22:07be virtuous and that, you know, he's the caring person and that, you know, like

22:12the bleeding heart liberal type scenario.

22:14But then, you know, he just got a bunch of homeless people killed during a

22:18snowstorm or, you know, they say legal, you know, allowing, you know, feckless, illegal immigration,

22:25that somehow that is virtuous.

22:27But then, you know, you look at the rapes that take place and take part

22:31in the journey. And, you know, it's like it's not the virtuous thing to do.

22:36These leftist policies feel like why haven't voters caught on to that?

22:41Yeah. And these are such deep questions.

22:43One can go back and back.

22:45What causes that? Well, OK, we say that.

22:47Now, what causes that? You know, it's an infinite regress of explanation.

22:50I would say that some voters, again, this grows out of a very interconnected left

22:55wing view that regards middle class, traditional bourgeois values with suspicion that, you know, this

23:01began in the 60s with the youth rebellion against traditional values that was enabled by

23:08America's unbelievable prosperity that gave stupid, that gave stupid, selfish, narcissistic adolescence, spending power and

23:17autonomy for the first time in millennia of human history.

23:21And their pseudo rebellion instinct was glorified.

23:26And it's gone on since then with anything remotely resembling traditional adult authority being discredited.

23:34So but as you say, you could if you're if your main goal is is

23:38compassion, you can play that on the other side.

23:41It's absolutely true. I mean, this is my big complaint about Black Lives Matter activists.

23:45They only protest if a black person is killed by a police officer, which is

23:51the minute number of killings.

23:53Blacks die about eight, 10 ,000 a year are killed in homicide.

23:57That's more than all white and Hispanic homicide victims combined, even though blacks are only

24:0413 percent of the population.

24:06Blacks are mowing each other down dozens by the day.

24:10Every single day across America, dozens of blacks are getting killed by other blacks.

24:15And there's never a peep of protest from the Black Lives Matter activists, including when

24:22it's three year olds, one year olds, toddlers getting shot in the head, shot through

24:26the chest in their bedrooms, playing on trampolines at barbecues, at Fourth of July barbecues,

24:33as we saw this last summer in Washington, D .C., with Honesty Cheadle.

24:39It's unbelievable. So their compassion is extremely politically oriented.

24:46And the other reason, because I ask myself this all the time, Lisa, why do

24:52voters keep voting in the Democratic mayors and governors that are directly responsible for the

25:01appalling conditions on the streets?

25:03I'm from Los Angeles. It's heartbreaking what has happened to that city.

25:07It did not used to be this way.

25:09Santa Monica now is just a complete nightmare.

25:13And part of it is that the left believes that so -called homelessness is a

25:21phenomenon caused by economic conditions, by racism, by poverty.

25:26It is not a policy choice.

25:29And so they think that, well, the politicians are doing as much as they can.

25:35And if it hasn't gotten solved, it's not because of bad policy.

25:40It's because our economy is cruel.

25:42So they don't blame the politicians.

25:45And so then there's never any accountability.

25:48But it is a mystery.

25:49It is a mystery why the bums don't get thrown out.

25:54Well, that's the thing, because it's like even on like the affordability stuff, which is

25:58what, you know, Zoran, that was the key to his success.

26:03But it's like you would think common sense would be like, all right, well, we've

26:06had Democrats in charge for quite some time.

26:09Like affordability has not gotten better.

26:11So maybe like going with another Democrat, particularly one even more left -leaning, is not

26:16going to solve that crisis or that, you know, that problem.

26:20But, you know, somehow voters have not figured that out.

26:24Well, they're getting such left -wing ideology.

26:27You know, it's quite ironic because Mondami presents government as the solution to affordability.

26:34It's the problem. Government is the problem.

26:36You know, he keeps complaining about the conditions in rent -stabilized apartments because the landlords

26:42don't have enough money. They're not being allowed enough rent to cover costs.

26:48And yet he wants to make it even harder for landlords to get by.

26:54Rent control, it has never worked.

26:56It is guaranteed. Anytime you have price controls, they don't work.

27:01Government regulations, it makes everything more expensive.

27:04And yet people buy the lie that it is the problem with capitalism and government

27:12is the solution. And certainly nobody in college is being taught anything different.

27:19Well, you know, and then, too, obviously, like these huge budget issues in places like

27:25New York State. Do you know how much they're spending to, you know, quote unquote,

27:28solve the homeless crisis here in the city?

27:32A thousand per vagrant. The budget, it's in the billions of dollars and it goes

27:38up every year. But 80 ,000 at least that now I'm not saying we should

27:43build everybody a private home because that's not the problem.

27:46The problem is that they are they should all be either institutionalized for mental illness

27:51or forced to deal with their drug addiction.

27:54Giving them their own private apartment is not the solution and it's nothing that taxpayers

27:58should be on the hook for.

28:00Nevertheless, it is, you know, it's hackneyed to say, but 80 ,000 is a lot.

28:06You could do a lot with that if you wanted, but it's going to the

28:09advocates that keep the system going.

