3:16Hey guys, we are back on Normally, the show where normally takes for when the

3:20news gets weird. I'm Mary Katherine.

3:22I'm Carol Markowitz. How are you, Mary Katherine?

3:24I'm doing all right. It's springtime.

3:27Is it? We're in almost full bloom for the cherry blossoms, which is also the

3:33time that my allergies go crazy.

3:35But I prepared with two weeks of dosing on Zyrtec.

3:40So I'm okay. I feel okay.

3:41All right. I'm rooting for you.

3:43And, you know, the cherry blossoms, they look so good.

3:45Maybe a little pain, you know, is worth it.

3:48It is. The pain can be very real.

3:51It took me like 10 years of getting flu -like symptoms on this week every

3:55year before I realized, like, oh, maybe it's allergies.

3:58So here we are. Yeah.

4:00I learn. I learn. Yep.

4:02Yep. All right. Well, the TSA remains largely affected by a lack of DHS funding.

4:11And we keep getting asked, what is this all about?

4:16Now, you and I have covered what it's all about previously on the show.

4:20But let's just do it one more time.

4:22Let's just tell them again.

4:24Yeah. So what's happening is that Democrats are using their one and only minority power

4:29within the Senate to block DHS funding, which means that the TSA and the Coast

4:35Guard and a bunch of other parts of DHS do not get funding, despite the

4:38fact that we have four jihadi -inspired attacks on U .S.

4:42soil and now spring break being affected by TSA agents who, understandably, are not excited

4:49to come to work because they're not getting a paycheck.

4:51This happened to them within a year twice now that they have been hung out

4:57to dry. And though I am not always a great fan of TSA as an

5:01agency, I am a fan of people being paid for the work that they are

5:05doing. And this is an unnecessary maneuver to try to get ICE funding changes that

5:11are not really on the table as part of this at all.

5:13Right. That's the best part, actually, that there's nothing really that they're pushing for that

5:19can happen here because the ICE funding is already over, as you have previously told

5:25us. It was in the big, beautiful bill.

5:28And so it's it's not up for debate.

5:31It's happening. It's happened. It's already done.

5:34The timeline on this is it starts around January, where ICE is getting into clashes

5:39in Minnesota and Democrats decide to try to punish the policies that they don't like

5:46by not approving DHS funding.

5:49We have a short shutdown in the beginning of February, end of January, and then

5:56they temporarily fix it by having a two week funding extension for DHS only.

6:02Then the funding lapses and Congress cannot reach a deal.

6:07Democrats are completely pushing something again that does not is not up for debate, cannot

6:12happen. And ICE funding. Bye bye.

6:14It's gone. It has left the building.

6:16And so they continue to target DHS and only DHS and TSA are affected by

6:24this particular shutdown while the rest of the government remains open.

6:28Yeah. And it's important to understand that this is a proactive decision.

6:32The party making the decision to do this is the Democrats in the Senate because

6:38they could vote to fund this at any time.

6:42And they just keep saying no over and over again.

6:45They are they are filibustering this.

6:47This is something that Republicans and Trump should be repeating ad nauseum on airwaves, on

6:53X, from the Oval Office.

6:56And as usual, the messaging is muddy.

6:59Yeah. And the media is not going to help you with it.

7:03Sure aren't. Yeah. Trump, for his part, has decided to say, hey, OK, we've got

7:08problems with TSA. Hey, people are standing in these long lines being told to get

7:12to the airport for four and six hours before their flight, especially somewhere like Atlanta.

7:17He says, OK, well, let's send ICE to the airports.

7:21And that actually can help because ICE can do force protection and deal with entryways

7:27and doors and other protection that happens around TSA.

7:30So more of those TSA agents who are at work can be used to screen.

7:34Right. There's some irony in this, right?

7:38Democrats are like, we're not going to fund the TSA and we're not going to

7:43do that because we don't want ICE to be funded.

