2:16You know when people try a new food and suddenly it's like, okay, hold on.

2:21I got a new favorite food.

2:23That's the reaction a lot of people are having when they first try Kewpie mayo.

2:59And oftentimes in spring, we feel like it's time to clean out our houses and

3:03declutter and get rid of all the stuff that we don't need.

3:06And if you are anything like me in my house, we have a massive amount

3:11of stuff that we don't need.

3:12And we've kind of like, over the years, we haven't moved for 20 years.

3:16So over the years, we click.

3:17I see Whitney, who is with me.

3:20Her face just went like, oh my gosh, that's a nightmare.

3:22And it is actually not moving.

3:24It is a disaster. I love our house, but it just is like a place

3:29that collects crap. So I needed help with this.

3:32And we found an expert.

3:33We have Whitney English with us.

3:35She is an organization design and decluttering expert, and also a creator of incredible art.

3:40Because I was going through your Instagram page, Whitney, and I was like, I want

3:44to be you. And your house is like so inviting and lovely.

3:47And I feel like I walk in my house and it's chaos.

3:51I have four kids and I blame them, but we really are just like, there's

3:56stuff, there's stuff. Help me.

3:58Well, I can try. I think that I wrote a book about organizing because it

4:04is a battle that I also feel like I constantly fight.

4:07So I'm hesitant to step into the role of expert, but I'm happy to like

4:12talk about it and brainstorm it and, you know, give people suggestions for things that

4:17have worked for me. One of the things that I saw you saying is, like

4:21start on something small, and then you kind of feel like you've accomplished things.

4:26And I do think that that is, my problem is where I'm like, okay, now

4:32I'm going to take on this giant, we have this craft, we call it the

4:36craft closet. And it is, we just did this last weekend, but I thought it

4:41was going to take me a few hours.

4:43And then it was days of, and then it's all over the place.

4:47And there's this moment of feeling like, oh, this is so overwhelming.

4:52What if we have to live amongst this all over the place?

4:54And eventually we got it all cleaned up.

4:56But how do you get to the point where you bite off small bites and

5:01then you go, okay, I'm conquering the big thing.

5:04For me, the, well, there's that idea of, you've heard like productivity experts say, eat

5:11the frog, like get up and do the hardest thing first.

5:14And for me, that just requires too much willpower to get started.

5:20I need these little tiny dopamine hits that will build momentum along the way.

5:25And I think that's a good thing.

5:25And so I just got back from a pretty much a three week art show.

5:29I was in Round Top, Texas, selling my art, showcasing it for three weeks.

5:34Everything is in the entryway.

5:36I mean, my stuff is everywhere, little tiny like boxes, piles of stuff.

5:42The way I'm going to tackle that is one box at a time.

5:45And each and I just I just remind myself that I'm going to get a

5:49dopamine hit when I get to the bottom of one box, even though they're like

5:5330 boxes in the entryway that have to be unpacked and something has to be

5:57taken to its home and put away.

5:59And so that's my answer to that is just it's OK to do like the

6:05small things first. And it builds that dopamine hit over time that keeps you going.

6:10I'm glad you're saying that because I totally assumed I'm like, we're going to get

6:14on here and she's going to be like, well, you know, I just can't stand

6:17to see a mess. So I have to have it all cleaned up right away.

6:19And I'm like, that is not my personality is because there's so there's so much

6:24going on. And I also think, you know, when you're a working mom and you

6:29come home, I mean, I get home at five.

6:31The kids have already been home for an hour.

6:33They are, you know, I'm constantly after them like, I'm sorry, did you just eat

6:39a bag of chips and then think like mom's going to come and throw this

6:42bag away? Why do I need to throw this bag away when the maid is

6:46going to be home from work in an hour?

6:48You know, do you have that?

6:50I mean, am I the only person that has that?

6:52No, I have three kids.

6:54And I was there's a coffee table behind me.

6:57I was sitting there talking to a friend right before this podcast interview.

7:01And I looked in front of me and there are four coffee cups on the

7:04coffee table. Like all from this morning.

7:07I just went to my bedroom.

7:10This is my own fault.

7:11This isn't my kids. But I, I drink my coffee well, well into noon.

7:17Like I all morning long.

7:19It's a slow, long habit.

7:21I have. I just pick up a coffee cup and took a sip.

