1:05I want to get you on the record at the beginning.

1:08You are absolutely right. And I will tell you, for all our listeners and viewers,

1:16We have the great Dana White, the CEO of UFC, an incredible businessman, an incredible

1:23leader, and just an all -around badass.

1:27And so, by the way, that is a technical term.

1:31And so, Dana, welcome to Verdict.

1:33We're really glad to have you with us.

1:35Thank you, Senator. Thank you, Ben.

1:36Good to see you, man.

1:38You too. So I'm going to start with a big question on behalf of the

1:41senator because I know he's going to get around this.

1:43So I am his accountability partner on these New Year resolutions.

1:47One of them is to lose 30 pounds.

1:49I want to know right away, you've gone through a health transformation.

1:53What is your advice to Senator Cruz?

1:55I'll take it as well because you do a lot of very interesting things to

1:59get in shape. Well, how old are you, Senator?

2:0255. There you go. We're the same age.

2:04So basically the first thing you do is get on a keto diet.

2:10It's really easy to do, especially when you travel.

2:14Start getting into intermittent fasting, which literally clears all the brain fog you have and

2:20gives you more energy. Believe it or not, eating less gives you more energy.

2:26And then just get on a modest workout program.

2:29You know, when you travel and you stay at hotels, I always have a gym.

2:33What I would advise you to do is find a trainer that you can travel

2:37with. There's two things I don't go anywhere without, my trainer and my cold plunge.

2:42I have my cold plunge everywhere.

2:44And how big is your plane?

2:45I'm just curious, asking for a friend.

2:47Well, no. So what I do is if we go to the UFC, it goes

2:50on trucks that get there before we do.

2:54But I have all the hotels dialed in and they figure out a local cold

2:57plunge to put inside my hotel room.

3:00Senator, have you ever done a cold plunge?

3:02Have you ever done this?

3:03I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of cold.

3:06I like hot, but I'm not a big cold.

3:10So you bring a cold plunge, like literally with you?

3:13Yeah. So for UFC events, we have the cold plunge on the truck.

3:16But when I travel, like I'll be in London all next week, I'll have a

3:20cold plunge in my room all next week.

3:22Wow. And I do it every day.

3:23It's like for some people who have to get up and have coffee, that's like

3:26my coffee. And the great thing about cold plunge is - So you do it

3:29in the morning, typically? Yeah.

3:31As soon as you get up.

3:31It only takes three minutes.

3:33But when you first start doing it, it takes like 33 minutes because you stare

3:36at it for 30 minutes and you start telling yourself, it would have been over

3:40if I just would have done it already.

3:42In other words, it's a form of torture is what you're telling us.

3:44They forced us to do it back in college after training sessions, and I've never

3:49done it since college. Senator, I hate it.

3:52I just want to be very clear.

3:53I hate it. The fact, Dana, that you travel with it is insane to me.

3:56I love it. So how cold do you do?

3:58How cold do you have the water?

4:0050 degrees. You do three minutes at 50 degrees.

4:03And actually, it's a form of accomplishment.

4:06Like as soon as you finish that in the morning, you've already accomplished something that

4:10most people will not that day.

4:12But how it makes you feel the rest of the day is absolutely addicting.

4:17So what are the benefits?

4:18What does it do for you?

4:19It gets rid of the inflammation in your body.

4:21And at 55 years old, doing all the traveling you're doing, stress, this, that, and

4:26all that, it gets rid of the inflammation.

4:28And there's nothing better than after you fly somewhere, getting into a cold plunge for

4:33three minutes. It's the best.

4:34Really? So after you fly, it just reset you or what?

4:38And it gets rid of all the inflammation in your body.

4:40You know how you feel puffy?

4:41I mean, if you take your shoes off on a flight, when you land, putting

4:44your shoes back on, your shoes are tighter, everything's puffed, gets rid of all of

4:47that. And so you do keto or you're doing mostly meat, you're doing veggies too?

4:53Like what do you put in the diet?

4:55No. So in keto, what you try to do is you try to limit.

4:58The only fruit you can eat are berries, any kind of berry.

5:02But yeah, you eat meat, steaks, chicken.

5:05You can eat fish. You know, there's tons of things you can eat.

5:07You just can't have any of the sides.

5:10You stay away from all the sides.

5:11What's an average day of meals for you, like a normal day?

5:14Not eating out, nice meal at night, like, you know, VIP event type thing.

5:18It's four o 'clock here.

5:19I haven't eaten yet. So I eat, I go all day without eating, and then

5:23I'll eat third. You're intermittent fasting like a whole day.

5:25Yeah, I eat dinner at night.

5:27So is that your typical intermittent fast, is that you just skip breakfast and lunch?

5:31Yep, exactly. You know who does that also has the same schedule as Herschel Walker?

5:36Yeah, makes sense. And so when I was campaigning in Georgia with Herschel, he doesn't

5:42do lunch, doesn't do breakfast.

5:43And Herschel's in great shape, obviously one of the greatest athletes to ever live.

5:48But it's interesting, he does the skip breakfast lunch too.

5:50And here's the thing that's interesting is how it clears your mind and how much

5:57sharper you are. Brain fog is gone and it's pretty amazing.

6:02I'm telling you, I got to figure out, I'm going to try to figure out

6:05how to get you dialed in and get some people around you.

6:08Once I get you started, you will become addicted to the feeling of it and

6:13you'll rip the weight off like this.

6:15I'm going to help you accomplish this this year, Senator.

6:17Now, you've credited the biologist Gary Brekka with helping you on this.

6:22And actually, my mom, who's 91, told me this.

6:25And she wanted me to ask you, like, what Gary Brekka did with it was

6:30helpful and what you found beneficial.

6:33The thing is with me on the Gary, I'm all in on the Gary Brekka

6:36thing. So I do the stuff.

