3:43It's normal, it takes for when the news gets weird.

3:45It's still weird. I'm Mary Catherine.

3:46It remains weird. I am Carol Marcus.

3:50Yeah, I mean, you know, we recorded an extra special episode of Normally for what

3:55happened at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, and I feel like we still have a

3:59whole topic to talk about today about it.

4:02Yeah, I mean, these news cycles shift quickly, partly because I think a lot of

4:11people in the press want to get off the subject of the idea of any

4:14Republican being a victim of anything.

4:17That's right. Look, I noticed this, the first time I noticed this, I'd be interested

4:22in your take too, was after the Gabby Gifford shooting in 2011.

4:26I was covering that event as it happened.

4:29Like, I happened to be the person on staff at the Daily Caller who saw

4:33it happen live on TV and started jumping to gather information as best I could.

4:38And I remember watching the narrative turn and getting sick to my stomach immediately because

4:44people just so much, so many people in the press went full force into this

4:50is the right's fault. This is the right's fault for speaking, for saying the wrong

4:55things. This is Sarah Palin's fault for having this map.

4:58And I thought, there's no, absolutely no indication that any of this is real, and

5:03yet it dominated the news coverage.

5:05And from that day forward, every attempt on anyone's life, any event of this sort,

5:13everyone rushes to their corner.

5:15They attempt to pin it on someone.

5:16And frankly, I want information so we know who's doing it and why, because I

5:21don't want to have collective guilt for things that are not my fault.

5:25I really don't. Yeah. Yeah.

5:28The difference I would say since then is that we've had such an uptick in

5:35this kind of thing with President Trump that it's almost impossible to not point at

5:41the left and say, you know, you're saying this stuff about him.

5:45You're calling him a pedophile, a rape, rapist, a traitor.

5:49And then the attempted alleged killer puts it in his manifesto.

5:56There is much more of a direct connection.

5:59Like Gabby Gifford's shooter had never seen Sarah Palin's map.

6:03That was like made up out of nowhere.

6:05But there's going to be evidence that the guy, you know, arrested for the attempt

6:12at the White House Correspondents' Dinner will have seen and will have heard Democrats or

6:19talking heads or etc. talking about this stuff.

6:22We talked about it in our special episode, but he didn't sound fringe.

6:26He didn't sound like a crazed Redditor.

6:29He sounded like he watches any number of mainstream sources.

6:34And if that's where the mainstream is now, like what is fringe anymore?

6:39No, I think you're right.

6:40He seemed to be a very sort of elite, learned, downwardly mobile, perhaps, person who

6:46got radicalized and was fairly lib as far as we can tell.

6:50Well, and consuming mainstream sources, as you say, and retweeting all of those in his

6:54his feeds. I mean, I think there's a pretty easy metric for like, oh, should

7:00we consider whether one side is or there's two two pretty easy metrics.

7:03One, people have attempted to kill Donald Trump so often that I forgot there was

7:09an attempt two months ago in which a man was killed at Mar -a -Lago

7:12when he was armed and stormed the facility.

7:15The president luckily was not there.

7:17The Secret Service took this guy out.

7:19He was a North Carolina guy.

7:20And yeah, that one didn't even get a news cycle.

7:24Yeah, I'm mentioning that one in something I'm writing for Fox because I think it

7:28gets so memory hold and it's so just not in our conversation at all.

7:33That guy. Another one that you mention a lot that I almost never hear elsewhere

7:37is the Iranian plot to kill Donald Trump.

7:40That was several years ago now.

7:43But that like doesn't even get a mention.

7:45That's not even included in all the assassination attempts on him.

7:49And that would bring us what, to like five?

7:51So I think if there are so many that you're forgetting ones that happened, perhaps

7:56we should be looking to what is the issue with that.

7:59Yeah. And then there's the Luigi Mangione valorization.

8:04Very much that, yeah. And this is just like, these are not very many examples.

8:08Like off the top of my head, I can come up with these.

8:11That is a project of the left.

8:12I'm sorry, we have nothing to do with that.

8:15There are many academics, elite writers, people in media spaces who explicitly endorse or sympathize

8:22with political violence as a tool for change.

8:27Hassan Piker was just doing it on The New York Times on a podcast last

8:30week. And everybody giggled about it.

8:33It's not something you should giggle about.

8:36But I do think it is too often sympathized with and rationalized as a response

8:41to an extraordinary disturbance in the duly elected president who they don't like, right?

