0:39I didn't know we'd never spoken about it.

0:42Well, that's why I came to America to start.

0:44I got offered a job hosting a Catholic podcast.

0:47And they fired me. I packed up everything in Adelaide.

0:51This was like two and a bit years ago.

0:52I had the kids and the wife.

0:54And on the way to America, I got fired.

0:56And they said, we'll still pay you rent.

0:57And it's in Steubenville, Ohio, beautiful Appalachian town, just outside of Pittsburgh.

1:03And yeah, it's where we were.

1:05Three months I was there.

1:07So what did they see that they fired you for?

1:10Oh, a lot. They made a compilation video.

1:12No, the guy who showed up, they were right to find me.

1:15They were right to find me.

1:16No, no, they weren't. No, because it was a good, clean Catholic podcast.

1:19And then the business manager was like, there was a sketch about stabbing someone in

1:23the throat with an AIDS needle.

1:25They're like, he uses the word cunt all the time.

1:27They're like, this is a sponsorship nightmare.

1:29Get him out. So I said, okay.

1:31But they still said, we'll pay you rent for three months and you can figure

1:36something out. You still got a visa.

1:38And I was terrified. I was just in the snow.

1:40With kids and a wife.

1:41Three kids, no job. I didn't have the money to go back home.

1:43Oh my God. We couldn't afford to go back home.

1:46Oh my God. And I had, I didn't know that I had been passed at

1:48the mothership because I didn't know how the system worked.

1:51So on the way in to go to Steubenville, where I was like, I'll figure

1:55something out. I stopped in at Austin to see Shane.

1:58Shane said, go and do the mothership open mic.

2:01I did it. Adam Egan said, if you're ever in town, come back.

2:03We'll pay for spots. I didn't know that meant I was passed.

2:06I didn't know I could work here.

2:07Oh. I just thought he was like, I could audition again.

2:11And then, so I had three confronting months in the snow.

2:15Beautiful part of the world.

2:16It was the most terrified I've ever been in my life.

2:19He says that as an Australian, that's from Ohio.

2:21No, I loved it. I wouldn't say that's the most beautiful part of the world.

2:23I loved it. I went back and watched that Wild Whites of West Virginia.

2:26Yeah, that's where you're, that's where it's.

2:27It looks exactly like that.

2:29Well, that area is gorgeous.

2:31It's, it's God's country, but also so abandoned by like, the potholes are crazy.

2:39I saw real heroin addicts.

2:41I'd never really seen heroin addicts before.

2:43Just sleepy people. I saw street prostitutes.

2:45That's still going on. And this is a small town, right?

2:49This is a small town.

2:49This is, I went there, Catholics have moved there to try and like, fix it.

2:55It was where Dean Martin was from.

2:56The Wu -Tang Clan kind of started out there.

2:59There's Staten Island. No, yes.

3:01But I think it's like the RZA's auntie lived there and they moved out there

3:06and then they got involved in rap in the Pittsburgh city.

3:08I got to ask, RZA's on real soon.

3:10I believe I'm right about that.

3:12They don't have a mural for them.

3:13Wow. But it's great. There's a, yeah, there's a lot of Catholic content creators there.

3:20That's interesting. And they're trying to take over town.

3:22I went there originally because New Polity is like my favorite magazine and I got

3:26to meet the guys who made it and I was so excited.

3:28So how did they hire you?

3:31Wu -Tang's RZA found a second chance in Steubenville.

3:35Wow. And they all come over to visit him.

3:37He discussed a largely undocumented era of his life in which Pittsburgh played a role.

3:44Wow. And that's one of the first conversations we had.

3:46I was like, you said something about Pittsburgh that wasn't flattering.

3:49I said, I love Pittsburgh.

3:51And you're like, you don't know anything.

3:53You're a foreigner. You don't know anything about America.

3:55Pittsburgh is a horrible place.

3:57I was like, I don't know.

3:58I had a nice time there.

3:59I thought it was good.

4:01It's just a little depressing.

4:03See, the thing about a lot of those sort of industrial kind of towns, there's

4:11not a ton of options for people.

4:14No. Pittsburgh more so than the place that you were in.

4:17But when you get to a place where there's not a lot of options and

4:20then you see real poverty, this is poverty with no solutions.

4:25You know what I mean?

4:26Not Pittsburgh. Oh, no. Just outside of Pittsburgh.

4:29I was more fucking with you.

4:30No, I saw things in West Virginia that were pretty confronting.

4:37And some of it's great.

4:39Some of the things from the poverty are wonderful.

4:41Drive -thru cigarette shop. You like that?

4:43I loved having drive -thru cigarettes.

4:47Just trying to get the kids to sleep.

4:48My wife's upset because I got her in a foreign...

4:51Again, she never signed up.