6:37So I used to be on a bunch of pills that doctors were giving me

6:40for blood pressure and a bunch of other stuff that I really didn't need to

6:44be on for years. So now all I take are supplements.

6:48How many and what do you take?

6:51So I was on a bunch of different pills every day and I felt horrible,

6:56tired, lethargic, and I had real bad sleep apnea, snoring.

7:02You know, when you go to the doctor, they tell you to put a CPAP

7:04mask on, which I could never sleep with.

7:07It never worked for me.

7:09Now I don't have any of that.

7:10I don't have sleep apnea.

7:11I don't snore anymore. And I'm off all meds, only on supplements.

7:15And I couldn't tell you right here the supplements that I'm on.

7:18But first of all, what they would do is I'm going to have I'm going

7:23to reach out to you, Senator, and I'm going to have them come to a

7:25blood test on you. And then they'll they'll go through and tell you everything that

7:30you need to be on based on your blood work.

7:32Um, and then, uh, and then once you get that and they give you a

7:38plan and he told me, if you can, if you give me 12 weeks, I'll

7:43change your whole life. It doesn't take 12 weeks.

7:46It takes like three. After like three weeks, you start feeling better and you start

7:50feeling and you start to become really addicted to it.

7:54All right. Let me ask you an intermittent fasting.

7:55When you go all day, like traditionally, if, if Senator Cruz and I like didn't

7:59eat today, I'd get that.

8:01I would say, call it brain fog.

8:03I'd get that kind of the shake saying where I need something like the idea

8:07of not eating and then having like more focus.

8:12Is there a transition period there?

8:14Because that to me seems like I'm going to have a headache.

8:16I'm going to feel terrible if I don't eat all day.

8:19Yeah. So what you need to do is hydrate.

8:20So when you don't eat, you know, I, I, I do this thing called the

8:2472 hour water fast where all you drink are water and electrolytes for 72 hours.

8:30And, um, how often do you do that?

8:33Uh, you, you do it like three times a year.

8:35I do it three times a year.

8:37And what's the advantage of doing that?

8:39First of all, your body starts to eat up all the dead cells, cancer cells.

8:45And, and, and, and literally all the things that are really bad for you, this

8:50thing, um, that's why you do it two or three times a year.

8:54Your body starts to eat up all the dead and bad cells.

8:57Now I'm not a religious person.

8:59And I would, I, you know, I don't even know if I consider myself spiritual.

9:02I don't even know how to explain any of that.

9:04But the first time I ever did the 72 hour fast, I start, when I

9:08started to get up around 65 hours, I was like, ah, this is what people

9:13talk about spiritual. You know, you start to have this really euphoric, weird feeling, but

9:18you start to get more energy and, um, just this unbelievable clarity that you get

9:25when you fast. It really is fascinating.

9:27So I've, I've done 48 hours, but I've not done 72.

9:31Okay. And did you drink a lot of water and electrolytes while you were doing

9:34it? I wasn't doing electrolytes, just water.

9:37So I'm going to, Senator, when we get done, I'm going to get you, I'm

9:41going to get you dialed in.

9:42All right. Senator, calm down.

9:44You look way too excited right now.

9:46I, I'm going to enjoy this, I think, more than he is.

9:48Are we going to get him cold plunging?

9:49We're going to get him not eating and, and electrolyte.

9:51I think this is amazing.

9:52And a blood test. Let me know.

9:55Ben, let me, let me be clear.

9:57The, the, the fasting is more likely to happen than the cold plunge.

10:00I, I still have some persuasion on the cold plunge side.

10:03Ben, let me be clear.

10:04He's going to start out doing the, you know, get, you get them on the

10:07way, you know, on the road to, to doing this and he will get into

10:12cold plunging and he will get into doing the sauna.

10:15You become, once you go in and you start to feel, especially at our age,

10:19man. When you hit 50, I mean, it's a, it's a whole nother ball game

10:24when you hit 50 years old.

10:25People used to tell me that and I used to go, ah, you know, I'll

10:29be fine. But you really do feel a lot different when you're 50 years old

10:33and then above. He's 55, I'm 56.

10:35For your work, for your workout or are you lifting?

10:37Are you doing cardio? What are you doing for your workout?

10:40Yeah. So I don't lift heavy weights anymore.

10:42I lift light weights for rep and, and for cardio, I walk on the treadmill.

10:47I mean, it's all basic, simple stuff.

10:48Nothing crazy. You don't have to get into all this crazy working out stuff at

10:5255 years old. Get in there, you know, you do a full body workout and

10:57do some cardio. I got to ask you a question.

12:11How much weight did you lose when you were on all the medications and then

12:14you clearly made a life change?

12:15Like I, about two, what was it, Senator?

12:17Two years ago, I started, I had three boys and I decided I was going

12:22to lose weight. I'm down like 80 -something pounds.

12:24And I feel like a different human being.

12:27When I started verdict, I was at 298 almost.

12:29And now I'm at like, I think 209, somewhere in there.

12:33That's incredible. Good for you.

12:34And I feel different. But when you made this switch, for me, it was, I

12:38was like, I'm afraid I'm going to, like, I don't want to not be around

12:42for my kids. That was my number one thing.

12:43And the doctor was very clear.

12:44He's like, hey, you're going to have a stroke or a heart attack.

12:47You're going to, this is going to end badly for you.

12:49You better get your, you know what, together.

12:51And if you don't, it's going to be bad.

12:52Like, was there something that triggered with you that you're like, all right, I got

12:55to get it together? What was the main thing and how much have you lost?

12:58So when I started, I was like 235, 236.

13:02I got as low as 191 at one point.

13:06But the thing with me was it was more about health.

13:09I felt terrible. And I was taking pills, these garbage pills that not only did

13:14they not do what I needed them to do, they had tons of side effects.

13:18And, you know, like I said, if you've ever had sleep apnea, I mean, and

13:24if you snore really bad, it's horrible.

