0:48From executive producers of Ted Lasso and Shrinking.
0:50We were all a part of this victory.
0:52Now get those nachos out of the preemie warmer.
0:56Nachos! Feels like there's more applause for the nachos than my speech.

1:07You're listening to the Buck Sexton Show podcast.
1:10Make sure you subscribe to the podcast on the iHeartRadio app or wherever you get
1:14your podcasts. It was a heck of a State of the Union address.
1:18And is Marco Rubio getting ready to be president of Cuba?
1:22We've got some things to talk about here.
1:24Joel Berry is in the mix.
1:26He is managing editor of The Babylon Bee, which many of you love for its
1:30humorous takes on so many things.
1:34Great to have you on, man.
1:35First time. Appreciate you being here.
1:37Yeah, thanks for having me, Buck.
1:38It's an honor. What was your sense of the State of the Union address aftermath?
1:44Because what I took from it was they were talking.
1:48The next morning, CNN was talking about the Epstein files.
1:53Which, after a State of the Union address is kind of a weird thing, unless
1:58they felt like they didn't really have much of a place to take a swing
2:02at it. What was your big takeaway?
2:05Yeah, well, that's a great indication that the State of the Union went really well,
2:09isn't it? That CNN immediately wants to change the subject.
2:12I mean, Trump, the thing that is so funny about it to me is that
2:15Trump, he played the same trick on the Democrats that he played last year.
2:19At last year's State of the Union, where he would say something completely non -controversial,
2:24that 95 % of Americans, of sane human beings, would and should agree with.
2:31Like, the American president should prioritize American citizens above illegal aliens.
2:37Or, you know, calling for justice for the murder of a Ukrainian immigrant.
2:45And just the optics of watching these Democrats just with just dour faces, arms crossed,
2:54sitting in their seats through it all, was just awful for the Democrats.
3:00You know, except for John Fetterman.
3:02God bless John Fetterman. You know, he seems like an honest guy.
3:06He didn't take Trump's bait.
3:08But the rest of the Democrats did.
3:11And it was fun to watch.
3:12And it was an amazing speech, too.
3:13So, I love this, by the way, from the Babylon Bee.
3:17This was about Hillary Clinton, who today, as you and I are talking, was being
3:23grilled on Capitol Hill. And it says, politician on Epstein list, grilled by other politicians
3:27on Epstein list. See, I appreciate you guys are making a joke around this now
3:32because, you know, people have gotten so tangled up in this mess with the whole
3:37Epstein situation. It's so many things, right?
3:40There's obviously the criminality and the horribleness and the terrible things about girls.
3:47And, you know, no one's making any light of that or anything else.
3:50But you have these politicians now that are playing this, like, food fight game of,
3:57well, your side, you know, your side has people who are mentioned.
3:59Our side has people who are mentioned.
4:01Well, being mentioned doesn't necessarily mean much of anything.
4:04And it just feels like it's all so dishonest at this point, the way that
4:07people are just trying to use it as, like, mud to see if they can
4:12get it to stick to somebody else, whether the person had anyone thinks they did
4:17anything actually bad in the Epstein orbit or not.
4:22Yeah, well, it's gross to see how it's kind of become a political football.
4:26The Democrats didn't care about it when Biden was in office.
4:29Suddenly they kind of took up this cause as if they're really, as if they
4:33really care for the victims and they really want justice for the victims.
4:38The files release was such a mess because there are so many names mentioned in
4:43it and people who never went to Epstein Island, people who never interacted with Epstein,
4:48if your names are in the files, you know, that can just be posted online
4:52and it can create a whole thing.
4:54And so it's just a mess.
4:56You know, what's frustrating, I think, for the average American is that, you know, we
5:00see politicians using it so that they can get their, you know, their little sound
5:05bites and clips and hearings or so that they can tweet about it or they
5:08can use it against their political enemy.
5:10We don't see anybody pursuing justice, you know, and that's that's what Americans want.
5:15That's what Americans have been waiting for.