4:53Let's move to America. She was like, we'll go for three months.

4:55And I was like, fuck, I'm unemployed.

4:58I better quickly figure out how to be a stand -up comedian.

5:00I was bussing out of Steubenville.

5:04I was like... I caught the...

5:06I went... I got it.

5:07Someone gave me a lift to Pittsburgh.

5:09This is when I saw the worst stuff.

5:10I got a lift to Pittsburgh and then I caught the Greyhound from Pittsburgh to

5:14Cleveland to open for Sam Talent, who let me open...

5:18Unbelievably, let me open for...

5:19He's the best. I met him in Australia.

5:21Yeah. Such a good guy.

5:22But that bus trip from Pittsburgh to Cleveland was the most upsetting...

5:29Oh, man. People were spitting on the ground at the bus station.

5:32An illegal immigrant woman came and tried to give me a phone.

5:36I remember that vividly. Give you a phone?

5:38She tried to give me a free phone.

5:40She's like, you can have this.

5:41Because she said, you're on benefits.

5:44Everyone on benefits gets a free phone.

5:46It was some policy. She just assumed I was on benefits because I was at

5:49the Greyhound bus station. And she was illegal?

5:52I don't know if she was illegal, but she had a strong accent and a

5:55weird dress and a baby on her back and a sack full of phones.

5:58A sack full of phones?

6:00She had a sack of phones.

6:01So she was somehow in charge of distributing free phones to people?

6:04I'll never truly know what that was about.

6:07Boy, I would have investigated further.

6:09There was... I was just scared, I was just scared, there were like huge African

6:14guys spitting on the ground, and then after that I sat next to a guy

6:18who was having a full psychotic episode, I think we follow each other on Instagram

6:22now, he's gotten rid of his Instagram, but yeah, and he told me the secrets

6:25about Chris Benoit, that he was a good man.

6:28The wrestler? He killed his family, but this guy tried to tell me, he only

6:34killed his family to send them to God, and you can't blame a man for

6:37that. But it's like, alright, this is only a three hour bus trip, we're going

6:42to get through this, we're going to be fine.

6:44Oh boy. Oh man, but I did enjoy my time in that part of the

6:47world. Well you probably enjoy it now that it's over, that you survived it.

6:52You make a good point.

6:53Yeah, there's some things... If you asked me at the time.

6:55Yeah, there's some things that are not fun while they're happening, but are really fun

6:59once you got through it.

7:01I mean, I remember the people I met along the way.

7:04I remember driving to Austin, and like, it was like spring was...

7:10Like the further south we got, the more lush it became.

7:12Yeah. It was like, fuck, I might be okay.

7:15And then someone let me stay in their house.

7:16I didn't have a house to stay in, so my...

7:18A podcast listener's friend let us stay in their house.

7:21With your family? With my whole family, let us house sit for them while they

7:24were in Japan. Oh my god.

7:26That's crazy. The whole time it was like, if I don't get past the mothership

7:31now, I don't think people should come here and live in their cars with their

7:34family, but it does, you know...

7:37It lights a fire under your ass.

7:38It worked. Well that's the thing, it's like if you're forced into action...

7:42Yeah. Like you had no...

7:44Not just yourself, like you could go, oh woe is me, but when you're a

7:48father and a husband, you have children.

7:51Yeah. And people who do not have children do not understand the drive that it

7:56gives you to protect and care for those little people.

7:59It's kind of crazy. So if you'll find something...

8:03Well I don't understand how people do it without...

8:05Like I meet men who are really driven and motivated, and they have no kids.

8:09But they're like, every day they're working.

8:11I don't know what their motivation is.

8:12Before I had kids, I was just...

8:14What are you going to buy things?

8:16They're in a game. They're playing a game.

8:18No. Yeah, they're just playing this game of accumulate the most stuff, be able to

8:24brag about the most stuff you have.

8:26I'd so much rather lie down.

8:28Do you know what I mean?

8:28I would rather not do anything if I had a choice.

8:31But not really, because you love doing comedy.

8:33I love doing comedy, but I never, before I had kids, was trying to do

8:37comedy that people would enjoy.

8:39Do you know what I mean?

8:40I think that is also though because you were living in Australia and there's limited

8:45options. Right? Can you explain like the Australian system is very different than America?

8:50It's mostly festival driven, correct?

8:52It's festival driven and it's to a much greater extent, I've thought about this, it's

8:57like industry driven. Industry? Yeah.

9:00Which industry? Like managers and agents, which is one role in Australia, but they are

9:06deciding who's succeeding and TV people are deciding who's succeeding.

9:09Whereas like in America, everybody is on the road, everybody has one or two openers

9:14and there's a whole lineage of who brought who up in the business.

9:19It's like Dan Soda had Nick Mullen, Tim Dillon and Shane Gillis open for him.