13:27It's a horrible experience. I'd wake up every night choking and coughing and throwing up,

13:32too. Wow. And, you know, what I found was every time I went to a

13:37doctor, nobody could cure anything.

13:40It's always take this pill or like I did the sleep study and they put

13:44the CPAP mask on your face, right?

13:46Yep. And when I talk about Gary Brecca, it's like, you know, people like, oh,

13:51that's garbage. It's this and that.

13:53You know, I've seen this guy help so many people.

13:55So what does he do?

13:56What does he do that's helpful?

13:58Like what specific? So he goes in and does a blood test on you, a

14:03gene test. And he looks at this is what I loved about him.

14:07And this is really where he got just for the record.

14:09I used to look at this as like, you know, witch doctor stuff.

14:12I never believed in any of this stuff.

14:14And then after COVID, now I'm anti -doctor, man.

14:18And there are certain things.

14:20If I break my arm, I'm going to a doctor, right?

14:23If I want to work on my general health, definitely not talking to a doctor

14:27about that. And basically, Gary goes in, finds out what's wrong with you.

14:31And he told me, you shouldn't be on these pills.

14:34You should have never been on blood pressure.

14:36He got my sister off blood pressure medicine, too.

14:39And I had been taking that stuff for like 15, 20 years.

14:43And he gets you on these different supplements.

14:48And, you know, peptides are big right now.

14:51I'm on some peptides. And in three weeks, when you do it, this guy, I

14:56got on a keto diet, started taking the supplements, you know, regular exercise.

15:01In three weeks, I felt like a different person.

15:03And all the people that were around me started to notice the difference in me.

15:07And I wouldn't be able to run at the level I run at right now

15:10if I hadn't met Gary Brecker.

15:12So this guy completely changed my life.

15:15All right. Let's go back.

15:17That is awesome. Let's go back and just tell your story.

15:21So you grew up Massachusetts and Nevada.

15:25Right. When did you first get interested in boxing and mixed martial arts?

15:29And what was it that attracted you to it?

15:31Well, it's that thing. It's like when you're a kid, some people, you know, end

15:35up being 30 years old and not finding out what it is they want to

15:38do for the rest of their life.

15:39I was very lucky in the fact that I knew when I was a kid

15:42that I wanted to be in the fight business.

15:45What that meant at that time, I didn't know.

15:47But I knew that's what I wanted to do.

15:50So I was 19 years old.

15:52I lived in Boston and I worked at the Boston Harbor Hotel and I was

15:57a bellman there. And I'm like, I do not want to do this for the

16:00rest of my life. I literally walked out the door and quit.

16:03And there was this guy named Peter Welsh from South Boston who was like a

16:07fighting legend. And he's a guy you didn't go looking for.

16:11And I went looking for him.

16:13And I found him and I said, listen, I want to I know this sounds

16:18crazy, but I want to learn everything about the fight game from you.

16:21for you for free took me in and this guy was basically my my college

16:26professor for the next four years and so you started with boxing before mma right

16:31and uh yeah mma so mma didn't even really exist at that time while i

16:36was with him you know there was this talk about this fight that was going

16:40to happen that was no rules and it could be any style and we watched

16:44it on pay -per -view you know and it was shocking and crazy but i

16:48never i didn't get into it so uh now like when you were a kid

16:52let's say you're in junior high were you a kid that got in a lot

16:54of fights i mean was it like a rough upbringing or or how what drew

16:58you to the world of fighting that wasn't really like that my uncles at the

17:01time were really uh into boxing and and you know when the big fights were

17:06on abc wild world of sports or whatever it would be there was always this

17:10energy and buzz in the house that i became you know i fell in love

17:14with yeah and uh and and i just became a fight fan you know it's

17:19no different than how does a kid become a baseball fan or a fan of

17:23football it's just mine was fighting now did you do other sports you play football

17:27or basketball baseball nope i was always just into fighting yep okay i mean i

17:32played i played the level that your parents put you in and you you know

17:36when you're young i did play but i was never into it or or anything

17:40like that all right now now i read something online that i thought was fascinating

17:44which is you were in boston and you decided to leave boston because the the

17:50the mobster whitey bulger threatened you and and that and that's what took you to

17:54vegas you got to tell us that story because that's a wild story he didn't

17:59threaten me his guys did his guys wanted wanted money from me and uh you

18:04know that i obviously didn't know them and uh yeah so i got a call

18:08at my house one day and they're like you got till tomorrow to pay it

18:11and did you owe him money had you borrowed money or like what put you

18:15in that situation i don't even know those guys you know those aren't guys so

18:18they were just shaking you down a hundred percent a hundred percent um and they

18:23had approached me one day at at uh one of the fitness clubs and you

18:29know first thing he said to me is do you know who i am and

18:32i didn't know who he was and then as he started talking i figured out

18:35who he was um and yeah so they literally uh called me up they said

18:40you got till tomorrow to pay us i said i don't know how much was

18:43it fifteen hundred two thousand twenty five hundred bucks and that ballpark which was like

18:48twenty five thousand to me back then yes and uh now were they trying to

18:52press you to like fix fights i mean was that what was driving them or

18:56they just wanted money from you yeah i wasn't involved in any of that stuff

18:59at that time we were training fighters but um yeah i know so they called

19:04me one day and they said you got till tomorrow i said or what said

19:09are you gonna find out and i literally hung up the phone called delta and

19:13flew to vegas the next day all right did you ever see the movie the

19:17departed where jack nicholson plays whitey bulger i mean what'd you think of the as

19:21a boston guy what'd you what'd you think of the movie the portrayal well i

19:24lived there during that whole era which was yeah i mean crazy the things that

