2:38Today, I am blessed to have Todd Ricketts with me.

2:40He is a former RNC Finance Chairman and the co -founder of a site called

2:46Freespoke Search, which I find fascinating because this is going to allow us to see

2:52a lot more news, I hope.

2:53You've heard me talk before about sites like Breitbart that get completely pushed out of

2:59the Google search engine. You can't find it at all.

3:01So I'm excited to hear more about this.

3:03Todd, welcome to the program.

3:05Tell us about Freespoke. Well, yeah, thanks a lot, Tudor.

3:08Thanks for having me here today.

3:10And really just, you know, what you hit on just a moment ago, I feel

3:13like a few years ago when every time I would go on to Google or

3:17Bing or any of these search engines, I was getting results that didn't match what

3:21I expected. And if you scratch a little deeper, what you find out is that

3:26these search engines do have a little bit of bias and they do suppress information.

3:30And interestingly enough, like Google admits that they suppress information on climate change that is

3:36counter to the narrative, right?

3:38And so we started building a new search engine called Freespoke.

3:42And really what we did is the idea was to try to surface as much

3:48information on all these topics as best we could to give all sides of that

3:53topic. And really we've layered onto that a bit of what we call a digital

3:56news assistant, which finds sources from both sides on all these topics and lets you

4:02kind of find like that Venn diagram of the overlap, which is probably where the

4:06truth lies, you know, to be honest with you.

4:08So if I wanted to hear about, I don't know, something like, if I wanted

4:14to hear about the Ukraine war and America's involvement and I searched that, it would

4:18literally show me two different sides of that story?

4:22Yeah. What we do is we sort of label these sources, whether they'd be the

4:26left, right, middle, but then with the onset of AI, we kind of layer on

4:30our own AI trained, a large language model that is just the facts, ma 'am.

4:39That is like we designed, when I talked to the programmers, I'm like, it just

4:43has to be just the facts, ma 'am.

4:45So there's, we try to take out all the bias and lay the information out

4:48there for people so they can make up their own mind.

4:50And really at the end of the day, I have a lot of faith in

4:52Americans. If you give them the good information that they can make up their own

4:55mind and, you know, do the right things.

4:59I mean, but you make a great point.

5:00If you can make up your own mind, which is that you have to have

5:04enough information to make up your own mind.

5:06And that's something that I think we're even seeing.

5:09Last night, I was hearing that the White House is getting together and talking about

5:13talking points for the midterms.

5:15And I think there's some of us who are involved in the political world and

5:20the news world. that are saying, how do you actually get that out, though, regardless

5:25of what the numbers are that are coming out of the White House, regardless of

5:29what the news is that is coming out of the White House, you have to

5:32want to see both sides and you have to be aware that there's a place

5:35to see both sides because the media is so biased.

5:37I mean, I'll take just for example, we saw what happened with AOC in Munich,

5:43where she just fell flat on her face.

5:46And then you have the New York Times reporter who actually tweet, no shame, tweets

5:53out, she called me and she wants to clear things up.

5:56And then they do a whole article to clear things up for her.

5:59That is total bias. Yeah, no, it's definitely it's definitely out there.

6:04And then there's there's sources that come on both sides, which is when you go

6:08to Freespoke, what you'll find is that there's a lot of sources out there that

6:11you may not have heard about before that don't appear in a Google or a

6:16Bing type search that we have actively gone out and tried to tag and crawl

6:21so that we'll show up when you search in Freespoke.

6:25When you say they're not, they're sources that you don't necessarily see.

6:30Is it situations like we've seen with Breitbart where, I mean, I think it was

6:34probably almost 10 years ago now that they were completely wiped from Google.

6:39You have to actually search their name to see anything that they are publishing.

6:44Is it sources like that?

6:46Or are these sources that maybe we're not even aware, like new news sites?

6:50I would say a little bit of both.

6:52And yeah, Google acknowledges that they suppress information, which I think is really interesting if

6:58you just start there. But also in Google, they have like this kind of the

7:02ranking that they do, you know, internally.

7:05They have ads that show up at the top where they, you know, say like

7:08the New York Times can buy that space at the top of those searches.

7:11And so they're just a different business model than we are.

7:14What we're really trying to do is find all the sources and compile that information

7:19and present it in a way that people can sort through it themselves.

7:22This is a big project to undertake to help people get to the truth.

7:27What made you say, I want to take this on?