9:26Like those were his openers.

9:27Right. And not because they were successful or someone wanted them to thrive.

9:32He just thought they were funny people.

9:33Right. And they got to be his openers.

9:35And you, I don't know who you were opening for, but you have people who

9:37come up and you get to pick them up.

9:40I didn't have it that way.

9:42I do it that way, but I didn't have it that way.

9:44I didn't really come up with anybody where I opened for anybody, but I had

9:47a very weird path to success.

9:49You also, you got to go to LA and just be in the milieu, like

9:53there's a scene there. There's a lot of people.

9:55Well, I came out to LA with a job already.

9:57Okay. I was on a sitcom already.

9:59You started in Boston though.

10:01Yes. Started in Boston. Look, it's very embarrassing how lucky I am.

10:07I'm like one of the luckiest people that's ever lived.

10:09Like it's stumble upon success after success.

10:13So when I was six years into comedy, I was already on TV.

10:17So I was three years into comedy.

10:20I was basically barely getting paid.

10:23I was barely a professional.

10:25Like I was getting some spots in bars and stuff like that.

10:29I was making money, but I was driving limousines.

10:30I was doing odd jobs, doing different things.

10:34And I was also still teaching at the time.

10:36I was still teaching Taekwondo for the first, maybe six months or so when I

10:44was 21. I, I think I kept teaching.

10:48And then I eventually had to quit because I realized I could not commit to

10:51doing both things. I don't want to half -ass my students and I don't want

10:56to, so, so, so for the first two, three years of comedy, barely, you know,

11:01I'm barely a comedian. Just, I'm trying, I'm trying to do it.

11:05I'm getting some laughs. Met a manager as an open miker and he brought me

11:10to New York and he's still my manager today.

11:13Wow. The best. I didn't know that.

11:15Yeah. It's total luck. Total luck.

11:17No, you're also a super handsome guy.

11:19I've seen, I've seen you then.

11:21I was boy pretty. You look like a fucking different person, first of all, not

11:24worse. It is crazy. But also a lot of those comics you started with, who

11:29maybe took longer, I won't say hideous, but they don't, they didn't look great.

11:32Well, that definitely helped me get on television.

11:34It definitely helped me get on television.

11:36So I did the MTV Half Hour Comedy Hour in 1993, I believe it was.

11:42And next thing you know, I had a development deal.

11:43Next thing you know, I was on a sitcom and living out here.

11:46I mean, they happen fast, but do you think it doesn't happen for people?

11:49Do you think there's anyone in America who has a good work ethic and is

11:53really talented that it doesn't work out for in comedy?

11:56Or does it work out eventually?

11:57You'd have to have a health issue.

11:59Health issues or a really horrible relationship.

12:02Those things could do you in.

12:03Or like you could have a drug problem.

12:04Yeah, that'll do you in.

12:05Gamble Your Money Way. That could do you in too.

12:08Yeah. Yeah, there's a bunch of things that can do you in.

12:10But that's crazy. Like that there are like not a lot of undiscovered geniuses in

12:15America in the same way.

12:17Like people will want to make money off of you if you've got it.

12:20Yeah, but there's some people that are just really horrible at marketing.

12:24Like Brian Holtzman, for instance.

12:26Yeah. Right? We had to kind of like force Brian Holtzman into the modern era.

12:32Yes. And he's always been a comics comic, and he's always been a guy that

12:37we would all sit in the back of the room at the store and watch.

12:41But he was always getting these terrible spots, and it wasn't until we broke—because he

12:45never went on the road.

12:46He never went on the road.

12:47We started out together. So at the store together in 94, we were both—I think

12:52he came in 93, and I came a year later.

12:55And he was working for like Pan Am or something?

12:57He was a dog catcher for a while.

12:59Yeah. He was a—I think he might have been a meter maid.

13:02Is he here at the—I haven't seen him yet.

13:03Yes, he's here all the time.

13:05Okay. I don't know if he'd gone off to Thailand.

13:06I don't know if he goes back and forth, but he lives out here all

13:09the time. He's the best.

13:12We—I went to church with him.

13:13I don't know if I should tell this story, but we went to church together

13:16once. And it was really lovely.

13:18He took me out for breakfast afterwards because he's Catholic.

13:20And it was so funny because the priest at the end like gave the announcements.

13:24And one of the things he was like, they're doing a parish—they're doing like—what do

13:28you call it? Like a talent show for everybody.

13:30He's just announcing this to the whole—like 300 people.

13:33And Brian goes—he goes there every week.

13:34And they go, so if anyone's got a skill, if anyone's a juggler, anyone's a

13:37comedian, come and do that for the talent show for everybody.

13:40And he—he gave no impression that he would be doing it.

13:44But I love it. You fucking spoon -faced Japs!