19:28i saw and the things that um whatever but i never had any interaction or

19:33involvement with those guys that i knew of anyway i you know you just you

19:37you just heard about him and things like that um but then to come to

19:43find out that you know they had this thing back that south boston was crazy

19:46at that time like you could shoot somebody i mean guys would get beat up

19:51and all this stuff and nobody would call the police you didn't call the police

19:54and uh you know come to come to find out later he was involved with

20:00you know with the fbi and if you did call he'd know you called having

20:05just come back from israel i want to paint you a picture it's midnight sirens

20:09are blaring and you have only seconds to grab your child and run now imagine

20:15you're elderly your legs don't work like they used to getting downstairs feels impossible and

20:21after all of that you end up in a bomb shelter for hours even days

20:25because you can't make the trek again this is what's happening across israel as operation

20:31epic fury continues children are being traumatized families are just exhausted and homes have been

20:38destroyed and that's why the international fellowship of christians and jews is there on the

20:43ground bringing food emergency equipment care for those children and help for the elderly and

20:50supplying the bomb shelters and medical centers for critically needed essentials if you've ever wondered

21:35fertita brothers who i guess you do from school and in vegas but at the

21:39time there wasn't much to the ufc when you were buying it tell us about

21:42how that came to pass well at the time i i was representing a couple

21:46of guys who fought in the ufc and some that wanted to and I got

21:51into a contract uh negotiation with the old owner of the UFC and then finally

21:55he flipped out during the call and said you know what there is no more

21:58money I don't even know if I have enough money to to put on the

22:01next event so I was like when we hung up the phone I was like

22:05holy shit you know this thing's going out of business so I called the Fertitta

22:10brothers and I said hey I just got off the phone with Bob Meyer which

22:15the owner I think the UFC is in trouble I think they're going out of

22:17business and I think we should buy it so I connected uh Lorenzo Fertitta and

22:21Bob Meyerowitz and they started talking and a couple months later we bought the company

22:25for two million dollars what's it and then now just to put it in perspective

22:30what's it worth it's it's in the billions it's a billion so they're happy with

22:36you right they're they're glad you called that day well it all worked out it

22:40all worked out now I call and say I need some money they're like how

22:44much you need now when you bought it I mean they had not many assets

22:50they they had the name they had an octagon I read that they'd actually sold

22:55the website UFC to to somebody else so like how did you once you buy

23:01it then you're like okay I got to build this into something that that can

23:04generate real revenue and become a I don't know if you were thinking a global

23:08business at the time but but how did you build it from from where it

23:12was to to where it is now yeah so when we bought it we bought

23:15basically those three letters in an old wooden octagon because everything else had been stripped

23:20out and sold you know the merchandise rights the the video game rights uh the

23:25uh even even the you know the DVD business became very big during our early

23:30days of the UFC we didn't even own the rights to that and just and

23:34and senator just to show you how much nobody believed in this thing lionsgate owned

23:40the rights to all that stuff and we actually went back and bought the rights

23:45from them and you know they were probably laughing at us when we left they're

23:48like ah we just these guys you know they're thinking about how that's going to

23:51look on their books over the next two years but it's it's it really is

23:54a testament to how nobody believed in this thing and nobody thought it would work

23:59that they sold us the rights back what what was the secret to building it

24:02back was it just pure sweat equity hard work what did you see in the

24:07value when you guys went to buy it and you said hey I think two

24:10million is worth it we should do this was it because you knew the fighters

24:13or did you understand the product and how to market it what was what was

24:16different from what you did compared to what the guys before were doing so the

24:20Fertinas and I started taking jujitsu together and that's how we fell in love with

24:24the sport we started to meet some of the athletes and you know these athletes

24:29were different than boxers a lot of these guys graduated college and you know if

24:33you look at Chuck Liddell right with the mohawk and the Chinese writing on it

24:37looks like an axe murderer but this guy actually graduated from Cal Poly with honors

24:42with an accounting degree you know what I mean okay I didn't I've met Chuck

24:45I didn't know that that that's very cool yeah so they all had those kind

24:49of stories and we were interested in it and said you know what if this

24:53was done the right way we put on a better live event plus I had

24:56always felt like boxing was messed up and on the decline I thought we felt

25:01like this could this could be big and I've always had this philosophy that fighting

25:06works everywhere you know what I mean and when you think about the United States

25:09we have so many sports here NBA college basketball NFL uh college football the list

25:16goes on and on and on but in a lot of these other countries they

25:19have soccer and that's it yeah so and boxing was huge in Latin America as

25:23well absolutely and listen I don't care what color you are what country you come

25:29from what language you speak we're all human beings and fighting is in our DNA

25:32we get it we like it yes we love fighting and especially if somebody one

25:37of my one of my favorite quotes that I use in politics in life is

25:41from Mike Tyson everyone has a plan till they get punched in the face and

25:45and and that that's pretty universal I agree and and when somebody looks like you

25:49comes from where you come from you know people rally around them when they're looked

25:54at as the best in the world and the fight game now now you said

25:58that you thought boxing was messed up how how so what what was messed up

26:02about boxing a lot of things were messed up well let's let's go to Senator

26:07John McCain so Senator John McCain um was the one that got the UFC basically

26:12shut down and taken off cable and I didn't know that oh yeah oh yeah

26:17Senator John McCain went after the UFC hard huh and you know he was a

26:20big fight fan so what was happening at the time is that was he doing

26:25it to help boxing was that his no no no he was doing what he

26:29said was the old owners were running from regulation they weren't being regulated by the

26:33athletic commissions which uh you know obviously he didn't like so uh he went after

26:39him and and we did the exact opposite when we bought the company we ran

26:42toward regulation and before Senator McCain had passed you know he he had complimented us

26:49on what we had done with the sport how we cleaned it up and you

26:51know he was actually uh he was on our side huh okay so so you

26:58you you acquire the UFC what what is the what are the biggest steps to

27:04making it succeed is it making the live events really fun is it TV rights

27:08is it uh recruiting new fighters I mean you got to do all that but

27:12what what were the biggest things that mattered that's it all of the above exactly