7:45And Trump is like, hey, here's ICE for you in the airports.

7:49I want to also add a shout out to our kind of brother podcast, Clay

7:55and Buck. You know, we're on their podcast network.

7:58This seems to have been an idea planted by one of their listeners.

8:02A woman calls in and says, hey, Donald Trump should send ICE to the airports.

8:08And Donald Trump is listening and he's like, yeah, let's send ICE to the airports.

8:12He ends up sending I think the woman's name was Linda, a nice MAGA hat

8:15signed with like what a great idea she had.

8:18And here we are because you could just do things, says Donald Trump.

8:21You could just do things.

8:23And in one place, Atlanta, which has been greatly affected by this because it is

8:26a huge high traffic airport.

8:28Yeah, we we have this update from, of all places, CNN, which seems to suggest

8:33that right after ICE was deployed, which they note in the Chiron, things got better.

8:39Funny, funny that. Well, there may be a celebration here at the airport before it's

8:44all said and done, especially for the folks who've been working nonstop extra shifts.

8:48If you look right here, you can see this is the main checkpoint.

8:52Almost no lines, no waiting, Sarah.

8:54And it's unbelievable at this point.

8:56This morning started briskly with a lot of people showing up here at the airport.

9:01Lines were long. People were waiting about an hour.

9:03But when that rush hour went away pretty quickly this morning, we ended up with

9:07this. And there seems to be more lines open than normal right now with the

9:12TSA workers here breezing people through.

9:15In fact, a lot of folks have been showing up shocked at how short the

9:18lines are. Take a listen to some of the folks we talked to this morning.

9:23I don't see how extra security could be bad, you know.

9:28I mean, they're going to help out and, you know, make things move a little

9:32faster. But whether they're doing that or not, we don't know.

9:35But extra security is always good to me.

9:38I mean, you think it's not going to be that bad.

9:40But then you get here and, you know, you think, oh, man, it's it really

9:45is as bad as they say it is.

9:47Yeah, I mean, people like security.

9:49Who knew? By the way, that is like that's a normal people sentiment, if I've

9:53ever heard one, where the reporter's like, what do you think?

9:55And he's like, well, I don't know.

9:56Seems fine. By the way, the reporter there, who I don't know if, you know,

10:02he'll he'll be reprimanded. But he went on to say that people largely said that

10:06the ICE officers were pleasant and that everyone was giving a cheer at the end

10:10of that morning shift when it seemed that the slowdowns had been largely fixed by

10:16this deployment of extra people.

10:19The ICE officers, interestingly, are not wearing masks.

10:22They are unmasked and just doing their their thing in the airport.

10:26That is interesting, partly because that's one of the things that Democrats have asked for

10:30in these negotiations, which are ongoing, sort of, although both Trump and Senate Republicans and

10:37Senate Democrats are like, I don't know if we're for any of these deals.

10:40So I don't know if it's going to change, but I do think it is

10:43important to say, once again, Trump did a thing that seems to have partially fixed

10:49the problem. Democrats at any moment could just vote.

10:53To fund these people. And it would be done.

10:56And if it were Republicans making this choice to not fund them, you would hear

11:01no end of sob stories about this.

11:04It's just not you know that they know who's to blame because they're not telling

11:07you the story frequently. That's exactly right.

11:10Also, Atlanta is a major Delta hub.

11:13And Delta announced this week that they are suspending its special congressional desk service for

11:19members of Congress until the shutdown is over.

11:22And I'm like, until the shutdown is over, why do they have a special desk?

11:26Like, I know this is not all the time.

11:28This is not, you know, a monarchy.

11:30They are not royalty. They should be waiting on those three hour lines with everybody

11:35else. And the fact that they even have this desk is unacceptable, I think.

11:39So yeah, stand in the line.

11:41Yeah. Yeah. Who are you?

11:42Why should you get a special line?

11:44I am busier than you are.

11:45I am sure about that.

