3:14Today, we are going to be talking about terrorism on U .S.

3:18soil. It's a tough topic.

3:20We've had a couple of attacks in the past week.

3:23We also saw an attack in New York City, an attempted attack in New York

3:28City. These things are, I think, scarier today, because as we go after the leading

3:34sponsor of terror in the entire world, we have concerns about what could possibly stir

3:41up here at home. And I think it's an interesting conversation because so many people

3:45have come to me and been like, are you mad that we went to war

3:49because this is now causing people to create these terror attacks on U .S.

3:54soil? And I think to myself, what a naive view of things.

3:59Like, those people weren't going to, they were just going to sit here and silently

4:02hate us unless we provoked something.

4:05Because if they were here planning, I believe that they have always been here planning

4:09and that these people exist and that we need to be careful about it.

4:12So I thought, well, who can I talk to about this?

4:15And we found Rafael Manguel.

4:17He is a fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor of City Journal

4:22and a member of the Council on Criminal Justice.

4:26Rafael, thank you so much for joining me today.

4:28Thank you for having me.

4:29I appreciate it. Absolutely. So as we look at this, I know you've had a

4:34lot to say about what's going on in New York.

4:36New York is interesting to me because we have this mayor who was elected on

4:41essentially being like, I don't love policing.

4:43I don't want these special units that are going to look for terror and take

4:49care of issues like this.

4:50And I don't really want anybody to police protests.

4:54I don't want, you know, let them get out of hand if they want.

4:57That kind of all changed over the past week.

5:00So what's your opinion of what is happening in Manhattan and where Mayor Mamdani goes

5:05from here? Yeah, I mean, I wrote a piece for City Journal about this in

5:08the wake of that attack.

5:09And my basic take was that, you know, this needs to be a wake -up

5:12call for Mayor Mamdani. I understand that he's young.

5:15I understand that he's only been on the job for a couple of months.

5:18But the reality is, is that New York always has and always will be a

5:22prime. target for terror suspects.

5:25You know, it is very much considered the heart of the nation, even though it's

5:28not the capital, right? It's where we had not one but two separate attacks on

5:32the World Trade Center just in my lifetime, right?

5:35So this is something that is going to be ongoing.

5:37And I think the mayor needs to be sat down by the adults in the

5:41room and made to understand that the risk is very real, that it is ever

5:44-present, and that it needs to be mitigated.

5:46And now that's where we start to get into, you know, some of the steps

5:50that we can take. And, you know, one of the questions that I always get

5:53when something like this happens is, well, what can we do, right?

5:56I mean, you know, what is it that we can do about this?

5:58And when you're talking about a city like New York, you're talking about an incredibly

6:01wealthy city with a lot of resources at hand.

6:04And if those resources are invested properly in the one institution that is designed and

6:09built to protect the city, that is the NYPD, then we know that we can

6:13do a good amount of work to mitigate some of these risks.

6:16It doesn't mean that we're going to sear out the risk.

6:17It doesn't mean there won't be another attack at some point in the future.

6:20But the NYPD has counterterrorism capabilities.

6:23They have people who are trained in intelligence gathering and counterintelligence.

6:28They have special units. But hasn't he said he specifically wants to get rid of

6:31those units? Well, he has come out in support of abolishing a group called the

6:37SRG, which stands for Strategic Response Group.

6:40It is a special unit within the NYPD's Critical Response Command.

6:44And it's basically meant to respond to large casualty events, to do large crowd control.

6:49But their members are specifically trained in counterterrorism.

6:53And so this is why I was so perplexed by the context of the bombing

6:59a couple of Saturdays ago.

7:00You had an individual who was leading a protest that was touching the subject matter

7:06of Islamic terrorism about a week out from the hostilities kicking off in Iran.

7:10So those are two red flags right there.

7:12That individual inspired a counterprotest.

7:15He has a history of being counterprotested, sometimes violently.

7:20So that's another red flag.

7:21And then all of this is meant to take place outside a very sensitive location

7:24in Gracie Mansion. And yet SRG was not on the scene.