8:51And that is a bad message.

8:55And I do not appreciate people who carry that message turning around to me and

8:59saying, Well, we would never help.

9:01How dare anyone suggest that we would carry this message like you just did?

9:07I just I just listened to it.

9:09Yeah. Emma Jo Morris posted this yesterday and it really struck me.

9:14She said, sorry, guys, but it's going to take more than a building a ballroom

9:17with the White House to address the radicalization problem we have on our hands.

9:20I'm sitting in Williamsburg in Brooklyn listening to garden variety millennial yuppies who sound like

9:26ISIS. And I know exactly what she's talking about.

9:30Like we've all been there where we're listening to upper middle class people say things

9:36like someone should take Donald Trump out or worse.

9:40Really disgusting, horrible things. I can think of like people who were happy when Charlie

9:46Kirk was assassinated. People who were sad that Donald Trump was not murdered at Butler.

9:51I mean, they were saying it out loud and openly and it wasn't like something

9:57they were embarrassed by or thought other people would be horrified by.

10:01I just I you know, we talked about it again last episode also.

10:05But I I understand that the right has problems.

10:08I understand that we have our freaks and our ghouls, but it seems like we

10:14police them so much better than the left does that to the point where I

10:18don't even know that that isn't mainstream on the left anymore.

10:21I'm not sure what's fringe and what's mainstream on the left anymore.

10:25Well, as our friend Bridget Phetasy says, for the media, there is no such thing

10:28as too far left in this country.

10:30Too far right is like me.

10:32Right. So, you know, so there is there's an imbalance in how much outside media

10:38corrective the left coalition is going to get.

10:42That doesn't mean there aren't bad actors on both sides.

10:44Of course, there are. But as you and I noted, the bad actors who are,

10:48quote unquote, of the alt right get elevated by the same people who are elevating.

10:53The bad people on the left.

10:56We're trying to minimize them.

10:57And they're like, no, no, let's put them in the New York Times.

11:00No, because we want to pin them on you.

11:02So we're going to do a full feature on Nick Fuentes.

11:06You know, I have followed this stuff for a long time.

11:10I was two blocks from the congressional baseball shooting.

11:14The shooter who was explicitly lefty political, who attempted to massacre an entire softball team

11:21of Republicans. And people don't remember his name.

11:25People don't know what that date was, because if that had been a team of

11:29Democrats, that would be a national conversation.

11:32It'd likely be a national holiday on which we mark how we are committed to

11:37opposing political violence. In my neighborhood, a year after it happened, not one observance, not

11:44one concern about it. But I wrote about it at the time and got in

11:48trouble with my bosses at CNN for pointing out that the coverage of this was

11:51quite scant after two days.

11:53And there just is a genuine difference when the when the press has to wrestle

11:58with the idea that someone ideologically aligned with the left is wreaking this havoc.

12:04They do not want to do it.

12:06Right. And I think that they have to be careful because, again, we do have

12:10our own crazies on our side and they will be motivated by the open disdain

12:16for people on the right.

12:18Like that we're not people, that what happens to us doesn't matter.

12:21I think that they are being careless about this because the crazies on our side

12:27will take the lesson that violence is the answer.

12:30And, you know, I said this on Sid Rosenberg's show today and he said, oh,

12:35you know, it's not both sides.

12:36Like, no, it's not both sides.

12:38But that doesn't mean it won't become both sides.

12:40It could easily become both sides.

12:42I can think of lots of examples where we were like, if you don't stop

12:46doing this, our side's going to stop doing it.

12:48Like, you know, the interrupting public figures in restaurants and stuff like that.

12:52Guess what happened? That's what the rights started doing, too.

12:54We were like, maybe let's not have this happen so that we can all live

12:58in a society where public figures can go out to restaurants.

13:01Nope. They didn't want to live like that.

13:02Now we live like this.

13:04Well, and then we find out, of course, that some of the formerly identified as

13:09right wing violence at Unite the Right was, in fact, funded by left wing groups.

13:13And you're like, well, it's just all of this an attempt to create the fiction

13:19that only one side does this when, in fact, I can see with my eyeballs

13:23that the opposite side that tells me only one side does it is doing it

13:28all the time. Right. And then also writing about how great it is that it

13:32happens or how understandable it is as a reaction to oppression or whatever the the

13:38thing of the day is.