13:46I'm saying that he would be terrified and upset if he had brought that—he's the

13:50sweetest man. I don't want to give that away if people don't know.

13:53He's a gentleman. He's a lovely man.

13:54He's a great guy in real life.

13:56He always was. Always was.

13:57Like, I've known him forever.

13:59So we were—so he's what I would say is like an undiscovered genius because he

14:04was a guy that was just fucking killing it but never went on the road.

14:06He only worked the store.

14:08I rarely saw him even at like the Laugh Factory or the Improv.

14:13I don't—I don't—I don't know if I could ever recall seeing him at those places.

14:17But he had to consciously make the decision not to go on the road.

14:21Well, it's hard because it's not offered to you, you know?

14:25It's like, how do you do it?

14:26If you just do all your sets at the store, you kind of have to

14:30have someone take you with them, right?

14:32So what happened with me is I mostly did the road around New York and

14:38Connecticut. So when I moved to New York in, I guess, a 91 -ish?

14:43Yeah, so probably like 91 -ish.

14:45And so when I moved there, the real money, like to be able to pay

14:49bills, was in the road.

14:51It was not in New York City.

14:53New York City did not pay very well.

14:55You can get a lot of spots.

14:56But also I was really new, so maybe I couldn't have gotten a lot of

14:59spots. But I could get a lot of spots doing gigs for, like, John Shuler.

15:04He had a whole Connecticut run that you could do.

15:06They were great gigs. They'd pay, like, 300 bucks a night.

15:09Or you could do Gonzo at a bunch in New Jersey, and those paid really

15:13well. Did this collapse at some point?

15:15No, there's still probably some sort of a network of road shows.

15:20There's a—Louis has a story on someone's podcast about, like, crashing his motorcycle and then,

15:24like, a bubble bursting. I don't know if he was speaking— A bubble bursting?

15:28It was like comedy, all of a sudden, clubs started to close.

15:32Well, there's been ups and downs with that.

15:35There was—I came into comedy in 88, and apparently in 84 in Boston, it was

15:41even better. Yeah. Like, there was, like, a peak in—I'm like, really?

15:45Because when I came in, it was amazing.

15:46There was clubs everywhere. Like, nah, you missed it.

15:49So there's always been this, like, up and down of clubs closing and clubs.

15:54But, like, New York is on the rise right now.

15:56There's a bunch of clubs that have opened up in New York.

15:58New York's—comedy right now is fucking doing great.

16:01I hope—yeah, I hope they can figure it out.

16:03What do you mean? Well, I was in—last time I was in L .A., the

16:08spirit was so—I was never in L .A.

16:09for it being great. But I've heard all the stories about everyone's sports car at

16:13the back of the thing, and there's this gig and that gig.

16:15And then I was—everybody, like, has no sense that it's ever going to work for

16:19them. Like, no one's even bothered to—there's, like, three podcasts in L .A.

16:23now that people are doing.

16:24I don't want to talk it down, but, like, here, everybody is so hopeful in

16:27Austin. And I can look at, like, Peyton made it.

16:29Like, last night, I'm looking at that green room.

16:31I'm like, all of these people have money and are touring, and they came here

16:35and they got to do it.

16:36Like, and the hope and the adventure.

16:38And when I was in L .A., everyone was just— You might have picked up

16:42that night, but it's also, like, the Comedy Store has always been a top— That

16:46seems like it's getting better.

16:47Yeah, it is getting better.

16:48Well, it's definitely getting better because Rose is running it now.

16:51Yeah. She's awesome. But I think the Comedy Store has always been a top -down

16:55vibe. And if there was a bunch of, like, big -name national acts that were

17:01really cool and fun to hang out with, then it was a great vibe.

17:04And when they're gone, it always felt empty.

17:07It always felt weird. This is how it was with me in the 90s when

17:10I was there. And I think that's how it is now.

17:13We're all out here now.

17:14Yeah. You know, and it's like—and then people kind of feel abandoned, so they feel

17:18sad. You know, it feels—and then they get a little mad at you.

17:21Like, yeah, you think you're fucking me doing it in Austin.

17:24And so it develops a stupid rift, which is the dumbest thing ever.

17:28We're all on the same team.

17:29And also, you can work here, too.

17:31Like, it's so dumb. Yeah.

17:31Like, but the rift is a real thing.

17:34But it's like, you have to be around a bunch of people that are having

17:37a good time to have a good time.

17:39You can't be the only person having a good time.

17:41And the rift can be good.

17:42The rift can motivate people to—have you seen Lemay's Twitter?

17:47No, what's he doing? He's just going hard on New York people and saying fuck

17:51all of them. And Austin's number one.

17:52He's trying to—he's doing the same thing they were doing to him.

17:54That's so silly. But I think he— New York is fucking great.