7:28They were on standby nearby.

7:30But you have to start to suspect that that decision reflected the mayor's distaste for

7:35that group. And so I'm hoping that this will be the wake up call that

7:39he needs. Certainly, it's a wake up call for a lot of people in New

7:42York City. And the question is going to be, what do we do from here?

7:45You know, it's not just the SRG that the mayor has come out against.

7:47He is someone who has been critical of other surveillance tactics, particularly in and around

7:53mosques and the Islamic jihadist threat.

7:56But that's something that we need to reconsider now that we know that these attacks

8:01are going to happen. I mean, we've had a handful in just a matter of,

8:04you know, 10 days or so.

8:06Well, let's be honest. I mean, he doesn't really like the police in general.

8:10He made it pretty clear that he's not a fan of policing in the years

8:14that he was on this state assemblyman man.

8:17And then he gets into he he's campaigning and he's still somewhat anti -police.

8:24I think he he kind of was waffling because he's trying to get everybody's vote.

8:28And people went, oh, I think when he gets into office, he's actually going to

8:31be pro -police. But then just a couple of weeks ago, we have that snowball

8:35fight and he made it pretty clear that he's like, I'm not going to take

8:38care of the cops. Then they're still there for him.

8:41I just want to point out that when this happens at Gracie Mansion, they show

8:45up. That's right. That's right.

8:47They always show up. And that's that's the thing that really is the most inspiring

8:50thing about law enforcement in this country.

8:52Right. Whenever they take action, they are by definition subordinating their own safety and security

8:57in service of the communities that they are working in at the time.

9:01And they do that knowing that it's a thankless job.

9:04They do that knowing sometimes that the people they're serving are openly hostile to their

9:08very existence like Mayor Mondani.

9:11But but I think you're right.

9:12I think his natural disposition is to be oppositional toward law enforcement.

9:17And he has fallen right into that, you know, after taking office, you know, people

9:22say, well, he's he made these changes on the campaign trail, at least in his

9:25rhetoric. And I think, you know, his hand was essentially forced.

9:28You had a really tragic mass casualty event happened during the campaign.

9:33You had the mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue where an NYPD officer did rule

9:38Islam, lost his life. And I think that that really kind of made him understand

9:43that if he was going to have a real shot at getting the vote of

9:46moderates or people who were on the fence about him, that he was going to

9:49have to at least change his tune.

9:52I didn't buy it at the time.

9:54I very much don't buy it now.

9:56And I suspect that some New Yorkers are having buyer's remorse on that.

9:59Hmm. Interesting. So let's go to Michigan.

10:03Yeah, we had this attack in Michigan.

10:06It was interesting to see how this went down, because obviously they went over one

10:12of the biggest that he went after one of the biggest synagogues in the entire

10:15country. It's called Temple Israel.

10:17It's in Bloomfield, Michigan. The guy had family over in Lebanon, members of Hezbollah.

10:23They were targeted in an attack and killed.

10:27They lost children in that attack, which I think is a devastating situation.

10:33Also, this is why parents that become terrorists put their kids in danger.

10:39Let's be honest. Like, this is not this country.

10:41This is another country. This is war.

10:44This is terror. He has obvious ties to this family.

10:47That is concerning. He is a naturalized citizen.

10:50here in Michigan. Then he decides that he's going to attack a synagogue, Temple Israel,

10:58in Bloomfield, and he packs his car filled with fireworks.

11:02So obviously this is kind of an amateur attempt, but still we know that this

11:07is someone coming from a place of having family members who also launch terror attacks.

11:13He drives into the synagogue, has a gun.

11:17We've heard that there were shots fired.

11:19He ends up dying in the attack.

11:23He's the only one. Thankfully, he is the only person.

11:26None of the children in the synagogue were hurt, but it could have been incredibly

11:29bad. The reporting after the fact is so interesting to me because these headlines are

11:36like, man drives into Temple after family members are killed in Lebanon.

11:42Right. As if it was someone else's fault, but the attack.

11:49Right. And as if anything that we can even justify that any type of grief

11:54would be acceptable for you to then attempt to kill hundreds of children.

