Jack Schlossberg on Trump Failures and his Campaign
3/9/202614 mincomplete
0:00I acknowledge that this is a war.
0:01This is a war right now.
0:03I think it's an operation.
0:05And with that, Republicans are refusing to work yet again.
0:09Yep, as you know, the MAGA Republicans have effectively shut down the House of Representatives
0:15right now. Where are they going while the American people need to understand what the
0:21hell is happening with this war on Iran, this unlawful war where American soldiers, American
0:27service members are losing their lives, where our economy is tanking, where it's the largest
0:33oil shock in world history?
0:36Well, the MAGA Republicans have went to Doral in Miami.
0:40They're in Donald Trump's resort as we speak.
0:44They are taking a vacation, a MAGA Republican retreat.
0:49I kid you not, that is where they are at right now.
0:52MAGA Mike left the House.
0:54You saw him right there.
0:55And then they all went to Doral to hang with Donald Trump and watch him
1:00golf. And they are doing events right now in the Donald J.
1:05Trump ballroom. MAGA Mike and all the MAGA influencers are going to be there.
1:10And they're going to be talking about how great they think everything is.
1:15It should be noted if you look at the gas prices, as Meredith Lee Hill
1:18points out, just outside Trump's Doral, Florida resort.
1:23By the way, all the money being funneled there is just absurd.
1:27They'll be greeted to see what Donald Trump has done to gas prices because gas
1:32prices are surging. Now, before MAGA Mike left, he also wanted everybody to know that
1:38it is a misconception that war is a bad thing.
1:43War is about peace, is what MAGA Mike Johnson wanted everybody to know before going
1:48to Doral. Play this clip.
1:49One last note. There's a misconception that Operation Epic Fury is in any way a
1:55diversion from Republican demands for peace.
1:58It's the opposite. And MAGA Mike also wanted everyone to know that, sure, Congress has
2:03a constitutional right to exercise oversight over things like war.
2:09In fact, it's actually Congress that is the one required for there to be a
2:14declaration of war. But MAGA Mike says what strength is, is not doing that.
2:20So let me get this straight.
2:21War is peace and strength is weakness.
2:25Here, play this clip. In my estimation, this course of action was necessary, lawful and
2:29effective and reversing it now would weaken America.
2:33Congress has a constitutional right to exercise its oversight authority and we will.
2:37But we also have a duty and obligation not to undercut our own national security.
2:42Now, at this retreat in Doral in Miami right now, you have MAGA Republicans making
2:50posts like this. Congressman Andy Ogles writes, Muslims don't belong in American society.
2:58Pluralism is a lie. The kind of ideas coming out of Doral, Florida right now,
3:03you've got Donald Trump making posts like this.
3:07Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iran national women's soccer team
3:13to be forced back to Iran where they will most likely be killed.
3:17Don't do it, Mr. Prime Minister.
3:19Give asylum. The U .S.
3:21will take them if you won't.
3:23Thank you for your attention to this matter, Donald J.
3:25Trump. You know, Donald, the U .S.
3:27is actually... actually taking Iranians who are here and sending them back to Iran.
3:33Your whole policy is not taking Iranians for asylum.
3:37And so now you want to use this as some bizarre propaganda distraction piece, but
3:42that's what's going on in Doral right now.
3:44I want to bring in Jack Schlossberg.
3:47Jack, it's great to see you, is running for Congress in New York's 12th congressional
3:52district. Jack, it's great to see you.
3:55I want to get into kind of your policies.
3:57I want to get into why you're running.
4:00But the why may be a little bit answered by the lead in right there,
4:05which is Congress ain't working for us.
4:08And they're out there vacationing and doing whatever the hell Donald Trump wants them to
4:13be doing, but it ain't helping us.
4:15Can you talk to us about that first?
4:18Absolutely. Thank you so much for having me on the program, Ben.
4:21I'm a long time listener and I'm so happy to be here with you.
4:26And thanks for all that you guys are doing to get the message out there.
4:29Yes, the Republican retreat. Our Congress isn't working for us.
4:34And that's a huge reason why I'm running.
4:36I think we need to get people in Congress who are going to shake things
4:39up, new generation with new energy, new creativity, and new ideas.