17:57I think he gets very drunk and he starts swinging.

17:59There's so many great comics.

18:01Norman and Soder and fucking Andrew Schultz and David Tell's the best alive.

18:06I don't know anyone who has children.

18:07There's great comedians in New York.

18:08I don't see how you could have kids.

18:11Gaffigan raised all his kids there.

18:12In the city? Yeah, and he's a super clean Catholic guy.

18:16Yeah. I don't know how he's—I've never had to meet him.

18:19First of all, he's got some money.

18:20Money has got to help.

18:21Sent him to a nice place to go to school where they're not going to

18:24get eaten. I think the trans thing is done in the schools.

18:29Yeah, it's dropped off significantly.

18:31I had really—because we were homeschooling.

18:34And I was just aware, because my dad's a teacher, and he would say— I

18:39don't want to get him in trouble, but he would report that the numbers were

18:43developing. And I think as a social phenomenon, it seems to have like, now everyone

18:47just says they have an anxiety disorder.

18:49Well, you know when it dropped off, like, noticeably?

18:53When? When Elon bought Twitter.

18:55Would you stop pumping the content to say it's good?

18:57Well, all of a sudden, you could say whatever you wanted.

19:00Yeah. And so you could make fun of it now.

19:02And then people realize, oh, this is a completely falsely propped up narrative.

19:08Do you smoke cigars? I quit all nicotine.

19:12Interesting. Do you have alcohol?

19:14I have a drink. I can get you some alcohol.

19:15All right. If I could have a whiskey.

19:17I quit all nicotine. What happened?

19:21I was having heart palpitations.

19:23I was doing it a lot.

19:24I had a problem. I cannot do a little bit.

19:28I see. You'll just, like, you'll be backstage, you'll have one cigarette, and you're fine.

19:33Yeah. I can't. And I never smoke outside of right before a show.

19:36So I don't, I mean, I, all power to you.

19:40I can't do that. I know how to shut things off.

19:42And I also regulate. Like, I realize, like, when I have an issue, like, the

19:48nicotine pouches, I can just stop them.

19:50I've gone on vacation and just not take them, and I'm fine.

19:52I think, but I think it's my biology.

19:54No. It's almost time for spring break.

21:06the same time. I think that was the closest to serious, unpleasant.

21:22For a month, I was real bad.

21:26That's crazy. For me, I don't know what it is, man.

21:30I could just put it alone.

21:33And I monitored myself. I went on vacation for like eight days with the family,

21:37and I said, all right, no nicotine pouches.

21:39Let's see what happens. You were fine?

21:41Let's see if I go crazy.

21:42Yeah. I was waiting. Nothing.

21:44Nothing hip. Nothing. Was it you with the pouches?

21:48Was it the pouches? I loved the pouches.

21:50Interesting. I got on the pouches to get off the cigarettes, and then I had

21:54to go on the cigarettes to get off the pouches.

21:56Then I was having cigarettes and pouches and the gum, and my heart would start

22:01to go. And my mood would go way up and way down.

22:05Wow. But I got a lot done.

22:07See, I get addicted to things, like doing things, like real bad.

22:14I used to get addicted.

22:15Archery, sure. But the thing about archery is you can only do it so much.

22:19Archery's good because my bow is 80 pounds to pull back.

22:24And so if I'm pulling it back, and I have another one that's 90.

22:27And so when I'm pulling it back, 80 pounds, you can only do that so

22:30many times. You know, I could do that maybe 100 times in a day, and

22:33my fucking shoulder's blown out.

22:35If you're hunting, though, I mean, you're not shooting very often, but you wouldn't be

22:40able to get so tired that if you got a dangerous situation, you couldn't do

22:43it. No, no, no, no, no.

22:44When you're hunting, first of all, you're jacked up with adrenaline.

22:47Like you could pull a branch off a fucking tree.

22:50You're so jacked up with adrenaline.

22:52You're just trying to stay calm.

22:54Like when you're about to pull your bow, the bow pulls back effortlessly.

22:58It's like, it's like you don't even notice that it's, it pulls back so easy.

23:03You're so ramped up. You're not even thinking about it.

23:05How often are you doing that?

23:06Bow hunting? Yeah. Seriously, only a couple times a year.

23:10Okay. Because I'm elk hunting, you know.

23:12And if I get an elk.

23:13Yes. Okay. It's September. September and October.

23:16Those are the times. But in Texas, we hunt pigs sometimes.

26:38So, there's a good argument in some ways that having some predators would help.

26:44But the predators were slowly moving their way back into these areas anyway.

26:50So, they never eradicated them from Canada.

26:52So, they would come down from Canada and make their way into Minnesota, make their

26:56way into Iowa, make their way into, not Iowa, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana.

27:03They had like a small amount of wolves were kind of making their way in.