11:59Right. And this is often coming from the very same people who, in the wake

12:02of an attack like 9 -11, for example, cautioned against blaming entire groups for what

12:10a handful of individuals did.

12:11And they were right then, but they're wrong now.

12:13They're not willing to be consistent in terms of their reasoning.

12:15And it is frustrating. Let me tell you, that's why I think it is frustrating

12:20that we can't do something when we know because they knew that he was connected.

12:25And that to me is frustrating.

12:27I have friends in that area.

12:29I have friends over in Hamtramck and Dearborn who have said, you don't know what

12:32it was like for us after 9 -11.

12:35Well, OK, so if we allow unvetted people to come in with radicalized ideology, that

12:42will happen. Those preconceived notions will come back if we don't do what the president

12:48has been talking about, making our country safe.

12:51That's exactly right. I think one of the main lessons here is that we have

12:55to be much more thorough when it comes to vetting and making decisions about who

12:59gets to come into our country.

13:01The fact that this individual seems to have had family members who were members of

13:05a foreign terrorist organization, that should have been a flag red enough to stop that

13:10process in its tracks. And yet he ended up in the United States anyway.

13:14And, you know, so that's a wake up call in a way, because it just

13:18makes very clear that there are likely already many, many people here who are openly

13:24sympathetic to foreign terrorist organizations and are willing to die in order to attack the

13:30United States. And, you know, look, some of these individuals, like the alleged attacker in

13:35Bloomfield, you know, their ties are going to be clear, right?

13:40There are other individuals who are going to end up here who are either naturalized

13:44as young children who are going to be radicalized while on U .S.

13:47soil. And that's a risk that, you know, is not as easily mitigatable.

13:52Which that kind of sounds like what happened in New York, right?

13:55Yeah, right. So these are two individuals who are U .S.

13:59citizens. They're teenagers. You know, they they got radicalized at some point in the last

14:04few years and decided to drive from Pennsylvania to New York to carry out a

14:07terrorist attack. And that's an idea that really hits home for me.

14:11You know, a lot of people don't know this, but I went to a high

14:14school on Long Island called Clark High School.

14:16And one of my classmates was an individual named Samir Khan.

14:19And in the wake of 9 -11, this individual started making comments that were very

14:25disturbing in support of the attack and, you know, kind of withdrew from mainstream life

14:32on campus. And we would all kind of whisper to each other.

14:34And it turned out that he would graduate and then go on to join Al

14:38Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and was eventually killed in a drone strike with Amra

14:42al -Awlaki. And so, you know, all that to say is like these individuals could

14:45be sitting next to you right now.

14:46We wouldn't know. Or sitting next to your child in class and you don't know.

14:51That's exactly right. And so the question is, what do you do about that?

14:54And, you know, the answer is unfortunately not very much.

14:57We live in a free society, which means, you know, that we're going to have

15:00to absorb some risk. But that doesn't mean that there aren't things that we can

15:03do to harden soft targets.

15:05Right. So, you know, I believe it was security at the at Temple Israel that

15:10that ended up taking down the attacker.

15:12Right. So we have to think about how to use private security to our advantage,

15:16how to harden soft targets.

15:18And in cities like New York that are, you know, known terror targets, we have

15:22to make sure that we are investing in counterterrorism assets through our local law enforcement

15:27agencies and having cross -agency communication so that everyone is on the same page about

15:31threats and how to approach them.

19:51that there were security guards in Temple Israel that obviously when he came through, they

19:56shot. There was a bit of a firefight.

19:59He ended up dying. I'm not sure that that's how he died.

20:02I don't think that's been reported yet, but it was that he was encountered immediately.

20:07We know that there had also been like some practice run with the FBI in

20:11Temple Israel. And I think that, you know, the folks that I've talked to, I

20:15have friends that are also, one of my friends that's over there was saying my

20:20kids were at a country day school just down the street, a Jewish country day

20:23school just down the street.

20:24And this was devastating to think that this could have been their school.