7:31You know, really, it was just my own experience of how I was interacting with

7:35the internet. And I feel like the promise of the internet is to help educate

7:39people, not be led in a direction or like listen to the narrative from a

7:44left -leaning tech company. And I mean, and it goes a little bit deeper than

7:47that. These companies are just run by people in California who are a little bit

7:52left -leaning. And so the guys that design the index are a little left -leaning.

7:57And then you put a crawler on top of that that's a little bit left

7:59-leaning. And then, you know, you have this display that's a little bit left -leaning.

8:03And so you kind of get this double whammy of bias in your searches.

8:07And at Freespoke, we just wanted to give the best information possible without the responses.

8:12I do love it because I, being someone who is constantly searching the news and

8:18searching for what we're going to talk about on the podcast, what we're going to

8:21talk about on TV, I find myself going through multiple different search engines when I

8:27know that there is a topic that I'm not getting enough information about.

8:31And I'm sure I'm not alone.

8:32I mean, you're obviously saying the same thing.

8:34I love the idea that I could go one place and have it all brought

8:38to me and kind of as like a buffet of news.

8:42Yeah. Well, and on top of that, one of the things we do is we

8:45do, we do a crawl and transcribe podcasts because what we found is so many

8:51people in the world today, they're not looking to the typical mainstream news networks for

8:56their information, but they're listening to podcasts, like Joe Rogan and so on.

9:00And that's where they're getting all their information.

9:02So we transcribe podcasts and make them searchable as well, especially if you're searching for

9:07something, like you said, on the Ukraine war.

9:09If there is a minute in a podcast where they're talking about the Ukraine war,

9:13it doesn't take you to the full hour of that podcast, but specifically to that

9:17minute of the podcast. So you can listen to just the part you want to

9:21hear about. Wow. So that's actually fascinating from the standpoint of people who are in

9:26the news business, because I think oftentimes we're trying to figure out and for the

9:31midterms too, I will say, because oftentimes we're trying to find out if you're on

9:36a podcast and that's not a podcast that we would typically listen to.

9:40If it's a left leaning or right leaning, depending on what side of the aisle

9:43that you're on, how do you know when those candidates are out there?

9:47Because we are in a time when information is currency.

9:53And if you can get the information out there first, if you can make the

9:56critique quickly and with everything that's going on, we are looking for even by name.

10:02I think that would be interesting for the midterms to be able to search the

10:06candidates by name to see where they've been.

10:09Is that something that you could do?

10:10We have an election portal too that kind of gives a rundown of all the

10:13races and the primaries. So we have that functionality as well.

10:18So we've really tried to set ourselves up in a way to help people inform

10:22themselves and come to their own conclusions and really not guide anyone towards a particular

10:27narrative. Well, it's interesting because we are trying to figure out the truth right now.

10:32Just in the last few days, we've seen this story, and I'm sure you saw

10:36this story with the Senate race out of Texas, where you had Colbert saying that

10:41he was forced to have his Tallarico interview go on the internet instead of on

10:47the air because he said that the Trump squad.

10:49administration was trying to keep Tallarico, the Senate candidate from Texas, off the air.

10:54Well, then CBS actually kind of busted Stephen Colbert and said, the truth is that

11:00we told him he had to have equal time with Jasmine Crockett and he decided

11:04to use this. But Tallarico ended up raising two and a half million dollars off

11:09of this idea that the president was keeping him off the air.

11:15This is an opportunity to really expose some of these lies and get them out

11:20there. And then I think the people who are trying to fight these fights can

11:24go to your site and find out the truth and kind of elevate that through

11:28their social media and their podcasts.

11:31Yeah, 100 percent. And you know, the media is going to be who they are

11:35and they're going to give those opportunities to candidates.

11:37But yeah, if you really want to understand the issues and understand the candidates, it's

11:41that's we've created this portal so you can kind of dig a little bit deeper

11:45to educate yourself on them.

11:46Is that within Freespoke? It is.

11:49Yeah. So how to explain how you get there?

11:52Well, if you can either download the app or go to the website.

11:56And so on the on the front page of our website, we have what I

12:01And there are those there's a link to our election portal as well.

12:04That's amazing. So, OK, you were obviously very involved with the RNC while I think

12:10it was what, 2018 to 2021?

12:12Yeah, about that. About that.