13:40But it's very hard for anyone in the press to argue with a straight face

13:44that they treat political violence against someone like Trump as seriously as they do the

13:50other direction. And I think, frankly, the moment that we had post Butler where there

13:54was unification about, oh, my gosh, this is horrifying.

13:57Short, though, it was. It was a pretty serious moment where we all went, oh,

14:02my gosh, like, take a deep breath.

14:03We were really spared from this terrible catastrophe.

14:06I think that helped Donald Trump electorally.

14:09And that is something that they're not going in that space regret.

14:13Yeah. Yeah. Because you could see it's not the same this time, that it's full

14:18on not the same. We have a clip of Donald Trump on CBS talking to

14:23Norah O'Donnell, and she went with this.

14:26The so -called manifesto is a stunning thing to read, Mr.

14:30President. He appears to reference a motive in it.

14:34He writes this, quote, administration officials, they are targets.

14:38And he also wrote this.

14:40I'm no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist and traitor to coat my hands

14:45with his crimes. What's your reaction?

14:47Well, I was waiting for you to read that because I knew you would, because

14:50you're horrible people, horrible people.

14:53Yeah, he did write that.

14:55I'm not a rapist. I didn't rape anybody.

14:59I'm not a pedophile. Do you think he was referring to you?

15:01Excuse me, excuse me. I'm not a pedophile.

15:04You read that crap from some sick person.

15:07I got associated with stuff that has nothing to do with me.

15:12I was totally exonerated. Your friends on the other side of the plate are the

15:19ones that were involved with, let's say, Epstein or other things.

15:23But I said to myself, you know, I'll do this interview and they'll probably I

15:28read the manifesto. You know, it's a sick person.

15:30But you should be ashamed of yourself reading that because I'm not any of those

15:36things. Mr. President, these are the gunman's words.

15:38Excuse me. You shouldn't be reading that in 60 Minutes.

15:42You're a disgrace. But go ahead.

15:43Let's finish the interview. The other thing that he wrote in the end.

15:47You're disgraceful. I have to agree.

15:48I thought that was disgraceful.

15:51I thought that was fake and ridiculous.

15:55Oh, you think he was talking about you?

15:57Like, no, you know, what do you think he was talking about?

16:00Who do you think he meant in that manifesto?

16:02And if you don't know, then you don't have the role of talking to the

16:05president and interviewing him after an incident like this.

16:08You don't have the capability to deliver what you need to deliver in that moment,

16:14which is information to the American people.

16:16The unity to the American people.

16:18You're just, you know, missing.

16:21cast for this moment. Okay.

16:23I have a hypothetical to ask.

16:25If a crazy racist right -winger had attempted to assassinate President Barack Obama, two days

16:32later, would you have President Barack Obama sitting across from you and read from the

16:36racist manifesto accusations of, well, sir, he does make the point that you were born

16:42in Kenya and that you, you know, whatever about his skin color or what have

16:45you, and just read it out to him as if there was some sort of

16:49substantive point there? Right. No, you would not.

16:52Imagine that? You wouldn't do that.

16:54And it is, it's this turn that's made very quickly to blaming the victim.

17:00And I, I don't, I don't care if it's the person I disagree with most

17:05in the world, in this country, in this country.

17:08If someone tries to silence you in the ultimate way, the ultimate attack on democracy

17:13and free speech by trying to shut you up by killing you, we're, we're standing

17:18together for at least a day or two, you and me.

17:21Yeah. It doesn't have to be forever.

17:22But if somebody takes a shot at any, any leftist, any Democrat, I'm, I'm going

17:28to be defensive of them for a few days.

17:30And by the way, I think we have been on this show when, in particular,

17:33Governor Josh Shapiro was targeted, his home targeted.

17:37And by the way, that ended up being a jihad -friendly, free Palestine, left -leaning

17:43person. Yeah. This is what I'm saying.

17:47Yeah. And we did, and we stood with him before we knew that.

17:50Yes. No, had it been, I mean, we thought it would be that, honestly, but,

17:55but had it been a right winger, we wouldn't have been like, well, you know,

17:59he has the wrong policies, so I guess it's okay.

18:02Like, it just, it's not okay.

18:03It's not okay. It's not okay.

18:06Looting's not okay. Robbing people is not okay.

18:08Murdering people is not okay.

18:09Just because you're not getting your way.

18:11Violence is not speech. Nope.