20:29I think that that's how all parents feel right now, though, about our schools in

20:33general. It's like every school seems like a soft target right now, whether it is

20:38a terror attack from another country or a terror attack from someone who is just

20:42going to go in and shoot up a school.

20:44I think of those two things as the same.

20:46And I think a lot of us across the country have said, how do we

20:51prevent? And people go, oh, you can't you can't 100 percent prevent.

20:55But I think we were shown at Temple Israel that you can be prepared.

21:00And instead of just keeping our heads in the sand and saying we don't want

21:04to have people we don't have armed guards in our school.

21:07Well, maybe there's a way to do it that you still are protected.

21:11I mean, I feel like there was a major lesson that we got out of

21:14Michigan this past week. No, I think that's exactly right.

21:16And I understand that it makes people uncomfortable, you know, to grapple with the risk

21:23to their own lives and to the lives of the people that they care most

21:26about. And a lot of people, they deal with that psychologically by burying their heads

21:30in the sand and pretending that the risk isn't there.

21:32But we can't do that.

21:33Right. And there are steps that we can take.

21:35And, you know, yes, is it going to cost us some some part of ourselves?

21:40Maybe. But that alternative is much more preferable.

21:44So, um, you know, to the worst possible outcomes and so yeah it's true we

21:49can't zero out the risk yes it's true the risk is still statistically remote but

21:53I think that you know these these events teach us a very important lesson which

21:57is that there are things that we can do to harden our soft targets taking

22:01those steps you know are worthwhile I mean it's certainly it's certainly proved to be

22:06the case for Temple Israel but there are other steps that we can take as

22:09well and some of the other terrorist attacks that have happened recently you know highlight

22:13some of those lessons I'm thinking here of the shooting at Old Dominion where you

22:17had an individual who was previously incarcerated after being convicted of offering material support to

22:24a foreign terrorist organization in ISIS and yet you have a judge giving a sentence

22:29almost half that of what was requested and then the individual still being eligible for

22:34early release it's like you know there's just another lesson here which is that when

22:39we do get lucky and catch these individuals before they do harm we have to

22:44do what's necessary to keep them incapacitated and that's another one where we don't know

22:49how bad that attack would have been had it hadn't been those students because they

22:54they wrestled him down I mean they took they took care of him on their

22:58own we still ended up losing someone with an unnecessary life loss to your point

23:04I've heard experts even say that he got 11 years I think what he served

23:09six of those years so he was sentenced for essentially colluding on terrorism yeah yeah

23:17it's just like being a traitor you would think that 11 years is not even

23:20an option right I mean you know when you consider his age at the time

23:24of sentencing right we knew that this man was going to be released given that

23:29sentence as a young person who with no indication right that he changed his ideology

23:34with no indication that he would no longer be a threat and yet he was

23:38just released into the community for what because he completed some you know treatment program

23:42you know this highlights just a broader problem with the left with respect to criminal

23:48justice one that I've been writing about for about a decade now you know the

23:52left is consistently pushing this narrative that America has a quote -unquote mass incarceration problem

23:58that you know we are draconian police state that we're too harsh that our criminal

24:01justice system is just you know locking people up and throwing away the key and

24:06the the that couldn't be further from the truth the reality is that ending up

24:10in prison in the United States is quite difficult to do it takes some doing

24:14you have to be either convicted of a very very very serious often violent defense

24:19or you have to have a very very lengthy criminal history and you know this

24:23is illustrative of that because you have an individual who is convicted of one of

24:27the most serious things that I think it can be convicted of which is offering

24:30support to a foreign terrorist organization and and you know plotting against the United States

24:36of America and yet this guy still gets out before serving even a full decade

24:40he should never have been allowed out right the option should have been either life

24:45in prison the death penalty or deportation upon release and yet you know that that

24:52that wasn't the case and so I think this is just another lesson learned here

24:55when we do get lucky when we when our when our our our systems work

25:00to identify threats before harm comes to pass we have to do everything we can

25:05to mitigate those threats for as long as we possibly can that individual should have

25:09received the longest possible sentence under the law and he should have been made to