7:25And I realized it was yesterday's coffee cup because I had not.

7:29Oh, OK. That makes me feel better.

7:31Yeah, no, it's, it's a constant, it's never done.

7:36Decluttering is never done. This idea of making room for things that matter in our

7:43heads, in our visual, like in our environment, like the things that we see, it's

7:49a constant process. There's like a, in my, the book I wrote, Organize First, Decorate

7:55Second, I talked about editing and how it just never, it just never stops.

7:59I mean, you, you just, you have to have a party to get it to

8:02like maximum edit point. It's like writing a book or a blog post or something.

8:07You, you just have to edit until you have to hit publish.

8:10And then throwing a party or hitting publish, you've edited all you could.

8:14It's the best it possibly can be.

8:16And then it's just going to start building up again over time.

8:19And, and yeah, the conversations with my kids feel incessant.

8:24Like, can you please throw away the cookie wrapper, the, you know, clean up the,

8:31you know, they, my kids are teenagers.

8:33So they're making their own coffee in the mornings.

8:35I'm like, clean up the coffee grounds.

8:37Maybe. I literally, I was just saying, I had this situation.

8:41There's one of, and she'll know when she listens to this.

8:45One of my kids is like the queen of this.

8:47And I walk into the room the other day and I have a room where

8:51I have a bunch of plants and behind the plant, I see a glass and

8:54I'm like, oh, is there a glass?

8:56And we don't leave glasses on tables in our house because we have a cat

8:59and she absolutely loves to bat them off and watch them break.

9:03Oh my gosh, somebody left a glass there, but I don't even know how long

9:07it was there. And I can't tell you what was in it, but the memory

9:11of pouring it down the drain is going to cause PTSD the rest of my

9:15life, you know? And I'm like, I want to make you have to pour this

9:18down the drain. But that is, so that is just, and I feel like that's

9:22a constant effort with kids.

9:24But I also think that as things build up, there is, there is this, you

9:30have to stay on top of it.

9:31And this is where I feel like I didn't do that because I just, you

9:34know, put the toys in the basement and we'll, the floors that we live on,

9:40we'll keep kind of decluttering those as we go.

9:42But then I go down to the basement and I think, okay, there's stuff we

9:45need to let go of.

9:47How do you make that decision?

9:48Because we do, I also have, I have this problem and my kids have this

9:53problem where it's like, I might use that again, but I'm not going to, I'm

9:56not going to let it go.

9:58Right. I think it's helpful to think about the life cycle of a thing and

10:04not, I guess the opposite of that would be the, maybe I'm going to use

10:11this in the future. Have I used it?

10:13Has it served its purpose?

10:15Can I, and I've, I've done this with my kids since they were little, but

10:19can we say thank you to that thing for the service that it's provided us

10:23and then put it in the trash can?

10:25And we practiced this with their art when they were really young.

10:28Cause you know, a kid draws a picture and they like want to hang on

10:30to it for forever. And you're like, no, this is a really good picture.

10:33Now we can take a picture of the drawing with our phone.

10:36So that helps a little bit, but it's almost like having a closing ceremony for

10:41like a little tiny funeral for this thing.

10:44Like we are going to say, thank you.

10:46This thing has served its purpose and then we're going to pass it along, whether

10:49that's the trash can or maybe a goodwill boss.

10:53or something that just how do we move it along in its life?

10:57Because it's not serving us just sitting there collecting dust.

11:00That so there is a contrast out there for everybody, every parent out there and

11:05for grandparents who are looking at our generation and going, why are you keeping this

11:08stuff? There is kind of this movement to be like, keep your kids things and

11:13make your kid feel good about all of their art.

11:15And so when my girls were in elementary school and that's when the heavy art

11:20is coming home, I'm starting to get content on social media because they know everything

11:25about your life, right? So I'm starting to get this content that's like, you can

11:29frame your kid's art or you can send us a picture of their art and

11:31we'll make you a great big framed piece of their art.

11:34And I'm going to tell you, there was a moment where so embarrassing.

11:39There was a moment where I was like, well, that would be adorable.

11:42I should have this. And I'm like, where would I put this?

11:44Why am I even how am I getting sucked in?

11:47I am a marketer's dream.

11:49Literally, I go to the grocery store and the same orange juice that I see

11:53every week is in a different container.