4:43And we need to be doing a lot better because the problems that we're not
4:46solving every day that goes by are just things that we're going to have to
4:50deal with down the line.
4:51It's going to cost you and me time and money for the rest of our
4:54adult lives, all the time that we're missing right now and all the issues that
4:58we're not addressing. So I like the idea of a Republican retreat.
5:02I do think that the GOP is on its heels in many ways around the
5:06country. We've seen that from Democratic voters turning out in record numbers.
5:09And I think we're going to keep seeing that in the midterm elections.
5:11But I really want to say this because yes, they're in retreat.
5:15They may be on their heels.
5:17Their policies are wildly unpopular.
5:19Gas prices are going to go up.
5:20Everything is more expensive for everybody, not just here in New York 12, where people
5:24are struggling to think that they can raise a family here.
5:27People can't afford to pay their rent.
5:29Things are not good in New York 12 and around the country because our economy
5:32is not affordable. It's not affordable to live in New York and so many other
5:37places. But here's the real deal.
5:39Yes, a lot of this stuff is people are understanding that Trump is not for
5:43them, even if they thought he was.
5:46But we can't underestimate the stakes right now.
5:50This is our country's 250th anniversary.
5:53I think it's coming at a very particular time.
5:56We're at a crossroads and this is our last chance to stop Trump.
5:59We don't know what happens if the Democratic Party doesn't win back the House.
6:03And that's going to take a huge amount of effort.
6:06We are behind and will be behind for some time.
6:09We have to recognize that as a party, even though we might take comfort in
6:12some of the little wins.
6:13We can't act like this is all going to go our way.
6:16They're going to try dirty tricks.
6:17They're going to try to nationalize the election.
6:19Trump is going to try to stay for a third term.
6:21I'm running because we don't have enough time.
6:23We don't have another. We don't we can't afford to see what happens.
6:27We have to take it into our own hands and people have to step up
6:29and run. And that's what I'm trying to do here in New York.
6:31Yeah, it is interesting calling it a retreat while it does feel like the Republicans
6:36are in a retreat at a retreat.
6:39And it does feel, though, like America is in retreat.
6:44And sure, Trump uses the bloviating and braggadocious language that he's done his entire life.
6:51But if you look at his casinos and you look at his companies, where did
6:55that take him? As he would say, my casinos have never been better.
6:58This is on the the precipice of the most historical thing.
7:02Bankrupt, bankrupt, bankrupt, bankrupt. And to me, what we're seeing right now.
7:06Right here, specifically in this particular moment, is really exactly what happened with his casinos
7:12and all of his businesses.
7:13He made these promises. It's total utter fraud.
7:16Everything is being destroyed, like quite literally everywhere.
7:19All of our relationships are being broken.
7:22And what's he doing on America's 250th?
7:25Well, last Friday, he registered the Trump 250 trademark so he could put his name
7:31on the flags and the monuments and the pins to make money off of it
7:37for himself. Doesn't that just kind of sum up this moment perfectly, Jack?
7:42Yeah, it really does. I like to say we're in a three part crisis, a
7:46cost crisis, a corruption crisis and a constitutional crisis.
7:49And to me, the most unifying of all of those, well, it's probably costs, but
7:54corruption is up there because this president has made upwards of $4 billion this year.
7:59His son is sitting on boards of tons of publicly traded companies.
8:02He himself has his own currency that he's issued.
8:06We need to step up and do something about this because if this becomes the
8:10new normal and the president is able to trademark America's birthday and have issue his
8:15own currency while weakening the dollar and having gold skyrocket and increasing prices on basically
8:20every commodity and input cost in our economy, we're getting screwed and he's getting rich.
8:26And I think everybody knows he's just, he tells you what you want, tells you
8:29us what we want to hear and then picks our pockets.
8:32It's a slap in the face with one hand and he's picking our pockets with
8:35the other. Out of control.
8:36We can't let this go on.
8:37Talk to us about your policies in, you know, in New York and kind of
8:43what you're running on, because, you know, I think that obviously, you know, Trump's at
8:48a record low when it comes to the presidency.
8:52And, you know, I think it's going to stay that way.