27:16what you just said first and foremost go out and find the best up -and

27:20-coming talent people that you think could be world champs or or or at least

27:24top five fighters in the world you have to go out and get a television

27:27deal think about this this thing was in such a bad place it wasn't allowed

27:31on pay -per -view you as a grown adult didn't have the right to buy

27:34porn was on pay -per -view but the ufc was not allowed and our goal

27:39was to get it onto free television which everybody thought was impossible at the time

27:44plus when you think about the united states back then um you know all the

27:50people that grew up in our era grew up in that john wayne era right

27:54where john wayne would hit a guy yeah he fall down you didn't jump on

27:57top of them and start you know beating the shit out of them get up

28:02you would stand them back up and hit them again right so even his own

28:05son in big jake yeah the whole ground game thing was how how we had

28:09to uh educate people on and how exciting it could be and um and then

28:15i went outside to be clear ufc has like what was one of y 'all's

28:18biggest pay -per -view i remember like looking at the data one time several years

28:23ago you guys had some of the biggest pay -per -view events like ever period

28:27yeah yeah we did and i'll think about this it took us a long time

28:31to get into new york and uh you know we were being blocked by sheldon

28:36silver in new york who was in with the uh with the union keeping us

28:42out of new york because of the vertidas we are eight of the top 10

28:46all -time gates at madison square garden now in the next two years we'll be

28:5110 of the top 10 all -time gates because we go there every november with

28:55a big fight and we break you know last year's record yeah um and you

29:01know you were talking about looking for for great fighters what makes a great fighter

29:05what sets someone apart who's great versus someone who's just good well first of all

29:10you you have to have the talent are you talented enough um to get there

29:14and our matchup makers are are are great at finding new talent we actually have

29:19a show based on it's called the contender series that we do every year and

29:23it is all the best reality tv if people haven't watched it it's amazing it's

29:27like i i i watch it and you get to you feel like you get

29:30to know the guys you feel like you get to know their story you feel

29:33like you're rooting for them you pick your favorite horse in essence by the middle

29:36of the season that's the ultimate fighter yeah that's the ultimate fighter that's what actually

29:41launched us and and got us onto television and started to build the business the

29:45contender series we do once a year we sign the best unsigned fighters in the

29:50world they show up one night and they fight right there i don't care what

29:54your record is what you've done in the past what are you going to show

29:57us right here right now tonight and it's the greatest fight show on television it

30:02really is um so did you have a view of of best boxer ever do

30:08you look at someone and say all right he was the greatest yeah i mean

30:12well i mean we just we literally just had this debate a couple weeks ago

30:16you know and uh ali is my all -time favorite for for many other reasons

30:21not just boxing you know what that guy i never did i never did this

31:05expert i have no idea but uh that's a good answer it would be a

31:11great one it's it's hard to talk about that kind of stuff too because i'm

31:14a fan of both guys yeah and both were so different and both brought something

31:18different to the sport um i mean when you think about and senator cruz we're

31:23the same age that tyson era was unbelievable i mean everybody was in the boxing

31:29because of mike tyson it was incredible well he hit so hard and so fast

31:33i mean you'd have you'd have matches over in the in the first round because

31:38he'd just knock everyone out i mean it was it was i'd never seen anything

31:43like it it's true so ali brought something different during his era and tyson brought

31:48something different but the boxing is where it is today because both of them existed

31:53and were in the sport there's no doubt about it all right same question about

31:57mma best mma fighter ever john jones really okay yeah why yeah why that's a

32:04good well one of the things that happened in boxing is that you had all

32:09these different sanctioning organizations and all anybody and they all had different champions and different

32:13guys and all anybody wanted to do was stay undefeated so they would fight lesser

32:19competition to make sure that they got up to 25 and 0 and you know

32:22um and mma you go through the gauntlet you fight the best of the best

32:28all the way to the top so if you end up with it with a

32:31long career and you are still undefeated you are the greatest of all time and

32:36that is john jones and many other reasons what about if if john jones is

32:41in the ring with ali who wins That fight, that's kind of, I'm asking the

32:45question. Okay, because it's the same question.

32:48You remember the Rocky movie where Rocky fights Hulk Hogan and the wrestler versus the

32:53boxer? John Jones. John Jones would get inside, he'd grab him, and he would rip

33:00him apart, yes. Have you ever seen a pro athlete, not in your business, that

33:05you wish you could have taken them and turned them into a UFC fighter?

33:09If you had to pick a celebrity athlete, any sport, I don't care if it's

33:14the Olympics, but there's got to be talent, Dana, that you look at and you're

33:17like, that guy should have done this and he would have been a beast.

33:20Who would that be? Yeah, absolutely.

33:22I mean, if you look at a lot of these guys that play, not just

33:25in the NFL, but college football too, when you look at how big and explosive

33:30and powerful these guys are, had they been training in mixed martial arts their whole

33:34life, they would be unbelievable.

33:37And you know who's a big fan and always said he wanted to fight.

33:40Imagine if he trained when he was young as Shaq.

33:42I mean, as big and as powerful as Shaq was and, you know.

33:47I met Shaq when I was at the USC fight with you in Miami and

33:50it was, he is a huge man.

33:52I mean, he's just a mountain of a man.

33:54Massive. And one of my all -time favorite killers, you know, the mentality, the talent

34:00and all that stuff. It would have been interesting to see if Michael Jordan, you

34:03know, was a, trained in MMA his whole life.

34:07Yeah, he certainly had an unbelievable heart of competition.

34:12I mean, you knew at the end of every game he'd have the ball and

34:14he'd be triple teamed and it wouldn't matter.

34:16He was going to score and he was going to win.

34:18So true. And he had that killer mindset and he was probably the most clutch

34:22athlete of all time. Dave, there's a lot of people that listen to this show.