12:14Yeah. So you were involved during this time where things are, I would say a

12:21heightened level of information is out there and a heightened level of emotion is also

12:25out there. We've as I mentioned, we've just heard that the White House is looking

12:30at what the messaging should be in the midterms.

12:32We're at a moment right now where you're seeing a lot of chaos in Washington.

12:38I mean, your brother is a senator there, so he's fully aware of what's going

12:42on with the DHS funding.

12:45That seems to be the messaging for the Democrats right now.

12:48They seem to be pretty hung up on the fact that they think that they

12:52can use ICE as their messaging.

12:53But they they continue to say that the economy hasn't gotten better under the Trump

12:58administration. Give us a little idea of what you see happening in the midterms and

13:02where you think the Republican Party should stand and what their messaging should be.

13:08Yeah, I think that, you know, obviously the Republican Party is going to be pushing

13:11the message that the economy is getting better and Democrats are going to be pushing

13:14this word affordability, which I think is the new it's a new catchphrase of it's

13:19the economy stupid. Right. Remember that from back in 1992?

13:23I think like they're going to be using this word affordability as their catchphrase to

13:26say that, you know, affordability has not gotten back the way the president has promised.

13:30And and Republicans are going to try to counter that narrative with the economic data

13:34that's coming out currently. But, you know, it's it's always a tough midterm for an

13:38incumbent president. They usually lose seats.

13:41But there's a lot going on right now as far as redistricting in a few

13:46different states that might lead to a few more right leaning seats in the House.

13:51And, you know, it's it's it's really going to come down to do the people

13:57that voted for President Trump want to see his policies continued or you know, are

14:03they getting a little tired?

17:21about the economy give us that breakdown because i think the people who don't focus

17:25on the stock market every day say the stock market is for rich people and

17:29that's great for them but it's not affecting me but what is the analysis of

17:34that happening yeah i think there's a little bit of both of that the uh

17:37the stock market is that i always kind of come up with this phrase it

17:41goes a little bit like this like 50 of the people in the united states

17:44do have exposure to the stock market in the s &p 500 and 50 don't

17:49and so the stock market does track ahead of inflation so if you have exposure

17:54to the stock market you're generally doing okay and if you don't you're getting killed

17:58and i think one of the things that like the republicans will both sides really

18:02need to be sensitive to are these people who are feeling left behind and we

18:07always just have to be ensuring that everybody who is in the united states it

18:12feels like they have an opportunity to get ahead right that's and that's like the

18:15promise of america is this idea that you can always do a little better and

18:19so we have to ensure that everybody in our country whether they're you know whatever

18:23percentile or whatever their income is that they feel like they have the opportunities to

18:27get ahead and i think this election is going to you know let us know

18:30how people feel about that i do think that there is a message on the

18:34republican side that like look at all of these numbers i mean we saw that

18:37even in last week's hearings when we saw pam bondy talk about the dow and

18:42people went oh my gosh that doesn't have to do with what she should be

18:44talking about but i i understand that they may have thought going into that that

18:49was a good talking point because they're talking about the economy when you said people

18:55have to feel it we're seeing that the inflation number is now at its lowest

19:00rate since 2021 but do you actually feel that because once prices go up inflation

19:06going down doesn't necessarily take prices down with it yeah so that's i mean you

19:11have to pay close attention to what's happening and i think you know one of

19:14the things that the president did this uh last year was the the trump savings

19:17accounts which i think are a really great idea because if you give people access

19:23to the stock market and like doesn't let them start paying attention to the stock

19:26market it actually gives them a better sense of where things are and uh so

19:31i think that's actually going to be a big win for republicans yeah in this

19:34in this midterm and and really long term you know if they stay around for

19:37a long time so i the contrast of that actually let's break that down a

19:43little bit because he's bringing people into i didn't think about it that way you

19:48said that nicely that he's bringing people into the stock market and allowing them to

19:52see how this can impact their lives we had this big election in new york

19:57city last year and it was obviously mom donnie against essentially cuomo and people were

20:04saying well mom donnie is promising us all this stuff for free and and that

20:09is a very attractive now we also saw aoc on the world stage with her

20:15socialist activism messaging and it didn't necessarily play that well because it kind of exposed

20:22that she didn't have a whole lot of information beyond that we're kind of seeing

20:26that same thing in new york city right now as mom donnie comes out and

20:29he says look if we're not going to get this from the state assembly if

20:33they're not going to increase taxes on the rich then i'm going to have to

20:36increase property taxes on everybody and i think you we can be pretty confident that