8:55But I think, you know, one of the reasons that your campaign's been taken off
8:58is that people are looking for answers and they're looking for policies that are these
9:04policies going to, are these policies going to help me?
9:06Because what other stuff is happening ain't working.
9:09So talk to us about what you're running on.
9:11Yeah. So we try to communicate policies in ways people can actually understand that make
9:18sense to them. So I go around, I've been campaigning around the district in New
9:22York 12, my hometown, for months now.
9:24And I listen to people and their concerns.
9:26One of the most important things people have told me is housing.
9:30People can't afford to pay their rent.
9:32Rents are skyrocketing here in New York 12.
9:33So we came out with our three -part housing fairness plan.
9:38One part is a standard renter's deduction.
9:40That's something that I have created and put forward.
9:43It would allow renters to deduct their rent from their federal income taxes, just like
9:47a mortgage interest payment. And people have been very, it's been very, very well received.
9:52We call it the SRD and people, I was walking down the street yesterday and
9:56a group of guys started cheering Schlossberg SRD.
9:59People love the SRD. We've got the ricochet rule, which is our plan for public
10:03safety. Why is it called the ricochet rule?
10:06Well, there are a lot of illegal firearms that get trafficked into New York 12.
10:10And crime and public safety is another top concern.
10:13People tell me when I'm out on the trail.
10:15So we're going to, we've got to plan the ricochet rule to stop the flow
10:18of illegal guns into New York 12, because those guns, 70 % of them, of
10:22the guns used in crime in New York come from five different states.
10:25So we want to put a monetary penalty on those states that export illegal firearms
10:30across the country and use that to create a task force to try to enforce
10:34gun laws here in America.
10:36Another policy I'm really proud of.
10:38It's the first policy that we came out with was, and especially in light of
10:42the attack that we saw over the weekend here in.
10:44in New York City, in this district on the Upper East Side, where I'm from,
10:48is Jack's Fast Track plan, where we want to try to fast track a doubling
10:53of funds for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program here in New York.
10:56And that program is a federal program that provides millions of dollars to houses of
11:01worship in this district and across the country to pay for security upgrades, for cameras,
11:07for security guards, for reinforced doors.
11:10And we're really proud of those policies as well.
11:12So we're focused on, again, those three crises, the cost crisis, the corruption crisis, and
11:20the constitutional crisis. And on the corruption crisis, we've got a really exciting policy that
11:26I'm not going to give away too much, but we're going to be announcing it
11:28later today, maybe tomorrow. And it has to do with Trump Tower.
11:32So I hope people will stay tuned because I'm really proud of this one.
11:36And the way you're going about fueling the campaign, I think, says a lot also.
11:41Talk to us about it because where you're taking money from, where you're not taking
11:45money from, I think people want to know that these days.
11:48Look, I think the corruption crisis is real.
11:50And it matters where your representative gets their money from.
11:54That's who they can be expected to answer to once they're elected.
11:57And unlike the opponents that I'm running against, which are taking a lot of dark
12:00money and relying on IEs and super PACs to buy them millions of dollars of
12:04TV ads, we don't do that.
12:06I took an integrity pledge upon myself to challenge the other opponents in this race
12:11to do that. They haven't done so yet.
12:13And it's, I don't take corporate PAC money.
12:15I don't take super PAC money.
12:17And I will not take money from big AI companies like Palantir and the rest.
12:21Our campaign is, our average donation, unlike the other people I'm running against, is under
12:2640 bucks. We've got 45 ,000 people who have contributed from all 50 states.
12:30And we're really proud of that because we are a people -powered campaign.
12:33It's grassroots. And it might be kind of ironic coming from me, given my family
12:39background. But I'm the outsider in this race.
12:42And the numbers tell a story of a campaign powered by real people out on
12:46the ground who just want to see change and want to see new energy and
12:49new life into the Democratic Party, because we don't need to accept what's going on
12:53here as normal. And we can't be the ones who sell out to corporations and
12:58big PACs. We need to go back to what we do best, which is representing
13:02real people and their real struggles.
13:05Jack, where can people find out more about the campaign and learn more?
13:08Oh my gosh. Well, they'll be very, very happy to visit www .jackfornewyork .com.