27:07Then they reintroduced a bunch of them into Montana in the 1990s, into Yellowstone.

27:13That changed everything. That changed everything.

27:15It dropped the elk population by down to like 40 % of what it used

27:19to be, which many people argue is actually a good thing because there was no

27:24predators in terms of like, there's mountain lions, but mountain lions don't kill that many

27:29elk. They'll kill one in like a week.

27:32Like families got a Yellowstone.

27:34Mm -hmm. Yeah. So, now there's just wolves.

27:36Yeah, but the wolves aren't out fucking with the people at Yellowstone.

27:40They really are just concentrating on the animals and they've like really knocked down the

27:44elk population substantially. But now they have an open hunting season on wolves in Montana

27:50because the numbers got a lot higher than they should be.

27:53Right. So, now like I know guys who hunt wolves and they go on wolf.

27:58It's very difficult to hunt them.

28:00I was going to say, it sounds more dangerous and unpleasant than hunting elk.

28:06And if you do get surrounded by them and they decide to eat you and

1:36:13leno's tonight show it didn't have nearly the impact that johnny carson did and that's

1:36:16just because by then there was so many channels yeah so when johnny carson was

1:36:30around all these other networks and then everything just expanded now you have streaming and

1:37:17so many fucking channels so the impact of a single show was not the same

2:19:59I think society is going to move much more into a science fiction existence that's

2:20:04what I think they're all horrible stories yeah there's no good ones there's like I

2:20:10don't know back to the future they get to drive around in the sky that

2:20:12seems great they make a big Jetsons Jetsons that Rosie seems like a great AI

2:20:18helper no I think there will be there's it's got to be looming that there

2:20:25as as middle -class white -collar professionals start to lose their jobs they're all fucked

2:20:30well they're they're people getting laid off but there's a motivated people ready to wouldn't

2:21:15a Netflix show that didn't do that's right numbers but it was so really weird

2:21:19it was I love it's my favorite show ever I loved it till the last

2:21:22episode oh I there was resolve for the last episode but do you have it

2:21:27you just watch the first yeah that's it is there more than one season second

2:21:30season was unbelievable and made the first season better when did the second season even

2:21:34come out I think it was just post -COVID I loved it and it's the

2:21:39second season is they wrote them so tightly that the first season is better for

2:21:44having watched the second one like there are little things that it calls forward and

2:21:47back and the movements but her second show was great I had she is great

2:21:51she's one of the most interesting people hunger struck when the second season came out

2:21:56and then the show got cancelled people chained themselves up outside of Netflix and didn't

2:22:00eat for days and eventually she right the maker of the show had to go

2:22:04to that person give them sandwiches maybe it's time for you to go on I

2:22:08don't know but it was beautiful insane people are so crazy but it's one of

2:22:13those rare I mean sometimes there is like just a great there's a great show

2:22:18there's a great thing that goes unrecognized at the time and then years later people

2:22:22I don't know how many people I've spoken to who've discovered that show in more

2:22:26recent times it doesn't happen very often used to have more sleeper hits maybe like

2:22:30Shawshank Redemption was a flop and then years later right people knew about it yeah

2:22:34I didn't know that until later I think it was on VHS that it and

2:22:37there used to be heaps of VHS hits it was a great movie too I

2:22:39don't understand why it was I think it was in competition with a bunch of

2:22:43different crazy movies at the same time yeah I think it was like one of

2:22:47those weird months where everything came out it's like I mean it's great yeah it's

2:22:52great movie it should have I can't think of another sleeper hit in recent years

2:22:58like musically sometimes things will take a while to get going but like typically if

2:23:03a show or a movie doesn't do well anymore it's done forever what Jamie is

2:23:09there I thought you made a noise did you see the LA man it's good

2:23:15it's so good I also it's tied up in a weird time in my life

2:23:20where like we had just had our first child like I had so I had

2:23:24a baby and I was terrified and I didn't know what was happening I watched

2:23:27that and I felt I could have probably We watched anything and had an emotional

2:23:30connection. I watched Parks and Rec and I cried a lot at the same time

2:23:33for that. And I'm pretty sure that wasn't as deep and meaningful.

2:24:07Back to Australia? Like when you're doing shows there, are people happy to see you?

2:24:12I think I'm insufferable. Because I'm a guy, I just, I've been here and then

2:24:16I go back home and I go, it's wonderful over there.

2:24:19You should see the size of the Snickers bars.

2:24:21They're like this. So for a few months, people like tolerated as best they could.

2:24:27But yeah, it's, it's, my audience is so different now.

2:24:30The, the Australian, the Australian audience is quite different to the American audience.

2:24:36I'm getting a lot of like, maybe because the dam is breaking and like, there's

2:24:43no one doing, I don't know, like a less tame stuff.