34:26They may not actually have known you from UFC.

34:29They may know you from seeing you next to Donald Trump.

34:32Talk about how you guys became friends.

34:35Was it because you both were in this reality TV world and exploded that you

34:40both understood entertainment? Was that how you guys originally kind of connected?

34:44Was it, you know, he's the apprentice guy, TV, you're doing UFC TV?

34:47And then how did you guys become friends?

34:49It's clear that y 'all are friends when you see each other together.

34:51It's not just, hey, come to my event.

34:54Like, you guys obviously really know each other, like each other.

34:57Yeah. No, it's not any of that at all.

34:59He's a big fight fan.

35:00He's been a fight fan since he was young.

35:03All of his, you know, the big fights were at his casinos.

35:08And he and I met when we did the first fight at the Taj Mahal.

35:12He had us come. Think about this.

35:13The UFC wasn't allowed on pay -per -view.

35:16No arenas wanted us. No venues wanted our events.

35:19He actually had us at the Trump Taj Mahal, showed up for the first fight

35:24of the night, and stayed till the end, both times that we went to the

35:27Taj. And when you think about the Trump brand was here, UFC brand was here.

35:31But he got it. He liked it.

35:32And then literally everything good that ever happened to me in my career after that,

35:39he was always the first one to call or reach out in some way.

35:42And he was just always a really, really good guy.

35:46And then he reached out and asked me to speak at the Republican convention for

35:49him. And everybody told me not to do it.

35:53Not to do it. Don't do it.

35:54Don't do it. Don't get into politics, number one.

35:57And number two, he's never going to win.

35:59And the guy's been a great friend to me.

36:01So I said, there's no way I'm not going to do it for him.

36:03I really like this guy.

36:05And yes, he and I are very close friends.

36:07And I love the guy.

36:09Senator and I were both there for that speech.

36:11What was the biggest shock for you and the reaction from the public?

36:14Was it the animosity because you went there and because you spoke?

36:17What was the biggest surprise from doing that speech at the convention?

36:20I never get any negativity from it ever.

36:23It's the exact opposite. When I'm out in the streets and I go places, people

36:27always come up to me and say, thanks for, thanks for, I've never, ever had

36:31one person walk up to me or yell or say something to me, anything about

36:36Trump. And here's the thing.

36:37When I do speak, you don't ever hear me talk negatively about the other side.

36:42I'll tell you why everything they say about this guy is a lie.

36:47And he's not what they say he is.

36:50He's actually a good man who loves this country, cares about people.

36:54And, you know, I just talk about who he is as a person.

36:58Yeah. All right. At UFC, you hired Joe Rogan.

37:02When you hired him and he was just getting started, did you, did you have

37:08any inkling of, of what a, a major figure, what, what a really historic figure

37:13for free speech he would become?

37:14Did you see that early on?

37:16No. What I saw, I was getting into that when we were talking earlier about

37:20the ground game. So when people didn't understand the ground game, the greatest thing I

37:25did was bring Joe Rogan in.

37:26And he started walking people through what was happening while it was actually happening so

37:31that you would understand it.

37:33And when we grew up, your parents would put you in karate or taekwondo or

37:37something like that. Yeah. I did four years of judo.

37:40There you go. This is the martial art now that men, women, and children are

37:44taking all over the world.

37:46And then Joe, I remember when Joe told me, he said, Hey, listen, I started

37:50a podcast. Would you come on my podcast?

37:52I was like, what the hell is a podcast?

37:54He's like, well, it's like radio, but it's on the internet.

37:57Sounds like Lindsey Grand Center when you had Lindsey Grand on that first time.

37:59What the hell is a podcast?

38:00Yeah. I said, wow. You got to do it with the accent.

38:06So Lindsey was the very first guest ever on this podcast.

38:10And we were meeting. a basement studio in DC and we had just burst on

38:16and created the podcast and it skyrocketed to the number one ranked podcast in the

38:20world and so I asked Lindsay to come on and he comes down to the

38:23basement and and his line he goes what in the hell is a podcast and

38:30we had this this shag carpet from the 70s and and these same big old

38:36mics and Lindsay looked around and we were still number one at the time and

38:40he goes you're number one who the hell is number two some guy in a

38:44van by the river that's funny all right I didn't get it and and Rogan

38:53was definitely uh very insightful you know in in starting his podcast and and then

39:00it just absolutely blew up and and he became you know the biggest thing in

39:05the world so why do you think he's so good at the podcast business he's

39:09really good at he's really good at uh first of all he talks about a

39:14lot of interesting things he's very smart obviously and uh he's great at speaking to

39:19people he he he's a he's a good listener asks great questions and uh is

39:25always talking about interesting stuff with interesting people and he he tried so hard not

39:30to get into politics he tried so hard not to get into politics everyone that

39:35tries to do that that I know always fails but that's probably why I know

39:37them at that point all right here's an here's another Rogan question so so Rogan

39:42had been a Bernie Sanders supporter yeah then he became a Trump supporter he's now

39:47criticizing Trump on some fronts what's your sense of sort of where where his politics

39:52falls well he was very liberal I mean he was very liberal and then when

39:57the world started to lose its mind I mean if you're not a little right

40:03uh you're not right uh so I think that you know a lot of these

40:11guys who were who were liberal at one point including me I was too um

40:16so what changed your views common sense common sense uh and a lot of the

40:22other nutty stuff that was going on yeah yeah listen taxes are never going to