11:54I'm like, that looks good.

11:56I think it's the same, you know?

11:57So I see this and I think, oh, that would be so cute.

12:01How do you stop yourself from adding more chaos?

12:04Because I feel like there is a push to keep cluttering, keep adding chaos to

12:09your house. And I think even in the decluttering space, people are, marketers are trying

12:15to sell us solutions to problems and the problems that we're having is, the problem

12:18is too much stuff. And so we go to Target and we buy bins and

12:23boxes and things and we bring them home because we think that they're going to

12:27make us more organized. Honestly, I think that the best answer to that question is

12:30practice being resourceful. Don't go buy anything.

12:35I mean, I mean, just, just stop, just stop buying.

12:39I mean, I know that is so hard for some people to do.

12:45Sometimes I think it probably takes more willpower to just not buy this stuff than

12:48it does to come home and start to organize it.

12:52But I think that there is, I think our kids are losing resourcefulness as a

12:58trait, as a skill, as a character quality.

13:02By just buying another solution, air quotes, solution to their problem, or even just for

13:07ourselves, I think we're showing them that, that, that buying something is the answer instead

13:13of using our own ingenuity or critical thinking skills to, to create a solution or

13:19invent something like, like there's an ingenuity that comes along when you say, okay, I'm

13:24not going to spend any money on this, but I still am going to solve

13:28this problem. And, and there's probably stuff in your basement that could help make some

13:33of that happen. Yeah. Oh, absolutely.

13:36I mean, and I look at that and I also think the space has been

13:39used for such a long time.

13:41And like I said, my house is 20 years old.

13:43So when I look through, I just see this needs to be freshened up.

13:47And there, there is this overwhelming moment where, okay, I got to take everything out

13:51of here to freshen it.

13:52But you say, that's what you should do to, to design and to redesign your

13:58space or to design your space.

13:59If it's new, you have to move everything out, right?

14:02Explain how you, how you work that through in your mind.

14:05You go get a laundry basket and you, you just take everything out.

14:09Uh, you just literally hide it and not, not hide it, but we don't have

14:17any cabinets in our kitchen.

14:18We have an unfitted kitchen.

14:20I did it because I thought it was going to be fashionable and affordable.

14:23Um, it would be very beneficial if there was a cabinet and I could put

14:26the spices in it and just close it.

14:28We have shelves in sort of a pantry area behind our kitchen where I can

14:31go put those things. But sometimes it's beneficial for me just to go through the

14:36kitchen and just take everything off the kitchen counter.

14:38So just take it all off, go put it in the pantry where it can

14:42be stored on wire shelves, very simply.

14:45And then one by one, we can take those things out as, as we need

14:49them. Um, but yeah, I mean, you just, I, I don't think there's anything wrong

14:53with, I've, I've heard, I've heard it called quieting a room too.

14:57Like just this idea of like taking everything out and just sitting in it.

15:01And then the fun thing about this process is when you start to introduce things

15:04back into it, whether they're old things or new things, they start to feel fresh

15:08and new and you start to be able to appreciate and enjoy them again.

15:11And I love that benefit as well.

18:24There's been this mindset in the last few years that to make your space, to

18:29declutter your space, you have to be a minimalist.

18:31And there's nothing. And I've never, I didn't grow up that way.

18:35My mom had a very traditional house.

18:38And it wasn't like we were cluttered with knickknacks, you know, but there were, you

18:41know, decorations and things. And I feel like the next generation, well, sort of the

18:46generation below me was like, we want nothing.

18:49We want just very straight lines, nothing, no lace.

18:53Like it has to just be very, everything has to look very clean.

18:57And to me, those sterile spaces are not comforting and homey to other people they

19:04are. So is there, is there kind of a balance?

19:07Is there a change, do you see a change back in design at all that

19:10we might be getting back into like those traditional bigger couches and homey feeling?

19:17Absolutely. We are. I mean, I think we see those giant swings culturally, not just

19:24generationally. I think different things happen in our, in our lives and collectively that, you

19:29know, if we grew up in a very traditional home, maybe there is going to

19:32be sort of a pendulum swing to minimalism, but then maybe something happens in someone's

19:38life and they, they lose a loved one or they, they find themselves in need

19:41of a comfort source. And they think, well, let's go put a lace tablecloth on

19:44top of this. Let me pull out my grandmother's china and start to reuse it.