25:13serve every single day of it had that happened these individuals would have still been

25:17alive so is there a way to go back and look at other people that

25:20are in this situation because this was this was a perfect example of someone who

25:27was given a light sentence got out early a very light sentence the wrong sentence

25:33I can't even like put enough emphasis on they just gave this guy a break

25:38he was obviously a bad dude he came out and did exactly what he was

25:42planning on doing from the beginning it was like did you just give him six

25:46years to sit there and think about how to do it you know this was

25:49obviously a bad guy how many other guys are like this that I believe the

25:54left would just I believe the left would open the prison doors of every prison

25:58in this country and just let everybody go free without asking what they did well

26:02I think they would certainly like to to do that for a good number of

26:05the prisoners right I mean you know just just relatively recently you had people like

26:09Joe Biden on the campaign trail promising to cut incarceration by 50 percent I mean

26:13do you understand the level of criminal you would have to release in order to

26:17get to that number I mean we're so often unfavorably compared to other western European

26:22democracies on issues like incarceration and what people don't get is that for us to

26:26match to achieve parity with those western European democracies we would have to release something

26:31like 75 percent of our incarcerated population these are people who are convicted of the

26:35most serious violent offenses who have somewhere between 10 and 12 prior arrests five and

26:40six prior convictions and yet are still going to get out after serving a median

26:44amount of time that you know hovers around 16 months in this country despite all

26:49of that and yet you know the the narrative continues this this idea that we

26:53have a mass incarceration problem it's one that New York City's mayor's over on mom

26:57don he ran on right I mean this is his his rise to office was

27:01built around two things you know defunding the police and no new jails and you

27:07know again like these lessons are going to need to be learned over and over

27:11again but this history is so recent that it really makes you scratch your head.

27:15Why on earth make these choices?

27:18I wish I had a good answer for you, but I do think that a

27:22federal official, state officials need to go back, look at who's incarcerated for these kinds

27:26of charges, reassess how we can keep them behind bars, whether it's with new charges

27:32or just, you know, really upping the intelligence gathering apparatus so that these individuals can

27:38be monitored when they're released.

27:40Well, and we need people that are in Washington who are willing to go through

27:44and do that. We have a very interesting situation right now with Democrats refusing to

27:49fund DHS. And it's a very strange situation because they've fully funded ICE, but they're

27:55like, we don't want ICE to actually have money.

27:57So we're not going to pay for TSA.

27:59Nobody can travel anywhere. It's a total nightmare.

28:02We have now three attacks under our belt and still no Homeland Security funding.

28:07It is outrageous. And I'll say here in Michigan, the senator from Michigan, Alyssa Slotkin,

28:13voted against DHS funding and then went out the next day and was like, this

28:16is why we need DHS funding.

28:18Give me a break. And I say this because she is very manipulative.

28:24She is a former CIA analyst or not an analyst.

28:29Yes, a former CIA analyst who was out there and she knows exactly how to

28:35manipulate the words that she uses.

28:37I think she's incredibly dangerous.

28:38I think that she is a darling among the Democrat Party.

28:41And as we are going into the midterms and then the 2028 election, I heard

28:47people saying, you know, who they don't even have a candidate.

28:50There's nobody. There's nobody rising in the ranks.

28:53And I am reminded that Barack Obama came out as a freshman senator and ran

28:59for office and became president of the United States.

29:01And she is currently a freshman senator.

29:04And I say that because I also think a CIA analyst would have information about

29:09exactly how much how many terror threats there are and how exposed we are in

29:16this country. Even former CIA analyst Sarah Adams has been reporting on this for quite

29:22a while now, saying that we have thousands of terror threats.

29:25And she said she believes there will be an attack.

29:27So how does one CIA analyst come out and say, we're we are really, truly

29:34under threat on U .S.

29:35soil and the other who has the actual power to do something about it doesn't

29:40do anything? Yeah, well, I think this is the problem with politics, right?

29:44I mean, you know, partisan politics elevates being a team player above everything else.