20:42mom donnie knew coming out of the state assembly that that wasn't going to happen

20:46that he wasn't going to get those taxes raised so ultimately we have to question

20:50was his plan all along to just raise taxes on everybody is that a messaging

20:55point that can be expanded across the country because so many people have aligned themselves

21:00i mean the senate one of the senate candidates in michigan for example has aligned

21:04himself very closely with mom donnie if mom donnie comes out with this huge tax

21:09is that going to be a big failure for the democrat party you know i

21:12i think it will but i i think when you think in terms of mom

21:16donnie uh first of all he's a politician so of course he lied right i

21:21guess that's true of course he knew what he was saying wasn't 100 true when

21:25he was saying those things but set that aside for one second and let's just

21:29keep in mind that that message is resonating and so there's people out there who

21:33i think it really suffered through the inflation of the biden administration and uh we

21:39need to be really sensitive to those people and again like it's all about making

21:42sure that everybody feels like they have that who are they are opportunity to excel

21:45and get ahead. Do you think, I mean, we have these numbers that for our

21:52audience, maybe they don't mean that much, but we're seeing that the Bureau of Labor

21:57Statistics is recently reporting in February, they're reporting that the average weekly earnings has increased

22:031 .9 % from last January to this January.

22:06Is that significant enough for people to feel?

22:08I think it is, but let's keep in mind how much of a hit we

22:12took. Inflation was so out of control for a couple of years, and people are

22:17probably still behind where they were in 2021.

22:20And so it's going to take a little bit of time before families start feeling

22:24that, like, okay, we're back on top of things and we're not just treading water

22:27anymore. What about that combined with what we're hearing is that people will be getting

22:34back a significantly higher tax return this year?

22:38Do you think that will be enough for them to remember come November?

22:43It's hard to say. I mean, people do definitely appreciate getting a check in the

22:47mail. I being one of them, I love opening my mail.

22:50I sadly, I usually only get bills.

22:53It's people that want money from me, but I'm always happy when I get something

22:56back. So I think that will give a short term happiness, whether that has a

23:01huge impact in the election remains to be seen.

23:04Have you heard any of the buzz from your brother about how people are feeling

23:09on the ground? We know that going into the midterms, the administration felt really confident

23:14about the Senate. And I think that there's a little bit of concern over the

23:19Senate right now, as we see the numbers coming out of North Carolina.

23:22And quite honestly, as we see the numbers coming out of Texas, which is really

23:26a state that the left has said has been going blue for a long time,

23:30but we've always held strong there.

23:33We have an interesting dichotomy right now with the challenge of Wesley Hunt and Ken

23:39Paxton against John Cornyn. That's creating some confusion and some frustration on the Republican side.

23:47But in addition, you have these two candidates that have pretty high numbers in Texas.

23:52What's the buzz on the ground?

23:54Are people concerned about the Senate now?

23:56Or do you feel like it's still the House is the big concern for the

23:59midterms? You know, I think that anytime you're going into a midterm with an incumbent

24:03president, you're looking at this idea that you're probably going to lose a couple of

24:07seats and the margins are just razor thin.

24:11And so I think that, like, you know, the election is going to be, you

24:14know, kind of a referendum on President Trump and how people are feeling in that

24:18moment. But all of these things are tough.

24:20And every two years we hear it's the most important election we've ever had, or

24:23every four years we hear it's the most important.

24:25And I feel like that's generally true.

24:26Like each time it happens, we get into these critical elections and, you know, it's

24:32hard to say which way it's going to go.

27:39Not combinable. Terms apply. We kept hearing so much about Trump on the world stage,

27:48and we kept hearing people saying he's spending too much time on foreign policy and

27:53not enough time on policies at home.

27:55I think the numbers that we just talked about would show that there is still

27:59quite a big focus on the economy, what's happening at home, the kitchen table issues,

28:04getting gas prices down. We don't hear about eggs anymore.

28:07But we did have last year the same Munich Security Conference J .D.

28:13Vance spoke, and there was some criticism of his speech.

28:16The world leader said it felt too harsh.

28:19It felt too direct. Marco Rubio spoke this past week, and he actually commented on

28:25that. He said, sometimes we are direct, and you have to understand why we're direct.