19:48I think that it's important to, I've been through different, different swings in my own

19:54design. And there are things, there are things that I wish I had hung on

19:59to. Interestingly enough, I had this painting from my grandmother that was a duck painting.

20:04And I was like, I just don't think we need duck paintings anymore.

20:07This was back in the 2010s.

20:10And now they're duck paintings.

20:12Everybody wants a duck. But if I found a Goodwill painting, a duck painting at

20:15the Goodwill, I'd be like, oh my gosh.

20:17Anyway, I gave it to my cousin.

20:18It's great. It's still in the family.

20:20But I think that sometimes it's okay to put things in an attic that might

20:25have sentimental value in the future.

20:28It's hard to be selective about what those things are.

20:31So, you know, try not to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

20:34But I don't, I think the pendulum, I think that too far one direction, too

20:39far the other direction, we have to learn how to like live in the tension,

20:42in the middle, in the messy middle.

20:44And I think that as humans, we're so driven by narrative that we're racing towards

20:50resolution. And sometimes I think learning to live a balanced life means living in a

20:59little bit of clutter, but then also taking the time and effort to just stand

21:04up and go get rid of some stuff at the same time.

21:06I think what you're saying to me, it reminds me of a book I read.

21:09I think the book was called Bittersweet.

21:11And it was a book that I read at a really critical time where my

21:16kids were babies. Everything was very chaotic.

21:19And the author, Shana Nyquist.

21:22Yes, yes. She also had little kids at the time and was making the point

21:27like, if you're not inviting people to your house, regardless of the mess, and there

21:32and there's not a fellowship around you, then really, you're missing out.

21:38And I think so often, we live in a society where we're racing toward the

21:43goal. But we don't actually know what the goal is.

21:46It's like we've got if I could just get here.

21:48If I could get just get here.

21:49But really, the journey is that's the whole part of that's life.

21:54You know, the journey of getting to whatever the next goal is, has to be

21:58enjoyed has to be savored.

22:00And when I hear what you're saying, this idea of like, keeping the things around

22:06that have meaning and knowing what's important, but also living it living in this space

22:13and not letting the space get to the point where you are shutting other people

22:17out or shutting life out.

22:19Because, you know, we sometimes, our house is chaotic.

22:23I have four kids. We have a million kids.

22:25In the summertime, our house is just filled with other people's kids.

22:29It's totally full. And sometimes I look around and I think, oh my gosh, I

22:33can't believe other people's kids are here in our house.

22:35It's like insane. And then I remember her words of like, this is, these are

22:41the times, live in it, fellowship, enjoy those spaces together, regardless of whether somebody left

22:47a wrapper out and there's, you know, books piled up on the desk and everything

22:51else. A hundred percent. I've actually been to Shauna's house and experienced some of her

22:58hospitality. And I love that.

23:03I love what you described about all these kids at your house in the summer.

23:07I love the idea of throwing the doors open.

23:10Um, I also have been known to tell neighbor kids to kindly pick up after

23:15themselves. So I don't think there's anything wrong with, um, maintain, you know, asking the

23:21people who come to your house, especially kids to participate in maintaining certain standards, even

23:26if they are loose. I think that's important for kids too.

23:30But yes, I am all about nothing.

23:34I always say, if a guest spills a glass of wine, I will toss them

23:38a dish towel. And I just say, nothing can be more precious than you are.

23:43Buy your furniture on Facebook marketplace so that the wine spills don't matter, you know,

23:48and, and let people know that they do.

23:51It's interesting because at this time, I do think in this season of spring, we

23:56feel this tremendous pressure. We're kind of like, especially in Michigan, we're climbing out of

24:01the snow. We're coming out of the winter days.

24:04And it's like those long, those long dark times, you know, days are very short

24:09in the winter and you have, you don't see the sun very often.

24:13And then suddenly you get a few peaks of the sun and you go, oh,

24:17it's getting warm. It's that time.

24:20It's everything starting to sprout again.

24:22It's that time to make a change.

24:24The world is changing. Life is starting again, and we should make that change in

24:30our house. And I think sometimes that can put you into a little bit of

24:34a funk also, because you can get overwhelmed by that.