29:49And this is one of the things I think frustrates a lot of the American

29:51people about the individuals that are supposed to represent them.

29:54And it's one of the reasons why Congress as an institution continues to poll so

29:58low in terms of, you know, trust of the American people.

30:01I think everyone understands that government's first and foremost duty is to keep the citizenry

30:06safe. That is what it exists to do.

30:08Right. If, you know, going back to the Federalist Papers, if men were angels, no

30:12government would be necessary. Right.

30:14That is that is at the core of the American idea.

30:16And so I think it is mind boggling for people when they see, you know,

30:20funding for the sort of key institutions tasked with keeping the country safe, being held

30:26hostage as a political football.

30:28No one benefits from that.

30:30You know, I think Democrats should absolutely get behind a vote to fully fund these

30:36agencies, especially in the wake of these terrorist attacks.

30:39And if you can't do that then, then, you know, I don't know what the

30:42future is ultimately going to hold.

30:44But I think it's going to be up to the American people in these next

30:47couple of election cycles to articulate to their elected representatives just how important these issues

30:53are to them. Let's take a quick commercial break.

34:50Sure. There has been discussion of denaturalization for people who have been in some way

34:57connected to terror. And I think that there are a lot of people that say,

35:00if you can denaturalize someone, where does that stop?

35:04And there's a lot of fear over that concept.

35:08But if you know that the person is connected to an outside terror org, that

35:15they want to harm Americans, that they have not assimilated, they do not see this

35:19as their country. Should that be an option?

35:23I think it should absolutely be on the table.

35:25Look, denaturalization is already something that exists.

35:28It's already an option that can be exercised.

35:32The idea that someone remains entitled to naturalized citizenship after pledging loyalty to a foreign

35:42terrorist organization and trying to actively undermine and attack the very country that has given

35:47them a home. I think this is one of those sort of 80 -20 issues

35:52where the vast majority of Americans will understand that, no, there's actually nothing really all

35:58that controversial about denaturalizing those individuals.

36:02Now, you know, you asked exactly the right question, which is where does that, where

36:07does the buck stop, right?

36:08You know, where is the line going to be?

36:10And I think that's ultimately a question that has to be answered through the political

36:13process. I think most Americans, you know, understand that, yeah, we should give people, you

36:18know, the hospitality and all the rights that come with U .S.

36:23citizenship. And, you know, so denaturalization probably shouldn't be on the table for something as,

36:28you know, low level as like, you know, a petty criminal conviction, for example, right?

36:34Or even something more serious, right?

36:36I mean, you know, a regular American citizen isn't going to be denaturalized for, say,

36:40DUI. But when you're talking about offering material support to foreign terrorist organizations, when you're

36:46talking about plotting to kill Americans, I think that absolutely has to be on the

36:52table. And it would be crazy for it not to be.

36:55It seems like anything, anything now that is not about keeping someone here, not, you

37:02know, there's this, people have called it suicidal empathy.

37:05That we are a society that believes that everybody needs to be coddled and everybody

37:11needs to be protected and everybody is the same.

37:14And I think that is a hard thing for Americans to that concept of other

37:19cultures are very different from ours.

37:22And there are times when people from a different culture that want to do us

37:25harm do come to the United States.

37:28And I also think it is confusing when you see like the attack in New

37:32York. You have to somewhat say, well, where were the parents in that case?

37:38Because they came over and they were they became naturalized citizens.

37:42So then how far back do you look and do you connect the child and

37:46the parent to the same thing?

37:48And I think that that's something even we're seeing today in school shootings.

37:51When a child goes into a school, we've now seen parents that have been prosecuted

37:57for that that crime as well.

37:59So how deep do you think this would go if you ended up with a

38:02situation like we saw in New York?

38:04Yeah, I mean, it's hard to say, right?

38:06I mean, because there at least as of now, there's no.

38:08indication that the parents of those two teenagers, you know, shared their views.

38:13I mean, these are people who were very successful in America, you know, who by

38:16all accounts seem to have at least checked a lot of the boxes that constitute

38:21the American dream, right? These two individuals were raised in beautiful, very expensive homes in

38:26a nice quaint suburb of Pennsylvania.