28:11Yeah, I wanted to ask you about the murder rates and the country is on

28:17track to potentially see one of the largest drops we've ever seen.

28:20I think the numbers are out in September, I believe, right?

28:23For the FBI, yeah. What do you think?

28:26Is that Trump driven? Like what's what's driving that?

28:29Well, I think we had the biggest one year increase in homicide in 2020 with

28:35the George Floyd race riots and the demonization of the cops.

28:40It was a 28, 29 percent increase in one year.

28:44That's that's unprecedented. And to a certain extent, we're reverting to the mean.

28:51I think it does matter that we no longer have the constant reinforcement coming from

28:58a White House that blacks are victims of police racism.

29:03And therefore, you know, there's a certain subtle justification of crime.

29:08Trump is willing to stand up for the police.

29:11And there has been a gradual return to the essential proactive policing and actually enforcing

29:20the law. That is the one thing that government can do to lower crime.

29:25The social programs do not work.

29:27It's too late. The family structure has been too destroyed.

29:30Enforcement and deterrence from enforcement does help.

29:35And so that's been going on.

29:37And Trump, you know, I don't think crime policy is a very local issue.

29:42He has not been able to change the tactics in the 700 ,000 or so

29:49police jurisdictions in this country.

29:52But but he has sent a message that I think is is salutary.

29:56The usual he also argues for the decrease of illegal aliens.

30:01I'm agnostic on that. This is obviously, as you know, Lisa, one of the most

30:07contested issues of what is the crime rate of illegal aliens.

30:11And it's hard to get satisfying data because the jurisdictions that are sanctuary jurisdictions, the

30:19county jails, the state prisons, they don't exactly care to look into the immigration status

30:26of of their inmates because they're not even going to allow the ICE to take

30:30custody once they finish their terms.

30:32I would say my view, and this is something I've just sort of come to

30:36feel from researching over the years and reporting going to place, is that the effect

30:42of an illegal alien population that is a combination of white and Asian crime rates,

30:50which is very low, and black crime rates, which are very high.

30:53So if you have Hispanics coming into a white community, that community is going to

31:00start experiencing bigger gangs. But when Hispanics started moving into South Central Los Angeles and

31:08displacing blacks, the crime rate dropped and you got more bodegas being formed, more entrepreneurial

31:15spirits. So as I say, it kind of depends on what the context is.

31:19How reliable is crime data, period, in the sense of, you know, what is crime

31:27actually being reported? You know, you've got a lot of these liberal cities, too, where

31:32there is no follow -through as well, or, you know, people aren't being arrested that

31:36should be arrested. So, like, how reliable is the data, period?

31:41Well, homicide data is gold standard.

31:44It's really not possible to hide the bodies, and basically every homicide is going to

31:50get reported one way or another.

31:52The ones that are not are very few.

31:54So that, those tend to, I think, show real trends.

31:58Now, the other felonies, you know, we do have that sometimes you have pressure on

32:02police to reclassify. If you can possibly reclassify a felony as a misdemeanor, do it.

32:09I don't know how widespread that is.

32:11You have also two different tests.

32:15You have crime data that the FBI has traditionally published.

32:19It used to be called the Uniform Crime Reports.

32:21Now it's a different acronym that is National Reporting Bureau of Economics.

32:27I'm not sure. It's NBBRs or something.

32:29It's a different, it's a more complicated reporting system, but it's basically police data.

32:35So they report their arrests.

32:38And then there's a completely different source, which is service.

32:41of the American public, and those are national crime victim surveys.

32:47And so what is usually the case is that if you ask victims if they've

32:54been victimized in the previous year, those crime numbers are much, much higher than the

33:00FBI reports through police data, arrest data, because a lot of people don't bother going

33:08forward to report their crime because they believe that the police are at this point

33:11indifferent to theft or burglary.

33:14So sometimes you have the FBI data going down and the National Crime Victim Survey's

33:19data going up. So you sort of have to hope that it's consistently wrong in

33:25one direction or the other, as opposed to bouncing around from year to year.

33:29I tend to think I'm content to use the data.

33:33I'm not going to spend a whole lot of time trying to discredit it because

33:37I think it is consistent, whether it's consistently wrong by 5 -10 % each year,

33:44doesn't really matter as much as being able to assess those trends.

33:49I guess that makes a lot of sense about the homicides.

33:52You're either dead or alive.

33:53You can't hide the bodies, really.

33:55Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's, you know, one or the other.

33:57Is there anything else you'd like to leave us with before we go, Heather?

34:00You're a very strong voice for sane government, bourgeois values, and people should not accept

34:08that they have to live with disorder in their lives.

34:13They should demand much more from their government and not accept that their children have

34:19to grow up in, if they're in a city or, you know, using a city,

34:24that they have to live with this type of human degradation.

34:28It's just, it's not normal.

34:30And we should all have much higher expectations and higher demands for our governments.

34:34It's crazy. And then you're also, your book, When Race, Trump's Merit, is also out.

34:40You're also the New York Times bestselling author of The War on Cops, which is

34:43a great book. Heather McDonald, appreciate your work.