24:37And I see that in my girls, especially where they have like these big feelings

24:41of, I'm going to clean out the closet.

24:43And in the spring, the church is always like, we have a big clothing drive,

24:49bring all your clothes. And then they get overwhelmed because they have play practice and

24:55basketball and soccer and blah, blah, blah, and everything builds up.

24:57And then they end up feeling a little disappointed.

25:00So when you talk to families and you're talking about those small bites, how do

25:05you break that up amongst kids and parents?

25:09I think that it's important for my kids to practice critical thinking skills.

25:13And in order for them to do that, I think they need safe places to

25:16make their own decisions. So I, you've, I don't think I invented this and you

25:21might've done this, but sometimes I'll say like, we're going to do a 10 minute

25:25tidy. Like I'm going to set a timer for 10 minutes and I look at

25:30each kid and I say, what are you going to go tidy?

25:32You know, pick an area.

25:34What are you going to go do?

25:36It always kind of like fizzles out at the very end.

25:39They, they get very distracted very easily.

25:42Um, but I think the exercise of setting an intention, deciding what you're going to

25:50go do, and then going and doing your best effort is important.

25:54Sometimes last spring break, I actually got into my daughter's room and I was like,

25:59we have got to, it was bad.

26:03It was really bad. And it builds up over time.

26:06I, I don't think there's any way to keep it.

26:10You know, if you do a deep declutter, I don't think there's any way to

26:13keep it deep decluttered. It's just going to build up.

26:16So we have to teach our kids that practice of clearing, clearing the space visually

26:24and mentally. That's so that is, that isn't the biggest challenge with, especially my one

26:31child that tends to just love to explore and be artistic and do whatever, but

26:40then struggles to get everything back on track.

26:43But when I look at your Instagram page, for example, when I look at your

26:46house, um, it seems like there's still a lot of creativity.

26:50There's a lot of ability to have fun and play and craft and all of

26:54those things. To me, that there's a very, um, important balance between that.

26:59Like I said, here we are on the journey.

27:01The journey is experience and the journey is, is kind of that freedom of being

27:05able to figure out who you are.

27:06And a lot of times I do feel like that's through art.

27:09My girls are oftentimes they sing.

27:12I don't sing. They are great at singing.

27:14They sing together and they'll.

27:16sit in the family room and they'll all harmonize and sing together, but they love

27:19to also paint. So we get the big tablecloth out and we pull everything out

27:24and we paint. How do you make sure there is that balance of, I think

27:30sometimes you can be so rigid about things have to be perfect all the time

27:34that you can't learn to get there.

27:36And then that can sometimes have the opposite effect with family members.

27:40Yeah, it really can. I grew up with perfectionist parents and I have a sister

27:46and I think that the, our response to that perfectionism was different.

27:52Mine was to go very creative.

27:56I have, I'm very okay leaving the craft project out on the table.

28:03The rest of my family is not.

28:05My sister took the opposite direction that I did and everything is very wrapped up

28:12with the tidy little bow.

28:13The project is finished. We're calling it done.

28:16We're moving on. And I, for me, the answer to that comes back into that.

28:22Just, are we living in the moment?

28:26Are we speeding towards like perfection, which is not achievable on this side of heaven?

28:31Or are we saying, you know what?

28:33It's okay that there's a mess on the dining room table for a day.

28:38Um, and then also recognizing within myself that probably my tendency might be to leave

28:43that mess there a little bit longer than some other people might be okay with.

28:48And, and reaching into my will and practicing discipline and saying, we're going to pick

28:54it up. Even though it feels like the project isn't done.

28:57Even though it feels like the painting is still in progress.

28:59It is okay. I have a pile of paintings in progress.

29:04I mean, that is just, that is just something that I have had to realize

29:08as an artist is that sometimes you can't finish a painting in one sitting, you

29:12know, when it's done, but it's hard to know when that moment is until, until

29:16it is. And then you're like, it's done.

29:18And so there's a lot of rotation through that.

29:21And, um, I do appreciate the, the challenge that comes with like, how, how do

29:27I organize this creative process?

29:29I love a system. I love to, I have a very analytical creative mind.

29:35I think that comes from having an engineering father where I love using resourcefulness to

29:40create solutions for the messes around me.