28:29But he's been overwhelmingly praised as bringing everybody kind of back together and talking about

28:34our overwhelming shared culture and heritage and that we want to have a future together

28:39and that we want to protect our borders and that we shouldn't be silly about

28:43allowing fear and guilt to shame us into having open borders and putting our national

28:49security at risk. Do you think that Marco Rubio's message is going to be one

28:55that is going to be a hard message for the Democrats to go against when

28:59it looks like the he really brought world leaders together?

29:03Well, you know, I don't know exactly how that's going to play out in November.

29:08But I would say that, you know, the president is definitely a disruptor, right?

29:12And the in a good way that the world order was kind of gotten into

29:17this stagnant place. And, you know, President Trump came along and said, you know, we

29:21really need to shake the world out of its out of its sort of like

29:25slumber here. And really, it's it does play into domestic politics, too, because, you know,

29:31we we have been the leader of the world since World War Two.

29:35The President Trump is on a question saying, like, OK, how long do we have

29:39to be that leader on trade and with our military power?

29:43And at what point do our European allies come along with us?

29:46And so I think as we go forward in the world, you know, obviously, we're

29:49going to continue to be that leader.

29:50But we really need our European allies to kind of come, like, as I say,

29:54come along with us. And part of that is going to be, you know, having

29:57them address their own bureaucracy and red tape that they've created over the last 80

30:01years that that has kind of put them into this this kind of like zombie

30:07like state economically and militarily.

30:10You know, it's interesting because there was a lot of discussion that felt like there

30:15is a real the pull in the United States between the left and the right.

30:19I think we get a lot of criticism that we have a lot of division.

30:23But Europe and the European Union, it seems as though they have that same pull

30:28going on. I mean, you saw Brexit.

30:30You see now the UK seems to be trying to pull back the conservative side

30:35and they they they vacillate between liberal and conservative.

30:39You see Italy. You see even what's happening in Latin America, too, seems to be

30:45going much more conservative. But one of the things that I wanted to ask you

30:49about, we saw one of these world leaders or one of these people who was

30:55a politician speaking on behalf of world leaders at Munich in Munich, and he commented

31:00on the EU. He said, I feel like the EU should have a president over

31:05them so that we have a collective voice and that we go to the table

31:10and we can be as powerful or more powerful than the United States.

31:14I thought that was a really interesting statement, especially considering I think that they are

31:20in a similar way pulling from left and right.

31:24Not all of them are on the same page from the EU standpoint.

31:28But do you see that sometime in the future that Europe could be kind of

31:31a consolidated force against the rest of the world?

31:33I mean, they've they've tried it from an economic point of view.

31:37And really, the issue that I think is going on, I mean, it's happening here

31:40in the United States, but it's but it's a bigger issue in Europe and in

31:44Canada, because what we've seen over the last 20 to 25 years is that the

31:48U .S. has the economy has grown significantly.

31:52And whereas 25 years ago, the standard of living in Europe and in Canada was

31:55roughly the same as the United States.

31:58As we've gone through this economic boom over the last 25 years, those places have

32:02stagnated. And now that that division has has become much larger.

32:07And really, Europe has a lot of homework to do.

32:10They need to decide if they're going to, you know, unwind some of the bureaucracies

32:15that they've created and let their economy start growing again or continue to fall behind.

32:21It's interesting, as we watched this past week, what was happening at that conference, I

32:27was feeling like we need to be able to have a better understanding of what's

32:32happening country by country. So I want to go back to FreeSpoke for a minute,

32:36because obviously, we want to get the national news and have that perspective back and

32:42forth. Are we able to do that on an international basis on the site as

32:46well? For sure. For sure.

32:47Yeah, I really encourage you to kind of go and look and see what our

32:52search engine will find on these different places.

32:54And I think you're going to find like a really balanced view, kind of highlighting

32:59the different sides of those arguments, not just in the United States, but in Europe

33:03and around the world. I love it.

33:05It's the perfect time to talk about this because so many people who are listening

33:08to this podcast are saying, how do I intelligently talk to the other side right

33:13now? And I think that's one of the benefits of what you're doing is that

33:17you are showing us both sides of the argument, which you should know to be

33:22able to talk to the other side, because it's better to have an understanding of

33:25what they're thinking. If you want to come around them, come beside them, try to

33:30even convert their thinking. You have to kind of know what they're thinking and what

33:34the alternative version is. So I encourage everyone to download the app.