38:29You know, so there was every reason for them to continue the assimilation process.

38:34And the same could have been said of Samir Khan, my former classmate, right?

38:38This was an individual who was living a very nice and comfortable life in an

38:42idyllic Long Island suburb. And so, you know, I think this just highlights the unpredictable

38:47nature of this ideology and, you know, highlights that a lot of people can be

38:53susceptible to it. I think Americans have sort of grown accustomed to this idea that

38:57life here is so good because we understand and share the sort of cultural inheritance

39:03of the United States that, you know, it's almost impossible to come away from that

39:08hostile to it. But there are a lot of people who don't share that ideology,

39:12whose brains and hearts are much more fragile than ours and much more susceptible to

39:17being talked into this sort of toxic, hateful, and ultimately suicidal ideology that inspires groups

39:25like ISIS and al -Qaeda and Hezbollah and Hamas.

39:30And we have to be worried about that.

39:32We have to understand that those threats are real.

39:34They're here. And we have to take steps in the face of them to mitigate

39:38our risks. You make such a good point about the fact that these people oftentimes

39:43don't know that their own family member is being radicalized.

39:46And this is happening in weird spaces and dark places on the internet, I imagine.

39:52I think we watch so many movies and we were like, my mom will always

39:57be like, you know, if this were my afternoon show, they would confess at the

40:01end and they would be put in jail.

40:03And I'm like, yes, I know if life were only like, you know, whatever Tucker

40:07and Rex or Rex and Hutch or whatever it is that she watches every day.

40:12But honestly, I think we do think that the government has our back, you know,

40:17like they're listening to everything.

40:18They know exactly what's going on.

40:19They're in all these dark places.

40:21How much do you think the government really knows?

40:24How often are these people?

40:25I mean, for example, the guy, obviously, the old Dominion guy, they knew a lot

40:28and he wasn't being monitored.

40:30So we have this distrust for they do know or they don't know and they're

40:34not doing enough. What is what do you think is really happening?

40:37Yeah, I mean, here again, just we have another example of how the sort of

40:41left and libertarian left critique of, you know, these institutions is so off base, right?

40:47You have this entire narrative built around the idea that America is a surveillance state,

40:52that every single phone call, text and email is being monitored and read and the

40:56NSA is is in every single room and there's no such thing as privacy anymore.

41:00And yet you can have an individual who is convicted of a terrorist attack or

41:04trying to plot one, you know, leaves prison and then no one's watching him to

41:11the point where he's able to acquire firearms, plan and then carry out an attack

41:15on a major American university.

41:17And so, again, I hope that this is a wake up call for people.

41:21America is a very large country.

41:22We're talking about 350 some odd million people.

41:25You can't watch 350 million people all day, every day.

41:29There are threats that are going to go and fly under the radar.

41:33We have to be attuned to that and we have to invest more in all

41:37of the things that people say we've been doing too much of, but clearly haven't

41:41been doing enough of. Yeah, it's very interesting when we have situations like this that

41:46people are saying, dismantle DHS altogether.

41:50And here we're talking about this, like there's there's never enough ability to make sure

41:55that the bad guys are being weeded out and that we actually see them and

41:59to think that we would get rid of an entire organization or entire agency that

42:03we we founded after 9 -11 to make sure we were safe.

42:07I mean, it is there is quite a bit of controversy going on right now

42:11in the country and certainly in the political space, especially as we come up to

42:14these midterms and we have people going, why are we not protecting this country?

42:19Why are we not concerned with protecting this country?

42:22And then the Democrats are very convincing in why you shouldn't.

42:26And I just never thought we would get here, especially after you see attack after

42:30attack. The spin that they can put on it, like I said, having people coming

42:35out and saying, well, these attacks wouldn't have happened if we hadn't attacked Iran.

42:39And I'm like, these people were here.

42:40They didn't move here yesterday.

42:42What are you talking about?

42:43You know, so I think it's fascinating.

42:45I think what you do is fascinating.