23:00the one that that they have uh going on the ballot in november to um

23:06take a cut of a billionaire's earning that is not income just wealth wealth tax

23:19tax is retroactive it starts from january 1st of this year and several billionaires left

23:25in december while posting like hey i left on december 23rd like just making sure

23:40are they leaving now the ballot measures not even we don't even have enough signatures

23:52going to cite it into law and we were like pretty sure that all of

24:07got out of there and so many multi -millionaires because they know what happens they

24:12know once they can't confiscate what they need from the billionaires they're going to come

24:16down the ladder to the other wealthy people in the state it's atrocious another leftist

24:23ridiculous proposal and you know sometimes we're like these these people deserve what they get

24:28a lot of these people who have left um are democrats and they sat by

24:34while california became ever more blue and then when it was going to hurt them

24:39they finally left um and i hope they've learned a lesson i hope they don't

24:44come to places like florida and continue to vote for the democrats who are going

24:47to be more moderate than the full -on communists they let left behind yeah the

24:51whole thing is just based on economic nonsense on this myth that the rich don't

24:58pay their fair share when in fact particularly federal income the top one percent pay

25:04a huge percentage the top 50 percent pay a huge percentage and um the the

25:10elites in this country just treat it like it doesn't exist there's another fiction that's

25:13dangerous which is that if you confiscate all this wealth you will actually be able

25:17to pay the bills of california or the federal government it's not true you can

25:20you can confiscate all day and all you'll do is end up killing wealth and

25:24wealth creation you will not actually cover your bills in california that's partly just because

25:28they're defrauding the system at every moment and we'll just defraud it more and more

25:32in response to more and more money um but this is no way to run

25:39an economy this is a giant economy and by i do enjoy the cell phone

25:43where they're like we're going to make it retroactive january 1st so you guys can't

25:47get out of this and they were like i think we'll get out of it

25:49now right and that is a rational move and by the way i would remind

25:54everybody that the federal income tax was originally supposed to be only for rich people

25:57too so yeah how'd that work out right we'll see whether that uh maintains but

26:02you know it's funny because very small percentage guys don't worry it won't grow it

26:06won't grow some people have stayed some very very wealthy people among them chamath from

26:12the all in podcast and you know he tweets about this tax all the time

26:16but he has he is staying and seeing what's going to happen i'm kind of

26:20curious what's going to happen too what how are they going to do it are

26:23they going to make so one of the questions was like a lot of these

26:27very very wealthy people their wealth is in stock of their company are they going

26:32to be forced to sell that stock in order to pay this wealth tax and

26:36the damage that that's going to do to the california economy i mean there's a

26:42reason that laughers curve you know the more you tax people the the less money

26:46you end up making for your state it remains relevant to this day is because

26:51it never works this just it never works and like like you said they have

26:56so much corruption in florida in a path sorry they have so much corruption in

27:03california that they can't know where that money is going recently we told the story

27:09on here that more people had applied for unemployment insurance in california than live in

27:15california than you more than the adults that they have in California, that kind of

27:21thing is not going to be solved by any tax.

27:24And I don't know how they're going to manage that.

27:27And I don't know how Gavin Newsom takes that message nationally.

27:32Like, hey, this state is completely not functioning.

27:35Make me your president. Well, and it's treated as radical to say, hey, before you

27:41take more money from us, could you guys make sure that you're not just giving

27:45it away to Romanians via the the unguarded unemployment insurance program we have?

27:53And it's like they're like, no, that would be a grave sin to determine whether

27:57we're doing this correctly. How could we do that?

28:01It's the Fox News watcher.

28:03It's the most reasonable request on the planet.

28:06And it is treated like radicalism.

28:08Yeah. Well, good luck with that, California.

28:11You know, we have friends in California, you and I.

28:13I root for our friend Alicia Krause probably more than anyone because she's staying and

28:19fighting. And I love that.

28:22But this is not good.

28:23She and the all in guy, I will I will donate.

28:27I will donate to their effort to fight this tax.

28:30I will. I would love for it to lose.

28:32I would love for Steve Hilton to win.

28:34That would be good. For a Republican to take the wheel, arrest the wheel from

28:40Gavin Newsom and straighten things out a little bit.

28:43I will attempt to support them in that.

28:45But it's also just another lesson, as you note.

28:49Don't put it past them, man.

28:50Like, don't assume they're not going to do crazy things, just like in Virginia.