5:16We want to know that, you know, powerful people can still be held into account
5:22for horrific deeds done to the power.
5:24in this country and um you know it's it's disheartening to see that not you
5:29know we did see it in the uk prince andrew was arrested so that that
5:32was nice to see i guess um we're waiting for we'd like to see at
5:36least one arrest here in the united states just can i point out that prince
5:39andrew was arrested for something having nothing to do with actual like epstein sexual activity
5:45right i mean this is it's it's like getting capone on taxes it was like
5:48it was like the uh yeah it was like the oj simpson thing you know
5:52where they you know he got off on murder but they kind of they got
5:54him for some other stuff you know later on well they got him later for
5:57stealing memorabilia it was some crazy story they got him on armed robbery for a
6:03long time for that you know he got like 10 years i think but they
6:06got him on stealing memorabilia or something yeah but but this is what i mean
6:10like they got you know they've arrested andrew but it's for it's for sharing trade
6:15secrets it is not anyway so so yeah that that's that's the arrest that they've
6:20made so far around all this stuff so i i understand the frustration of people
6:25who to your point want want to know there's still accountability because if we live
6:31in a world where politicians can actually violate underage girls and systematically and over many
6:37years do this and there is no punishment for that it's like malik has already
6:40won and we're in a really really bad place but so i understand people want
6:45to know that but these politicians now and particularly like democrats whenever whenever trump has
6:50a good day i'll turn on the i'll turn on uh like ms now formerly
6:54msnbc and there'll be some story about like oh do you know that on page
6:583705 like there's a reference to trump in the epstein files okay but what does
7:04that mean like did he do anything no okay but they you know it's just
7:08used i mean you said it's political football yeah it's just used as a weapon
7:11now it has no one's actually pursuing justice anymore it seems on capitol hill well
7:17you know for i guess you know for anyone who pays attention to the media
7:21pays attention to politics i would recommend this for the next three years you know
7:25anytime uh you hear the media bringing up the epstein files to go after trump
7:31try to figure out what they're covering up because there's probably some good news uh
7:36you know on on the trump front something he's accomplished um that they're that they're
7:41trying to gloss over i mean the the thing about this is you know that
7:44we've you know the second trump term is there's been so much good news he's
7:48accomplished so much that just nobody's hearing about uh because because the media doesn't want
7:53to cover it you really kind of have to dig and find for yourself it's
7:55but but it's been an incredibly eventful first year for the president with all the
8:00things he's accomplished yeah i think it's been uh amazing and you look at all
8:04of the uh actual verifiable uh or you know information which was data -based wins
8:12and you're talking about the border being secure and you look at all these different
8:16economic metrics you can point to uh and and even the like 600 billion dollars
8:21that tariffs brought in which everyone said this is going to be catastrophic for the
8:24economy it turns out it wasn't so that's interesting um i think trump had had
8:28an incredible first year i want to come back and ask you about just let's
8:31talk theories on um this cuba situation which is really interesting to me but also
8:37man kind of kind of way out in the open i mean or rather way
8:40out into into the who knows what's going on we'll get there in a second
8:43sponsor of the podcast today birch gold group international disputes inflation rising debt there's a

9:19gold group um all right joel uh let's let's look at this thing so so
9:23there was a boat uh that was off the coast of cuba here you go
9:29cuba says oh this is what this is what i had actually this is the
9:33latest on this one by the way we've got an update from like just last
9:35few hours because i had theorized that they're gonna say that it's some kind of
9:41like mini bay of pigs thing and the question then becomes is it or are
9:48they like why would they say it if it wasn't this is the latest on
9:51bbc cuba says group shot on u .s registered speedboat planned an armed infiltration so
9:57cuba has said 10 people aboard a u .s registered speedboat that had intercepted off
10:01the coast of cuba was planning an infiltration with terrorist aims border guard shot dead
10:07four people injured another six according the interior ministry of this is all from cuba
10:12to be clear so i mean i'm not taking this as gospel at all but