40:28go away uh that's always going to be a thing but you know uh when

40:35I talked to Joe about having Trump on the podcast his big thing was and

40:40and I was the one pushing the president to do these podcasts yep so I

40:45brought the milk boys on Air Force One at the end of his uh at

40:49the end of his his first term and you know there's that uh conference room

40:55in the back and we were in the conference room and then finally he called

40:58us up to his office and when I brought the milk boys into his office

41:01I could tell by the look on his face because he was like what what

41:05the hell are you are you doing right because I called Jared Kushner and I

41:09said Jared I want to bring these kids to milk boys you know because he

41:14was picking me up in Vegas and we are flying to Arizona I said I

41:17want to bring these kids with us and he said yeah I'm not asking him

41:20that you are so I I end up asking him we do it and to

41:25to the president's credit he gets done with this rally in Arizona and he sees

41:30this kid Steve who is you know a very famous kid you know in the

41:34influencer world and he was on the plane with us and and the president and

41:38he called them up on stage and he Steve started doing the YMCA thing the

41:42crowd erupted and after that the president agreed to do their podcast he did the

41:48milk boy podcast and the thing went to something crazy like 10 million views in

41:53four hours and YouTube pulled it down and that's when all hell broke loose and

41:58then the president was all in on podcasts and and the reason I love the

42:03president doing these kids podcasts that an hour two hours or the Joe Rogan three

42:08-hour podcast yeah is because he is a real guy a guy's guy who can

42:12sit there and talk so Joe said I'll I'll do it but I'm gonna invite

42:19Kamala Harris to do it too I'm good I'm gonna invite both yeah she can't

42:24do a three -hour podcast no no she she cannot so Trump shows up they

42:31go three a change right he's late for his next rally and it's incredible so

42:37they reach out to Harris's team and they said well here's what you're gonna do

42:41you're gonna have to fly to LA we'll give you 20 minutes and we need

42:45to know all the questions ahead of time and Joe's like that is not what

42:48I do yeah have you ever watched my podcast you would know that's not gonna

42:51fly yep and then now now everybody gets the podcast thing I want to be

44:08Is we, as we get close to wrapping things up here, I always love asking

44:12people, especially right around your age, when you've done, you've worked really hard, you did

44:16something incredible. Listen, Skippy, we don't need any of these lines about your age.

44:21You know, one of these days you'll hit puberty and you'll get a little wisdom

44:25like Dana and me. That's the biggest rip on the 44 -year -old right now.

44:29I feel very good about it.

44:31I feel great about it.

44:32But when you, there's a certain point where you look, you're like, all right, I

44:35worked hard. I put my head down.

44:36I got a lot done.

44:38And then there's like, all right, what's next?

44:41Do you have contentment? What do you want the next 10 years to be of

44:44your career, your legacy? What is it?

44:47I mean, now you're at the point where you can kind of pick and choose

44:49what you do. You built this brand, but what is it that makes you wake

44:52up every day and what excites you?

44:54Yeah. I mean, the level that we've built this company and what we've done with

44:59combat sports globally still fires me up.

45:02Now we're getting into boxing.

45:04You know, we're adding on to the Ali Act, which I know you know about

45:07Senator. And you know, we're going to, we're going to, we're going to build boxing

45:12into a massive business again globally.

45:15So, you know, I still have goals for the UFC.

45:18I have goals for boxing and other things that I'm into.

45:22Beyond that, I don't know.

45:24I mean, I'm, I got three great kids.

45:26You know, I think about legacy.

45:27My legacy is my kids and their kids.

45:30And, you know, I don't think much about, I love what I do.

45:33It's what gets me up every day.

45:35And I'm still just as passionate now as I was about it 25 years ago.

45:40So I don't know. I don't know the answer to that question.

45:43Just going to get up and keep grinding.

45:47Movies. I'm a, big movie buff for a, a boxing aficionado.

45:55What's the best Rocky movie?

45:57Rocky three, Rocky three. All right.

46:00Clubber Lang. Yeah. Yep. Rocky three.

46:03I love it. Me and the president argue about this all the time.

46:05What's his one Rocky one.

46:08What's the logic behind his, what's his argument?

46:11What's yours? And I might be Rocky two.

46:13So that's interesting. That's awesome.

46:16And I'll tell you something else about Rocky.

46:18It's the only fight movie other than, uh, like raging bull, which is a true

46:22story. And you know, that I actually really like like a fictional boxing movie fight

46:28movie that I actually like.

46:29And we can actually debate as men.

46:32What's your favorite one, two, three, or four.

46:34Once you get past four, you lose.

46:36Yeah. Four. But four was pretty awesome too.

46:38Like, you know, Ivan Drago, if he dies, he dies.

46:43So true. So true. So why make your argument on why yours is number one

46:49and what's the president's argument on one?

46:50Well, I loved that in Rocky three, you know, he, he, he had had all

46:56this success and, and, uh, you know, then you have Clubber Lang who's hungry coming

47:00up and, and Mick is trying to avoid him cause he thinks he's going to

47:04murder Rocky. And, um, you know, I just, I loved everything.

47:07I thought Mr. T absolutely murdered that role and could not have been better in

47:13it. And, uh, I don't know.

47:15I just, that's the, that's the one out of the three that hit me the

47:18most. They're all great. One's great.

47:20Two's great. Four's great. Um, why did Trump say number one?

47:24What was his argument on number one being the best?

47:26I think because if you didn't see, you know, Rocky one happened and then all

47:32the other ones by you, you didn't see a place where actually the guy who

47:36was the hero of the movie is going to lose, uh, the fight, you know,

47:40and obviously the, the, the, the major success, the movie and Stallone had coming out

47:46of that and, and the story of Stallone and, and how he built the movie.

47:50I don't know. I guess that's it.

47:52Rocky one is great. I'm not diminishing Rocky one.

47:55I just think Rocky three is better.

47:57I gotta, I gotta say, I gotta say, I gotta say because I like winning

48:03Rocky one is pretty awesome, but, but then he loses and, and Rocky two, he

48:07comes back, he gets it done.

48:09It's three is awesome too.

48:10So I, I mean, it's a hard, but like Rocky two is when he like

48:13finishes the job and gets it done.