11:48So yeah. Yeah. Well, I'm glad that that functionally we're solving the problem.

11:53But yeah, Republicans need to be talking about this.

11:55Yeah. Much more often. I understand there's sort of there is a sort of shutdown

12:00fatigue on this storyline because it happens fairly frequently.

12:03But in this case, over spring break, when it's having a real deleterious effect on

12:08people's lives, let's let's continue to spread.

12:10And there's the fact that these stories are coming out.

12:13People are like, should I get to the airport three or four hours early?

12:16And then they do. And then they're in the airport clogging the airports because there

12:21is no line anymore. And it's been sort of solved.

12:23We don't get live updates on that or anything.

12:25LaGuardia is not like, hey, guys, our lines are free right now.

12:29It doesn't happen that way.

12:31So I think this chaos is on purpose.

12:34It's by the Democrats to cause problems so that people pay attention to their issues.

12:40I think the American people should demand that they fund the DHS and that they

12:45fund the TSA agents who are working.

12:47And then we should really rethink whether the TSA should be a government program at

12:52all. Yeah. By the way, I just want to remind everyone, the last Democratic shutdown

12:56was for the additional subsidies for Obamacare.

13:02And you'll remember before that happened, it was like the sky is going to fall

13:06if people don't get these.

13:08They didn't get them, guys.

13:10Yeah. They have been gone since the end of December.

13:13Sky remains intact. And you may notice they're not talking about that anymore because it's

13:17not the thing getting attention at the moment.

13:19It's not the tool they're using.

13:20These are all just tools.

13:22Yeah. And sometimes, as in this case, they do hurt people.

13:26In the case of the ACA, that was mostly false.

13:30Right. In fact, mostly false.

13:33And so just keep that in mind when each of these emergency situations comes up

13:38for Democrats is that three months from now, they're not going to be talking about

13:40this because it wasn't real.

13:42And frankly, a lot of those extra subsidies were fraud and were going to people

13:45who had plenty of money to pay for their health care.

13:49One last thing. This is being pushed by Schumer in part because he was threatened

13:54with primarying, with being primaried by his own party and upstarts within it, if he

14:01gave in on this kind of thing in the future.

14:03So it's also a political thing with Schumer's ambitions.

14:07Yeah. Chuck Schumer likes you waiting on a long, long line at the airport.

14:12That should be the ad, actually, right there.

14:14I just wrote you the ad, GOP.

14:17By the way, there's a huge, there's some important races in Georgia, guys.

18:08We are back on Normally, where the city of Boston is touting their graduation rate

18:14reaching an all -time high last year.

18:16They are so proud of their record high, 81%.

18:22It's 8 percentage points behind their state average.

18:26But nevertheless, Boston is really thrilled that they're able to get, you know, 4 out

18:30of 5 of the kids in their city graduated.

18:33Hey, I mean, I'm excited for them.

18:35Isn't this good news, Carol?

18:36It's not actually, or it's not real news.

18:40They basically banned Fs. You're not allowed to fail classes anymore in Boston.

18:46They eliminated testing. They hired these insane equity grading consultants.

18:52And now they somehow got their numbers up.

18:56So, you know, our friend Guy Benson tweets, ban failing grades, eliminate testing, line the

19:01pockets of nonsense consulting, lower standards, then celebrate the success.

19:05Yes, welcome to progress, which is exactly how I feel about it.

19:09Well, and this is the pattern in all of these failing school systems.

19:13It's in my local area, of course, because once COVID hit and they realized, OK,

19:18we are messing this up and we are going to have to climb back from

19:21it. But what they did is they changed the grading systems and they changed the

19:25thresholds for what equaled proficiency in our area so that they could hide the ball

19:31about how much damage they had done.

19:33And that is a problem that repeats itself over and over again.

19:37You've got grade inflation across the U .S.

