0:00This is an iHeart Podcast, Guaranteed Human.
0:09Welcome to Wellness Unmasked. I'm Dr.
0:12Nicole Sapphire. This is your weekly rundown.
0:14Well, it's very timely what we're going to start out with this week because there
0:19have been a couple of significant developments happening all at once, and they're getting a
0:24lot of attention. So first, we talked about peptides earlier this week, right?
0:29Well, as if he listened to our podcast himself, as though Wellness Unmasked was something
0:37that Secretary Kennedy, RFK Jr., listened to, RFK Jr.
0:42is now signaling a push for the FDA to reevaluate peptides.
0:47Now, peptides, as we mentioned this week, have been a gray zone topic for a
0:52while. They're used in wellness, anti -aging, and even performance setting like athletes, but not
0:58always clearly regulated or consistently studied at the level we would hope for for widespread
1:04medical use. Now, if the FDA does move forward, as Secretary Kennedy is signaling they
1:11might, they would reevaluate some of these peptides.
1:16This could mean tighter oversight, more structured clinical data requirements, and potentially clear guidance for
1:23both doctors like myself and the patients.
1:26That's not a bad thing.
1:28Let me tell you, it's really not.
1:30Do I love the idea of regulation?
1:33No. But when it comes to medical things, regulation is there to protect us, right?
1:39It really is. It could maybe limit access in the short term, especially for people
1:45who are currently using these compounds through, you know, compounding pharmacies, wellness clinics, or whatever.
1:52But at the same time, it could also give us that robust data that we
1:58need to show that they work.
2:00And therefore, physicians have a little bit more, you know, insight on how to use
2:05them, how to use them correctly, how to minimize risk.
2:08And who knows, maybe your assurance will even cover them.
2:12So I see this as a good thing.
2:14I'm glad that they're looking into them a little bit more because you can talk
2:18about them all you want.
2:20But unless you have data showing a benefit or a lack of benefit, you know,
2:23it's really hard for me to get behind something.
2:25But also another big headline came out this week, a report suggesting that the White
2:30House may have a preferred candidate in mind for the next CDC director.
2:36Now, I don't think I need to remind you, but the Centers for Disease Control
2:40and Prevention, you know, the CDC, has been without an actual director since last summer.
2:47And I don't want to get into all the details and the drama of everything
2:50that has gone on. But to say that the CDC has been a mess this
2:54last year is an understatement.
2:57So the report came out.
3:00Now, mind you, this is not an official announcement from the HHS or the White
3:05House, but it is a report, whether it was an intentionally leaked report or not.
3:11I don't really know. But the reality is it sounds like there's conversation regarding the
3:17CDC director. The CDC director shapes national public health messaging, policy priorities, and how aggressively
3:24respond to emerging health issues.
3:27Let's remember, we're still seeing higher cases of measles outbreak throughout our country than we
3:34have seen in any of the recent years.
3:36And we're actually at risk of losing our eradication status.
3:39It's pretty sad, pretty embarrassing from a public health perspective.
3:44So we really do need some strong leadership at the CDC.
3:48So good news is the person who they're saying is a quote unquote favorite, she
3:55has decades long experience in public health, someone who is well respected.
4:02I think she actually would do a very good job.
4:05Not only does she have a medical degree, but I believe she also went to
4:09law school as well. So when you are tasked to run a very large organization
4:14and command the respect of people, she is the person.
4:18She is not some rogue person that has been cherry picked by anyone.
4:22One, she's someone who has earned her way to being considered for this role.
4:28And I'm not even going to name names just because that this was an incorrect
4:33reporting. But if the person being reported this week actually becomes a CDC director, I
4:41think that it is a great pick.
4:43And I'm glad to see the conversation being had for people who potentially bring together
4:48some of the extremism that is happening.
4:52The CDC has lost a lot of respect, not only during COVID, but since COVID.
4:56And we have a lot of vaccine skepticism.
5:00We're in the midst of a measles outbreak crisis.
5:03So I would love to see someone who is not political, someone who not only
5:10has the respect of the administration, but also has the respect of the medical public
5:15to try and bridge some of these gaps.
5:17And it looks like we may be moving that way.
5:20I'll keep you informed as always.
5:22This is Dr. Nicole Sapphire.