29:43That's another. So I also will look at that as sort of a creative outlet

33:01On the way to school today, I had this conversation with my one daughter.

33:05I was like, you are very good at procrastinating and finding a million other things

33:11to do. And I know that feeling.

33:14It's not unique to her.

33:16I can understand that. And I said, honestly, sometimes that's fine.

33:20And sometimes you know it's not fine.

33:23And that's something that you have to work through on your own.

33:26You really have to push yourself.

33:28And honestly, that's something that you can call on God with prayer.

33:33And I told her, I've done that too.

33:36When I'm like, I have all these deadlines to hit.

33:38And I know my tendency is to, you know, push back or go over and

33:44get distracted here and start making some dessert we don't need.

33:49And then I'm off track.

33:50And I know I'm never going to get to the next thing.

33:52You know, I'm like, that focus, God can get you there.

33:57You need, but you need to know that you need to ask for it.

34:00And I think that's some of the issues that we have when we get so

34:04busy and we are caught up in the journey that you have to know when

34:07you have to step back and say, I personally need to go, okay, God, how

34:13do I get to this next level?

34:15How do I, how do I get all, how do I achieve all of this?

34:18How do I get it all done in my own power if I'm not leaning

34:22on you? Yeah, a hundred percent.

34:25I, there's two things that I do for myself when I find myself kind of,

34:30I feel like when I start procrastinating, I start spiraling mentally.

34:34Like I just start thinking through overthinking stuff.

34:38So one thing I do is I focus on finishing things.

34:44I mean, just this idea and I'm back, that's back to me finding those little

34:47dopamine hits. Like if I focus on finish, if I focus on finishing things, momentum

34:52will take care of itself and I'm off to the races.

34:55Another thing that I do is take captive every thought, focus only on true, good,

35:02lovely things and beach and, and, and repeat that practice in order to be transformed

35:08by the renewing of my mind.

35:10That goes back to three scriptures.

35:13And so I'll just, I, I do that to kind of like take hold of

35:18the mental spiral that I'm devolving into.

35:21And then the other thing that I believe in, and I'm, I'm seeing one of

35:24my children struggle with this is, and I, I tried to avoid it for a

35:29long time is some people really do struggle with ADHD or even depression or mild

35:40depression. And so I think seeking medical clinical help and diagnosis should not, I think

35:48that we need to do away with a stigma around mental health.

35:52And just also like the judgment and the criticism that sometimes I think we put

35:57on each other when we're like, oh, look at her house or her yard, you

36:00know, what battle is she fighting that we know nothing about?

36:04Right. It's easy to compare yourself.

36:07Right. You know, but, but can we have grace for that other person?

36:12And if we, if we don't have grace for other people, it's really going to

36:16be hard for us to have grace for ourselves.

36:18Um, but I don't want to, I don't want to get to the other side

36:23of a conversation about decluttering without saying that sometimes even my therapist will say, well,

36:31power is not enough. Sometimes you need medication to help, to help get you there.

36:36Um, and so I would encourage people to not discount that avenue, uh, avenue of,

36:41as a resource as well.

36:44That's, I agree. I've, I've seen, I've seen that get take hold in people's minds

36:49too. And I do think that there is that constant need to move to the

36:52next project and then you don't get that first one done.

36:55And there's that inability to focus.

36:58So I, you also wrote a book though.

37:00So I want to get to that before we go, you wrote a book.

37:02Tell us about the book.

37:04The book was, was called Organize First, Decorate Second.

37:07And I wrote it because my editor said they were always looking for an organizing

37:12book and I wanted to write a book about home.

37:15So I wanted to take, uh, just the needs of a publisher and, and then

37:21my personal practices, which are a little bit divergent and, and really, I just wanted,

37:30I wanted to write a book that talked about how do I, as a creative

37:35person, live with three kids and, and practice grace in a, in a regular home

37:42on an everyday basis. And so I tried to weave narrative and tried to tell

37:46stories and, um, just talk about different experiences that we've had as a family and,

37:51um, share how there's tips and tricks and all that stuff.

37:54But I, sometimes I'm like organizing tips or just, I mean, they're all the same

37:58at the end of the day.

37:59I think what's, what makes my book different is, is the stories that I've woven

38:04into that. I love that.

38:06And I, and it's been great talking to you.

38:08I totally relate to everything you're saying.