48:16Uh, but you know, I, I gotta say one of the things that's fun about

48:20the whole Rocky, you know, and Stallone obviously created the character and, and the, the

48:25whole Rocky saga actually think has a lot in common with president Trump, because if

48:29you look at, at Rocky Balboa, you know, he's not the, the fastest hitter.

48:35He's not the strongest hitter.

48:37He just keeps frigging going.

48:41He's like the Terminator no matter.

48:42I mean, it's nothing stops him and he just goes and goes and goes.

48:46And that's very much Donald Trump.

48:48You know, Donald Trump used to say he'd, no president has been as persecuted as

48:52he was. And I got to say a few years ago, I wasn't sure that

48:55was true. And then the indictments come and they try to bankrupt him and bankrupt

49:00his kids. And, and it is now clearly true.

49:02It's unequivocally. And, and there are very few human beings who.

49:07could have gone through what Trump went through when the Democrats were trying to do

49:11everything they could to stop his re -election.

49:13And it reminds me of Rocky Balboa that no matter how many times they hit

49:17him, he just keeps coming.

49:19The most resilient human being that I have ever met in my life.

49:23And as his friend, you know, I used to tell him when he was going

49:26through this stuff, I'd be like, what are you doing?

49:29Why don't you just, you know, and you know what he would say?

49:33Do I have a choice?

49:35You absolutely have a choice.

49:37Yes, you can stop doing this shit to yourself, but he is unstoppable, the most

49:44resilient human being I've ever met in my life.

49:48I absolutely love the guy.

49:50And yeah, nobody, when he won this last election, I mean, I don't know if

49:56anybody was happier for him than me.

49:57And I was with him the whole night, all the way through it.

50:01And it's just, I tell people this all the time.

50:04And Senator Cruz, tell me if I'm wrong.

50:08And I've actually brought people, Kid Rock brought Bill Maher to the White House, right?

50:14And even Bill Maher, who has hated this guy for 30 years, had to go

50:19on a show and say, the guy that I've hated for 30 years was not

50:22present at this dinner. Anybody who thinks they don't like Trump, I dare you to

50:27go to dinner with him for an hour.

50:29You cannot walk out of there and go, I hate that guy.

50:32It's impossible. He can be amazingly charming.

50:35He's funny as all get out.

50:37And I'll give Maher some credit too, because he was honest about that.

50:40And listen, you know, Maher is someone who I used to disagree with.

50:45I find myself agreeing with him more and more.

50:47And I feel like Bill Maher is an old school liberal that his party went

50:52crazy. And he's sitting there going, okay, how about like free speech matters and don't

50:58embrace crazy Islamists who want to kill us.

51:01And suddenly that makes him feel like a right winger.

51:04Yeah. And it's not Bill Maher is a common sense guy.

51:07Like I was saying, he's a guy who isn't afraid to stand up for common

51:11sense. And yeah, that night was actually really, really cool at the White House.

51:17He was hilarious. The president was hilarious.

51:19And think about this. Bill Maher has been pumping the Democrat agenda for, you know,

51:2530, 40, whatever, how many years.

51:27He's never been invited to the White House and never toured the White House.

51:31Wow, really? President Trump was the first one.

51:33No, are you, not one Democrat ever asked Bill Maher the White House?

51:36Nope. Wow. What a missed opportunity.

51:40Pretty crazy. And the president gave him an incredible tour after it was over.

51:44And, you know, and those two talked all night.

51:46Me and Kid Rock stayed out of their way.

51:48They talked all night. They agreed.

51:50They argued. They, this and that.

51:51And that's how it's supposed to be.

51:53Yeah. Well, and Maher is smart and he'll engage on real issues.

51:58You know, I did his show a couple of years ago and at the end

52:02when the cameras were off, I said, Bill, you know, I got to thank you

52:07for endorsing me for president.

52:09He's like, what are you talking about?

52:11And in 2016, when it was down to Trump and me running, Maher did a

52:16whole show and he said, okay, so you've got Trump and Cruz.

52:20And he said, it's a little bit like malaria or the bubonic plague.

52:24He's like, I hate them both.

52:27But he said, if you give me that choice and he pulled out a red

52:31hat that said, better Ted than dead.

52:35So he said, compared to Trump, he decided to endorse me and he'd forgotten about

52:38it. And I had a picture, a screenshot of him wearing the hat that said,

52:44better Ted than dead. And I signed it and said, you know, thanks for your

52:48visionary wisdom. And he cracked up laughing.

52:53I think he'd forgotten all about it.

52:54He is funny and he is smart.

52:56And I've been a fan of his for years.

52:59So yeah, to be there that night and see it all play out.

53:03And what's funny is, you know, the president always busts my ball because I don't

53:07wear suits, right? So I don't wear suits.

53:09And when Bill Maher walked into the Oval Office, he's got a suit on, the

53:14whole thing. He's like, there's no way I was showing up here without a suit.

53:18And he looks at me and he goes, that's definitely from the Zelensky collection.

53:26But by the way, I will say there was a funny thing I saw on

53:31Twitter, like when Zelensky showed up for one of the White House meetings again in

53:34his sweatshirt. Someone said he should have said, look, look, Mr.

53:38President, I showed up with a suit.

53:40But when I landed, some guy from the Biden administration stole my luggage.

53:45Do you remember that weird transgender cross -dresser who was in the Biden administration who

53:51was stealing suitcases at the airport?

53:54Like it was a bizarre little story.

53:56Multiple times. And caught on film.

53:58Like it was one of the odder things.

54:00All right, last question. How cool is it for our nation's 250th birthday to be

54:06doing a UFC fight at the White House on the South Lawn?

54:11Surreal, amazing. And how many people have called you for a ticket already?

54:16That's what I really want to know.

54:17It's crazy. But we're going to put on one of the greatest live events anybody

54:22has ever seen. And yeah, I'm really excited about it.