19:40The SAT, I believe, just basically admitted that they had lowered their standards and made

19:47the test easier. Right. And I would just submit that why are you sitting in

19:51a building for eight hours a day if you are not learning actual skills?

19:55It's like a half lane.

19:56Go do something else. Eventually, you need to know these things.

19:59And if you are not doing those things, perhaps you should go work a job.

20:03Like this is silly. Yeah.

20:04What are we doing here?

20:05There's a great article about this entire thing in City Journal by someone named Nitu

20:10Arnold. And Arnold writes that, you know, as these numbers have gone down, their scores

20:16have gone up. And so it continues to really make no sense.

20:21One thing Arnold writes, Boston has eased its grading policies ahead of the 21 -22

20:26school year. The district published a policy banning teachers from giving no credit grades.

20:31Instead, teachers could give students incomplete marks, which supposedly would enable equitable learning recovery.

20:38As soon as you hear the word equitable, you know that education standards are about

20:41to plummet. Yes. And this is, again, it happens everywhere.

20:46And by the way, schools that have gotten good at hiding the ball, that have

20:50practiced hiding the ball, that have practiced closing down on a hair trigger, that have

20:54practiced lowering standards, it all just is a vicious cycle.

21:00It gets worse and worse.

21:01And there's another story out of Pittsburgh this week that I wrote about for Daily

21:05Wire. Pittsburgh is hosting the draft.

21:08And the draft, the NFL draft, of course, comes with all this pomp and circumstance

21:11and crowds more than it used to.

21:14In fact, Detroit hosted it two years ago to 775 ,000 people in the city.

21:20Interestingly, they didn't need to close schools, but Pittsburgh has decided, Pittsburgh has, like, you're

21:27doing worse than Detroit, Pittsburgh.

21:28Pittsburgh has decided that it must close schools for three days while people are in

21:33town for the draft. Now, Selena Zito, you know, is a Pittsburghian.

21:38And she notes that there is exactly one school in the downtown triangle where they're

21:43going to be holding most of the draft festivities.

21:47But just in case, right?

21:48Just in case, right? Just in case, you know, because you got you got to

21:51go remote. Remote is so good for kids.

21:53You know, we learned that the statement from the district was our priority is maintaining

21:58continuity of learning while recognizing recognizing the extraordinary circumstance the city will experience during the

22:03NFL draft. Transitioning to asynchronous learning allows us to support students academically.

22:09No, it doesn't. No. Asynchronous learning is a synonym for not learning.

22:13It's a bunch of BS.

22:14That is. We know this.

22:16Yeah. And they do this all over the place because, again, districts that practiced closing

22:22close more now. Yeah. Districts that practiced being open during adversity and COVID are good

22:28at staying open and open greater than close.

22:32I don't know how more simple to make it.

22:36Well, this is the whole thing, right?

22:37It's like they figured out how to close schools whenever they want.

22:41And now they do it whenever they want.

22:44We talked about in January that Minneapolis public schools were closed for two days because

22:48of incidents around the city.

22:50That was the ice incident that happened in Minneapolis.

22:53Even if the school is not near it, even if, you know, nothing is happening

22:56in the vicinity of the school, they closed anyway for two full days.

23:00Well, and not only that, they allowed a remote option for students who felt like

23:04it for a month. Right.

23:06For a month. Yeah. You know, I would have 100 percent felt like it in

23:09high school. Oh, exactly. That's the thing.

23:12And this is one of the things I think people underestimate, you know, what happens

23:16when you break a habit.

23:17It used to be that maybe you couldn't depend on your public school to actually

23:20teach your kid much. Yeah.

23:22But you could depend on it to open its doors.

23:24Right. There was a habit.

23:26Everybody went to the school.

23:27You did the thing. And then we broke that habit just as we did going

23:30to movies or going out to restaurants or, you know, any of these things.

23:33It turned out rebuilding that was pretty hard.

23:37And here we are with Pittsburgh.