2:24:47But boy, the people coming out in Australia are, they're shouty.

2:24:51Shouty? Fuck yeah, my brother!

2:24:53They're excited. It's a lot of that.

2:24:54They're pumped up. They're ready to go.

2:24:56They're having their 16 standard drinks for the evening.

2:24:59You know? But overall, it's incredible.

2:25:02But you're getting a lot of people coming to see you.

2:25:05So they're hyped up. Like nothing I've ever done.

2:25:08That's really cool because those, the thing about Jeffreys is that he didn't really develop

2:25:12the same kind of following in Australia as he did in America.

2:25:17It's very, his audience in Australia is more bogany than it is.

2:25:20In America, he's got liberals coming in.

2:25:23But in Australia, they, they just wanted him to do a shooey.

2:25:26I remember when I saw that.

2:25:27They were brutally demanding that he do a shooey.

2:25:45had signed and young Tony Hinchcliffe back before he had any testosterone in his body.

2:25:51And it was like a thinner Stavros and all the Come Town Boys.

2:25:54When they were young, it's, yeah, everyone has been through there.

2:26:01That Australia has. And they're lovely boys.

2:26:28And if I'd get in, I was like, I don't want to call you and

2:26:30say, I'm sorry. I've been held up at the border.

2:26:40Do you think you're going to stay in Australia?

2:26:50The issue when we came out for that Ohio gig, I never like decided with

2:26:57my wife that we would move to America.

2:26:59We never had a conversation about it.

2:27:01She came over. We were meant to be here for three months and it turned

2:27:03into two incredible years. But like we were homeschooling the kids.

2:27:08We were not in a good position to do that.

2:27:10We have no family. We tried to hire like a nanny.

2:27:14I didn't know how to fucking do that.

2:27:15Right. I've never had someone work for me before in my home.

2:27:18Right. I don't know how to communicate.

2:27:20Right. It's odd. And then getting family over here is tough.

2:27:24But I would like to, I'm looking at how one does that.

2:27:28But it's like a whole, I understand why when people come to America, like when

2:27:31immigrants come, you go to a neighborhood full of people like you.

2:27:36Right. You know, and you get your cousin over here and his cousin.

2:27:39Everyone's trying to work for you because you need, you can't be like a lion.

2:27:42You've got to have family as best you can.

2:27:45And for me, I was thrilled.

2:27:46I mean, I like the fraternity of being a comedian is unbelievably, every problem you

2:27:52have, people know about it.

2:27:54People, you know, if there was a club that was screwing me and everyone in

2:27:58the green room was like, yes, and her name is Julie and she's a fucking

2:28:02cunt, you know, whatever. Like you, I feel, you feel known and heard and people

2:28:06can help you and you mesh in.

2:28:07But like in terms of raising kids and family, it's, it was wild.

2:28:12As an immigrant, not knowing how to like, are the schools safe?

2:28:15I didn't know because people talk about public schools in America and they go, the

2:28:19kids will get shot or they chop their dicks off.

2:28:21I didn't, I don't know.

2:28:23Something for everybody, you know?

2:28:25Or like, then there's nice Catholic schools, but you've got to like travel around.

2:28:28I was, we were over our heads.

2:28:30There's quite a few Catholic schools in Austin.

2:28:32Some of them are great.

2:28:37out what it would look like, but I have no idea.

2:29:23is an Australian person. And America is maybe the most welcoming country to immigrants in

2:29:28the world. But there's, I do feel some sense that I'll never get to be

2:29:31an American. Why not? America's a melting pot.

2:29:37Yeah, but it's melting very slowly.

2:29:40No, it's not. There's a lot of chunks in there that haven't blended in with

2:29:42the other part. Bullshit. You don't think so?

2:29:45No. You fucking pop over here and you start doing arenas, you'll feel American as

2:29:50fuck. Okay? Sometimes. It's just a matter of you achieving a financial level of success

2:29:57that's commensurate with your talent.

2:29:59That's all it is. Sometimes when the flag is going and the fireworks are popping

2:30:03off in the sky, I think I'm going to come.

2:30:26because you're literally on the launching pad.

2:30:27I know. And you look at how guys like Shane went from being a respected

2:30:33comedian in New York to being a fucking giant national talent after the SNL stuff.

2:30:38It's just about being good and getting the message out there.

2:30:41And if you're good, people love comedy.

2:30:44They'll find you, man. They'll embrace you.

2:30:47I'm going to cry. You were really lovely to me when I had to go

2:30:51and the things you said about me and how – anyway, I won't go into

2:30:54– I can't – I've had one glass of whiskey now and if I talk

2:30:57about my emotions and whatever, I've got to stop.

2:31:01Well, you're really talented and it's not often in life where someone gets to find

2:31:07themselves in a position like you were in, where you were being embraced by all

2:31:13these very successful other comedians that were willing to help you.