33:16All right, we are back on Normally with an update from the New York Times

33:19on USAID. Now, you'll remember that this agency that was sort of adjacent to the

33:24State Department, what was kind of going rogue and doing its own thing for a

33:27long time, giving a bunch of federal money to NGOs that did, sometimes we're not

33:32even sure what work they do.

33:35But you'll remember that we were told that this was a huge disaster to even

33:39look at USAID funding. The New York Times puts this story up.

33:44A year after USAID's death, fired workers find few jobs and much loss.

33:50People have plowed through savings, cashed out retirement funds, and moved in with relatives.

33:54Former USAID workers estimate that less than half found full -time work.

33:58Okay, so this is a great excerpt from it, just to give you a flavor.

34:03Daniel Friedman writes, Every sentence of this article makes me want to vote for Trump

34:06again. But all those interviewed said they were still incredulous that an agency that amounted

34:12to less than 1 % of the federal budget had been so quickly obliterated and

34:15reduced to a skeletal operation within the State Department.

34:19You know, they thought they were doing all this good.

34:21They said they were still burning from President Trump's characterization of them as radical left

34:25lunatics. And then we have a quote.

34:27I'm a queer brown immigrant, said Adrian Mathuro, 55, a Navy veteran and former senior

34:32USAID advisor in global health, who was involuntarily retired last July.

34:36It's like the quote suggests that you self -identify as a radical left person.

34:45Right. We find out in it, for instance, that one woman was making $272 ,000

34:51a year at the head of an NGO.

34:54And even the New York Times must concede at times during the reporting of this

34:58article, like, it's unclear how much good these individual NGOs did on the ground, because

35:05a lot of this money went to American contractors, right?

35:08It's just funneling through various organizations.

35:11But I do find it interesting that they just that they think these are the

35:15sympathetic characters of this story.

35:19Right. And, you know, the thing is, like, a lot of people were saying, you

35:22know, don't mock these people.

35:24It's very, very hard to start over again in your 50s and plus.

35:28And these people are real people and don't make fun of them, which I completely

35:33understand. And it is hard to start over.

35:35I remember when people were being fired for, you know, automation reasons and a lot

35:41of journalists suggested learning to code.

35:44And, you know, we didn't like that very much.

35:47So I'm not making fun of these people at all.

35:51They had jobs that they thought would last forever.

35:53But those jobs were deeply unnecessary.

35:57And subsidized to an incredible degree.

35:59Completely subsidized. Do I believe if you had to make an appeal to free people

36:04and donors or the free market that that woman's job was worth $272K a year?

36:10Exactly. I don't think you'd find that deal.

36:13I don't think you'd find that deal if you didn't have taxpayers to take from

36:17to make it happen. Exactly.

36:19And, you know, look, you can feel for people in all different difficult situations.

36:24There was a unrelated to this, but there was a tweet today from an account

36:28called FinTech Frank that posted a Goldman Sachs report that 40 percent of people earning

36:33five hundred thousand plus dollars per year say that they're living paycheck to paycheck.

36:39I don't feel sorry for those people.

36:41Like, I get it. You're doing something that's making your life difficult.

36:45But I you can't feel sorry for everyone.

36:48And I the fact is that a lot of this USAID stuff was very scammy,

36:55very unnecessary. And now we're sort of seeing the results of that, that a lot

37:00of the stuff really didn't matter.

37:02Yeah. And this this happens over and over again, by the way.

37:06We were all going to die because of net neutrality.

37:08All these people were going to be kicked off Obamacare and have nothing at the

37:12end of last year of our Lord 2025.

37:14And I don't know if you haven't have you noticed all of the cries from

37:18the very real people who were on those extra Obamacare subsidies?

37:21No, because that was used for that fight in that moment.

37:25And most of those extra subsidies, as we discussed, that were established during the covid

37:30era were scammy or were for very rich people who had decided to retire early

37:35because they could get you to subsidize their health insurance.

37:38So there is not this outcry of very real victims because that pool wasn't there.

37:44We're told that these things are dire at every turn.

37:47And it doesn't mean that zero people are at a disadvantage.

37:50It just it just means that the way they trump these things up should be

37:54looked at with with a skeptical eye because it happens every time.

37:59Yeah. Scamorama. Scamorama. What was the most recent one?

38:09all this funding from all these hospices in California.

38:11And we haven't gotten one.