23:39By the way, you'll be interested in this, Carol, your old adage that if you

23:44say school's not necessary, like people might believe you.

23:47But you're going to be shocked to find out that chronic absenteeism is in the

23:52extreme category in Pittsburgh public schools at 30 plus percent of chronic absenteeism.

23:57Yeah. I mean, we're not going to get into the side topic of do we

24:01have to just rethink public schools completely, like because we don't have time for it

24:06on this half hour show.

24:07I mean, we already are ending the TSA in the first segment.

24:09But I'm kind of thinking we spend so much money on this and it is

24:14not effective. At one point, are we going to say that's it for public schools?

24:18They haven't worked. It's not functioning.

24:21You don't want it to function.

24:22It's not functioning because you've chosen not to make it function.

24:25And I don't know that we should be paying for it anymore.

24:28Yeah. I mean, that's the bottom line.

24:30Randy Weingarten did more damage to the reputation and the function of public schools than

24:35anyone in my lifetime. Any activist on the other side, on the other side, which

24:40is teaching children, she did the most damage of all of them.

24:46And the damage continues and children will lose out from these three days.

28:57look around them and see the world and think, is everyone going crazy?

29:05And we would just like to say...

29:06They're not alone, baby. ...as Bridget's friends and to our audience, none of us are

29:10alone. We're all trying to wade through this as normie as we can.

29:14And I appreciate Bridget's tribute to all of us.

29:19Yeah. If I may be so bold as to say, I remain sane.

29:23Absolutely. Look, this is what normie is all about.

29:26We talk to the normal person.

29:28We talk to somebody who doesn't think of themselves as a caricature of trad wife

29:32or girl boss or whatever.

29:34And that they don't spend their time thinking about, you know, how the bullet fragment

29:40worked with Charlie Kirk and how Candace has, you know, exposed the plot to murder

29:48him. That is... In her 61st part of a documentary.

29:51Right. Yeah. And all of that is to say that being online too much is

29:58not good for you. I know this, you know this, we all know this, we

30:01all probably are still online too much.

30:03But what I would say to people listening is you have to cut it down.

30:07I have to cut it down.

30:08We have to all work together to cut it down.

30:10The online world, it is real.

30:12It's not that it's not real, but your actual life, outside your door, the normal

30:17life, that's the better one.

30:19Yeah. You're a person with real friends and a real life and in touch with

30:24the real world. Bridget writes, the algorithms don't know what to do with you because

30:28you don't fit in a demographic bucket.

30:30You're not angry or chaste enough for right -wing media and you're not obedient or

30:34queer enough for left -wing media and you're too smart for whatever the hell is

30:37happening on The View. You're the woman who can hold two thoughts in her head

30:40at the same time and the world is a dumpster fire, that the world is

30:43a dumpster fire and that life is still beautiful and funny and worth showing up

30:47for and you keep showing up day after day after day.

30:50I love that idea. I frequently feel torn between these poles and like, why can't

30:56we just live in a place where you can hold the two thoughts and you

30:59are not a caricature? And I just appreciate so much that sunny view, even in

31:07the dumpster fire. Yeah. Same, same.

31:13Look, again, I think that the normal life is the better life and Bridget lays

31:18it out very nicely. By the way, I, this week, took X off of my

31:22phone so that I have to use it intentionally on my laptop.

31:27Yeah. It's better. It's better, guys.

31:29It's so much better. I do it, I do it like twice a year for

31:32about a week at a time when, when we take trips.

31:35Um, but you know, I, I've said this before, but my finger still goes to

31:38the spot on my phone.

31:40It's like, it just automatically is trying to press a button that's not there anymore.

31:44That's always really scary to notice.

31:46That's a little bit of addiction for you folks.

31:49And I, but it has been better.

31:51Like I'm not picking my phone up in the morning first thing.

31:53I find that I'm hitting that spot, but the, it's not there anymore.

31:58So I don't need to worry about it.