10:16the people were shot i mean you know rubio and the u .s government and
10:19that that's agreed on uh increased tensions between the the the two countries i mean
10:24this is right off of if you look i'm looking on a map where this
10:27happened is basically the closest point between south florida where actually i am here and
10:32cuba is where this happens if you're on a speedboat you're like i'm trying to
10:35get to cuba as fast as possible this is exactly where you would land what
10:39do you think happened here man what what's your take on it you know all
10:42theories welcome yeah well you know i i uh i i'm not inclined to uh
10:49to uh you know believe the story of the the cuba communist government but i
10:53i mean it is kind of if it is true um these guys sound to
10:59me like uh you know anti -communist uh freedom fighters uh which makes them american
11:05heroes uh which means that uh maybe we should uh you know maybe we need
11:10to go to war with cuba and and uh you know topple that regime down
11:14there it's i think maybe it's time to do that it's funny with clay my
11:17co -host on radio he said he's like what what are we why are we
11:20feeling like we need to dance around the fact that it would be better for
11:24everyone if the cuban government fell and cuban and the cuban people were free to
11:30pick their own leadership and have a real government and you know why can't we
11:34just now i know that like marco rubio secretary of state will say stuff like
11:38this but there's still this hesitancy and i think it comes from the american left
11:42actually wanting to like they have a look they have a weird sympathy it's not
11:48weird because they're commies too they have a sympathy for cuba yeah like they they
11:52want to they want us to act like cuba is just a nation like any
11:55other and should be treated meaning the government should be treated as such and it's
11:59been like a prison island for 60 something years now yeah if we if we
12:06were to you know pull a maduro uh so to speak on the the leader
12:09of cuba and and take that that uh country over you know make it the
12:1451st state you would have the the the deepest reddest uh anti -communist uh rock
12:20-ribbed conservative based right -wing state uh in american history you should have a bunch
12:26of cubans uh you know we we know how they are when they come over
12:30here when they escape the country and when they come over here those are the
12:33those the most uh politically active america loving uh conservatives that you'll see um so
12:40you know i'm i'm all for it why not cuba i mean it would it
12:42would the war would be over in like uh like 30 minutes yeah there we
12:47go there we go all right man well one thing i want to ask before
12:50we let you go um what's like the process for coming up with funny things
12:55for the b i mean i know you must read the news and prep it's
12:57like you guys are running a news organization that makes that has a lot of
13:01jokes and there's a lot of funny stuff but is there anything else that you
13:05know i being funny on command i find one of the hardest like i do
13:10radio and we'll make jokes but it's not like be funny you know it's like
13:14if there's a moment to make a joke we'll throw it out there and we'll
13:17have some fun with it what's your process in that yeah well it is it
13:22is it is work you know it's not all fun and games we do laugh
13:24a lot in our writers room we have a shared slack where me and a
13:28bunch of other writers will we kind of iterate and we riff on the news
13:31um it's really all about kind of shots on goal you know uh the more
13:36pitches that you have the more likely you are to to find something that's really
13:40funny and you can kind of riff and you can engineer and and fine -tune
13:44that headline to be just perfect um but uh you know one thing that you
13:48realize as a comedy writer the more you do this is that ideas are cheap
13:51they're a dime a dozen you just gotta you gotta have as many ideas as
13:55you possibly can and solicit as many ideas as you possibly can um it's just
14:00it's just shots on goal and so that's that's what we do i wait through
14:03hundreds and hundreds of pitches for my writers and we kind of uh we narrow
14:07down from there and it really is a fun way to look at the news
14:10i mean you know the news is often dark and depressing and sad and frustrating
14:14um and when you're always having this mindset of like what's funny about this it's
14:19it's really just a it's a fun way to live a fun way to look
14:22at the news and and we're we're glad that we can kind of share that
14:24a little bit through our headlines with other people kind of giving them a relief
14:28from from the just the daily craziness joel i appreciate your work man i think
14:33i think the babylon b does great stuff so i'm a fan so for what