2:31:16Yeah. So all these podcasts you go on, it was just a matter of time

2:31:20for you where you took off.

2:31:22It was a matter of time.

2:31:23You were right there. And the talent is the most important thing.

2:31:26The most difficult thing is to be good.

2:31:28So once you get past that, then it's just about letting the world know.

2:31:31Well, this is a really good time to let the world know.

2:31:33The magic of getting to like – I did three sets last night and two

2:31:37sets the night before. And I'm just like – something is – Exciting, right?

2:31:42You just have a little idea at the first one.

2:31:43So I changed that a little bit and then the game of it starts again.

2:31:46Uh -huh. And I'm very happy right now.

2:31:48It's like I get – honestly, I get to do it even just every night

2:31:51for the next month, month and a bit.

2:31:54I get to do like one or two hours every single night and spots around

2:31:57town all this week. Yeah.

2:31:59You're going to have a hard time going back to Australia, staring at those fucking

2:32:02kangaroos. Yes, I am. It'll be fine.

2:32:07So do you think that you could envision a scenario where your wife would be

2:32:11open to try it again?

2:32:16will work. And we – I do love Adelaide.

2:32:19Like when I'm there, I have some sense of being at home that is profound.

2:32:23Like I look up at the sky and I feel like there's a roof over

2:32:27me, like in a comforting way.

2:32:31But it's also maybe the worst place to develop as a – I mean, we've

2:32:34had great stand -ups come out of there.

2:32:36And I love Adelaide. And there are people running rooms.

2:32:38But like we don't have a club.

2:32:41We don't have a club.

2:32:42We don't have one club going – it's a city of 1 .4 million people.

2:32:45And there's no – we have places where they do comedy.

2:32:48But in terms of like Thursday, Friday, Saturday, early show, late show, line -up shows,

2:32:5310, 15 minutes, it's not there.

2:32:54But do you have enough talent to support a club?

2:32:57It comes in waves in the way that any medium -level comedy city like –

2:33:02all of a sudden it'll build up and there'll be great people.

2:33:05And then they'll all go.

2:33:06People go to Melbourne, Sydney.

2:33:07Right. And I will say that's been one nice thing about Australia not letting talent

2:33:13come through for so long and also the U .K.

2:33:15declining is I now know heaps of people who've come to America like after me

2:33:20and just before me. And there are heaps of Aussies flooding into this country now.

2:33:26Amos – my best friend Amos Gill just got passed at the cellar and I'm

2:33:29so like – I'm so proud of him.

2:33:32Oh, that's awesome. He's just gigging all the time and he's getting to – he

2:33:34just recorded a special in Denver.

2:33:36Nice. Yeah. And it's like Blake Freeman is doing well and I get all these

2:33:41Aussies are hitting me up and go, can you get me into the mothership?

2:33:44And it's like, well, not you but, you know, maybe some other ones.

2:33:48That's the problem, right? I don't know how many I've put on in front of

2:33:51Adam on the Mondays but I've had to stop.

2:33:55You can't use up that currency on people that don't deserve it, you know?

2:34:02They have to be ready and they have to put in the work.

2:34:04There's a lot of people that think you're going to provide them with a shortcut.

2:34:12We had a few of those guys come from L .A.

2:34:14that were like, their careers had floundered horribly in L .A.

2:34:18due to laziness and fill in the blank.

2:34:21And then they tried to, like, restart themselves in Austin.

2:34:24I'm like, no. Like, you can't half -ass this thing.

2:34:29This thing is hard to do and there's too many people trying to do it

2:34:31all the way. Yeah. We're flooded with people trying to do it all the way.

2:34:35If you think you're going to come over here and half -ass it because it's

2:34:38like this new place and now it'll be exciting again and they don't know you.

2:34:41No. Like, we fucking know you.

2:34:43But I think people don't love it.

2:34:44People love the thought of being good at it and being respected.

2:34:48But, like, when I got to open for Mark Norman in Australia, which is how

2:34:52I met him, and he'll do, you know, like, a 2 ,000 -seat theater early

2:34:56show and then the late show and then he'll go, what else is open?

2:42:15And so then he was tried for it criminally.

2:42:18And so I think that's how he got off.

2:42:21He got off because his lawyer argued that the settlement of the first here, we'll

2:42:31That's it. So it says Bill Cosby's defense successfully overturned his 2018 sexual assault conviction

2:42:38in 2021 by arguing that a prior prosecutor promised not to charge him, rendering his

2:42:43incriminating deposition testimony inadmissible. The defense led by Jennifer Bonjean argued that using his testimony

2:42:52violated his rights, framing the prosecution as a violator of due process.

2:42:59Because it was part of his willingness to testify was that he couldn't be prosecuted
